  • Kirsten Hall has a provocative question: is it time to stop celebrating women in business, just for being women in business? Maybe, she suggests, we can wind down the idea of corporate women’s groups - and position women in business as the new normal.
TED@StateStreet was a TED-curated event celebrating speakers from across the State Street community. Produced in partnership with State Street, the event showcased the power of collaboration in the never-ending challenge to build a better world.
About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. As a skilled worker I was sent to foreign lands. Some like me saw the locals as "inferior" and must follow orders. I did not. As problems arose I was always able to find some who would easily assume responsibility and problems were soon resolved by working as a team

This is a fantastic video, that being said whilst I agree that getting into massive financial positions JUST because being a women isn't a really cause for celebration; you have to understand that this is somewhat relatively a new achievement in society. Women have been gatekept from industries and continue to face inequality in the workforce so women should be proud to be able to get a massive position.

While I appreciate her viewpoint I just think that celebrating the rise of women in institutions such as businesses has not reached a point where it can afford to be normalised as she suggest. In the bigger picture the real problem still remains that the woman who are facing discrimination, violations because of their gender sometimes do need to draw on inspiration from already successful woman. The problem of gender discrimination is very much real and many times woman loose sight of their capabilities because of their difficulties which is very normal and in those times knowing that there are other woman who have achieved greater heights despite their gender and despite their ethnic origins is a huge inspiration. The celebration of success of women is very powerful for women who are in difficult situations around the globe and that is the very point of talking about it.

It was good until the end when she said she wasn't about the Women groups/orgs, (that's still needed). Just because she's reached success, doesn't mean other women don't need that community...

If payment is measured by the ton, the gap is huge. If the women who compete in the international games lose consistently to boys under 15 years old, is there a message here?

Interesting talk but I don't buy it for a second. Not recognizing your womanhood or ethnic background in the workplace or whatever it might be negates the experiences that brought us to where we are today and doesn't provide any encouragement, which men have had since the beginning of time. Business as usual leaves people out and we then all miss out on the problem solving and innovation that comes from intentionally seeking out women/ minorities and their perspectives and inclusion at the table.

Men receive enouragement for free? Tell that to the 80 percent of homeless (yes the majority of homeless are men). Men only receice enouragement when they are already successful, which means we first need to provide something before we are recognized. If you fail, you are on your own, that's what reality, that's what the world of men look like and you wanted to be part of this by demanding equality and this is what you shall get. Don't try to delude anyone into believing we men get encouragment to strive for our careers.
Our choice of career never was a voluntary decision, we just never had another option. What are we supposed to do if we fail? Become housemen? Let our parents provide for us? None of these are viable and socially acceptable options for men If they don't succeed in business they are in peril of becoming homeless. Men and women will never be equal unless women face the same hardships as men. Diamonds are only produced under pressure after all, pressure women are not exposed to

@@pandaman1331 pls be specific .. there is no mercy in generalisation. so 'majority (%?) of homeless (where?) are men? For instance in Australia majority (60%) of the homeless are women.
