- Flo & Eddie and the Turtles performing live on the TV show Hitmakers in March 1992. Also included is a short set from the Grass Roots and then more Turtles to close out the show. The BetaGems channel also has "Grass Roots 5-29-89 primetime TV performance," "Grass Roots 5-31-69 late night TV performance," "Davy Jones, Grass Roots, New Colony 6 live 1979, Six Flags Magic Mountain," "Grass Roots 2-6-88 late night TV performance," "Flo & Eddie of the Turtles with George Carlin June 1987 TV show," "The Turtles 3-19-67 Flo & Eddie TV performance," "The Turtles 2-12-67 Flo & Eddie TV performance," "The Turtles Flo & Eddie 2-5-88 late night TV performance," "60s Reunion: 1993 Turtles, Martha Reeves, Julie Newmar, more," and "Flo & Eddie March 1988 San Diego TV news pre-concert interview."
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, old TV news segments, made-for-TV movies and documentaries, religious programming, variety shows, talk show interviews, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on RUclips or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.
Both bands BELONG in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Get ‘em in there!!!
Most definitely.
classic, great music! name me 5-6 present day hits we’ll be enjoying like THIS 50 years from now!!
And The Association too!!
Yes, the beat years for Rock and roll were 1965 through 1975 so the majority of bands in the HOF should come from that period if deserving so bands like the Turtles, the Grass Roots, the Guess Who, Jethro Tull, and Three Dog Night should all be inducted but not sure any of them are. Nothing against Blondie but over these bands, no.
Darn right
Never ever take yourself seriously probably one of the funniest bands ever
I didn't know Flo and Eddie was an offshoot act from The Turtles until today! That's like a a good stock split!
To have this much fun is the ultimate goal in life. These guys are legends and true heroes!
Loved these groups still do 60 years later.
Still good in 2024
That great drummer just recently passed away....
Johnny Barbata. Also played with CSNY and Jefferson Airplane
Put them in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. Come on folks do it now they deserve it.
VH1 when it was worthwhile to watch...
Absolutely Hall of Fame
Elenore is a Masterpiece 👈
I’m 54… What the hell man?! How come I’m just discovering these two geniuses…
Flo & Eddie are just awesome!!!
Hopefully you've heard of The Turtles, one of the hottest pop bands in the 1960s. They were the lead singers before they changed their act to the 'Flo & Eddy' comedy team.
If you can get to see them live, absolutely do so. They are hilarious and talented to this day!
@@serendipityshopnyc Where you been? Flo (Mark Volman) has advancing dementia and has been wandering around the stage very confused for several years now on the Turtles 'Happy Together' Tour. Eddie (Howard Kaylan) had heart surgery and retired from performing in 2017.
@@vcoaster Damn. I am very grieved to hear it. Last I saw of them was in a documentary some years back where they were working with students who participated in the Happy Together tour. I see Volman has Lewy body dementia, not the same thing as Alzheimer's which is the reflex thought on hearing "dementia", but it still must be super hard to perform, especially after losing his long-time partner. I accept the correction.
@@serendipityshopnyc Thank you for updating me regarding Volman's condition. he definitely seemed quite confused onstage.
Great music from my younger years. I dug The Turtles & Grass Roots.
I love love the grass roots I’m 62 and have always loved them
64 and agree. Wish they had a dvd about their career.
I’ve said it for years, the Turtles belong on the Rock HOF! Certainly Kaylan (One of the best voices in Rock!) and Volman (he introduced humor to rock music) belong for decades of work including with Zappa, T-Rex and others as Flo and Eddie!
Gotta love these guys and their energy! ❤
Damn I'm getting old seeing these bands, and 52 years since Viet Nam for me...
Welcome home! And thank you for your service.
Brave man!
I remember seeing Flo and Eddie singing with Stephen Stills at the Forum in LA. They covered the CSN tunes beautifully.
Howard has that amazing voice.
He sure does!
Two truly great bands and , man, they can still sing great!
Well, they could in '92, anyway. We lost Rob several years ago, although (last I knew) there was still a band called The Grass Roots with no original members. As for Flo & Eddie, Howard has retired due to back problems and Mark's voice is in tatters. All of these guys were still great throughout the '90s and well into the early years of the 21st century. I guess I'm getting a little too old for concerts, anyway, but I've had the records since the mid-'60s in every format that has come along, so I can still enjoy all of these guys.
I was with my husband for 24 years and this is our song
I am glad they survived the legality process that so many bands from the 60s and 70s were not able to handle and ended up in tragedies.
Perfect example, Badfinger.
OUTTASITE ALRIGHT !!
Don’t ya just love these old songs👍🙌🏼
Oh yes🤩nothing better than these golden oldies 👏👏👏👏👏
How could you not? Anyone who claims to dislike this irresistibly infectious pop is a stone cold liar, IMO.
One of the BEST Pop Songs, EVER!!!! Love it!
Absolutely 😁
Going to see the Turtles in Hiawasee, GA June 2022. Happy Together Tour.
Wow, had no idea they were touring!
They’re going to be at The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ on June 24, 2022 along with The Association, Chuck Negron, The Cowsills, The Ventures and Gary Puckett. I already got my tickets and can’t wait to see all of these truly legendary musical artists.
@@kensellers4082just saw them 🎉😊2024
Wow what memories. I saw them performing on the "Reeling In The Years" tour about 1993 at Deer Creek Music Center - Indianapolis, featuring Mark Lindsay of the Paul Revere/Raiders, Tommy James/Shondells, The Grass Roots, and Flo & Eddie of the Turtles. Greatest show I ever witnessed in my life. Flo & Eddie were the final act but when they hit the stage, they came out in drag doing a extreme hard rock number which had me going and then the costumes came off and they became The Turtles. Brilliant move. The tours were always 2-hour with four bands performing 1/2 hour sets. Another song Flo & Eddie did that night was "Spill The Wine (dig that girl)" which I think was a Eric Burdon/War cover which was outta this world.
This is a gem.
Flo n Eddie did many of the vocal harmonies for T Rex
These 2 bands were meteorites they flashed in the sky for a few years.
For those of you who are campaigning for the Rock Hall of Fame, and are disappointed bc your favorite band isn't in it, and, oh, the injustice of it all, consider this ...
Look at all the bands who are not in it ...
Looks like our beloved Turtles are in great company by Not being in the RHoF, so don't be sad.
Those of us who know the genius of The Turtles, and love them, know that they're The Best!!!
Can't You Hear the Cows? Chicken Little Was Right!
Turtles Forever!
🌟🎆👍💕🌈🍭🦄🌻😊
@echoecho3108 "You Don't Have to Walk in The Rain" anymore because The Turtles music will always be there! "Turtle Soup" has got to be their best underrated album. "The Turtles Present The Battle of The Bands" is a classic. Well those brownies are just about ready now... why don't we have one hmmmm?....I mean really..
"Getting to know segment" who the heck doesn't know the Turtles ! 💞 We love all their songs we need these songs today , this interviewer is arrogant never heard of him !
The Grass Roots were great also. Rob Grill only 67 when he passed!
A pity. Looks like he enjoyed his time on earth though. He performed with the Grass Roots (and a bit solo) for over forty years.
The Grass Roots kicked ass here.
Love these guys.
I saw these two groups in 1988, it was great fun.
Who decides who gets to be in the R and R Hall of Fame? Both groups should be in the R and R Hall of Fame. Reminds me of the time that Chubby Checker wanted to be in the R and R Hall of Fame. What does it take to be considered for such an Honor? The voters of these people-are they with it when it comes to listening to fans of the groups? Hopefully they are not doing it for the money! Fans know what good music is! Use your heads! Thank you for the time and patience! Mi Amigos. ❤😊🎉
The Grass Roots segment is excellent, too, especially their update of “Live for Today” ✅
All these acts honed their live stage shows to near perfection, from years of revival package tours, like old vaudeville performers who could time their beats to their collective pulses of their audience -
Both groups had a lot of hits and very big songs saw both live great live performers ... we forget to soon what an impact they had at that time Howard’s voice was great A when I hear them I think of the hollies , the buckinghams , three dog night , When you go see these great bands and hear you remember how many songs they recorded and some you forgot and remembered. Rock and roll hall of fame ... for these groups and the rascals. As well
@@donaldpruitt6787 Seriously? The Rascals aren't in?!? Today we lost Dino. The HOF needs to move quickly while we still have three of the four with us.
He aged but those gorgeous eyes never change really beautiful sleepy eyes😘
He sure was a cutie! 😍
@@Sheba-bh7lc Rob Grill? Absolutely. And Howard Kaylan actually looks better older to me than in 1967.
The Turtles.
They couldn’t use that name because they were in litigation I think.
I was fortunate enough to see so many of these bands play together on Monkees AND Happy Together Tours. Probably starting in 1986 in NJ and PA ❤
What memories!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this stuff!
Such great material; and tight presentation, what a joy to behold....
The Turtles were one of the very few bands by parents approved of, they were extremely strict especially with me, I was the oldest and only girl, I had 3 brothers.
YESSSS!!!!! FABULOUS!!!!
Great show!
Amazing they sound wonderful 😄😄😄😄😄
Man...The Turtles: just brilliant. And the band is so good. I'd love to know their names. Quality players like this have surely been busy chaps.
Superb
I thought that the vh1 house band behind flo and eddie rushed all their songs and used metal guitar where it was not needed
I personally got to know both bands in the early 2000's and that is not a house band. That is their respective bands.
Omg love Happy together 😂🤣💖
YES!
Met Rob Grill many years ago, super nice guy.
Never actually met Rob Grille but several times back in the 70d I saw him out and around town but couldn't put a name on that face but I thought he looked like someone famous. Several years later I saw him on a PBS SPECIAL . Only then did I realize I was right. He is famous but I when I saw him in a store I thought he looked more like an athlete than anything else. He even smiled at me and waved as if he knew why I was staring at him. RIP
Mark is such a clown. Gotta love him ;^)
He is actually very intelligent-went for his master’s and has been instructing others.
I saw The Turtles two times in concert around 1992.
A great band, EATEN Up
by the SHARKS 🦈 and bad
Law’s in rock and roll 🎸
I really enjoyed this. I think I have become a Flo and Eddie fan.
Two of my favorites 💯
Mark aged well, not so much for Howard who is not doing well today! Great group!
Love this video! The Turtles still sound so good!
The intro to "Sooner Or Later" sounds a lot like Boz Scaggs "It's Over".
Fantastic ❤❤ Flo is still as daft as a brush, and hasn't aged on bit 👍❤️😁
He is very intelligent, went for his master’s and is instructing other people now.
I would have loved to have seen this band with Dr. Hook and the medicine show.
Two great bands, that appeared to have great fun on stage with their music.
The amazing cowbell
Rob Grill was awesome!!
Excellent love songs😁👏👏👏👏👏
I enjoyed this.
LOVE! 💖
❤
Howard (Eddie) is one of neighbors here in the Seattle area. I wish he was doing better so he could tour again.
How is Howard? I think he retired.
I think the line in "Eleanore" that says "pride and joy, etc" was originally going to be "fab and gear etc." "Eleanore" was written as a gag. Howard never intended the song to be taken seriously and didn't think the group would actually be recording it. The record company kept asking them to write "another Happy Together," so Howard deliberately crafted a catchy silly pop tune with absurd lyrics.
Check out the new lyrics they wrote for "Eleanore" and one of their other songs for this comedy show - "Gary's mom, gee we're glad you're nude, and we're glad you're not a prude, take off your blouse, your dress, etcetera..." ruclips.net/video/oO3lEs_u5gU/видео.html
Hermosos, el tiempo ⏲️ y ellos dan vida.😘
19:29 Good updated version of "Happy Together". Enough of the old to stay true to the song, and enough modern to bring it up to date and inject extra energy into the song.
Love this show!
Superrrr chidas, musica del recuerdo, mis hermanos los mayores las escuchaban en estudiantes 1260, y radio capital súper fabulosas rolas yo era chica en aquel entonces, horita me traen muchos recuerdos hermosos
Yes indeed precious priceless memories 💓😊
Love it!
Luv it!
Enjoyed this. Thanks !
Oh I love them🥰😁my fave is Elenore 💖 those harmonies r unreal😉
Howard y Mark. Como pasan los años, yo estaba en la prepa, recuerdo a mis grandes amigos, vivíamos juntos y felices. Happy togheter
Day & nite,it's only right! No matter how U toss the dice!
RIP Rob Grill, gone too soon.
I agree
More cowbell.
2021 autopilot DJ radio my mix. Vera El
Shanon na,na! I know all this music!
Sooner or later!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
They were also great with Frank Zappa.
Around this time they were singing backup on the Ramones’ “poison heart.”
Hahaha!! I was wondering where the composer for "Katamari Damacy" got some of the bits used in the (often) bizarre songs to that odd ('whimsical', but we could do with more of that in the world) game.
Looks like I found a piece (~1:22).
In any case, great music! Just heard "She'd Rather Be With Me" on the radio (amazing, they still transmit "FM"! Hahaha...) the other day. Apparently hardly ever came across these musicians before - a shame, they're great!!!
_That song, particularly as performed here, has something of a "Rocky Horror Picture Show" feel to it, also - music and performance, more so than lyrics, I think. "Rocky Horror" is such an impressive mix of sort of the "highbrow" and "lowbrow", it's absolutely excellent art, IMO. Rocky Horror 'channeled' this, I imagine, much more than the other way around, but, it's part of the charm of this to me, I think. As another commenter wrote, love the humor and light-heartedness as part of high skill excellent musicianship!_
_Edit: 😂 "Gloria Estefan..."_
Don’t forget their role in Frank Zappa’s 200Motels
Or live at Fillmore East '71, Chunga's Revenge + Another Band from LA
Flo has aged better than Eddie. 😐
Mark Goodman the putz making negative comments about a Turtles song to the artists. Wonder how many hits Goodman (who faded away after the VH1 gig) released?
I thought the same, how f*****g rude and smug.
hes a DJ on XM, all those VH1 are on XM
Mark Goodman did come off sounding like a smug and condescending schlub.
Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman and the other members of The Turtles are superb singers and musicians, especially Johnny Barbata, one of rock music’s greatest drummers.
And, yes, The Turtles belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
@@kensellers4082 what’s a schlub? Presume it’s not good. Lol
@@waynesworld7804
Well, a schlub isn’t quite as bad as a schmuck or a gavone.
Interestingly enough I co-wrote the song and play the verse part for the band before it became a hit. They asked me if they could use that and I said yes not thinking that I could make money as a songwriter
Which song did you co-write?
More cowbells!!!
Another day to be put in the rock ‘n’ roll power hi I don’t know why I picked you up so long oh who have to choose who petite guys as well I’ve have to it’s all about rock ‘n’ roll music and Love they done with the world.
I remember the Turtles on Ed Sullivan! They sound remarkably similar, though these new versions rock with a modern edge.
The tempo was faster but still sounded good.
I remember recording Midnight Confessions with my portable tape recorder when they were on Midnight Special.
@@randyw.9916
I did that also when The Association appeared on The Everly Brothers’ show, “In Session,” circa 1975.
I used to play that cassette tape in my Volkswagen 411 in “glorious” mono.
PS I remember this audio adaptor device advertised in “Stereo Review Magazine, where you could plug a cable from the audio adaptor into your television set’s one earphone jack and then plug two cables from the audio adaptor device into your receiver or amplifier and get “amazing” simulated stereo sound coming out of your speakers.
In a review, one of “Stereo Review Magazine’s” sound engineers called the new device, “audio simplified.” Still, it was kind of cool to hear your favorite bands over the tv audio during those Sony “pre-surround sound”days.
