Also, pls remember to LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE (hit the BELL & select ALL) to join the AC Family on these real life stories of ants, termites, and other creatures! Ant/termite love forever! I still remember when he first posted the video when he rescued the first termite pair from one of the ant chambers! I must have missed an episode somewhere along the way because I just learned that they got eaten by invading ants 😭
-This is indeed Macrotermes gilvus.- (EDIT: On closer inspection, the species in the video are probably more closer to some species of Odontotermes, probably O. prodives/parandenticulatus. Either way, it's in the subfamily Macrotermitinae, a fungus grower. Care and life history are very similar between the two, but with Odontotermes likely requiring slightly lower temperatures. Both pest species in areas that they occur.) These are a highly specialized species of termite that DO NOT EAT wood. They instead farm a specialized species of fungus. They require high humidity and warm temperatures to survive. They do not store any fungal pellets like any attini ants do; instead the first workers forage for fungal spores that they can use. You can typically take a fungus garden from an already established colony from one of their mounds. Only give them a fungus garden when they have workers, the queen and king will not be able to keep the fungus alive by themselves. They need soil with high clay content to found in and a constant source of water. Pairs of termites can be sexed like roaches or mantises by looking at the couple last abdominal segments in the underbelly near the cloaca. EDIT: I would also like to add that the termites do somewhat indirectly feed on wood, where they will ingest dry leaves, grasses and wood in which they forage for, then poop it out, use it to build comb which they will seed with fungal spores, which will then grow and is what the termites will eat directly. Macrotermes/Odontotermes are very finicky during founding since establishing the fungus garden is usually the hardest part. Fungus can easily die from pathogens if there's not enough workers to routinely care for it, but also can be over eaten if there's too many workers. So a good balance needs to be met.
