    i don't think you need to be held accountable if someone sent a fake or exaggerated story - it's good to try of course, but just a disclaimer that you can't necessairly prove every one to be 100% correct should be enough, at least to me

    • @SkwithOv
      @SkwithOv 2 года назад +103

      if you believe it and share it in good faith, i don't think it's wrong on your part
      you're not intentionally sharing misinformation if that happens, and obviously i think we all understand that the stories are retellings and it's only human to not be 100% factually accurate - people have emotions and life experiences that shape how they percieve things, plus general human misremembering and exaggeration

    • @SkwithOv
      @SkwithOv 2 года назад +36

      like i'm not trying to say you should just share everything you get even if it feels fake, i just mean it's not your fault if one seems realistic or something you could see happening and you believe it and share it and it turns out to not be true or to not be 100% factual
      we do the best we can with the information we have, and you can't fact check life experiences and be 100% sure about every singe thing
      so what i'm saying is, don't be too hard on yourself
      you can't know or verify everything, trying and sharing in good faith is enough

      Back in the 90's I remember they were called the "happiness pills". I had hoped we would already be over that.
      I took mirtatzapin for anxiety and panic attacks. It didn't cure my depression, but it helped me catch sleep in the evening and kept my mood within a tolerable range. Meaning I still got anxious, but it didn't get to a panic, so slowly I learned it can feel good to go out. Just because I could trust my mood never to go over of what felt like tolerable stress. It was an immense thing for me, truly a life changing experience.
      In addition I got a chance to learn some relaxation techniques, that helped me get over the anxiety of just opening my front door and going to the hallway. And they helped me relax at a dentists appointment so well that once I almost fell asleep during a root canal treatment (not exaggerating, I didn't feel any pain, so was just able to relax in the chair).
      Need to add: it was the SSRI medication that made all further healing possible, because it stabilized my mood. Without it I would have never been able to feel like a normal person about going out and meeting strangers. Relaxation wouldn't be possible without that experience.

I mustered up the courage to ask my MD and was dismissed. I didn’t know what else to do, I felt it was just me, and I should have felt fine emotionally. It’s hard enough to advocate for yourself without having a hun be a jerk saying it’s your “lack of vitamin D.”
      Also, fun fact from a hematologist, you don’t begin to increase your vitamin D and feel better in as little as several weeks as this hun stated. It takes several months to see this increase.

    I am a neuroscientist (I have a BS in a Neuroscience and Psychology working on getting my PhD in Neuroscience). While pharmacology is not my specialty I have taken many classes and done a lot of personal research because I take SSRI, SNRI, and Adderall to manage my ADHD and chronic anxiety, and depression. I think what really bothers me about the second story is how she hears "makes serotonin more available" and thinks "tricks me into thinking I am happy." That is SUCH a leap of logic and is exactly why people are scared of taking medication when they need it. There is no tricking occurring. Serotonin is one of many substances used to send messages from one neuron to another. People with biological/genetic serotonin issues for some reason have issues with the reception of serotonin by the receiving cell (whether it be not enough receptors, not enough serotonin released, or other issues we don't know for sure). All SSRIs do is block the sending cell from taking the serotonin back into itself (for recycling purposes) too quickly. This type of medication allows the already released serotonin to exist between the sending and receiving cell longer to allow better chance of effective reception. Serotonin is found in highest quantities in your gut, she is correct! But due to the mechanism of action of this drug it will only impact these reuptake functions which are found exclusively in your brain. Serotonin, as with any other substance used to communicate between neurons, is found more than just in one place, performing one function. Which is why we don't just give people serotonin to make them happy, the impact of that could be deadly (look up serotonin syndrome, a rare but possibly fatal side effect to excessive serotonin). This is not to say medication is right for everyone, its not and the side effects are not worth it to some and that's okay! Anyway, pharmacology lecture aside, you could make the case that ANYTHING we do to make ourselves feel good is just "tricking" our brain into feeling happy. The placebo effect (which does not even require lying) is a very real form of treatment that personally, I use on myself constantly. When you feel so low you would rather not exist, sometimes the only option is to trick yourself to make it to the next day. No one has any right to shame how people treat their issues as long as they are not harming themself or others. We are all just trying to be happy and live a good life, some of us just need a little chemical help. Thank you for your intellectual insight to all of the issues brought up in your videos, your attitude and desire to help others is why you're one of my favorite anti-MLM/anti-scam creators.

      The facts of the story didn't add up. If someone is under the influence at scene they have to get that person tested and booked right away. It literally takes hours and hours to go through it all because the first thing they have to do is get them tested. Then on top of all of that she has to get bailed out and gather all of her stuff some of which was surely in the vehicle that was impounded as evidence. Sober up enough to find the information of the victim and where she is in the hospital and find someone to give her a ride to the hospital. All of this under the author's own admission that she was in the hospital for 24 hours.
      I'm not saying her son wasn't in the hospital at some point so the picture isn't proof. I'm not saying the crash didn't happen, so even proof of the accident isnt proof of the story. She could have very easily have included a transcript of the supposed mediation that occured, what she claims the lady also tried to recruit the mediator? Also, we all know that that hun would have spent the time after being released from jail trying to get all of her product out of the car that was impounded in order to make her deliveries. She doesn't want her customers contacting her up line about missing product.
      I'm not saying that the author hasn't been in a fender bender and someone has pitched her an MLM.
      I'm saying that the way that author claims the story happened is not true. Some version of it might be but not the version she tried to pass on us.

      I thought so too, and I didn't comment because at this point it has been two years and my comment is unimportant, but because she addressed it I'm scrolling through comments to see what people are saying. I will be honest, I'm still skeptical. I don't doubt she was in a car accident, that's not the issue, but the way she described the MLM hun was just...so out of place compared to the seriousness of the story? It seemed like she was describing a traumatic event in her life, and then dropping in a cartoon character. It just put me off, and I don't want to accuse anyone of being a liar, but there are enough people on this earth that would unfortunately do anything for attention, so this kind of thing isn't out of the realm of possibility

      (Leaving this here because I gotta say it to somebody) Things I don’t completely doubt: car crash happened, the one at fault was a MLM hun and high, son ended up in the hospital. Things I do doubt a lot: MLM hun said the son would survive if he used her products, MLM hun confronted the emailer at the hospital.
      The emailer provided evidence of her son being hospitalized and a car crash happening maybe even a court date but none of that is proof for the extremely exaggerated behavior of the MLM hun that doesn’t make sense (even if she was high, high people act erratic but it’s just feels made up and I don’t know how to exactly explain)
      I empathize with the pain of a crazy woman trying to justify a car crash and the rage and sadness of your son being hurt. But that wasn’t the fake sounding part of the story :/

    I've been taking SSRIs since I was fourteen and I have a psychology degree. That driving video is SO wrong and SO damaging and the fact that she's SO confident about the nonsense she's spewing makes me even more angry. SSRIs have been a literal lifesaver for me and countless others. As psychiatric drugs go, they're one of the safest and most effective types. It's not about "faking being happy," it's about (putting this very simplistically) your brain not having enough serotonin and the medication helping your brain make the most out of what serotonin you do have so that you can, hopefully, get to a healthy mood baseline. They don't make you euphoric; they help you operate like a person who doesn't have a chemical imbalance. SSRIs normally go along with talk therapy in a treatment plan because, yes, maladaptive habits and thinking patterns are also part of depression. Some doctors may prescribe vitamins like vitamin D and vitamin B6, depending on the case.

    I just want to say I think we should be careful about accusing stories of being fake just because something does not match up with our own experience. It may cause people who would otherwise be inclined to share decide not to for fear of being accused of lying. But it’s important to share these stories, even ones that sound extreme. Even ones that are written in an emotional way. No one has a monopoly on the spectrum of human experience and can definitively say that something didn’t happen just because it has never happened…to you. Be descerning perhaps, but please be careful in what you say. For my part, I do believe that story could have definitely happened. I’ve met some pretty entitled people in my life. If you haven’t, that’s great, but there plenty of is out there who have.

      Yes. I sent in a horror story myself recently, and I worried it would sound made up. I tried to tell it in an entertaining way, but basically Kirby salespeople were in my house for a little over 8 hours one Saturday. It was insane. Most of that time, one guy (it was his first day, I believe) spent vacuuming my carpet in the living room while my sister and I watched movies in another room. They just drove up and dropped him off and left. He seemed nice and I didn't want to kick him out and make him stand out by the road waiting on them ....it was so awkward!! But he wasn't doing any harm...didn't do anything to sell, just followed some paper he had and vacuumed and switched out stuff on the machine and vacuumed more...we weren't even in the room for most of the time.
      Then he called the salespeople back and they came in and tried to manipulate me for at least an hour. I was trying not to laugh at their insane "logic" and tactics most of the time. I swear it was over 8 hours, but I think I just said it was 7+ in the email. I thought it sounded unbelievable to say 8...but it really was. I think there was a trainer lady and a van full of trainees, and she was pushing their way into homes and leaving them and then they'd call her to do the sales part once they did their "demo" part. Dude in my house was just really bad at the demo, lol.

I take SSRI for years now, and currently with the supervision of my therapist I am on smaller and smaller doses because I don't feel I need it anymore and we decided to stop it. I have never suffered any of the possible side effects, not even at the beginning of taking the medication. I know this is not the case for everyone, and I don't want to invalidate anyone who had worse experience with SSRIs. But I feel that I need to be vocal about the fact that taking SSRIs and going to therapy helped me a lot and saved me from so much harm that my brain could have done to me. I could start building relationships, I am capable of working, I managed to finish my degree, etc. This is not the direct effect of the meds, but as it lifted my depression and eased my anxiety, I could concentrate on things like these and move ahead in life. Please consider your psychiatric professional's advice instead of random MLM reps regarding things like mental health or related medication.

Most psych meds when you look them up say "mechanism unknown" meaning they don't know exactly how they work, then they say that they think it does blah blah blah. Ssri's nowadays are so much more "clean" than older gen antidepressants, meaning most people don't "feel" any different but after 6-8 weeks they feel objectively "better". Also although they have all of the side effects listed most people don't report them as occurring to the point that they would discontinue the medication. As for making you feel artificially happy that is complete nonsense. They take the awful down a few notches so you can work with your therapist on problem solving, etc. They can be lifesavers. I went off my meds several times because I was so ashamed of being on them at the time - it ended up with me going into crisis and getting hospitalized. I am now doing well and living a full and fulfilling life thanks to my meds.
    My anxiety and depression meds help me manage my symptoms enough so I can actually do things like go out and get sun and get exercise and get nutrition. My meds for my brain is similar to someone needing insulin for diabetes or medication for any other long term issue!
    It’s not for everyone but it’s also not a cure all. Yes some meds before I found the right ones were AWFUL both physically and mentally for me- but that’s because it was the wrong meds. I’m so grateful I have the right meds now that help give me breathing space and energy to actually focus on recovery.

    As someone who has struggled off and on with depression my whole life, people like that mlm hun piss me off SO MUCH. I've been on an SSRI for a few years now and I've never felt better. The SSRI is what enabled me to feel well enough to do the things she's talking about - exercise, eat better, seek out friendships, etc. The fact that people like her can't seem to grasp the concept that when you're depressed, you aren't capable of seeking out solutions on your own is infuriating. In addition, one of my children was suffering from suicidal depression a few years ago, and I firmly believe that if we hadn't gotten him on an antidepressant, all the talk therapy in the world wouldn't have made a difference, and he wouldn't be alive and thriving today. SSRIs don't work for everyone, but for a lot of people they are literal life savers. This chick can kick rocks.

    I had a strong reaction to the 2nd story because I've never found an antidepressant that actually helped me with depression and I tried so many over my entire adolescence and young adulthood. Every time I tried I would notice no difference, get horrible side effects, and/or have even worse depression. But I did try. While it was frustrating to lose progress every time I was trying so hard to improve my mental health, I was able to enter full remission a couple years ago with a combination of frequent therapy sessions, exercise, vitamin D (prescribed due to severe deficiency, lol thanks PNW weather), and better management of my other medical conditions through an endocrinologist.
    The only medication that ever improved my mental health was an anti-anxiety medication I briefly took as a teenager, but my psychiatrist was worried about its addictive properties and took me off once I was starting to function better. (Future anti-anxiety medications also didn't help due to terrible side effects or the fact that they were primarily antidepressants.)
    All this to say that if antidepressants don't work for you, you're not alone and it is possible to heal through other interventions that address causes of your depression, such as other medical issues, lifestyle, environment, and trauma. But you won't know until you try, so *please work with medical professionals* who will be able to guide you better than any salesperson.
    I'm not anti-medication and I would love to take a pill for my mental health as I already take daily medication for my other conditions without issues. But for everyone who has not found relief for depression through medication, please do not stop working with doctors and mental health professionals. If meds really don't work for you, you can try other things!

    I would be lying if I said I hadn't also felt like the story you're referring to in the opening seemed a bit too outlandish. I didn't doubt the car crash scenario, but I did find the lengths they claimed the distributor had taken to be unrealistic, even for MLM standards. I think it's unreasonable for them to be offended that you reached out to try and validate the story (like you said, your credibility is essential to what you're trying to accomplish) and sending a picture of her child doesn't really verify the part of the story that sounded unusual anyways...it just made you feel bad.
    On the flip side, there's only so much you can do to ensure the validity of all online submissions, so it's not as if you don't do your due diligence. I would say for every potentially false story there are hundreds of truthful ones. Something we can all reasonably see based on our own experiences with these MLM people. So I don't think there's anything for you to feel bad about. You have always made it a point in your coverage on these topics to be factual, level-headed, and understanding. 🙂

At it’s worst, I was getting 1-2 hours of sleep at night, couldn’t eat more than saltine crackers, was having multiple panic attacks a day, and couldn’t care for my toddler, so my husband missed work. I fully believe I would have died if not for SSRI’s. Also, they don’t trick your brain into being happy. I still cry, get anxious, grieve, etc. That’s why I’m still in therapy even after meds. And as far as the gut health thing - I have IBS, and my SSRI has nearly cured it. I’m symptom free most days now. So not really interested in the overpriced Arbonne supplements 🤦🏻‍♀️

    "What they do to change the chemical compound of your brain"

    • @sakatababa
      @sakatababa 2 года назад

      not to burst your bubble but brain is composed of neurons. compounds is the right noun in this case. in chemistry we call compounds what a layman calls chemicals.
      more precise would be to use "change balance of neurotransmittive compounds in your brain".
      i could allow "of your brain" if you view brain as a whole with neurotransmitters but that is a huge stretch.

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 2 года назад +4

      @@sakatababa Yeah except that she used it in the singular form. The brain is made not of A COMPOUND, but of COMPOUNDS. The word she was looking for was not "compound," but "composition."
      It makes more sense in this case, as a layman, to say that you're changing the chemical composition of your brain (which is usually HOW the layman describes it) because your brain is composed of chemicals. A lot of them. Taking meds changes the amount of certain chemicals that are already within it. It can also change how they're utilized. Thus, it isn't actually changing the compounds at all, or even the chemicals itself- rather, it changes the composition of your brain in relation to the chemicals within it. It's made of a different amount of the same stuff. It's composed in a different way. Different amounts. Different placements. Same compounds. Just a different composition.
      Also, I can tell you're into chemistry, possibly even a chemist- so I feel kind of bad correcting something like this since I wasn't even educated on chemistry, let alone am an expert- but, "compound" and "chemical" are not exactly synonyms. Compounds are comprised of chemicals. In fact they are chemicals, like everything else. But they're specifically a "compound" when they're composed of two or more elements, AKA chemicals.

    • @sakatababa
      @sakatababa 2 года назад

      @@catpoke9557 "Yeah except that she used it in the singular form" - which is a far less of an error. to be even more nitpicky, it isn't really an error because we are talking about ssri's that are affecting reuptake of a single compound. serotonin.
      "It makes more sense in this case, as a layman, to say that you're changing the chemical composition of your brain (which is usually HOW the layman describes it) because your brain is composed of chemicals." - there is so much to tear down here so i must break it in separate points. here it goes:
      2a) changing the chemical composition - is she going silicon rather then carbon. that would be changing chemical composition. not once in half a century have i heard a layman saying that before you, today.
      2b) if brain is composed of chemicals then you are composed of air. because that is the exact same thing. even more, we use every molecule of oxygen for crebs cycle in energy production of every single cell in our body.
      the entirety of the middle paragraph is trying to promote idea that brains cromposition is based on neurotransmitters. see point 2b. then car would be its fuel and wiper fluid and every single one of us would be our own excrement. water is not part of the waterwheel. think about that.
      i can tell that you are not educated in chemistry. in chemistry we do not use the word "chemicals". ever. it does not mean anything. heck, we rarely use the word elements and chemical elements only when talking to non chemists. we call them by their names. i would never say chemical element sulfur. i would just say sulfur. we use chemical elements to differentiate from, for example, mechanical elements (basic, monolithic part of a machine or a group of a distinctive components with clear division and function).
      in the end, and this is the most important argument of all, you can't say for sure that you *know* what she wanted to say vs what she said. there is nothing but assumption on your part in that. it goes more to your bias and lack of education then anything else about her.
      just admit you made a mistake and learn from it. there is no shame in making an error. there is in clutching to it in feverish delusion. learn something from this. don't be that guy that is teaching doctors how to do surgeries or chefs how to cook.

    the story about the Norwax Hun, pissed me off so badly, I was also confronted by a woman in the waiting room of the doctor's office when my son was little and we had just got his autism & ADHD diagnosis, so he was having outbursts and meltdown quite frequently and while my husband was deployed to Iraq they were especially bad because not only is his dad not there who he adores, but I had just broken my back and had to have spinal fusion surgery, so he went from having a very active life with both mom and dad running around with him and his little brother to pretty much wear them out by evening, to pretty much doing nothing but going to his pre-school and then home. My husband wasnt there and of course I was in no condition to be able to run around. Well back to the doctor's office and this woman sees him having a meltdown because I told him I didnt have the ipad with me and he was going to have to settle for just playing his learning app on my phone or nothing at all, well like with most kids with autism, they can be set off in a split second and it could even be that they were given the thing they had asked for, but were then pissed because they were given it and wanted to be told no instead, talk about confusing and sometimes walking on eggshells. Well this woman came up to me and started asking me all kinds of questions because she could see I was at the end of my rope, but had to keep holding on because I had 3 kids counting on me(also had custody of my sister's son at the same time, who is 8 months older than my son and extremely ADHD also) and limited help from my mom and MIL when they were not at work. This woman asked me what was I feeding these kids as they were high strung(most people thought my nephew and oldest son were twins) and bouncing off the walls, I simply told her that they both had ADHD and one also had autism, still thinking they were twins, she had the nerve to ask me what did I do while pregnant that did this harm to my kids, I just looked at her like she was insane and told her, lady I dont know you and I dont need your 100 and 1 questions, while I am just trying to make it day by day without ending up in the mental hospital. She then tried to tell me that if I tried her Young Living oils it would take care of all their issues and make my life easier also, and that I could also mix a few together and use it as my perfume to attract a man to come into my life and help me with all these wild little boys since obviously I had bad taste i men, which was why I was there alone with all 3 kids by myself. I still til this day dont know how she missed my wedding set as it is a family heirloom passed down from my FIL's family and its huge, I flashed my hand at her and said I am married and I honestly have no time for your oils, but thank you anyways. She then pointed out that I could sneak them in the kids' food to calm them down, I still tried to ignore her, she then tried to lure my 2 year old to come see her, he was deaf and thankfully didnt hear her, but he has always been the calm and quiet kid when he was little but it was because he wasnt hearing the commotion the other 2 created everywhere they went. She then had the nerve to ask me "where is your absent fake husband?" and that's when I lost it and just started crying because it had been days since I had spoken to him which always worried me because when a solider was hurt or killed, they shut down outgoing communication so no one could get the info back to someone before the family could be notified. My only answer was "leave me the f*ck alone, my husband is in Iraq and I dont even know if he is dead or alive at the moment as I have not spoken to him in almost a week, so get out of my face, I dont want to buy your oils and youre not about to put them on my kids, get lost!" Well I must have said that pretty loud because a few of the staff came running when they heard the crying screaming and me mistakenly cursing in a pediatrics office. While all this interaction was going on with her, I didnt even realize she had no kid with her, she was just hanging out in there and trying to sell her oils to over stressed and sleep deprived mothers, she never went up to the dads that were they alone, unless it was to tell them what an awesome sight it was to see a man taking care of his child/ren unlike some of the fathers of the other kids in this office, and then she looked over her shoulder at me and this was after I had told her my husband was in Iraq, I guess she thought I was lying. What shocked her was the guy she told this too, was in the same boat as I was, but it was his wife who was deployed and just so happened to be deployed with the same unit as my husband was. He jumped all over her also and that is when the staff kicked her out, because he was the one that realized she didnt even have a kid with her, she had been telling staff for over 2 hours that her DIL was in the back with her grandson and she figured she could help out some stressed out parents with bad kids by selling them some oils and a diffuser. The office manager informed her there was so soliciting in the building or on the medical center's grounds and that if she didnt leave immediately they were going to have her arrested for trespassing. They did offer to call them for me if I wanted to press harrassment charges, but I declined because I didnt need anymore stress in my life, two wild 4 year olds and a deaf 2 year old that made up his own signs for things instead of the proper ASL that we were trying to teach him , but only I could fully figure out what it was he was trying to say to me. Thankfully he had 2 surgeries on his ears that corrected his hearing, as he had all the correct anatomy in there, but something had caused excess skin to grow in the womb which kept parts of his ears from moving correctly, which then kept the eardrum from functioning correctly, and I can proudly say, no oils were used on him to correct his hearing lol (sorry, i couldnt pass it up), I can say today they are happy, healthy and definitely 1000% calmer, and my oldest has learned to not have meltdown or outbursts since he was approx 10 or 11, he is still very sensitive most of the time, but he is one of the most thoughtful, caring and sweetest humans I know, and I am not saying that just because I am his mom, because I also let both my boys know when they are being jerks. They are now 18(nephew), 17 & 15 and hopefully by this time next year, Ill either be pregnant or holding a precious baby girl in my arms as we are doing IVF. Also, doing that without the help of any oils, even though I have been told my fertility issues are due to not using them and that if I buy the oils. I'll be given the fertility recipe, all I can think is ewww gross, im not drinking oils, much less doing it while while trying to get pregnant. I honestly think these oily huns sit around making up stories that certain mixtures of oils can cure everything, except the fact their heads are up their asses believing all of the Young Living and Doterra lies

Others with depression might not see the same results. It's the same with medication - some meds aren't effective for everybody and it takes trial-and-error to find a treatment that works well for you. For everyone feeling shame at not achieving results when being told to "just exercise" or "eat healthy" or whatever simple fix some layperson prescribes, know that it takes a lot of things to get and stay healthy, and sometimes that includes medications. I'm rooting for you.

    I did Optavia when it was named Medifast many moons ago. I can confirm the Gallbladder issues as I ended up in the hospital for emergency surgery for a gangrenous gallbladder. I discovered shortly after surgery that it was pretty much caused from complications of rapid weight loss while on the Medifast program; and this was 5 years after I walked away.
    Another lovely side effect was losing almost 1/3 of my hair. I ended up cutting off 18” to help hide how thin my hair had become. Although I did discover I look fabulous with short hair, so that was a win. It took years till I finally got about 90-ish% of my hair back.
    When looking back I realized how dangerous the diet was as I was eating between 700-900 calories a day and running 5 miles, 5 days a week. I was just so desperate to conform to societies ridiculous body standards I was willing to put my health at risk to achieve it.
    It wasn’t until I was a size 10, 170 lbs, and still considered obese that I realized I was never going to be thin enough. I was expected to lose another 40-45 lbs. with the way my body distributes fat, I would have looked emancipated. That’s when I walked away.
    Weight truly is not an indication of health as the past 10+ years of my labs show me to be in perfect health (all my labs are pretty much dead center of the normal range). I’m just fluffy and I’m truly ok with it.
