Lol, i studied in the city where Grolsch originates from (Enschede, Netherlands), had lot of those local bottles during parctice sessions, but using the bottles like that never occured to me. Clever!:)
I spill beer and i sweat all over my guitar all the time lol it's like prerequisite for metal guitarists I wouldn't even consider a les Paul bc it would almost definitely get fucked up haha
yes, use it on both sides. doesn't matter where the strap button is placed, even on an SG where it's on the back of the guitar. Use it. The straplocks actually enable you to do some cool tricks like throwing your guitar around your back and catching it again.
Just when I didn't think I could appreciate this dude any more than I already do, he demonstrates his love of beer. Justin needs to move to the US and run for president.
Thanks Justin. I've been fashioning my own version of home made strap locks for years like various flat plastics (like the flat bread bag tags) , or whatever would snap over stock buttons.Fender now sells the Grolsch bottle washer for about $1 (US) each, and is actually much cheaper than buying the beer. New Schaller S Locks have a thicker strap side shaft for leather straps, and a heavier (thicker) body side button screw that is helpful if your old screw was stripped or wallerd out, but may be a little tight in a small standard hole. Locks are a must have for you young hair band rockers doing the guitar acrobatics. Thanks again!
I actually broke my foot because I didn't have strap locks. I was standing up playing, and I sat down to adjust the amp. When the tension was relieved, the button on the guitar slipped out of the eye of the strap. I stood back up, there was enough friction to hold the body of the guitar up and the headstock went straight at my foot, hitting on the top of the arch and fracturing the bone. Lesson learned.
i appreciate so much what you've been doing on this small things which we will get by experience our self, by knowing from your experience we skip the fallen guitar part, thanks anw
What strap locks to use I googled. Then I thought I should look if Justin has a video on it and sure enough he does and even demonstrates all the conventionally used kinds. Amazing
thanks justin got myself a brand new gibson les paul studio 4 weeks ago 2500 worth Australian dollars. also bought a new gibson strap as well. last week I was playing a bent down to pick up a dropped pick . Luckily I was holding the neck when the strap lifted off the button . Gave me a fright I went and watched this video on strap advice, Then went to ebay and bought nickel schaller strap locks I am not using a strap until they are on keep up the vids your work is much appreciated I'm a fan
Haha, I just wanted to post about the beer bottle thingy, but then I saw You cover that as well. I also use that locking types now (the cheap kind sold by 'Thomann'), what I don't like is that it rattles when You're sitting down with the strap still attached.
There is a system by Planet Waves that is similar to that dunlop system with one big difference: the locking system is directly mounted to the strap what makes it quite comfotable to use. another benefit is that you don't need to change any pins on your guitar. It's called "Planet Lock System".
I remove the screw and place a washer on the screw then put the strap underneath the washer then put the screw back into the guitar. I do that for each strap screw. It is a bit more difficult to remove the strap (if you need to put the guitar in a case or something) but it is very cheap!
I had Schallers and took them off because I didn't like all of the clattering metal-on-metal sounds when I moved. It vibrates right through the guitar and pickups and comes out through the amp. (You can hear what I'm talking about when Justin jiggles the Schaller to show how secure it is. I may try the plastic options, though.
didnt know these existed. i could use one, my strat almost smacked the floor a few weeks ago. i was just barely able to catch it with my foot thankfully. thanks for the advice
I've had the metal spring-loaded pins on the Schaller ones actually fracture in the metal and fail...I would never recommend them out of experience. The bottle washers are surprisingly excellent...and you get a beer or two! My favourite are the Dunlop ones...very neat.
strap locks are very useful with les pauls, Tokais expecially, as the stock nuts are really small on tokais. I've been using Dunlop metallic 'Straplok' .
I never gave any thought of this. I own a Gibson Les Paul, so I am definately going to get a strap lock. Since I live 7 km from the Grolsch factory, guess what I'm going to get!
Fender also do a locking type strap lock as well that has their 'F' logo on it. Instead of pulling to release, you push in the button. I'm not so sure on the security of that as it's easier to knock the button in by accident. There are also some cheapo "schaller" type ones that work the same way, but don't fit onto guitars that have a real Schaller lock installed on them.
I've used mine for a while now, and I'll say, the nylon is much softer and smoother than the other nylons i have.. I was very pleased with that. The straplocks are amazing! So easy! :o My only concern is that the ends of it (with the lock system) is scraping on the wood, but I guess they're made to NOT do so? If it doesnt ruin my guitars body wood, I'll be a fan of Planet Waves for many years to come :D
I'm a little afraid to put locks on my acoustic. It's an Ovation with the rounded composite body. My other guitar is an old "lawsuit era" Japanese copy of a gibby 175D from the seventies. It only has a peg in the tail and I use a Martain leather strap around the headstock to attach my strap to. I played around with the Dunlop lock in GC but didn't care for it very much.
I have the red rubber seal, using it on my bass, but the red rubber ones actually pulled out my strap buttons from the guitar, so I'd recommend getting cheap strap locks instead.
I made a strap button that I would like to get patented some day. you can take the strap on and off pretty easily and use any strap without it being permanently attached to the guitar. The biggest problem is the way the straps are made the slits in the strap are too long on some straps. make sure you get a strap with the smallest slit you can find ,you can have a strap button as big as 1 inch diameter and some of the slits will pull over it.
They are great. The nylon ones can cut a little bit though - I'm planning on getting one of those shoulder pads that Planet Waves also sells. Almost as if they did it on purpose!
i like how he talks about the rubber washer being the thing you want when you buy the beer rather than buying the beer and getting the rubber washer free
Justin could do a vid on tieing ur shoes and Id watch it. will defently learn something and always get a good laugh . I always hang on to guitar when I walk down the road with it across my back and now I can do this to strap . well hell probly hang on 2 it anyway lol
LOL I had these two plastic pieces come with my guitar strap and for months just looked at them like "what are you" xD Finally occurred to me to Google and found this! Luckily, I've only ever had one strap slip and thankfully no falls but now I popped these bad boys on so I should be good!
Thanks for sharing that info. I needed to see a couple of different styles of strap guards to make a satisfying decision about what to get. My guitar 🎸 slipped off the peg this week & freaked me out. Fortunately it resulted in a microscopic nick to the back of neck(not in a place near where my hand goes.) Definitely need to get some of these.
I use a relatively cheap Flambé Dunlop woven strap with leather ends and it was really difficult to put it on. And I tried to pull it off with no success. So I don't know if it's safe to use this strap without locks or I should get some.
Justin, you forgot the 'Planet Lock' system by Planet Waves. They go over the stock strap pins. You put them on the pin and there's a wheel that locks the opening so it can't pull itself over and off the pin unless you unlock it again. Also, taking screws in and out of the guitar weakens the wood - this is also a personal note of caution as you said you took the Schaller one out for this video.
I just got my first pair of strap locks with my Epiphone Les Paul. I'm not sure which type they are, but they work very well. They say Epiphone on them.
I'm not sure what you mean by lubricate it, nor how it would be effective. The clattering comes from the post on the guitar being metal and the receiver on the strap being metal and they clank against each other while attached. Wouldn't a lubricant goop up the post and be exposed when the strap is removed, or are you talking about maybe a teflon shrink tube type thing? That might work if it doesn't make the fit too tight.
Good tip, thx for the video. I just thought of a simpler option that would save me the beer ;) (not that I wouldn't mind, hehe)... I'm just gonna unscrew the nut and before I screw it back into my bass, cut out a round piece of hard plastic from that hard type of packaging plastic with a hole in the middle for the nut... now this should work if I put it all together infront of the strap before I attach it to the bass... I hope ;)
Always enjoy your lessons!! But you should have mentioned the main reason you should wear a guitar strap is you're free to play the guitar well and not moving it and shifting it around constantly. ;-)
i bought this planetwaves planet lock, is it good enough? im using it on my yamaha apx500 and it's kinda wierd in the back or i should say behind the neck part (the upper bout)
The nylon cuts into my neck. I might try a gel shoulder pad from Planet Waves to fix that. I like the ease of removal. My guitar doesn't fit in it's case so well when the strap is on it. There's soft rubber on the parts that sit against the guitar. It protrudes just a little further than where the screws sit so nothing scrapes against the guitar. It does leave some residue sometimes, but you can wipe that off easily. Wish they made one with metal locks though. Not so sure about this plastic.
You forgot about Planet Waves 'Planet Lock' straps, where the locking mechanism is part of the strap itself. £20 for a leather one or less than a tenner for a polypropylene one off Amazon.
Astonishing how some firms charge £25 or $ for Schaller locks when there are identical ones for £2-£5 - which possibly even come from the same factory. Mine were through EBay and cost £2.19 (plus a 2 week wait while they came from the far east).
I've had to catch a Fender Jazz Bass a couple of times because the straps were so bad they came off whenever I moved around with it.. Now I always buy straplocks.. Gonna be trying out a new system from Planet Waves - anyone knows if they're any good?
Great advice, I did not know how they worked being a novice but they are a great idea, i am deffo going to get some, Thanks for a really good video :o)
Love the videos Justin. Working my way through your major scaled DVD at the moment and finding it very helpful. Anyways, is there anyway you could do a lesson on quickly shifting from strumming to picking single note lines? I really struggled with this and there were no lessons at all, so maybe it could be helpful? Keep up the good work!
Nice one, Justin....Love the beer sketch! What do you think of the redesigned Schallers? I found that old style threads were a tad too short for thick straps
I don't know whether it's the right english word, but you can get watertight ring - won't get a free beer with it, but if you take one of the bigger ones, you'll be near to ripping out the screw before the strap goes off ;)
Well,well,WELL-finally! Guitar lessons for dummies. THANKX Justin ;) signed 60yearyoung-hott-Meemaw-aka-Grrranny:yesss! suggestions?, be$t but €heap-pest beginners guitar??? Thanx again justin g.

I assume you're talking about the strap button with a 1/4 jack in the middle? Yeah obviously you can't replace it unless you put the Schaller strap button next to it (which would be a no-no if you've got anything slightly expensive), but you can still replace the strap button that's near the neck, which is the one the strap tend to come off the most often.
The choice is yours. You can do strap locks with a couple of disc washers from your local hardware or suppliers like Screwfix. >grabs neck of guitar with beer soaked hand
nooooooooooo
I spill beer and i sweat all over my guitar all the time lol it's like prerequisite for metal guitarists I wouldn't even consider a les Paul bc it would almost definitely get fucked up haha
It adds character
Thanks, just one of the many things about guitars I had forgotten!
the first thing i did after watching this video was grab a beer, thanks mate. great info.

Quick tip #3.5 - Don't spill beer on your guitar!
Quick tip #3.7 - But should you do, wipe it off right away!
Just when I didn't think I could appreciate this dude any more than I already do, he demonstrates his love of beer. Justin needs to move to the US and run for president.
Unfortunately, immigrants can't be President. :(
Thanks Justin, as a beginner didn't know about strap locks. Will get some.
Did you get some ?
Thanks Justin. I'm speechless Justin u are so nice guy helping people with so important tips. i praise your effort.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who really enjoys their Matons guitar strap. So comfy
Thank you you just saved my guitar. I was worried about this happening to my guitar but I will be buying one of these strap locks soon. Thanks man

The beer cap trick is a pretty neat idea.
Great tip and Grolsch happens to be my favorite beer!
I remove the screw and place a washer on the screw then put the strap underneath the washer then put the screw back into the guitar. I do that for each strap screw. It is a bit more difficult to remove the strap (if you need to put the guitar in a case or something) but it is very cheap!

I use a Planet Wave locking strap. The locking part is a thick plastic but it seems pretty sturdy.
This is extremely helpful! I saw a one guy who duck taped his strap to his Les Paul. Though there must be a better way and here it is.
Very good information. I wounder why thy strap locks are not installed in the first place?
I've had the metal spring-loaded pins on the Schaller ones actually fracture in the metal and fail...I would never recommend them out of experience. The bottle washers are surprisingly excellent...and you get a beer or two! My favourite are the Dunlop ones...very neat.
Planet Waves also makes locking guitar straps if you don't want to fiddle with replacing or adding hardware.
I use this beer-method on some of my acoustic guitars...
planet waves makes kind of special locking straps as well for 20 bucks or something...
Justin try planet wave strap locks got mine from them at convention.
Liked as soon as he took a sip
Great tip with Grolsch rubber top. I have to check if it works with Czech Bernard beer top. I think it's more popular in Slovenia than Grolsch. ;)
Schaller S Locks are the best I've used.
After watching this, I went down to my Asda and bought some bottles of Grolsch. Cheers for the techniques.
strap locks are very useful with les pauls, Tokais expecially, as the stock nuts are really small on tokais. I've been using Dunlop metallic 'Straplok' .
Great advice Justin and very funny with the beer!

I have the Schaller Strap Locks on all of my guitars, and have outfitted around six or so straps also.

very helpful, I love the beer tip!
What is your Strat/Tele strap ? (the one with the quite a big red circle in front). I like it very much.
I use a relatively cheap Flambé Dunlop woven strap with leather ends and it was really difficult to put it on. And I tried to pull it off with no success. So I don't know if it's safe to use this strap without locks or I should get some.

The Grolsch thing was genius, never thought of that! Being dutch myself, this was pretty easy to get a hold of :) Thanks!
I use the plastic one made by Dunlop and a personally like those the best
Think I've seen it here and there. Def not a common beer, but pretty sure it can be found at least somewhere in most major cities.
The nylon cuts into my neck. I might try a gel shoulder pad from Planet Waves to fix that. I like the ease of removal. My guitar doesn't fit in it's case so well when the strap is on it. I managed to give myself a really impressive black eye when my guitar strap came off and the head swung up and hit me in the face. Good advice Justin!
Yikes! Good luck explaining that one to anyone who wasn't there. "My guitar jumped up."
couldn't the button still slip through the slot? or does it use friction to hold on?
Astonishing how some firms charge £25 or $ for Schaller locks when there are identical ones for £2-£5 - which possibly even come from the same factory. Mine were through EBay and cost £2.19 (plus a 2 week wait while they came from the far east).

Grolsh Beer MMMMM, too rich for most here in the Ozarks though, excellent tip also. Thanks.

Thanks for the video! Awesome information as Always! Love your work!
Thanks for the tip! I should use that locks.
Thanks for the tip, mate. Hope you had a nice drink.
I use Grolsch washers... they work, and all my guitars have their original straplocks installed.
Do you place the locks on both ends of the strap??
The beer option for me! :D

I would get les paul epiphone 100 about 250 if you have more money get the standard
You can see the marks on the 10th and 11th frets where your beer soaked fingers touched
What's a good strap lock for an acoustic-electric guitar? I can't put shallers on there because then I won't be able to plug it in.
I assume you're talking about the strap button with a 1/4 jack in the middle? Yeah obviously you can't replace it unless you put the Schaller strap button next to it (which would be a no-no if you've got anything slightly expensive), but you can still replace the strap button that's near the neck, which is the one the strap tend to come off the most often.
any recommendations for a 335 style guitar? I just bought a D'Addario locking strap and it wouldn't fit on the back!
Any advice about the pin at the other end?
Thanks! That was too annoying problem for me.
The washer comes loose on those strapliocks make sure you tighten it every couple of weeks.
Always. I have Schallers on every guitar and strap I own.
The choice is yours.
You can do strap locks with a couple of disc washers from your local hardware
or suppliers like Screwfix. You need a few pence, a screwdriver and the kind of
strap that will go in the case with the guitar (no buckles) because it stays with
the guitar. Jus' sayin'. I've been doing that since long before we had strap
locks.
is Kadence Frontier guitar good?
I bought the beer. It was not Grolsch and didn't have a rubber washer. Out for more beer now.
The Grolsch trick was used by Brian May.
does anyone play PRS EG? don't know what strap lock would fit. I was told that Schaller and Dunlop won't fit, i.e. when you intall the screw will make the hole larger.
Really excited to see you in the next season of Peaky Blinders ;^)
