  • Rehearsal with the Mecklenburgishe Staatskapelle Schwerin recorded in August 1968.
"Although the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin is nobody's idea of a world-class orchestra, under Tennstedt in the First its playing is full of light and clarity and elegance and wit."
So wrote American music critic James Leonard when a rare Tennstedt recording of Beethoven's First Symphony from 1968 was made available thanks to Weitblick.
Hear how incredibly hard Tennstedt works his orchestra in rehearsing just the first movement.
"Durch ununterbrochenen Fleiß erhalten Sie Mozarts Geist aus Haydns Händen" is the 1792 quote from Beethoven's benefactor Count Ferdinand von Waldstein referred to by Tennstedt at the start of the rehearsal.
