    UK knife laws are frustrating. I always keep a Spyderco Bug on my keys, and although, from a legal standpoint, I can carry anything else here without a good reason, I don't. The Bug is so small you can use it in public and people don't notice, but anything larger than that makes me feel uncomfortable, because I know there will be 'Sheeple' (as you usefully describe them) who will still be terrified of a 3" Victorinox. I think being older would help, but being 18, unfortunately I'm the perfect age for everybody to assume that I'm carrying a knife to stab people, not as a useful tool. I have multiple EDC Legal knives, but anything larger than the Bug makes me worried I'll be charged for having it, even though I'm not doing anything wrong. The only reason I carry a Bug is because I hope the police would be reasonable and see that there is no way it could be used as an 'offensive weapon' any more than a spoon could.
    Thanks for the awesome video, interesting to see your opinions on it, as well as some of the opinons in the comments. Keep up the good work!

    i like that you brits continue to embrace knives. i have had interactions with many brits that hated anything pointy, and would consider it a weapon. i apoligize for the americans that are always bragging about guns i personally love them, and own some, but i dont brag about it especially when the people im bragging to can't relate to me on the subject. in fact this is my first comment mentioning i even love guns. i respect that you guys are setting a positive example in the uk about how knives are not as dangerous as people might think.

    As an American, listening to this is sad. How much is enough? when your government starts regulating a sharpened piece of steel so heavily, you might want to make a change. you're not children, you're full grown adults who can think for themselves! "for our safety" really? why is having only non-locking knives safe? wouldn't it be safer to HAVE a lock? food for thought. peace, love your vids.

      The individual details are often a bit stupid like the locking knife rule, but the overall result is pretty good for us. Obviously in America it's a whole different business, but here then so few people have any sort of weapon that self defence is almost irrelevant and we like it that way. If I lived in the US I would definitely carry a gun, but in the UK I don't feel at a disadvantage by having just a pocket multi tool

    I guess these would be fine for citydwellers but none of these knives would cut it (no pun intended) up here in arctic Sweden. I personally would not trust any of these knives to kill a reindeer efficiently (we use sami knives to sever the spinestem in one j-shaped movement, its like turning off a lightbulb, its that fast.) In the kingdom of Denmark knives with holes or knobs to assist singlehand opening is illegal, also blades must be no longer than 2 inches. I am 37 years old and I have yet to see any misuse of knives up here such as stabbing etc, I guess when you are RAISED to be trusted with both knives and firearms you develop a responsible mindset early on. I wish legislators would realize ONE simple truth about violent crimes : blades, guns and other usable items are only TOOLS, violence comes from the heart. Make idiots and assholes illegal instead of simple tools. I have yet to see a gun or knife intentedly attack people or animals on their own, and if they can't do that autonomously it seems stupid to me to label them DANGEROUS. It is in the hands of a synapsically challenged individual they become a danger.
    Backing out of my little rant, I want to congratulate you on starting up a nice collection. Can't you get a permit to collect larger blades, swords and axes? or is that not an interest of yours?

      In general, these are indeed urban use ones, general string cutting, odd jobs in a workshop etc.
      These are the legal carry anywhere (Though you'd probably get in trouble carrying it into a nightclub) knives but other knives like a proper fixed blade survival knife are legal in certain contexts, as are a lot of other knives and even fullsize swords if you have a valid reason for having it in your possession, historical reenactment, plays, hunting and fishing and so on.

    In general, the multitools are always going to look less threatening, and therefore are less likely to be confiscated by the police than full purpose knives, especially something like a leatherman.
    It also depends on context of location, age, clothing and attitude.
    Polite middle aged man in a tweed jacket in a rural area with one of those Buck knives in his breast pocket, used as a letter opener and general use handyman blade isn't very likely to have it taken from him.
    Hoodie up with one of the larger knives (even if it's a legal length non locking one) loose in his trouser pocket walking through rough neighborhoods or into a club will be more likely to be searched, being calm may get you out of it if you explain clearly that it's a tool but being rude would get you nowhere.
    I myself carry a Gerber Multiplier in a belt pouch and a small 2.1" folder in my trouser pocket, I only use my fixed blade survival knife when on camping trips.

    • @robertbones326
      @robertbones326 9 лет назад

      Going into a nightclub with a knife is totally fucked up. The bouncer would take you out if he thought you were a threat. There's never any excuse to have a knife on you at a nightclub, the only reason you've got it is to fucking stab someone.

    The Swiss card knife is classed as fixed blade so they will take it off you and quite possibly fine/imprison you as well . Any fixed blade will get you in a lot of ( stupid unnecessary ridiculous ) bother unless you are a habitual violent criminal in which case you will probably just get " a good talking to " in private whereas a decent law abiding ( apart from the teeny tiny knife ) will be dragged through the courts and publicly vilified as a mass muderer come psychopathic dangerous lunatic . You cant even leave one in the glove box of your car or in a briefcase/bag ( your car is legally classed as a public space ) or even in a toolbox . Just thought I would let you know as I have looked into the law about carrying and even keep a full copy on my mobile phone to show the police why I can carry ( not show or wave or heaven above use to defend myself with , in case of being mugged ) any 3 inch and under (linear length and not counting the curvature of the blade ) folding knife with a non locking blade any where in the country without a good reason ( like you need for a fixed blade ). You only have to want to carry one to be reason enough to have it . Any lawyer or policeman worth his salt knows those stipulations and as long as you show if asked and pass or point to the knife without opening the blade to show them ( He went for me M,lud that's why fifteen of us had to subdue him wiv our truncheons , boots, tasers and tear gas , honest Guv,nor ) then you have the law on your side and not biased toward the bobbys for a change .You can find the relevant laws on the governments website and its well worth reading and keeping a copy on your phones if you want to carry a pocket knife .Just remember to be polite and sound knowledgeable about the relevant sections of the law and you wont have any problems with you average policeman .Most of the ones I know dont mind responsible people owning knives or carrying them as they know they are just a tool .

      @Robdc89 8 лет назад

      The blade on a Swiss card isn't really the same as a knife its mostly supposed to be used as a letter opener not for actual use as a tool for cutting or for violence also i just found out the length from blade tip to the edge of the handle is less then 1.5 inches

    Brit Spyderco fan here. I'm particularly fond of the all-steel ones. I've usually got a Grasshopper on me, though I would be wary of using it in clear public view due to its non-traditional appearance and hence maybe causing problems for myself. I occasionally swap it out for something a bit more 'Grandad' for this reason.

    the problem with rusting isn't necessarily the blade steel it's mainly the bead blast finish… my kershaw chill rusted on me within a day but since i've polished it i have no rust issues anymore (and the knife looks much better ;D)

    In response to the Boker Trance 42, I have owned one for almost 4 years and it has never had any signs of rust. I keep it to a high polish and razor sharp, although I have left it for over a year at one point and it just required a little touch up. Aside from the pocket clip, it's probably the best UK penknife out there, although I carry a spiderco drop point due to it's weight (or lack of).

Regarding what you mentioned about crime, i agree. from what I know those who commit knife crime are uneducated and will use whatever is readily available and cheap. Those of us who spend £100+ on knives are usually the responsible members of society, not that the police agree

    just a heads up, the swisscard does count as a fixed blade (the card is pretty much a sheath in the eyes of the law) depends on the mood of the copper if caught with one, but it generally goes as long as your not waving it about like a nutter or carrying somewhere you shouldnt be, you might be ok.
    sorry if this has been said before but id say add it to the description! good vid man
    also a note about lockers/fixed. if you have good reason to carry you can. for instance its fine for me to take a 4 inch fixed blade, locker etc with me when I go camping (as well as a tomahawk) the law says its ok if you have good reason.

    Nice informative vid. I myself wouldn't carry the Spydies or the Bokers, I've heard too many stories of those being confiscated. UInfortunately I recently lost one of my favourites, a Kiwi, and yes, I did swear (a lot) lol. But the main one I take out with me is a Rough Rder Stockman. Basically, it does everything I need it to, and if it gets lost or something, it's nice and cheap to replace. And of course, it was that sort of thing they were thinking of when they made those laws.

    just watched your squeak review and I agree the size is more cute than anything, I already have a tenacious, ambitious, endura and military so Im already some what addicted despite only being 17. Although understandable i really dislike sheeple.. They see a knife and think serial killer rather than someone who just carries a useful tool. Anyway, love the vids friend! sub'd

    Commin over in June and particularly seeing the attacks on citizens by Moslems I will be feelin kinda nekkid, I live in an area of Texas where, due to the lax border control of O'bama, we have a very real threat of Mexican Cartel situations. Most of us, particularly ex military don't want to be a victim of that. Daily I always carry 2 Buck 181 Oddyssey knives [always backup], My conceal/carry weapon is a Springfield DS .45 and I always carry a "tactical" pen. In the car console mounted Glock 21 with second mag of 27 rounds in the console. Colt AR-15 in the trunk [boot]. I feel save [smiling]. That's been my MO for over 10 years and interestingly I have not shot up any schools or shopping malls, slit any throats nor cracked any skulls with the tactical pen. OK, thats where I' commin from. Liked your video alot. My self defense choices for my trip are #1 stay in the gym and #2 a SOG Slipzilla and a less aggressive looking tactical pen. Thanks for your help.

      Doesn't matter if you carry or not, when those two extremist nutters killed soldier Lee Rigby they were so brave they had to run him down in car first before they hacked him up. He didn't see it coming so even if he had an AK over his shoulder it would have been useless.

    The Boker Plus XS @7:00 is listed as having a 7.9cm blade on some sites which is not legal, Boker's own site says 7.62cm which is bang on legal but then why does everyone else get it wrong? If it's legal i will buy it.

    All I'm really looking for is a blade, maybe also a small blade. A bottle opener or "cap lifter". So I was thinking about the Bantam, or maybe the Recruit as it's only a quid more.
    But on Heinnie.com neither of these have the UK legal thing on the picture of them, whereas a lot of the other knives do. so I was wondering if for some reason those 2 actually aren't?

    Another great video and high caliber of comments. So if I understand correctly the knife blade from tip to handle could be say 3.5 " and the cutting edge 3'' on a folder and be legal? Or the knife blade from tip to handle could be say 3.5'' and the cutting edge must be less than 3'', more Like 2.756 inches say to be legal ? Sorry to be a pain but I m hopeing for a locals understanding on this 8-)) I m trying to put together your responses to sam pontin and Carsten Heunecke (PART 1). Ah Knives...

    As a Scottish person where we have a massive amount of knife relate crime. Don’t know why anyone other a carpenter, workman, etc would need a knife of any kind, even the smallest knife can kill! Yes only stupid people go out to cause harm with them but accidents happen judgements in the heat of the moment. Even in self defence killing someone is still killing someone. My own opinion is ban them all unless it’s for work that way no one can cause harm to anyone criminals or non criminals

      ***** Curious, then Boker has "UK versions" just like Spyderco? In France locking folders are considered into the 6 class restricted guns but in Spain as long as the blades are shorter than 11 milimeters they are legal to carry ("unless you're in a public place", lol, any street is public, isn't?) Legislators are all stupid, everywhere...

    • @Sup3rSaiy3n
      @Sup3rSaiy3n  10 лет назад

      newhuskytwenty Yes you're right there are a few Böker's that have disengaged locks for the UK market. We need all the variety we can get here. My video shows nearly all options available! I have never really dived into Spanish or French knife law so thanks for the info. Blade shorter than 11mm, so 1.1 cm? That's very short and harsh and agree with your view.

    Other than our second amendment here in the US,knife laws appear similar. Still,it seems like even if you study martial arts for self defense your government wants to make out giving yourself any ability to protect yourself as like an intent to hurt others from the way it sounds based on these comments that I've read below. None of it makes any sense to me,whatsoever. Do our leaders just want to leave the violent offenders with having the only advantage in which if the victim is able to fight back or resist being a victim through any means of physical force then the victim is just as bad,if not worse than the initial criminal that attacks them? The insanity and foolishness of these morons are beyond me. Sigh...

    0:40 That's what political correctness will do for you. Self policing and scared to say what you think. 1:10 The law is clearly not on your side. You can't have or say what you want. 2:00 Let's not offend anyone? Like who? Let me remind you that everyone has guns and knives. The criminals, the Police, the Military, and anyone that might invade. No guarantee that any of these folks will be your friend. Only the good guys it seems are regulated. 5:00 Sheeple. The proper definition is people kicked around by their government. They allow their basic rights to be curtailed. They forget that in a democracy they are the boss. They have no spine. They roll over. They believe any crap they are told. Sheeple. The only way to deal with crime is not to deprive the people of their rights but to put more policemen on the streets, have more realistic sentencing laws and build more prisons. Things that the UK simply won't do. As a consequence, 'You The People' will continue to suffer. 5:24 Deploy it nice and slowly. See what I mean about being self policing. Otherwise known as brainwashed. Think about it.
    I suggest you join a shooters rights association, (or start one) lobby Parliament and get the laws changed in your favor. Let me remind you of what Thomas Jefferson said, "When the people fear the Government, there is tyranny. When the Government fears the people, there is liberty". Aside from that kid, very nice review.

      +David Curtis Watts A hundred years ago I couldn't have voted, but now I can. Our democracy isn't run by corporations and that's why the Greens and UKIP have had such a say on the political landscape in the UK.

      Kameroni The reason we're having a referendum is because of UKIP and the green policies we have now stem from the rise of the Green party in the 90's. I agree it's not a perfect system but it's a lot better than the American system which was my point originally, but you seem to have missed that bit.

    Carrying the knife for hunting is a of good reason for carrying a knife. Any policeman you encounter while out hunting will understand that, if you genuinely have permission to hunt on that ground. What makes that knife illegal in that scenario is using it in an offensive way. If you are that scared of being arrested, keep the knife in your bag and only have it out when dressing your game. If you are compliant with all other laws in that situation then it is astronomically unlikely that a policeman will say "I don't believe that that person carrying an air rifle and dressed in realtree is really going hunting, I'm going to stop and search him!", and if he did the courts would throw the charge out if you had any evidence that you were going hunting!
