    Wise advice from a young man, I am 72 years of age. Started recording, back in the late 60’s…..Love recording, loved the idea of hearing what we had written on tape,,,,and pressed to record eventually.Purchased a Tascam 388 back mid 80’s. wrote a few radio commercials….Still get that machine out from time to time, just like the sound….mastered to Pioneer 150 two track at 15ips…….Didgital came along , and I like it, with its learning curve………Been with logic and Mixbus 32 c now for a few years………..Am I going anywhere,,,,,no, ,,Do I care,,,,No…….Just content being in this music worl.

    Great Video, Glad you said it! "NO ONE CARES" And if you love what your doing then awesome!! It's only a SMALL percentage of folks who will ever get the chance to do music as a profession. Thank you for the video it did help to refocus me on what I love. My goal is to write and create something that will last forever. And the coolest thing to me is when we write lyrics and music and arrangements for that song and we spend hours on production, Perfecting that song. We have done what a lot of people can't do. We have created something out of thin air that didn't exist before. That concept is very cool to me at least. Keep creating people. Do it for the love of doing it. And remember Who Cares that "No one Cares".

    Well said! Music composition/performance has been my entire life since the age of 4 and I turned 50 last year. I'm semi-pro, but to me it's a lifestyle rather than a career. I hold a part time restaurant night job and have been line cooking for about 35 years. My one room studio flat is my actual music studio and I'm loving life for my situation. One question I ask you about your video is about the soft music in the back ground, curious if you wrote/produced it yourself. It's pretty cool and effectively lulled me into the dialogue.

    I’m fortunate enough to make my living through music. Songwriting, production, engineering, live performance, teaching, djing and all other bits and bobs. But I gave up giving a crap how many folk listen to my original music a long, long time ago. I make it for myself, family, friends and a small group of “fans” around the world. If my music makes me happy, that’s all I care about.

    Hard agree on all of these! I've actually said many of these things to myself over the years. I love music: playing it, writing it, listening to it, making and producing it. The enjoyment is its own reward. I get it! I'm almost constantly talking myself off a musical cliff when it comes to production. But then realize how low-fi some of the recordings of the music I love and admire most actually are. And also remind myself about Billy Eilish! I'm an old punk, and I can still recall (OTTOMH) on the back of Nirvana's debut, Bleach, declaring proudly, "Recorded for $600 by Jack Endino". And I'm pretty sure John Lennon's Give Peace a Chance was recorded on a cassette player. A great song is a great song, no matter.

    Well said. It's all about the process and the fullfilment in the satisfaction you get from expressing yourself and recording your own original music. We should all be so lucky to be able to record in our bedrooms at such high quality. Remember this was not possible back in the day like the 60's or 70's or even the 80's (tascam 4-tracks were just coming onto the scene in the 80's). Maybe a hand held cassette recorder, but you had to rent time out at a studio to do a demo.

    Point number 2: I used to be a jazz fusion snob who only listened to allan holdsworth and jean luc ponty. i frowned on pop music as trite. then i got into EDM, and realized that paradigm was wrong. It's okay to make music that you think will appeal to a broad swath of people, as long as you first like it YOURSELF.

    Your video is the truth. Take it from me. I have been a professional recording and mixing engineer for over 3 decades and it does not matter to any listener, they simply don’t know the difference. All that matters is the feel and the emotions they get from a song or any artistic creations. For us as audio engineers it’s really a case of (in my opinion) “just because we can and want to” All these “tools” are really just like “toys” in a sense. We love what we do and it’s simply that. But you are right, it is the final product that really matters. Put a great Musican Producer or Composer in small home set up (in today’s standards) and they do wonders but put someone with that knowledge of creativity in a million dollar studio “nothing happens” I am from Jamaica and some of the greatest Reggae songs where recorded on 4tracks or 8tracks with minimal gear and untreated rooms. Music is a feel, it can be even considered as spiritual too. Great video and I hope your video will inspire others not to focus on the gear but on their work. Use what we have. 👍🏾👍🏾🙏🏽 Blessings

    You made some good points! Even when it comes to mixing... most people dont care. A decent mix satisfies 99% of all listeners. One thing that drives me nuts is that many non-musicians thinks that professional=good, and amateur=average. As you said its just about the amount of income. I wonder if they think music is like sport? If you are really good, then you can make many and be a proffesional. When I try to explain that well... for every David Guetta there are 10 000 people as good, or better than him, that cant make a living of it, then people just dont believe me. 😳 Its very interesting. And weird.

    Chris, How do I apply sound treatment to my home bedroom studio?

  • @jimmythebold589
    @jimmythebold589 7 месяцев назад

    I think it's important to see the shortcomings of any musician that you revere and emulate. IT took me years to understand that allan holdsworth had some serious shortcomings as a musician, especially when he played live. I was in awe of his gorgeous tone, the best, to be sure, and his wild chord voicings. But i recently realized that his lack of theme, repetition, motif and melodic variation was a serious shortcoming. he also hated drum grooves, so most of his drummers sound like they're in outer space. But i worshiped him for many years, until i met him, and he was so humble i stopped doing that. I got out of the fusion thing and into pop, dance and DnB music, which require you to put away your musician 'ears'.

    I've never owned any apple gear. But I am a freelance windows computer repairman. From what i understand; there is less troubleshooting and headache with the IOS platform. God knows I used to spend a lot of time troubleshooting windows problems, until version 7 rolled around, and it seemed pretty stable since then. THe problems with daw and software for music will, however, be universal.

      Welcome! So the only Drum Samples I know of within Studio One are in the VST called “Impact” there is a “Thuddy” preset that is the most realistic sounding samples they have. If you’re looking for a good VST I would try EZ Drummer. I’ve used it for years and eventually upgraded to Superior Drummer. For comparisons sake the EZ Drummer program is roughly 10gb compared to Superior’s 100gb library.. they both have preset music drum patterns but nothing like the auto drummer that you’re referring to.
      I have gotten to a place in life I’m happy to just record the drums in real life 😅 I don’t own any electric kits but I did have the Roland drum pad that was fun to play with.

I also have the Presonus Audiobox 96 interface which doesn't have USB input. I want to record piano input onto a track of a SO6 song much as I would for guitar but with direct input, not via a mike. Any thoughts?

    • @heychrisgreen

      It looks like that Piano has a headphone port so you could use a TRS to TS cable perhaps? Not sure if you need 1/8 or 1/4 for the piano but it should split to 2 separate TS 1/4 cables so you’d be recording the Piano as a Stereo Audio Track in S1. If the headphone jack is 1/4 you can just use a Guitar Cable to test

    I agree that equipment is not everything, but it can be part of the equation that makes a good sound. People are not going to be able to articulate why they like or don't like a sound. Even me, as an audiophile would go to dances and leave early because I could not 'get into it'. Only much latter did I realize that the dance hall had mirrors all around and the reflections made the music sound like mud. Very few are going to be able to articulate why they like or don't like a sound. There is one piano VST of a C7 that I absolutely love for its stunning resolution and pristine clarity. It turns out that the engineer at Production Voices used very high end (Neumann) recording microphones along with other high end equipment and it shows.

    • @heychrisgreen
      @heychrisgreen  7 месяцев назад +2

      I agree!! I absolutely love the Neumann microphone I have but I would say that my perspective years ago was that the expensive stuff would automatically make my songs awesome 😅 Kind of like a painter thinking that having a nicer brush will produce better art! There’s definitely a better sound to it, but I’ve tried to see them as tools I still have to practice with and learn how to use them. Before I was more like “My vocals sound rubbish because I don’t have a Neve 1073!” And that’s what I believe was making me frustrated.. thanks for sharing!

    Enlighten: Music should ‘open doors & windows’ in people’s hearts, minds, and spirits.

    key takeaways from being a musician these days -- avoid materialism if something sounds good, believe in yourself once you learn the basics of modern recording, the Internet is a beauty pageant and a pay-to-play scheme...keep calm and play on 😎✌️

      Using what you have instead of obsessing over what you don’t have can be very fulfilling!

      @@heychrisgreen decent gear, recorded well is just as good as the "pro" gear that popular and sponsored accounts are given!!! after getting a Presonus interface, I wish I'd gotten their DAW...but FL Studio works for demos and such

    Thanks for the good tips but the sad truth is that you had to make this video at all. As an older musician I've seen it all. I started with an elementary school friend just wanting to learn Beatle songs. The goal back then was to play well enough to fit in with others in a band situation. No one thought of being an engineer, manager, sound/lighting tech, promoter, publisher, distributor, merch salesperson and on and on. We have become so singular as musicians as not to depend on others, when we really do need each other. So sad.

    My wife and I make music to glorify God. It's fun and it doesn't matter if people like it or see it. Win-Win situation.

      Not really 🤔 The first 2 albums my wife and I recorded were through Distrokid.. we had it on iTunes and Amazon for a while but didn’t renew after a couple of years. Definitely wasn’t a money maker 😂 Had hundreds of cds and booklets made that ended up in the garage. Did a few local events and sold some. We’ve uploaded several of the songs I’m sure you can find randomly around the internet 😅 That early stuff was fun but we had no plan. My RUclips Channel here has hundreds of videos all about recording songs at home

    Bro I don’t agree with that you can’t earn money with the music. In the long run every musician sees from the business perspective as well.

      🤔 I didn’t say you can’t make money in music, I just said it’s rare.. most creative people struggle to turn investments into profits. Not trying to discourage people from trying, but it doesn’t come without a lot of hustle
