How to ANALYZE & EQ Any Room | Step by Step Tutorial
Hey Chris, for the Limiter Pro or Artist … are either of these included in the Studio One Pro 7 series? Otherwise do you have a link to the ones you use?
Great tutorial. Very clear. The vid helped me accurately understand quantizing audio vocal tracks. Back up vocals rarely are perfectly in time with the main vocals. This understanding helps me so much in that I will not have to make the vocalist track over and over to get it right.
Why not use the button in the left bottom corner of the takes, there you can select the different takes right away... one click less ;)
Agree.
….because I’m a dinosaur 😂
what if i don't remember the purchase date?
I don’t think they’re much of a stickler about the date so I would just give your best guess
Man, do I ever need to employ this!!! Instead of start, stop, delete, reset, start, stop, delete, reset, start...well, you get the picture...I can do this and be more focused on the performance! Thanks!
Happy to help! 🙏😁
great advice as always
Thank you! 😁
Thanks nice tutorial. How do we delete the other tracks
Great question! Try right clicking your track and select “Expand Layers” you can then delete your takes individually.. If I’m looking to save space on my session I will just use the “Remove Unused Files” option at the top menu where it says “Song” Not at a computer at the moment but I think that’s it 😅 Thanks for watching!
I did not know about the ending on the loop, that I could drag it longer. That will come in handy.
Hope you got some value from this video! 😁 For more check out this Studio One Tips & Tutorials Video Playlist ⬇️ ruclips.net/p/PLAN12c6eXaW4-w7b7Aw_s5rarrWMK77uU
What you have flatted it's actually the overall system response when it is made of: PA, acoustic venue, RTA microphone, but the RTA mic will surely not be used in event. So when you will use real microphones, they will introduce coloration, altering the source, and the overall system response will be different, and you will have to adjust the PA again. So the best method is to neutralize the system already with the most important microphone used in the event, placed exactly where it should be.
Hi Chris, been folowing you for while now, love everything you do. somehow i missed this video and am trying to find the link to the stems but i cant find. Any chance i i could still get it? would love to practise. thanks
I want to create a video with myself playing a song that would have alto, tenor, and baritone sax parts. Also, video of me when I'm playing. I'm assuming Presonus is music only. I have imovie, quicktime, and garageband. Garageband has a metronome, but I don't believe I can record video simultaneous to the sound in garageband. I see many videos on YT like I want to make. Not sure what software is being used for these videos. I have a microphone, audio interface, etc. Any recommendations on software? Thanks!
You’ll need to record the audio and video at the same time.. I would recommend running GarageBand with your audio interface.. then you’ll load the video footage into iMovie. You’ll have to trim off any outtakes and layer your videos together.. I believe iMovie can crop your videos so you can arrange them into one screen… when your video is done you can drop your mixed audio track and mute the camera audio for a better sound.. this is a complicated video to make but common enough there’s probably some dedicated tutorials on RUclips
You would be a lot better sending the LR buss to a matrix and attenuating with the matrix bus and use the matrix for your system tuning and save the main eg for taste.
Question. If one user has studio 7 and another has studio 6, will those projects play on either version if they are shared between the users? Like will a project made in 7 be able to play on 6? Let me know!
In fact, the Studio One (7 already) still has problems with delay compensation if there are any plugins in your mix. Even with this Z. Even w/o monitoring. So now, for example, I record guitar with absolutely clean channels in mix and only then add inserts. Although it would seem that the program has a mechanism for tracking the amount of delay in project.
What is your opinion on Duo v. Quad of the Apollo Twin X? How do you plug MIDI ports into the interface? Currently, I have the 5-point MIDI cables, would I need something else? Thank you so much!
I agree about the snare samples or possibly midi. I think the Chili Peppers use the same method. Modern drum mixing uses a lot of samples but compare those bands with Kings of Leon "Use Somebody" for example. Not nearly as clean of a drum mix.
I have the same mission!
Thank you so much! Very helpful video!! Very much appreciated!!
Thanks for watching!
please help. why mine when im bouncing my tracks from stereo to mono. the bounces track still in stereo? please reply thank you
If you’re doing a “Bounce Track In Place” then it will default to what type of track you’re bouncing.. you could use the “Export Mixdown” function found in the “Song” tab at the top of your screen in the menu. I believe there’s an option to export mono.. also if you’re on a stereo track, look for a small icon near your track’s name and record enable buttons. The icon for stereo looks like “oo” and if you click it, it will switch to mono “o” Not at my computer but hope that helps for now!
Awesome video!
I don’t use these like I should. Definitely will now
For those mostly recording audio; Reaper. Runs on most anything. Stable which is gold when recording/mixing. Almost never brings a machine down. Small download foot print - isn't filled with instruments/plugs or other bloat that most charge you for and much of it, you'll never use. For those who say it's hard to use. No. Only if you make it so. After all these years, I still use it in it's default settings. I was up and running in about fifteen minutes first time. Make a track, tell it where to save and hit record. Only change? Increasing auto-save frequency. Want to customize it? The sky is the limit. I see it as a digital mulitrack tape recorder with infinite flexibility. And yes, help online along with free plugs/scripts is massive.
@ChrisGreen I thought the Fabric VST was only exclusive to the MPC software?
I’m not so sure 🤔 I’ve never owned an MPC but the MPC Collection installed on my laptop just like other third party plugins 🤷♂️ Most of their VSTs have a free trial you might want to try.. here’s a link to their main page: www.airmusictech.com/virtual-instruments/mpc-instruments-collection/
Very impressed with the OPX4 as well as the bundle. If you’re looking for an all in one solution for virtual instruments I think the MPC collection is worth a gander! 😁🎹
I use Ableton and Cubase, Ableton is great for getting ideas down quick, Cubase for getting really into depth - and about the price, Steinberg each year has a sale where you can get Cubase usually for 60% of the original price. Cubase and Reaper are the two most powerful DAWs, it really comes down to personal taste - about the price, Cubase includes some really nice Vstis, Reaper doesnt, so one has to keep that in mind
insane price for us who have the pro version already.... should be max $100 upgrade.... we payed hundreds already.
just an opinion, but to truly measure their relative accuracy you should hook up a tone generator and amplifier. This will create a consistent sound pressure at a given frequency and power. Then one should measure it with the db meter to get the, theoretically, accurate db rating for the given settings, and then do the same with the iPhone. By varying the frequencies and volumes at set intervals one could plot out a far more accurate graph of both devices and their differences. One thing to remember is that db is an exponential scale, so if the relative difference remains consistent then it would imply one of the devices is just miscalibrated for it's base; however, if one of the difference grows as the volumes get louder then the results would be in accurate. As for the frequencies, the reason measuring those is important is that the mics will likely have difference frequency ranges, and if one of the devices starts to fall off at the low or high end then that is important information to know, because without it one could be playing the upper and lower frequency extremes louder than expected which could potentially damage the listeners ears if it's not known about. If one really wanted to take the tests up a notch then get various noise generators that can produce white, pink, brown/red, green and if one really wants to go crazy blue and violet. once all tests are done and the two graphs made then that would be a more useful result than watching two db meters of unknown quality bounce up and down like old VU meters. ;)
I think I prefer the Shure here, it has deeper bass and a better balance. With the mandolin, I noticed the Neuman cuts some of the highs off but the highs sound close on the guitar.
You should ring out the harmonics that cause major reverb(playback a notch of a single freq sweep). and you don't need a special mic to EQ. simply play pink noise on left channel and compare its loudness against a single hz band on the right channel, continue with all bands. Your ears will perfectly EQ balance the speakers.
Hey :) it helped a lot to understand. Thank you from Czech Republic😉
Great info!! Thank you!!
Just picked up this timer today. Excited to give it a go and always be in tune again. My sharks just went cutting it anymore. I’d tune and still be out of tune when the shark said I was in tune. That’s when I knew I needed the Peterson strobo stomp.
I love you… for the past 3 hours I’ve been trying to figure this out. Countless videos, guides, FAQs and Reddit posts yet no fix to my problem until I came across you. Thank you so much.
That’s great! Love it when I find a video that gets me out of a pickle. Glad you enjoyed the video! 🙏
I tossed a SE DM-1 inline on my 57 it’s so clean now
Can you send a link to moving blankets like in your room? :)
Pretty informative video Chris. Thanks I appreciate it truly. I am looking for the real, good info.
For a crossed reverb I use the track utility that allows you to swap L an R. Put it in an fx channel with no Fx and then route this to an existing reverb fx channel. Now you have a crossed reverb using just a single, maybe already present, reverb plugin.
Thanks for the tip! 😁
Thx for the ideas. I'm taking my small set up into the technician where I bought everything to see if they can ID the issue
Great tutorial video, Chris and nice song. I learned a lot. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching 😁
Thanks for the vid. I cant figure out wtf is causing my low volume. Im using the Audiobox 96 with cloudlifter and the recirding is about 1/4 the volume. When i apply gain to it, it screams with hissing...im sure its a setting, but this has been a big dissapointment so far.
Hmm 🤔 On the Audiobox do you frequently adjust the Mixer knob? When you are done recording make sure it’s all the way on the playback setting so you’ll hear 100% of what the computer is spitting out.. also noise could be many issues.. if your interface is near any transformers or power cables it can have a lot of interference.. the headphone amp on the Audiobox is also not the best quality so I am curious if you export your recorded tracks and play them in your car system do you still hear the noise? 🤔 If the Audiobox, cables, sm7, and cloudlifter are in a normal condition you should definitely not be having noise issues.. sorry for the headache but hopefully that gives you a few ideas to check
Bro, tune your reso on the snare to about 400hz. Then tune the top to whatever note you like. Your Snare is the only exception on the fifth/4th/equal rule. This will cause your snares to respond correctly, and keep your other drums from resonating your snare.
I’ll give it a try! 😁
Awesome video learning studio one as I go
You’ll do great! 😁 Thanks for watching and good luck
I hope this helps! Check out the SM81 if you’re looking for a great small diaphragm condenser mic: amzn.to/3C1z671 (Amazon Affiliate Link)
Superb work dear
Thank you! 😁
Yeah but what's the need for a MUSIC bus if you have a MIX bus to the main. Why not just a mix bus?
I will send every track except for the vocal tracks to a Music bus so I can make adjustments to the instruments without messing up the vocals.. usually just a fader move but you can also compress the music bus so the vocal sits on top more easily.. hope that makes sense 😅 not 100% necessary but it’s handy when you need it
@@heychrisgreen oh yeah that does make sense... so that separates the vocals more from the instruments. I'm making templates for final mixes and want to do it right. I watch a lot of videos and everyone does it a little different. Thanks for your response.
The problem with this approach is that the measuring device is time blind. So it can't tell the difference between reflections, coupling, or otherwise. This means that at best, it will tell you only what it hears at that point in space. The second part of the problem is that most issues CANNOT be solved by EQ. You can mask it at that single point in space, but it cannot solve the problem elsewhere. You truly need a time sensitive measuring sytem that can extrapolate, and show where the real issues are. SMAART is sold at its price point for a reason. It can tell you where you are having time related issues, so that you can negate the data. You have to work with truly linear systems for years to be able to hear what a linear system sounds like ( not as good as one would think ). With that experience, you can get away from relying on a SMAART rig, look at an RTA, and weed out reliable bits of data. Most of what you are seeing is bad data, so you have to hear what correlates. Unless you can hear the correlation, you can't fix it with EQ.
You solve biggest issue - listening fatigue. Once you try it, you can't go back
Thank you, I have been forced to teach myself to record and it will be a great investment ! 2025 and beyond WINOT
it would be helpul to know what version you're on, because this video is not useful for my version.
