20 Things to do in Kiev, Ukraine Travel Guide Video Script:
This week we’re showing you around Kiev, Ukraine. This was our first time travelling to the country, so we hardly knew what to expect, though we did have an inkling we’d find churches with onion domes, borsht on every menu, and very cheap prices, but that was it!
Well, we found some of that, but we also discovered a fascinating city with ornate architecture, massive Soviet monuments, a completely new cuisine, more churches and monasteries than we ever thought possible, and friendly people despite the language barrier.
The following is our travel guide to the city. Now let us share with you 20 things to do in Kiev on your next visit!
And that’s a wrap for our visit to Kiev! This was our first time travelling in Ukraine, but we were hooked right from the start.
This destination felt very underrated with few tourists around, yet we were surrounded by beautiful architecture, there were churches galore to visit, the cuisine was hearty and filling, and everything was super affordable.
If you are thinking of travelling to Kiev, we hope this video was able to give you a taste of what it’s like.
If you have any other suggestions of things to do in Kiev, that we may have missed, feel free to share your tips and suggestions with travellers in the comments.
This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food, Ukrainian culture & cuisine.

You forgot to say that Kyiv - is one of the oldest capitals of Europe. When in London and Paris were running wild bears - in Kyiv, built the churches. Kyiv - is a special energy place. A mystical, ancient city with many secrets, both on the surface and under the earth, in endless caves and catacombs... Kyiv - called Orthodox Jerusalem. Kyiv - in the Middle Ages was the most important Slavic city. It was a symbol of power and grandeur. For the throne of Kyiv, as in the Games of Thrones, there was a constant battle between the prince brothers.

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos
Kyiv is actually known as the "Mother of Rus' Cities" (Мать городов русских) in historical texts, it is one of the oldest capital cities in Eastern Europe, the centre of East Slavic culture, trade and commerce after the Rus' people moved their capital from Veliky Novgorod (Великий новгород) south to the Dnieper River in 882 AD, where Kyiv stands today.
Eventually the kingdom of Kievan Rus began to disintegrate as different principalities within the kingdom itself began vying for power. Soon thereafter the Mongols arrived in the 13th century AD and began wreaking havoc on these different principalities. Meanwhile the Mongols also established the kingdom of the Golden Horde and made Moscow the new socio-economic and trading hub of the Rus' people instead, bringing about a population shift away from Kyiv towards the northeast. Nonetheless, Kyiv remained a major spiritual, cultural and religious hub for the Eastern Orthodox faith amongst the Rus' (because Kyiv has many old churches that are much older than the ones in Moscow, including the St. Sophia's Cathedral, Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and the Church of the Tithes which was rebuilt and destroyed multiple times throughout its history, its ruins are not far from St. Andrews' Church). After the Mongol Empire disintegrated, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth occupied much of what is today Ukraine, Belarus and parts of Western Russia starting from the 16th century AD until the 17th century AD, which explains some of the Polish influence on Belarus & Ukraine. Soon after that however, the Grand Duchy of Moscow (and subsequently the Russian Tsardom, Russian Empire) grew in power to challenge the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Kyiv once again changed hands and landed itself in Russian territory for the next few hundred years.
Over time, the Rus' people developed into the Russians, Ukrainians & Belarusians. It is worth noting that many Russians, Ukrainians & Belarusians still revere Kyiv's historical importance today; and in fact I've heard from one of my private tour guides in Kyiv that many Russians used to love to travel to Kyiv for its history, its green and quiet boulevards (compared to Moscow) etc. until the recent Russian-Ukrainian conflict which saw a slump in the number of tourist arrivals from Russia.

i just got back to the US from visiting Kyiv and Poland. I re-watched this video before my trip, and it was very useful, especially the part about the dress code for the caves. I traveled with my son, and we saw most of what you showed here and had a great time! We didn't go to the Chernobyl museum, but we did do the actual tour to Chernobyl itself! Wow! Also another thing we did not listed here was go to the corruption museum north of Kyiv. The opulence of the estate built by money stolen from the Ukranian people really made you think about the 2014 revolution.

Did you also know, that: every kyiv underground metro station has at least 2 hermetic doors which can be raised during a cataclysm. As a result, an perfectly deep underground sealed city is formed connected with a series of tunnels. Also every second station has a supply of water, food and basic survival stuff like clothes, medical supplies etc.

Thank you for sharing such amazing and informative video. You really pointed out all the main attractions. But, for sure there are so much more to explore, and it would be impossible to show everything in one video.
As it was said in comments Kyiv is an old city and has very rich history. It can be seen though attractions. And this is what impresses the most - you can see and feel kinda different cities all in one.
For example, the whole another Kyiv can be found in this district in the center called Lypky. It was a rich neighborhood in the end of 19th century. During the Soviet times houses very nationalized. But now those mansions are available for us to observe and some are even open for visits, like Chocolate House. What’s more is that every house has its story and brings the spirit of those times.
If you’ll ever come to Kyiv again and will want to see what else the city has to offer, let me know, I’ll be glad to show you hidden attractions. I’m a city guide and would love to tell you all about it.
By the way the best month for Kyiv is May. ;)

    Hey, thanks for the video.
Next time you'll be in Kiev you can visit "Botanical Garden Grishko", "Expo Center of Ukraine", "Feofaniya Park", "Museum of Folk Architecture - Pyrohiv" - those are very nice places for a walk too, especially between May and September.
You can also walk between metro station Arsenalna down to the FC Dynamo Kiev stadium through the Mariinskyi Park and Mariyinsky Palace, and afterwards going to the Rainbow Arch passing the Park Bridge.

Very appreciable video! Thumbs up! Just keep in mind that there are plenty museums at The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and from some of them you'll get a greater joy than from churches themselves. Visiting a lot of those is boring at a time. As a ukrainian myself knowing a bit of history I found that going to many churches and cathedrals isn't get much excitement but when I visited Mykola Siadrystyi Micro Art Museum I was stunned. There's a lot to look at. Take for instance a shod flea or an Ernest Hemingway portrayal carved out on a pear kernel's slice and many more. All handmade, pretty amazing. Thank You Guys!

Oh gosh! I thought I was the only one person who was confused by the map and had to climb the mountain near the metro station Dnipro (Дніпро)! It was an experience to never forget and a real challenge of my courage.:) Just imagine - it happened some days ago, and the ground was completely snowed and partly ice-crusted. And I am climbing the mountain through the forest doubting that there will ever be an end of it...:)) Anyway, I am back to Belarus and your video is a tasty cure for my nostalgia! Thank you!

One of the places you've missed is Friendship of Nations Arch - excellent views of the Dnipro.
In Kiev there also is a beautiful embankment on Minska station with great renewed park called "Natalka" and right behind that park we also have kind of mini park "Garden of stones" and do have church, yeah another one :)
And how could you leave without tasting the Kiev cake it's being produced since 1956 and it is one of the most famous desserts in our country! You should definetly try it next time! Thank you for a great video, I am so proud you have visited my country!
