I've been binge-watching many different reaction videos to Minus One lately and the major lack of people not knowing what "black rain" (nuclear fallout) is, kind of astounds me considering Godzilla himself is a nuclear allegory.
After the nuclear reaction occurred, rain fell due to the heat of 1000 degrees Celsius, and because this rain contained radioactive material, many of those who were exposed to it lost their hair and teeth, and suffered from leukemia, cancer, and other diseases for decades.

Godzilla is an analogy for Nuclear Weapons. You can't really kill him similar to how you can't stop a hurricane or a volcano. While you can stop him, he'll just come back with more devastation then the last.
I feel like Godzilla is supposed to represent as a living natural disaster. If Godzilla eats people, it would seem like he's no different than an oversized animal.
using a decompression sickness as a weapon to at least hurt godzilla was the smartest thing i noticed. while the sudden crushing depths are usually hard on many things, decompression can be as deadly. you can start to see tissue damage at 1:18:21
If you were a Kamikaze Pilot who came back alive, some people thought of you as a coward. At the same time, there were also people in Japan who did not agree with the whole "die for your country" idea. Many of them wanted to live, and believed suicide was a waste of life, even if it involved defending your country. Shikashika suffered from PTSD throughout most of this movie, Godzilla was meant to represent that.
The plane was real. "Shinden" was actually designed for the prototype of next gen jet fighter at the end of WWII. And the battlle ships were also actually being operated during the wartime.
Two J7W Shindens were built, one survives today in that huge aviation museum near Washington DC. The one in the film is an insanely detailed 1:1 replica, funded by an aviation museum in Japan where it was put on display after filming. As for the ships, yep, every single named ship were among the few to survive the war in reality: cruiser Takao, destroyers Yukikaze, Hibiki, Yuukaze, and Keyaki, frigate Ikuno, and minelayer Katashima, along with some unnamed No.13-class subchasers. We also see Chi-To tanks defending Tokyo, which like the Shinden were a late-war project which never got to see combat.
45:48 I really loved the charge up of Godzilla's atomic breath. It was super cool that his spines glow and rise up as he charged up and how the spines immediately press down when he unleashed the full might of the atomic breath
It's been a long time since I've seen a movie this universally loved, and it's absolutely deserved. This is a masterpiece, and that oscar was well earned.
It's funny when about a half of the movies y'all make a lot of jokes, but when y'all realize how much damage and victims from that atomic blast y'all suddenly became so serious🤣
@meme too. Missed on the color film. Seen the black & white in theaters only because I heard it was for one week only. Found out when it pop up on my phone!go73
I'm Japanese and I'm not good at English, but after watching your video I learned that the Americans who used nuclear bombs are the most ignorant people in the world about nuclear weapons. Shikishima was exposed to black rain due to the huge explosion caused by the beam of light released by Godzilla. Because black rain contains large amounts of radioactivity, people who are directly exposed to this rain suffer from acute radiation injuries such as hair loss, heavy bleeding from the gums, bloody stools, and massive hematemesis caused by acute leukemia. Noriko was infected with Godzilla cells, but Shikishima's life was also in danger. Godzilla killed 30,000 people, but this number is likely to be much higher. That's what this story is about.
I am also Japanese. Probably most people on Earth don't know much about nuclear bombs. Since our country is the only country on Earth that has been bombed, Japanese people know more about nuclear bombs. So I think it's inevitable that Americans don't know much about nuclear bombs. Besides, these youtubers were not the ones who invented or dropped the nuclear bomb. Their ignorance may be inevitable. But I'm sure there are Americans who know a lot about nuclear bombs. And what we Japanese can do is share that knowledge accurately. If that's the case, I think it's better to avoid looking down on the ignorance of others. I believe that discussing and sharing knowledge in this way is good for both sides. That's all I wanted to say.
@@ygnyl447I appreciate you. I became very aware of the dangers of atomic bombs after the very first Godzilla movie. Of course, as a child, I just liked the cool monster. As an adult I have a much deeper understanding of the meaning behind Godzilla. Did you know that Godzilla was originally inspired due to a Japanese fishing boat called the Lucky Dragon Number 5 drifting too close to an H bomb testing site which exposed all the fishermen to radiation poisoning?
@@muscledoggs566 When I was a student, I read about the ship in a textbook, but I didn't know that it had influenced Godzilla in the movie. Thanks for telling me. I'll google about the ship later. I don't think they are laughing at what's happening on the screen. They are buddies. They are laughing at each others reactions . That's what these reactions posts are about. This plane never had an ejection seat in those days, not until the jet aircraft showed up was one necessary the mechanic created a working seat to maybe save his friend. The main reason the cost for production was so low was that most of what you are seeing is practical effects: model ships, buildings, water pools, film overlay, rear art projection, etc. This is why it is so mind blowing. The nuclear explosions were scarier than in Oppenheimer!
Hey Guys, that's Godzilla's atomic breath! Also, many might not know is that Godzilla was seen as symbolic of the atomic bombs that the US dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in August 1945 in WWII.
Their first meeting. The Noriko (girl with the baby) lost her parents during the bombing in Japan. She found the baby Akiko from a dying mother who asked Noriko to raise her. Their first meeting was that Noriko might have been caught stealing food for herself and the baby (becuz obviously, Japan lost a lot and ppl are scurrying and stealing for survival). She doesnt know Shikishima but gave him the baby so she can escape her chase and come back for the baby. She escaped her chase and was waiting for shikishima to move so she could come back for the baby and of course ended up living with him.
45:57 like the name of the thing "atomic breath" says: it takes energy from the tens of thousands of nuclear bombs that humanity has launched against the planet and concentrates the radiation into a single beam of pure radiation
This thing has won a lot of big awards and deserves it. Japan really showed us (US) how to do GODZILLA! Terrifying!!!!!!! My buddy and I were 12 years old again; all we could do was look back and fourth at each other , nodding with shit eating grins! We are putting out trash costing 300 million bucks and they did this on a budget of 54 million. This is a total remake of the original first film from the original studio. Even the music is the original! I love these guys!
It is referred to as the "black rain" (48:55), representing the highly radioactive rain that claimed many lives in Hiroshima for decades after the atomic bombing. For more information, refer to "Black Rain" (1989), directed by Ridley Scott, or "Black Rain" (1989), directed by Shohei Imamura.
For a movie thats very dark and somber in tone, with only a few scenes of subtle humor, i heard a whole lotta laughing and gigglying going on...even during very serious scenes. I know to most casual audiences that a lot of Godzilla films have been labeled as campy or for kids and "geeks", but this film harkened back to the 54' original in that it dealt with the residual effects of post WWII Japan. I woulda thought you guys were watching a comedy if i just listened to yall commentary and not know what film that was being watched.
This may be the GREATEST MOVIE EVER! Nothing I have EVER seen has made me as EMOTIONAL as this MIND- BOGGLINGLY AMAZING GODZILLA MOVIE!! Also... Reptar is based on Godzilla...

People always point out the weird fish. I think it is foreshadowing, they die at "deep sea" then rise quickly and decompress, turning them inside out. This is what they wanted to do to ゴジラ,but he stopped halfway and had time to heal.
Clearly these guys didn't watch any of the original Godzilla movies where the actor was in a suit because the original Godzilla was much smaller then recent American versions and Godzilla was canonically the villain

If this movie made you feel a certain way and made you cry or wanting to cry, I’d say that it’s done it’s job! But if you would had told me then that a Godzilla movie of all things would do this to you, I would had never believed it. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve cried quite a few times watching this movie. Godzilla Minus One was worth the hype and I’m enjoying watching people reacting to it. Unlike most Kajiu movies, I never really cared about the human characters. I found most of them rather annoying, unlikeable, pretentious or uninteresting. Minus One is one of those very rare exceptions. I truly cared about the human characters in this movie and wanted them to live! As for Godzilla, he was a fucking menace in this movie. It’s probably the most angry and pissed off I’ve ever seen him. Even moreso than his original counterpart. Godzilla was not HAVING it in this movie and wanted to kill them all so badly. He was terrifying and badass.
"Let's hope grandma didn't teach her to die for her country" 😂😅😂 Weed might have made that funnier than it should have been but I had to pause because I couldn't stop laughing 😂
Japan was nuked by the US. Japan did not have and definitely were not getting any nukes. They used all conventional weapons but with a non-conventional plan. A defeated country abandoned by both its enemies and its government, they were forced to fend for themselves. They fought against an impossible adversary and somehow won. Things could have gone wrong but their will to survive and build a future out of the ashes of the last war overpowered all their obstacles. Godzilla is just a movie creation, but it signifies the imminent doom in the real world that Japan would have faced immediately after the war. But they toiled hard to evade that and survived.
Noriko got that Ride or Die goin' HARD. The Hero's journey, rising from Defeat, Disgrace and dishonor to find new purpose, New values, and a will to live. It's no longer what are you willing to die for, but what are you willing to live for. How to overcome the individual and the national PTSD.
the way Koichi is greeted by his neighbor Sumiko, reminds me of the way American soldiers were treated when they came home from Vietnam. being spat in the face, called "baby killer", everything but a hero's welcome. they came home broken, demoralized. After the war, in 1980, was when the psychiatric community finally changed "Shell Shock" into PTSD.
@12:00 Everyone watching yall ,we all together as a whole were staring at the 3 of you with the "Wtf is wrong with yall" face lol. Godzilla's beam is commonly called his atomic breath (which is called his "heat ray" in this movie and the black rain after the second atomic breath is called fallout which happens after radioactive nuclear explosions
Koichis raw emotion of helplessness, resentment and hatred while looking at Godzilla is the same how Haruo felt, in the Netflix animated movie at the end.
Interesting how there are a few subtitles that are different than in the theatrical version..And I prefer those subtitles over the ones here..For instance, 'We leave you the future' is a much better line than 'We make sure you have a future'..During the final battle there are a few different subtitles as well, like 'Be prepared for collision' instead of 'Brace for Impact'..A few other reactors had a version where Noriko's final line was also changed but it wasn't changed here..Like, can we just keep the original theatrical subtitles? Why so many different versions?
I swear this film absolutely destroys me,especially in the third act. My favorite characters were Akitsu the Boat Captain and Sumiko the Neighbor. When people talk about Jaws in the previous generation, this is the film im gonna compare it to in the modern generation of how Story and characters> Budget every time.
Fun fact: Takashi Yamazaki the director of this film is a big fan of Godzilla, he also featured Godzilla as cameo in "Always: Sunset on Third Street" on 2005 and he is the director of "Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle" which have same design for Godzilla in this film
If you remember in some of the movies, they said that Godzilla used to be a dinosaur of some sorts. It was mutated from the radioactivity of the atomic bomb testing. Basically, the first scene with Godzilla is the Godzillasaur. This movie has done a lot of callbacks from the 1954 movie This movie had the best visuals out of anything, which is why it one an Oscar for it Godzilla's healing factor is a legendary, as the movie is explained when he heals from a wound. It looks like nothing happened to it at all, which is why the special effects look like it's doing damage to him, but in reality it's not. The atomic breath literally blew me away when it caused an actual atomic explosion. I thought it would just be a beam, but he was firing off condensed atomic energy that would concentrate on one point and then boom! I love that they used his theme on three separate occasions and it matched so well with every scene The director said that the girl has Godzilla cells meaning there could be a possibility she will get a mutation it could be physical or even mental Also, "monster ray"? 😂 Godzilla's atomic breath comes from within due to the fact that he was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombs as well as hydrogen bombs. Godzilla is the representation of the misuse of nuclear weaponry, and this movie represents the lingering effects of it
To think the film only cost around $15 million. That's it. Actors, sets, CGI, script, production...just $15 million. This movie shows Hollywood that you don't need to spend hundreds of millions to make a grand, visually impressive film.
A person from Ireland I was never able to watch any of the godzilla films in the cinema, but last year, i saw Godzilla minus one, and it is easily the best Godzilla film of all time and this was after seeing Natioal Treasure And now Oscar winning Cillian Murphy Oppenheimer easily the best two films of last year
The spines acted as cooling rods, so when they popped out it was in preparation for creating a nuclear reaction with the intake of oxygen, then expelled in a concentrated blast of ionizing radiation. The mark on Noriko's neck was confirmed by the director to be a Godzilla cell infecting her body, but it's also the only reason she was able to survive Ginza.
Japanese Writer/Director, Takashi Yamazaki, used Dates to mark historical references of Post War Japan. Also, using props and scenes of historical facts. Survivors of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing of March 10th 1945", mankind's worst, more casualties in one night and lost in history to the Hiroshima Bomb. The Black Market scene with the "Hustler's and Harlots", to introduce Noriko & Akiko to Koichi is brilliant. The Warships and Rear Propeller Plane are historical facts. The "Takao" was involved in the attack of Pearl Harbor. Koichi's '37 Japanese manufactured Harley Davidson Motorcycle is a favorite. Very cool. Too many historical references to list. Akiko's stuffed animal must be a historical toy too, lol. Noticed these things after a second viewing, ignoring the subtitles. A great story around "Gojira" the Japanese Monster.
Most people don't know that Tokyo had the big air raid by the Americans in 1945 and about 10,000 people died in one night because of it. Besides Tokyo, many cities have the same history. Not just Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So the scenes after the atomic breath are not completely fake at all.
When you think about how a nuclear reactor works, his spines shooting out when he is charging up is like the control rods coming up to increase power generation.
According to the film's official book, this godzilla is a divine entity that cannot be killed, this is not the first time that godzilla has been presented to us in this way, godzilla gmk from 2001 is a type of ghost possessed by spirits from the second world war, and godzilla singular point from 2021 is a cosmic entity from a higher plane

Watching this movie in theaters for the first time was honestly breathtaking, such a great homage to the original
Was mind blowing in IMAX...
Godzilla is an analogy for Nuclear Weapons. You can't really kill him similar to how you can't stop a hurricane or a volcano. While you can stop him, he'll just come back with more devastation then the last.
46:19 I started laughing at this part of their reaction to Godzilla’s powerful atomic breath
It was an unwritten rule established with the first Godzilla film in 1954 that Godzilla never eats people. The studios have all followed that rule.
I feel like Godzilla is supposed to represent as a living natural disaster. If Godzilla eats people, it would seem like he's no different than an oversized animal.
using a decompression sickness as a weapon to at least hurt godzilla was the smartest thing i noticed. while the sudden crushing depths are usually hard on many things, decompression can be as deadly. you can start to see tissue damage at 1:18:21
It's actually a first as well. Using the ocean against Godzilla has never been done before in any other Godzilla film. It's brilliant.
If you haven't already, you should play war thunder it has the shiden in the game
@@aaronthe747fan Thanks, I did once. Shinden is one of my favortie aircraft design.
The Shinden was used when during the bombing of Pearl Harbor iirc
@@EmilyDragonQueen Actually, no. Shinden’s prototype was built in June of 1945.
That's not a war-torn village, one of the residential areas in Tokyo. A lot of these places were literally burnt to the ground.
45:48 I really loved the charge up of Godzilla's atomic breath. It was super cool that his spines glow and rise up as he charged up and how the spines immediately press down when he unleashed the full might of the atomic breath

When I was a student, I read about the ship in a textbook, but I didn't know that it had influenced Godzilla in the movie.

I like how guys actually pay attention to the movie and not trying crack jokes every 5 seconds. It made it enjoyable to watch.

They will laugh their heads off when they see Shohei Imamura's “Black Rain” (1989).
The fact this movie was made for less than $15 million is impressive.

If this movie made you feel a certain way and made you cry or wanting to cry, I’d say that it’s done it’s job!

Weed might have made that funnier than it should have been but I had to pause because I couldn't stop laughing 😂
Fun fact: this movie won the oscars for best visual effects
Hands down the best film I saw in 2023.
If godzilla regenerate again it might be godzilla minus 2
the way Koichi is greeted by his neighbor Sumiko, reminds me of the way American soldiers were treated when they came home from Vietnam. being spat in the face, called "baby killer", everything but a hero's welcome. they came home broken, demoralized. After the war, in 1980, was when the psychiatric community finally changed "Shell Shock" into PTSD.
I'm glad you enjoyed that masterpiece, This is how you direct and make a Monster movie. 10/10

Godzilla's beam is commonly called his atomic breath (which is called his "heat ray" in this movie and the black rain after the second atomic breath is called fallout which happens after radioactive nuclear explosions
This movie shows on what godzilla really is a monster created from war
That final Godzilla nightmare fuel shot... shows just how much he HATES humanity...he was happy to melt himself too to kill more humans
This movie has done a lot of callbacks from the 1954 movie
This movie had the best visuals out of anything, which is why it one an Oscar for it
Godzilla's healing factor is a legendary, as the movie is explained when he heals from a wound.
I love that they used his theme on three separate occasions and it matched so well with every scene
The director said that the girl has Godzilla cells meaning there could be a possibility she will get a mutation it could be physical or even mental
Also, "monster ray"? 😂 Godzilla's atomic breath comes from within due to the fact that he was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombs as well as hydrogen bombs. Godzilla is the representation of the misuse of nuclear weaponry, and this movie represents the lingering effects of it
To think the film only cost around $15 million. That's it. Actors, sets, CGI, script, production...just $15 million. This movie shows Hollywood that you don't need to spend hundreds of millions to make a grand, visually impressive film.
This is the best Godzilla film ever made. Great reaction gentlemen! 👍🏿

I worry about the Toho Ninjas, but this is an incredible movie.
