    DC Talk was the greatest christian band of all times! When they decided to “take a break” I thought: “If one of them achieves success independently from each other, it’ll be VEEEERY hard to come together again!”. Why? Think about it: In a band you gotta bounce of ideas, can’t do things your own way, money, etc etc...it’s in a way, WAAAY less stressful to be a solo artist than a band. And that’s exactly what happened! Toby specially, plays in arenas, has #1 albums, etc etc..all without “the drama”. What is the result?! DC talk became secondary! Who am I to judge or blame, but as a fan...BOY, do I miss them! How much GREAT music could’ve they’ve released?! When the 3 of them gets together, is something special! VERY special!

      Maybe one day they will make another record together. I sincerely hope they will. They each one brought their own special giftings to create something monumental and full of Christ. Maybe God will see fit to answer our prayers.

    Most people who are upset abut DC Talk not reuniting (and are blaming Toby for it) seem to have missed that fact that Toby is doing right now what he believes he is CALLED to do by God - and that is working with Diverse City. He says it clearly in this interview. There's a lot more ego, money, hype and noise around a DC Talk reunion and I just think Toby is just keeping it real and staying true to his calling. At least give him the benefit of the doubt for being sincere in his believe that.

      No-it is a cop out. Those guys could tour with DC Talk just as the Newsboys crew could-they would all make more money that year as well. So fine to not want to do it-that is not the reason.

    Hits deep tour April 9,2017 I was fortunate to see Toby rock and worship The name of Our Lord Jesus in Indianapolis IN. The whole show was pure beauty,The Holy Spirit was present. As well,that experience reminded me not to judge a book by its cover. Meaning the individuals color of skin does not matter,we don't know as children of The Lord what the situation is with that person standing,dancing,& worshiping next to you is. We were in harmony. Everybody is beautiful.

    when dc talk started, it was toby's group. the first 3 albums had him at the forefront, and he wrote nearly all the songs himself. with JF, they put mike & kevin up to the front and they showed that they were the true talent. on supernatural it's hard to even hear toby on the record unless you really pay attention. he got some lines, but was almost regulated to backup singer status.
    when you watch live performances from 2001, you can see how mike and kevin (kevin especially) are hogging the limelight, singing nonstop, while toby is just kind of standing around looking angry. he went from being the center of the group to the weakest link, and i think that tension is what caused the "intermission". now with diverse city, he's back to being the top dog, and surprisingly the only successful solo member carrying his own weight. he doesn't want to give all that up for dc talk. he worked hard to build the toby mac solo brand, and i don't think he can bear being pushed back into backup singer mode for dc talk. it's not like they'd even play nu thang/free at last songs with the exception of hardway and maybe jesus is just alright.
    while i wish he would realize that the talent of all 3 members together is greater than apart, i think he still carries resentment on how mike & kevin took over "his" group.

    • @Rawk4Life
      @Rawk4Life 7 лет назад +4

      No offense, but that is not even close to why DC Talk went on indefinite hiatus. Tobymac WANTED Mike and Kevin to be included more on the group's songs when seeing how phenomenal their third album "Free at Last" became. Toby had said early on in DCT's career that they originally did not have plans on becoming a group because they all had 3 different musical directions that they wanted to pursue. That desire became a reality when they jointly agreed to doing their own side projects in 2001 when they released the "Solo EP" featuring songs that they all recorded separately for their upcoming solo efforts.
      Before 2005, Toby, Mike, and Kevin had said they would consider a future reunion, and maybe a new album, but only when they were ready. The reality is that Toby is too focused with his backup band Diverse City, while continuing to write and record for new albums, to make time for a new DC Talk project, or a full fledged tour. It's also for this reason that his own label Gotee Records, which he co-founded with Todd Collins and Joey Elwood in 1994, currently only has 4 artists on the roster (Capital Kings, Finding Favour, Hollyn, and Ryan Stevenson).
      Whether you agree or not, any kind of future DC Talk may have is left in the hands of Tobymac. He came up with the group name, signed off on any transitions the group made musically during the latter half of the 90's, and only makes guest appearances with Tait and the Newsboys on stage when his band has a break in their touring schedule. Toby, Mike, and Kevin are all aged 50-52, so my guess is that Toby will go 4 or 5 more years as a solo artist, then retire from performing to get in the groove of operating Gotee Records full time. If no new DC Talk album is announced by the end of 2017, Toby should call it a wrap on the group, so that fans can quit being impatient on whether or not it was meant to happen.

      comeonclarkman you are so right, he ain't nothing without kevin and mike. And he got scared... and started sabotaging the group; I also believe that he gaslighted and sabotaged Kevin Max's solo career. I mean this guy can't even rap or sing and he's the most successful in the group?...Give me a break.

    • @NoNonsense77
      @NoNonsense77 7 лет назад

      Please be better informed-Toby was and the group. He and the producer wrote the songs-no group without them. Those last albums Toby let the others shine more-they wrote songs to cater to them. The last album credits Kevin and MT as writers, but no, they didn't take over-it was most likely a act of kindness to make it appear they had a bigger part in everything as the songs were not way better on that album.
      So great if you like the singing over the raps, but to pretend it wasn't in reality Toby mostly is just not true.
      And Kevin ruined his own career by trying to always be s different. If there is no Euro Pop in Christian music-big risk doing that kind of album. Great if he just cares about being artistic, but he is the one that chose to go in that direction and I am sure folks tried to warn him of the risks.
      I personally liked it, but I get why most did not. You sadly only get one shot at a first impression and he chose to be risky.

    Oh Toby, there you go with that same rehearsed line about why dc Talk can't happen. He makes it sound like he would be unfairly leaving his band in the dust. Why hasn't Michael Tait shared this view? Because he would happily bring the Newsboys band along with him in a dc Talk reunion tour. I wish for once the people interviewing Toby woukd bring this up. It sounds like the only thing dc Talk needs to make a reunion happen is preparedness. Set something up for 2018. Bring your bands with you. Open with Kevin, the Newsboys, and have TobyMac set. Then, with the bands you brought along (who, I'm sure, could kill a set of dc Talk songs), close with a dc Talk set. Not that hard, and nobody mentions this to him. Both Kevin and Tait have said they're ready, but Toby keeps dragging his feet with the same rehearsed excuses. If he's done with dc Talk, I'd have a whole lot more respect for him if he'd just say it, instead of making people think he just can't do it for band and family reasons.

    • @BobNathaniel
      @BobNathaniel 8 лет назад +1

      Well said. I agree with you. It does sound like he is done with dc talk, especially in this particular interview. It's almost like he is frustrated about being asked dc talk related questions. And I've always envisioned the two bands (Diverse City & Newsboys) backing dc talk up. They would nail it.

      Hey man, I know your comment is from a few months ago but I just stopped by lol. Just from this interview alone, I feel Toby was really real, and very clear that he is done with DC Talk. He wasn't dragging his feet at all. He said (among other reasons) that it was 20 years ago, a different time, something that started with his college roommates and he's so far from that now. He also made it clear that its more than just bringing band logistics together (which you're right seems easy enough to do) - he said he believes Diverse City is his calling now and it's what He is supposed to do. He even opened up and said he felt it's unfair for people to expect him to just drop everything and "go back" to do DC Talk again. If anything, it's not about the money, fame, or hype. He'd get a lot more of that if he reunited with DC Talk. I think he's just keeping it real. My 2 cents. Cheers.

  • @PeterHeerschap

    Why couldn't all their bands take a tour together, newsboys, tobymac and dc talk all in one show, that could be a thing. It isn't unusual for multiple bands to tour together. You guys could even cross promote, tobymac fans could see some newsboys.

      No-it is simple-they all do it with other bands each year many times. Toby is just being difficult for whatever reason. Not buying "the boat" is too blame for the hype about the cruise either-they didn't control everyone's social media.

    • @Ironica82
      @Ironica82 6 лет назад

      The biggest difference is the energy that they would have to put into it. Think about it, different bands tour together yet do one set then rest. If they did it, both Toby and Michael would have to do two sets, one with their band and then one as DC Talk. They aren't that young anymore so all the practicing and performances that they would do would be too much for them (as well as having a lack of energy for the audience so they might feel somewhat cheated if halfway though the DC Talk set, they just sat down and sung the rest of it (can you imagine Jesus Freak being sung by people just sitting down on stools?)).

  • @MrFunkyjive
    @MrFunkyjive 7 лет назад +3

    It doesn't have to be nostalgic. It would be so very inspiring & minister to millions if they did an album & toured all together. They could bring some art back to Christian music & show people how creative God is by winning Grammys not just dove awards. That's not a good reason even to say I can't do dc talk bc there's families I would let down. Any musician knows their gig isn't forever & that it's a situation where you're always doing something else & seeking other gigs. Make the band up for dc Talk of people from the other bands if that's what's ruining it for you.

    His comments about a reunion are disappointing. Sounds like he has moved on and wish everyone else would, as well. And I think the interviewer makes a good point about a documentary or something. I had not ever heard of the movie and had to google it. A documentary, with their assistance would help everyone move on I think. The way that they ended things and called it an "intermission" led everyone to believe there would be a next chapter. That next D.C. Talk chapter hasn't happened yet.

    If Slash can juggle touring endlessly with Guns N' Roses while continuing to record and tour his solo material (with an entirely separate band), I'm pretty sure Toby can figure something out, too. These are excuses and it's quite transparent. The cruise was easy, quick money and they didn't have to do a whole tour or album. It's sad that he can't just be honest about it and say that he doesn't want to reunite the band because he cares more about his solo work.

    His excuse for not doing at least a tour is so lame. Yeah, those guys wouldn't want to play in bigger arenas and make more money for a year or so-right. You do a DC Talk tour with Toby and DC, the Newsboys and K-MAx can do some solo stuff-real simple.
    They all tour at least half the year with various bands already-not a hard problem to solve Toby.
    Fine to just flat out say you won't do it, but his excuses are lame.
    Also not buying "the boat" did all the promos for "the announcement." Not a fan of lying.
