Christine is the goat. There's a fella in my town (Australia) who imported a Plymouth Fury and did her up exactly like Christine. I flagged him down when he was cruising one day and had a great chat about Stephen King for a couple of hours. Absolute icon.

In the book, her odometer ran backwards. Reversing any damage. He never put gas in her, I think she drove her tank full.

Interestingly, in the book, she can damage herself badly enough so that she can't self repair without being pushed. If enough of the engine or the drive shaft is taken fully out of commission, she requires pushing. It's mentioned in one scene, but only toyed with-- the broken part catches back on.
Book has it so that she needs to be moving forward in order to self repair-- the odometer running backwards actually takes back TIME, Christine HERSELF is a rolling time warp.
Every death associated with her becomes forever TRAPPED in her across ALL TIMES the car has experienced. Dennis rides along as he does in the movie, and from inside the car the world outside is an impossible amalgamation of from the fifties to the seventies.
A seventies car parked in front of a building that hadn't existed since the fifties, traffic stopping at greens and blowing through reds, various items people had hung from the mirror (King got some pretty basic stuff about the car wrong) over the years appear and shift into other things and then vanish. The living corpses of her kills shift and change in the back seat from the original owner's little daughter to Repperton himself offering Dennis a pull off his booze.
When Arnie goes to leave Dennis at the still under construction project that isn't even his house yet, he gets out anyway just to stop the ride-- the world ripples around him and he's back in his own time.

I remember hearing - I think on the Dead Meat Kill Count - that part of the reason Christine's so tame is Carpenter was still gun-shy from how folks reacted to The Thing, especially the violence and gore. (I'm as disappointed in 1982's audiences as you.) They still needed it to have an R rating which is why they have the almost over the top profanity to make sure they locked the rating in.

I like the fact that the narrator describes the wrecking of Christine by the school bullies as being like the “Greased Lightning” scene from “Grease” in reverse. That was my thought when l was watching the bullies trashing the car.
