When Johnny came up to the mic that second time, they all grinned when he forgot the lyrics - they were having a great time. Whenever Stevie played special shows like this prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival, he would invite friends to share the spotlight - he loved Johnny Copeland and brought him up. I can't watch this without crying like a baby. tragic loss.
But Johnny, like the pro he was, didn't blink and played a guitar solo instead. And it was great. These guys never rehearsed this - you can see Stevie explaining the Johnny in the first couple of notes how he's tuned down a half step to Eb and that Johnny shouldn't pay any attention to where his fingers were. It's the key of Bm. After 10 seconds Johnny understood and this was magic.
Stevie Ray Vaughan said the first time he heard a Muddy Watters record he knew he wanted to play the Blues, all the great Blues artists her heard when he was around 7-8 years old he would have them perform with him and everyone would want to hear more of them, artists like Johnny Copeland's career was stalled and Stevie Ray heat their careers back up. Stevie Ray never stole the spotlight anyway from anyone who performed with him because he had so much love and respect for them all. LOVE ME SOME STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN
Two Texas legends. The late Johnny Copeland was the father of blues singer Shemeika Copeland, and his song Houston is a good example of what he could bring to the table. His record Showdown with Albert Collins and Robert Cray is so great, its stupid. Stevie loved all these OG's he grew up listening to and emulating. One of his signature traits was his humbleness and generosity of spirit. When he heard that Albert King was struggling to get a tour bus, Stevie went out and bought him a fully equipped Madden Cruiser. He had it like that, and wanted to give back.
I went to high school with Robert Cray and Albert Collins played at our senior graduation party. I think Robert might have had something to do with that.
Does blues get any better? Two great musicians at the top of their game, not trying to show each other up, just each doing their own thing to put out one great song together.
Once SRV moved up to clubs in Austin (especially Antone's) after Cheatham St Warehouse he had the influence of clubs owners to ask for his heros to come to Austin. His older brother Jimmy's records were mostly black blues players. And SRV played the grooves off Jimmy's records when Jimmy himself hit the road. Those silver lining of SRV's short genius life is his dream was answered to play with all the great black bluesmen still alive. It brought soul to Austin, that started with country music then rock then SRV and blues. It's not as good these days too expensive like everywhere else, but Austin has an ear for good music. Gary Clark Jr hopefully will carry the torch.
It’s at Montreaux Switzerland, and you’ll hear either Tommy or Chris saying, “ TWO AND A HALF YEARS TOMORROW!” right before the concert, since, as he tells this crowd later in the show, they were steadily and consistently BOOED at Montreaux in 1982.❤
I enjoyed watching Stevie Ray and Albert King in session in another video, and they were great, but after seeing this one with Johnny Copeland, wow, it's the best. Stevie Ray's voice is raspy and jazzy and bluesy and I love it. Even in his singing, he puts his heart and soul into it. His guitar playing is one of a kind and brilliant. I watched another video where the gentleman was explaining about guitar gauges and a lot of guitarists usually use 9 or 10 gauge, Stevie Ray was using 13 gauge! No wonder he chipped his tooth! LOL! These two men complimented one another in their performances together. Johnny Copeland is suave and smooth. He's a master and I enjoyed listening to him. I love his style. Stevie Ray's music was a world unto itself. When he was on that stage and he played and sang, it's like everyone around him became oblivious, and it was just him and his guitar! He's my #1 favorite artist of all time, (outside of the opera great, Luciano Pavarotti). Had Stevie Ray lived, can you imagine how his music would have expanded! He was taken from us too soon!
I don't believe there is anything more that Stevie loved than to be able to shed light on his idols and share the stage with them. SRV is the conduit through which music flows......
I will ALWAYS be sad/mad that i never got to see him in person. Such an incredible talent and this is my favortie song ever. This video specifically, pure music. As pure as it gets.
I saw him 5 or 6 times, and I hate to tell you this, but none of his recordings begin to capture how he sounded in person. He had a hard funk edge, reminded me of Parliament, but it flowed underneath the music so you couldn't hear it so much as just sense it. Hard to describe, never heard anything like ti before or since. First time I saw him was a double start show, as in announcer says "Please welcome Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble," stage lights come up, SRV hits the first note of Scuttle Buttin and blows a transformer in the neighborhood so the whole theater immediately went black and silent, as did nearly the entire block. One frigging note. After a few minutes, a man hollered from the stage in the pitch black for everybody to stay put while Duke Power came out to fix the problem. And about 45 minutes or so later, the show started again, and this time the power grid held ... and I'd tell you about the rest except YT has been deleting my comments because I cuss too much already.
Stevie had genuine love for his heroes and looked to lift them up every chance he got (watch him playing with Albert King, or BB King or Buddy Guy or Lonnie Mack or Clapton) and NEVER looked to show them up (And he absolutely could've if he wanted to). He was so humble which only contributed to his greatness
They were greats in their own rights. It’s a different aesthetic (less is more) when you’re talking about. Johnny Coplena or Albert King,, but you can’t say they were ever showed up or even could be. Stevie knew music is not a competition. These are artists full of expression!
SRV was SO humble that he wouldn't even acknowledge that he was, and let's be frank here folks, the greatest living Bluesman/Guitarist ever.... He surpassed them ALL.... And guys, we just wanted you to understand his level of guitar BEFORE we ever got to the VOCALS! I mean, you can only take so much of his greatness before MORE of it is heaped on you👍😉
"Stevie was an endless, open channel that music just poured out of. He made people who'd never touched a guitar in their life want to pick one up and start playing, and he made those of us who'd played live onstage with him before want to quit."..................Eric Clapton.
‘It’s just better than everyone else’. I agree. ❤ It’s his intimacy with that guitar, the way they truly become a part of each other and become one. It’s extremely rare, jaw dropping and magical.
Man I just love these SRV reactions. Got me into guitar almost 2 years back, and I know its altered my life forever. The way I hear music and all. Y'all always have great commentary too, love seeing some of my favorite performances pop up on the channel. Three SRV live performance reactions I recommend: Little Wing OR Lenny live @ the El Mocambo, and Life Without You @ the Capitol Theatre.. some of his best live stuff I think. Never gets old.
Great reaction guys💯👏🙌. This was one of three songs that Johnny joined in on at the Montreux Switzerland Jazz Festival in 1985. The song that came next was "Look at Little Sister" which is a rocking good time. It is well worth a watch. Ironically "Look at Little Sister" from the 1989 Austin City Limits concert is where you will see Stevie pop a string and witness the smoothest, most seamless guitar switch you will ever see! His team was so practiced in switching out guitars for Stevie they were like a race car pit crew. I love Stevie's vocals for lots of reasons but I especially love how he can change up his voice to better convey the emotion of what he is singing. One of my favorite songs is one Stevie wrote which is "Aint Gone 'N' Give Up On Love" performed at the Capitol Theatre 1985 Passaic NJ. It is a bluesy love song you guys will really love. Really enjoying your channel! Keep SRV coming cuz you have barely scratched the surface of this amazing artist🎸🎶‼️💙💯
Yes, Harriet - thanks for the info - I really love the Austin CL "Look at Little Sister" - not only for the smooth change on string break, but also for the incredible Reese Wynans on keys!
@@GinMae and it gave Stevie a real break to have Reece share the lead. They were a true band of brothers. Stevie always insisted all performance fees be spilt 4 ways. That was practically unheard of but he wouldn't have it any other way. An interviewer once asked something about "his band" and he answered by saying that he was their guitar player✌️💯. Always humble and giving credit to others.
"Ain't Gonna Give Up on Love" Capital Theatre.... is the best vocal and solo that exemplifies his emotive singing...& playing.....forming the perfect performance. There's a tiny smile when the crowd goes nuts following his solo that's endearing. No stage 'fireworks (which I love, of course) just pared down, relatable blues....pain & optimism. A song always in his line-up. Perfection.
Johnny Copeland was an amazing guitar player and you can see Stevie Ray and Johnny just amazed at each others playing, great respect for each other’s talent
Blues grand master Albert King adopted SRV!! There's footage of them after a show, Albert tells the cameras " this is the only white boy you'll ever meet with a black daddy!!"
My favorite story Stevie’s band tells us that Stevie didn’t have stage clothes and street clothes. What he has in is what he wore to the grocery store. Just Stevie’s clothes. I love that. Can you imagine seeing this dude in Walmart? Hahaha
This is the 1985 Montreaux Jazz Fest. SRV flew Johnny to Switzerland and had him do a few songs with the band. And as you can tell, Stevie and Johnny were tight. Both were super sweet men and badass musicians. I think Johnny's daughter Shemekia is a singer, too. Johnny lived seven years after Stevie died in that helicopter crash.
I agree with you brothers. You make my heart smile because I always loved Stevie's playing, but that man could also sing. I mean SING! I just appreciate you both for seeing the talent and understanding Stevie ALWAYS gave credit to the black folks that helped make this country better with music.
Both, absolutely incredible. No politics, social barriers, life weighing you down. Just damn incredibly moving music. The blues transcends all cultures, creeds and barriers.
SRV loved to share the stage with the blues legends. For the best of the best you need to check out the sessions with Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King was one of his favorites I promise you you need to check it out, the entire session or break it up you can start with Born Under a Bad Sign. Just a side note, I saw Stevie Ray in St.Louis in 89&90 was incredible
I agree Albert Collins was a huge influence on Stevie and Albert took Stevie under his wing. That whole 90 minute session of them together is a Treasure of Pleasure💙💙🎸🎶‼️
Everyone of the old blues performer had a huge surge in popularity in the 80s because of Stevie. Many of them made more in the 80s than they had all their lives. Some of them went from having to perform nightly gigs at small places to just to pay rent, to having enough to retire comfortably if they wanted to.
Thousands and thousands of fans love his vocals! I gotta admit they are usually mentioned second though... BTW...the way he dressed on stage is the way he always dressed!
It does NOT get any better than this!!!! Legends on stage!! I remember hearing this for the first time and just staring at them with mouth open wide, not able to talk.
Most people do not know that Stevie's guitar was hard wired to his brain and when he was born, doctors were shocked to see that he had a guitar with in his hands :)😁
"What technique is that callled?" 😅 you guys notice all the right stuff! SRV is so amazing..I hope you also react to: Life Without You Ain't Gon Give Up On Love Change It All. Live at The Capitol Theatre..then maybe on to the Japan concert?🙏ty for this reaction 💞✌️
Love your recommendations as usual Starfire🎸‼️. The Toyko concert is one of my favorites❣️❣️💙. His version of Voodoo Chile from there is so next level it can't be touched.
You guys will go crazy for “Dirty pool” in montreaux 82’ or at Texas tornado jam…either concert. This is the early SRV that put his name on The map. Absolutely next level.
I subscribed when you first reacted to SRV. I am so glad y’all are still reacting to him. He is my absolute favorite!!! And I love the reactions y’all are doing!!! There are so many great videos of him. Please don’t stop. I would love to see your reaction to SRV Life Without You live from The Capitol Theater. It not only shows his talents as an entertainer, but also you will see his character shine through. Also, watch towards the end when he looks off stage and grins and mouths “lost my tooth”, and then “gone”. He is amazing ♥️
Stevie had and showed so much respect to the legends that come before him and he looking up too he was honored to be able to share the stage with them and never tried to outshine or play over them . I remember reading in the book Texas Flood where Stevie was going to play a show and BB King was also playing when Stevie got to the place and saw the had BB as an opening act he went crazy and refuse to play that night without they changed the sign because he said BB Long is not an opening act he demanded they put him as a co main act.
Was Blessed to see the GOAT with Buddy Guy. Picked jaw of floor at least a dozen times that night. I am 67 and been blessed to have seen a lot of iconic players live from Clapton to Beck but SRV can put you in a trance. Merry Christmas you two and keep em coming. New Sub
This is 1985 Montreaux Copeland was supposed to sing last verse and he forgot the words, so he did another solo, that's why Stevie was shaking his finger
I was there the night Stevie crashed in the copter. His brother, Jimmy Vaughn (Fabulous Thunderbirds) sat in with him that night and they did this number. Hell of a night. The last song Stevie ever played on stage was Sweet Home Chicago. It was during Eric Clapton's encore when all performers and guests jammed together. The lineup was Eric, Stevie, Jimmy, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. It didn't suck at all
Stevie's genius shines - 'Riviera Paradise' at Austin City Limits in 1989. Lenny, Little Wing and Third Stone from the Sun at the El Mocambo in '83. I could go on. Ok, I will - Tin Pan Alley/Dirty Pool, Tokyo, Japan in 85.
Two Texas blues legends on stage right here! Loss of SRV way too soon, I saw SRV a few times in the 80’s as a kid. Still love all his music to this day, nothing beats it!!!
It’s just better than everybody else’s! YES!!! 💯 The TONE that he gets is just BEAUTIFUL. People might be able to play his songs, but they don’t have that certain sound that I’ve only ever heard from Stevie. He’s the 🐐
They played to more songs @ this concert. One was "look @ little sister'. They all went crazy its on yt. And SRV his brother jimmy and another legend played the 1989 presidential inauguration pure 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥SRV was breaking strings and playing behind his head. Just amazing! He gave the ppl what they wanted.
I find myself smiling to you guys discovering the pure magic of SRV! I had the same reaction at age 14 when I got into SRV, and that was 40 years ago! After that I couldn't get enough of his music. I was lucky enough to see him play live at the Redwood Amphitheater at Marriot's Great America about 2 years before he died in that helicopter crash. I heard it announced on the radio in the car and I cried all the way home. Can't wait to meet him in Heaven someday, my late wife will probably introduce us.
Just ain’t fair is it ?!? SRV has so many epically good collaborations with top tier talented artists , it’s should be a category all by itself ! BB and SRV even recorded a duet up in Canada. Unbelievable ! ✌🏼❤️
It really doesn't get better then that performance for blues duets - you can only hope to equal it. Legends and yes SRV has a great underrated voice. This and Texas Flood are so great vocally too! He would be the guy to beat the devil at the crossroads - the golden guitar forever his!
OutfreakingStanding ... SRV was a great young upcoming artist ... He caught the Blues Fever and absolutely idolized the Blues greats ... They actually taught SRV to slow down and release the passion in the music ... I have the CD with SRV and Brother Albert King ... It's FIRE 🔥... It's definitely worth your time ohhh and I absolutely appreciate you for covering this absolute MASTERPIECE
Y'all are about the same age as me so maybe this might sound familiar. I remember driving my grandma and her friend , Mrs Mary Johnson to bingo when I was about 16. I had a cassette in the car playing Stevie Ray and Mrs Mary asks me " whatcha know about that music baby, that's grown folks music". I said "idk ma'am, it makes me feel something more than the stuff on the radio.". From then on whenever I'd see her on she would ask me if I liked specific tracks from Stevie or talk about other blues artists she thought I might like. I enjoyed my conversations with that nice old lady talking about grown folks music.
I've known Stevie was incredible for years. He ain't black or white...........he's blue! This was my first exposure to Johnny Copeland and he is amazing. Great voice. He doesn't have Stevie's tricks but what he does is make every every note count. He filled each and every note with purpose and feeling. That's hard as hell to do. I have to go learn more. Really loved this guys. Thank you!
It was Awesome there was no rehearsal. They just played. But when your a diehard Stevie Ray Vaughan fan it just common to see shit like this. I followed em all over the US and in 4 Countries. And he never let me down. It was always something special. ❤MY STEVIE RAY ❤️
Amazing! thanks, guys -- I love that both Stevie & Johnny do their own singing while playing... both masters! SRV playing that speed - almost like "flamenco"-style... only what? "blues-flamenco" - never been another... Despite JC's great blues guitar, Stevie is doing background fill that is super-creative...
I love SRV's vocals too, and of course its not what people talk about because...come on. But he is the triple threat: writer, player, singer. I was among the lucky ones who got to see him, with Joe Cocker for me, the show before the accident. He only looks and sounds better with age too. Glad ya'll are on board! Much love your way...
Try Live at Buddy Guy's club...Stevie joins him on the tiny,k tiny stage for "Champagne And Reefer". Sweaty, gritty, & a sublime collaboration of two men who loved each other. The song is perfection and Guy is wonderful.
My favorite song by SRV.❤️
Stevie had complete respect for the blues greats that came before him.

I promise you you need to check it out, the entire session or break it up you can start with Born Under a Bad Sign.
Air play needs to check out sessions with Albert King & SRV Also check out Gary Moore & Albert king " Stormy Monday " Must CHECK IT OUt ! Please
Was that the tour he did with Jeff Beck?
@@cycomiles4225 sure was
Everyone of the old blues performer had a huge surge in popularity in the 80s because of Stevie. Many of them made more in the 80s than they had all their lives. Some of them went from having to perform nightly gigs at small places to just to pay rent, to having enough to retire comfortably if they wanted to.
In an interview Stevie said he loved Johnny Copeland because he was "real". Can't imagine much better praise than that.
My new favorite thing: Watching reaction videos to SRV. Insanely enjoyable. My mind is blown every time I listen.
First time I heard this song absolutely blew my mind .. still does today.
#RIPStevie
"What technique is that callled?" 😅 you guys notice all the right stuff! SRV is so amazing..I hope you also react to:
Life Without You
Ain't Gon Give Up On Love
Change It
All.
@@harrietmiller3982 and what about those red pants? 🥰
@@starfire6122 he was looking extra pretty all in red~ I love the bouncy, free, fun time he was having~✌️💙
@@starfire6122 Ah yes....those red pants....yup.
Thank God someone recorded this. Two of the 🐐 together! 🔥
The best discription I heard of SRV's voice is( honey over gravel ) a great way to put it . RIP Stevie . You are missed .
Styles perfectly matched.
New Sub
This is 1985 Montreaux
Copeland was supposed to sing last verse and he forgot the words, so he did another solo, that's why Stevie was shaking his finger
It didn't suck at all
Stevie shows complete respect to his heros, this being one of them. B.B. King loved him .
Johnny is a great singer. Only got to see him once with Robert Cray. He blew the roof off thr place!
Stevie always loved playing with his heroes. Gave respect to those before him.
He’s the 🐐
Philip Sayce is pretty close. His live preformance of Alchemy
TOP GOAT
Just ain’t fair is it ?!? SRV has so many epically good collaborations with top tier talented artists , it’s should be a category all by itself ! BB and SRV even recorded a duet up in Canada. Unbelievable ! ✌🏼❤️
Y’all got it right!!!! Love SRV and Copeland
This has always been one of my favorite performances. Great choice!
I wish Johnny would have remembered his last two verses, but Stevie Ray picks them up flawlessly. They have a good laugh about it at the end.
I saw Stevie Ray on his first tour! That show still affects me in many ways.
You should absolutely check out Life Without You. Stellar vocals!
This is one of favorite performances. Two Blues Masters playing together. God Bless Johnny and Stevie
MESMERIZING!! I haven't heard Copeland before, THANKS for the education. Great video and your reactions. Love finding gems like this 💎🎸🎙🎶🎵🎶
It really doesn't get better then that performance for blues duets - you can only hope to equal it. Legends and yes SRV has a great underrated voice. This and Texas Flood are so great vocally too! He would be the guy to beat the devil at the crossroads - the golden guitar forever his!
All their own creation , no stolen samples , no big ego , just musical genius to give pleasure to all who take the time to listen.
RIP SRV & JC.🇦🇺
He was showing respect for one of the pioneers of blues!
It's definitely worth your time ohhh and I absolutely appreciate you for covering this absolute MASTERPIECE
just amazing. Great team with Copeland!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the best!!!!!
Thank you!
When you asked, “what trick was that?“ That is called tremolo strumming. There’s also tremolo picking.
It was Awesome there was no rehearsal. They just played. But when your a diehard Stevie Ray Vaughan fan it just common to see shit like this. I followed em all over the US and in 4 Countries. And he never let me down. It was always something special. ❤MY STEVIE RAY ❤️
The blues musicians are a close group of incredible sounds ❤
It was MAGIC! ❤ THAT'S MY BROTHER STEVIE RAY ❤ 💯 % HEART AND SOUL❤❤
This person puts that she's SRV's sister on every SRV reaction. SRV did not have a sister.
Amazing! thanks, guys -- I love that both Stevie & Johnny do their own singing while playing... both masters! SRV playing that speed - almost like "flamenco"-style... only what? "blues-flamenco" - never been another... Despite JC's great blues guitar, Stevie is doing background fill that is super-creative...
Love watching younger peoples first time watching music I’ve been listening to for 40+ yrs
Copeland's vocals were on fire, pure fire. What a great colab.
Try Live at Buddy Guy's club...Stevie joins him on the tiny,k tiny stage for "Champagne And Reefer".
Sweaty, gritty, & a sublime collaboration of two men who loved each other.
The song is perfection and Guy is wonderful.
One Word GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish i could give yall 100 k likes on this!! One of my favorite songs
