- Hard to believe this is already Episode No. 7. Seeing as I'm still not very good at getting these weekly updates filmed on Mondays, I've reverted back to just calling them Shop Talk. This week I dig a bit deeper into the subject of when its the right time to quit your day job. I also offer some new perspectives on how to keep work in the shop moving at all times and being more efficient with the time you have.

23:00 “Keep myself moving…” Maaan, that touched a raw nerve right now. It is sooo difficult to forget that when you are a one man business and things have been going good in the long run, you still need to keep yourself moving (and I don’t mean chasing paper mindlessly; I mean what you mean). Appreciated, sir. Seriously.
Really impressed by this gentleman's growth and humility.
Can’t wait to have orders that big
My name is Jason, my family and I started working with leather this past August, after our business was pretty much stopped due to Covid. We had a lot of time on our hands, we homeschool and my daughters wanted to learn how to make a leather purse so we watched your videos as well as Little King Goods and Stock and Barrel. Since then we have sold around 100 totes, it has been a huge blessing and something that we have been able to do as a family, like we did with our other business. What’s really cool, is we can work both businesses together and they can build off of each other. Anyway we really enjoy your videos, Thank you, for taking the time to do the shop talks as well as other videos. How big is your clicker press, would a 10 ton work for dies 18x9 basically for totes 5-6oz leather? Thank you again.
Love watching your shop talks , I’m a retired plant manager , and you brought up lots of memories, being efficient , ... the one thing you talked about was a jig that helped you sew the circles close to the edge . Love to see it or a link to make one Thank you Joe Silva
Sure! I'm always looking for little tweaks in my workflow to be more efficient. You don't notice the impacts much when you're just doing one or two items. But you really notice it on the bigger projects. Shaving a second or two off here and there adds up.
The jig idea came from Joey at Lockland Leather. I'll see if I can find a link to his video.
Best part of crafting is cutting the leather 👌🏽
Liking the videos. Crazy hours tho. You need to read the book the Emyth.
Changed my business a bunch because of it. Keep up the great work as I like hearing other makers and there struggles. Keeps it real.
Great book! I read it first back in 2006 or so, and then several time since then.
Inventory, something I need to get more organized with, can't count how many times I started something then had to set it aside because I didn't have a buckle, rivet etc... Love your shop talk episodes.
I should have mentioned this in the video (maybe next week)... Cjeckout a company here o. RUclips called FastCap. Their owner is all about Lean Manufacturing principles to keep inventory in check and work moving. I’ve picked up a lot from him.
@@OdinLeatherGoods Much appreciated will check them out
Great advise on leaving your day job. That I think, is the biggest question every crafter is asking him/her self, do I leave my day job? Improving efficiency and making things lean is probably the biggest improvement in every business. One would be surprised what can be improved when you only start looking. Most people only start looking when it costs money but little things like changing work processes can improve things for the time- and space poor single crafter especially if you still have your day job. For me the biggest problem is to get my hands on good quality consumables. NZ is a small place and most of the good stuff is imported from overseas. The disadvantage is, you don't know exactly what you are getting and you pay a higher price for it besides longer waiting times. Having said that, it pays sometimes off to go sometimes with a higher price if the supply is reliable which can be also a challenge with logistics congestion's and manufacturing problems all over the globe. I think you point out some really valid points and effects your business has on your family and the planning of how your business is going forward. Great job on your workshop talks. I'm BTW also interested on how the round sewing jig looks like. Have a fantastic week ahead and a great camping break with your family.
Odin, where do you get your dies made? I noticed your die is acrylic.. how awesome!
I use two companies - Texas Custom Dies (for the heavy duty welded black dies) and Milwaukee Steel Rule Dies (for the more detailed laser cut and thin blade dies set into Lexan). Both are great. I'll be doing a video very soon about my dies and preferences.
I would like to see the round stitching fixture, I have a cobra Class 4 and a Singer 31-15.
I got the idea from Joey at Lockland Leather in Nashville, TN. I'll see if I can find his video.
Hey guys! What's the tool used on the edges at 0:53?
It seems to be the only tool not listed in the description. :)
What clicker press is in the frame behind you?
It’s a 16 ton Cowboy.
No one cares which day you update. Do them roughly a week a part no one will ever know the difference.
Right on! I need to stop worrying about that.
