That opening for the air intake snorkel you deleted: The R32, and the "V6" (aka also VR6) Audi TTs had that larger opening, with a corresponding larger diameter snorkel. Of course, all those parts: No Longer Available from the dealers, so it's used part sources, only. So, IMO, you're just mimicking that much larger filter-box to air-snorkel hole those performance models had. And: glad to hear it improves things!
Might be worthwhile not picking up hot engine bay air by DIY'ing your own larger snorkel to pick up air from the outside, like stock so you're actually getting colder/denser air in, which'd help with power and efficiency, both.
I've only owned Jettas TDIs, so I'm not familiar with the cramped nature of the Beetle engine bay, other than looking at salvage cars and fixing a friend's Beetle 2.slow radiator fan. The Golf/Jetta both pick up air up front at the highest pressure point just below the start of the hood.
I was familiar with most of your previous mechanical mods, but the air snorkel/airfilter/intake pre-turbo I hadn't really heard as much about. I'm gonna go look at the Beetle's snorkel pre-filter box now and compare to what the other mk4 cars use.
I've been planning to source out the larger OE parts from the R32/TT so I could 3d-scan them, and replicate the larger opening, the larger pre-filter air snorkel parts, and the larger MAF housing opening and
    Now, a question or two:
Did you need to turn the ECU any for the larger/less restrictive intake? Or, does the MAF housing kept the same size keep the ECU thinking that not enough has changed?

I'm glad to hear they made it larger but it is still a restriction

oops, I see I left a thought unfinished: Re: 3D-scanning:
      I'd like to
      - get ahold of all those larger R32/"V6" TT intake parts
      - 3D-scan the different openings and larger diameter air pipes
      - 3D-print the different openings to retrofit our normie-sized air boxes or
      - Make templates to enlarge openings accurately across the "fleet" of mk4 cars I have
This idea/approach is due to me having a handful of TDI mk4 cars in the yard. Buying up all the larger than BEW "rare"/now-outta-production air intake parts for five cars would be prohibitively expensive. Plastic-welding/bonding an "exact" copy is more up my alley, both budget and DIY-ethos wise.

I see what your saying there are many 1.8t and vr6s in junk yards where you can get them very cheap I was given the advice to remove the snorkel by a rep at kermatdi.com and if anyone knows vw diesels it's those guys plus removing it will get you some induction noise if that's something you like

@@gearhead4266 I have a 170,000k 2001 beetle ALH. BRM intake - Malone adapter - EGR/ASV. I gutted the cat but left it on. Stage 1 EGR delete, snow screen removed, and now looking for a BEW intake pipe. I have the lift pump but haven't installed it and also looking to remove the EGR cooler.
