I was on both sides of the page for a long time. Now I believe that their is changing in the intensity of certain gifts. But they are all still in operation. The only scripture that cessasionists use to annul the giftings is 1 Corinthians 13. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. Them saying that the bible is that which is perfect, and that which is in part is the giftings. In my books that's a big stretch to make a conclusion based on that verse alone. My personal experience for what it's worth is, is the gifts are in opperation. Sure there are counterfeits, but that don't negate the legitimate.
I have never seen one incontrovertible miracle. Headaches and tummy aches aside! The ones in the bible all appear incontrovertible. The early post-apostolic church lamented the passing of the gifts with the passing of the apostles as well, which I find telling. In one sense all events are miracles. Is there some kind of middle ground or “reasonable cessationism” or “practical cessationism”? I agree with both to a point. Also I am trying to understand why no one seems to be taking into account the major differences between extraordinary providence, and continuationism.
What the Reform have done is trow out the baby out with the bath water and what the charismatic have done many times in history is trow out the baby with the Bible. So I’m a continuist with the Bible that left the charismatic circle to a FreeWill Baptist Church because charismatic became charismania. That being said I believe every page of the Bible and there’s not ONE single text that proves that the Gifts ceased. The one mostly used is The Perfect has come 1 Corinthians 13:10. If the Perfect has come - this world is pretty mess up and getting worst. That scripture is in the context of the gifts. Chapters 11-13.
As a believer in the continuing gifts of the holy spirit including speaking in tongues, I can honestly say that I am a lot more comfortable among the cessationist views held among the reformed, then I am with the cringe-worthy histrionic unlearned accusatory neurotic and generally ignorant and theologically destitute loudly shouted (even in tongues) opinions of Pelagius continually held forth in the Armenian views of so many Pentecostal charismatics today. Give me a break. I absolutely believe in Divine healing I have seen it and I pray in tongues between myself and the Lord for my own edification all day everyday. With this I am content to know that it is so. Strange. It seems to me that a lot of Cessationists, if you press them, will admit that God did these things in their lives, rarely. And usually when they were desperate, diligently seeking him for special, extra-biblical guidance. But then they proceed to bend over backwards to stress that it is not the norm, and that we should not make a habit of desperately seeking him for special extra-biblical guidance. Never considering, apparently, that perhaps if they did, these events would not be so rare and abnormal as they are for them. "Fervently desire spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy" (1 Cor 14:1). A command no Cessationist ever obeys.

Over the years I've heard many stories from the pulpit about how the speaker believed that God was leading in a certain way and it all worked out. I've also met people who believed God was working in a certain way and it did not work out. These people were shells of what they were before questioning their relationship to God. Without trying, I can think of four people that have shared their story with me. They don't proclaimed their stroy because they're embarrassed about it. The only reason they share their story at all is because they are seeking counsel. We should not believe that just because something is supernatural, it is of God. There are other supernatural forces at work. Typically, when people talk of being lead of the Lord, it's in a way that is not seen in the scripture at least not in the preaching that I've heard. It's normally just some feeling or impression like God wants you to do or not do something or just knowing something.

I just don't agree with these Calvinists. What they teach has not been my experience. Yes, on some thing we can agree. They negate some of the beauty of our faith and don't reflect the possibilities of an intimate relationship with God.
How do you mean “neglect the beauty of the faith”? I find God and the Holy Bible to be absolutely amazing and I consider myself a Calvinist and fan of Ligonier Ministries.
Exactly, Calvinism/Reformed teaching is also to rely fully on careful interpretation of scripture to drop human logics and experiences conflicting to it.
Cessationists are the ones that believe in cessationism that is the Apostolic gifts (instantaneous healing, miracle, prophesy and gift of tongues/language) of the Bible ceased to exist when apostles died and the canon (standard) of Scripture/Bible was completed...Paul healed and rose Eutychus who was completely dead and that is an apostolic gift... cessationists like me believe that today Scripture alone has the valid supreme infallible inerrent authority and Word of God over Christians and no other... whereas, continueists beleive that the apostolic gifts is still relevant and continues to work till date and they they come mostly under Evangelical penticostals, charismatic and NAR denominations...
May I suggest that’s an oversimplification… We should always pursue the application of the scriptures to our lives rather than trying to illegitimize our real and difficult conundrums with false dichotomies.

Cessationisim does not deny Providence of God. In fact Cessationist have a better understanding of God's Sovereignty and Providence which can include answers to Prayer, Healing Provision, and God's personal intervention in every day affairs of life.

I would love to see a true miracle.

@@J_a_s_o_n Yes, over the sea somewhere. I remember as a young new Christian in the 1980's a bunch of Christian doctors went to see some of these claims 'overseas' - Brazil from memory. They checked the claims and whenever they could actually trace out all the facts, every single one was a lie. Its the same claims and I find no reason to believe these same types of people. The lies I see on videos today tell me not to trust anything on video, to be honest. I haven't seen a true miracle in over 40 years now. I must have heard over a thousand claims and likely a lot more.
I was actually involved in one of these lies. I went up to a healing service, a rally that had a few thousand people in it. I was loaded up with my doctrine - never utter a bad confession. "By His stripes, we are healed"! I went up onto the stage with the famous preacher from the US for a bad knee and claimed my healing. He said God told him someone with a bad knee was out there, needing help. (whats the chance of someone in a huge crowd needing help for a bad knee?) He laid hands on me. I confessed my healing before the crowd who cheered and likely believed me, as I did a one legged squat on that bad knee. I was avery fit young man. My knee hurt, but I didn't waver. I was healed (no bad confession from this 'faith-filled" man). I told everybody there, 2,000 and likely a lot more - i was healed. As I went back to my seat, I felt 'high' it was a surreal feeling with the backslaps and congratulations, but my knee ached. No way would I say anything! A few weeks later I had an operation on that same knee. My knee still hurts and last year I had it replaced with a steel one. It was a lie then and nobody who filmed it would know. I grieve over that lie I hoped the doctrine was true and hope people did not believe me, but I know they likely did believe it. It was all captured on video.

So which Apostles were alive after Paul and the 11 died?
Then it no longer transcends words? Assuming it's a heavenly language that would make it heavenly words and words are words none the less.
@@Im_No_Expert_72 no it isn’t. Read your Bible and see... look up the Greek translation... Speaking in other tongues was literally speaking in existing languages to non-believers to spread the gospel. God also commanded we never do it all together in church, but rather one at a time, about 3 max and every word of it was to be interpreted. It never ever has been babbling in a nonsense language. That spirit the Pentecostals are entertaining is not the Holy Spirit, but a kundalini spirit. Look in to it, search your Bible. Read opposing views and let the Holy Spirit guide you to truth. See that I’m not lying to you, but telling you the truth out of love but also fear and trembling before my Lord. You should be terrified that your views are only 100 years old and can’t be backed up scripturally. I was raised a Pentecostal and when God showed me the truth... I was disgusted and horrified at what I had been doing. Run run run from apostasy. Agape!
If we ar truly God's children and want his will guide us by closing and opening doors. We dont have to beg him and asl for a sign.
Simply say if the Lord wills we will dk this or that. If a door opens and it's biblical and not sinful simply pray "God close this door if you dont want me to proceed"
Some here just confuses the classical cessationist's position with God's ability to do supernatural things through all the mankind history. Cessationist believes that apostolic kind of gifts has ceased, cause they served the purpose of confirming the NT revelation. And none of cessationists believe that God's power or ability to act in a supernatural way is ceased today. R.C. talks here about the second.

This is the working of the Holy Spirit, but it isn't the so-called 'gifts'. The Holy Spirit is our helper, and He helped. End of.
