In this video, Scott breaks down the 4 easy steps needed to GROWL ON THE SAX. As usual, Scott takes a simple step by step approach and breaks it down for so that anyone can understand the information. Growling is created by singing a raspy throat tone, while playing a pitch at the same time. Those two notes clash, and create this dissonant effect. Learn the 4 steps needed by watching the video.

It worked!
It feels way harder to add the growl when you play sequence of notes compare to add the growl on the starting note. I felt like the growl came more natural if i did a deep ”humming” sound though. But with this technique it felt more alive! Good work. I do study almost every video you post. Keep it up man! Cheers from sweden
Hey John! Yeah, it takes a little bit of practice to be able to keep the growl going when you switch notes, but once you get it down you'll be good to go! The humming is a bit easier, but the growl isn't as strong, and it is harder to relearn it with the raspy throat, so I always just start off with that technique.
I wanted to learn sax but instead learned metal screaming, great.
hahaha!
Me otherwise 😅
Both are great
😂😂
The two are not mutually exclusive as you can hear here
Scott: Growl into your sax.
Me: Growl.... Blow.... COUGH COUGH COUGH!
Dying goose: (Emerges from my sax)
Good lesson tho! :)
aflack. hahahaha.
Same here haha
METAL SCREECHING
Finally learned how to growl! This video was incredibly helpful and the best teaching I have found, thank you!
🦁🦁🦁 Congrats!
So tomorrow morning I’m soloing on tenor.... I REALLY hope I get can this down in an hour
Might take longer than an hour. Good luck!
Did you get it?
Potáto took me a few extra months, but can confirm I can now growl. Tho I havnt used it for any performance yet
Thatoneguy Mccool I’m proud good work. I’m still learning it and I’m not that good 😂
Ayy tenor gang!
I am also curently trying to learn how to growl
Thank you for flexing on my 13 year old self
Cadence Chambers Same with me
Just learned this and I’m 13 lol
14 yet?
@@isaacshleyf751 thx for rubbing it in
Hardest part for me is switching from “un-growled” notes to “growled” notes. I can mostly play a full major scale while growling, but I still can’t throw in a badass growl to end a blues line. I guess I gotta keep practicing. Anyways, thanks for the video 😀
That’s how we teach the R sound in French. Thanks Scott
I haven't played in forever, never learned growl in high school. I got a decent Alto now but I think I will wait a bit before training my growl. Thank you Scott.
Absolute perfect instruction. Well-broken down, got the growl out first try (then proceeded to lose it for the next few tries, but eh). Thanks so much!!!
Getting it on the first try is pretty impressive! This is one of those techniques that is a little tough to figure out at first because it is just such a weird throat movement.
@@ScottPaddock I think it's easier for Arabic speakers since that sound is used in the language. Thanks for your reply! I left a message on your improv video -- any chance we could get a call-response blues in all 12 keys?
@@ScottPaddock And thanks again for all the work you do!
Saxophone growl is so expressive and beautiful especially when used in the right moment. I never new it was so difficult and sophisticated to generate.
You said lower your tongue, and Bam! I know how to grow....tyvm kind sir
That definitely makes a difference!
Let me know if you were able to get your first successful growl after watching this video!
Scott Paddock I did! Cheers from Brazil
Of course I did!.. YOU taught me!.. Many thanks..top stuff again Scott..
Awesome!!! My mouthpiece is from Brazil :-)
Awesome!! Thanks.
very good
Thank you for sharing. God bless you!
Ben affleck in saxophone
Haha! Thanks
Totally 😂
lol
Played saxaphone for 13 pluss years..... Found this vidio and... My mind blew up. Well explained mate, with practice i have been able to get this down.
Another fantastic and really helpful lesson, thanks again Scott great.
Thank you so much for giving this information Scott Paddock
I cant WAIT to try it!!!!
Scott, you are OG. I appreciate your sharing!!
Thank you for sharing your expertise 🎷
this was soooo helpful I have been trying to learn this for the longest time thanks !!
Love this lesson! Way more advanced than I need as a beginner but I get bored sometimes with scales and long tones so this should be fun to try!
Have fun with it!
I know I’m 2 years late lol but thank you for this video. people kept telling me it’s in the throat but you helped me actually pinpoint where in the throat I needed to do it.
It worked! It freakin worked! Thank you! Harsch for the throat at first but it allowed me to understand what's going on!
I love how to-the-point and thorough you are with your explanations of even the toughest concepts. I also appreciate that you demonstrate each step as you're going through them, so as to give us a reference for what we should actually be trying to do at each step, rather than just verbal explanations.
Thanks Jesse!
Thank you so much! Watched a ton of different videos and figured out how to growl a bit, but it wasn't consistent. I had all the parts, but you really put them in the correct spots for me. Can't thank you enough, it's been bothering me for the past eight months that I couldn't growl
Works like a champ thanks! I followed u!
Cheers Scott, Great video.
Thank you for this tip. I like playing 50s rock n roll, and growling is always a big deal in tenor sax solos.
Outstanding explanation!
Thanks!!!
Like your staff, every bit of it, I have so far done my first three weeks of soprano saxophone practice with you right here on youtube.
👍👍👍
This is great. Definately worked
Thanks man, keep up the work!!!!
Yeaye! You are the first who makes me actualy growl! I watched a lot of growl tutorials for over a year. Thank you Scott. Yeah!!
But how do I get the high notes out? Notes stay in the middle range even with the octave key on.
Great tutorial, I've seen loads of descriptions of how to growl and this one worked almost immediately
👍👍👍
Scott, you are amazing with explanations.
Tried it first time and it worked in 5 min.
Thank you again so much!!!
Definitely one of the best saxophone learning channels on RUclips.
Thanks!!! Glad it worked for you 👍
You are a great teacher thanks
Thank you!!
You're a life changer
wooooow! thanks bro! ive been curious on how to do
this technique for a long time...

Oh my god! It worked! Thank you so much, man! You changed how I play!
Mr Paddock, you are a legend!!
Thanks for everything
Thanks!
Love this
I wanted to do the growl but couldn't do it for sooo long until I found this video, it worked in the first try, thank you so much! subscribed.
Awesome!!!
I noticed you mentioned the raspy voice whereas others just say sing a note other than the one you play..usual;ly lower...but also as I go low down towards the low D I finfd suddenly singing high makes the lower notes sound better...but not high...but you are the first to do all the raspy voice things...definitely interesting and working...thanks so much for this...
Thank you
thank you for this video
👍👍
Thank you for the video! I feel now that I will be able to do it. :D
Hey Nicola, it's all in the throat! Good luck with it.
Best tutorial!
Thank you!

This video was so helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I just got my first growl today!! I get what you mean, once you get over the comfort thing then it happens. Thank you so much!!
Rock on!
awesome i'm looking for 1st sax
Wow I wasn't prepare for that ! Just had to watch the first 5 minutes to be able to create my first ever growl sax :o Thank's a lot !
Congrats!!!!
You’ re great Scott!
Thank you!
I have done with in a month thanks a lot😎
surprisingly really helpful
😁
Thanks
Wow this is the first time I actually progress! Still not good but something's something!
always thumbs up
👍👍👍😊😊😊
Thank you much I think it worked it sounded jazzyer and honkyer
Wow ot worked our teacher tride to teach us a diff way but it was hard he is so impressed with me yay thanks
👍👍👍
Ok. Played since 6th grade .i am now 59. I play in a 10 piece 70s funk horn band. Shotgun and Tequila sound hollow without the growl. U just explained it for me. Thank u.
Good video! I've had a few tries with the humming technique but it just cuts off the air. This gargling approach makes much more sense and I used to do something similar on tin whistle to fake multiple tonguing.
Have tried this for months! This video finally made it "click" for me. I was basically mongolian throat singing into it before which made it sound like a fog horn.
This made me laugh out loud
This is my first subscription on RUclips. I wanted to say how Impressed I am with the tutorials. Great stuff. Do you produce online courses?
Thanks Lloyd! That is my plan for the near future.
Great👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I love the way you look and talk
I am going to try your method tomorrow morning.
Thank you 😁
Good stuff
😁😁
Great video. Matter of fact all your videos are very helpful. Kinda like a computer guy talking English instead of computer so everyone can understand...You're talking saxophone using English instead of saxophone. Very understandable and well thought out! Will consider Zoom or Skype for more info...on the tenor sax...perfect time to do it!
Nice job
Thanks!!!
bro cheers
Thank you soo much for helping me perfect this! You are awesome definitely subscribe if you haven’t and want to learn more on the saxophone
Thank you!!
Super video Scott and I've tried many without success , however your tips worked wonders . Can you suggest how often you should practice growling and would you recommend growling each day to improve it ? taking into account the effect it can have on your throat. I've failed to find an answer to this anywhere on the web.
Hey, once you've got the concept down, just try using it in songs. It's not something you need to practice on a regular basis. So I wouldn't recommend over practicing it.
thankyouu
You're welcome! Did it work for you?
It seems Earl Bostic did this through most of his tunes, even in his amazing altissimo lines.
I can’t remember his playing without the growl. Do you recall any other styles used by him. Did constant growl stop him from using other tones?
As a kid, 50+ years ago, When I heard him playing on recordings in his R and B style, I thought he was playing a Tenor! I was blown away at him playing that high on a tenor…. Now I’m blown away at his playing that high on his alto!
If anyone reads this I suggest you listen to his “Way Out There in Orbit”!
Hey Terry! Yeah, in early R&B the growl was a normal part of the sax sound. You hear it everywhere. Just checked out Up There In Orbit - he's killing it...bebop lines, overtones grooves, blues, scoops, altissimo acrobatics, and super chops. Thanks for sharing!
bloody guud show
👍
Thx dude, keep it up. Just subcribe ur channel. Good Job
Thanks!!
i used to be able to growl without much effort. then one day it just, stopped working. thanks :)
what is this beautiful song your playing at the intro of the video
Mongolian throat singers would approve this technique👍
My poor Hubby 's ears ! Thanks for the tips ! I will have a try
I have to work on going from clean note to growl note, I can start (poorly, but better than when I first practiced it) but I can’t do it in the middle of something.
Thanks, super helpful! :)
Umh, stupid question. Can this damage my voice?
Think your a pirate wrrr... LOL I love that sax player on Eddie and the Cruzer seem as he even sucking in some notes
So Good Scott, How long to Rasp if I practiced every day for half hour, approx ?
It really is quite easy although I find it takes a lot more energy (breath) to do and I can struggle keeping it up on long 'growling' passages eg, Still Rock & Roll to me Billy Joel.
yeah, the long growls are definitely harder.
you can test your sound with his at 4:38
🙏🏽
👍👍
Should I buy special mouthpiece for the sound?
🎷
Scott, I use the humming method and is sounds a little different. Do you think that your method is better than mine or is it opinion based?
Thanks a lot for your video!
is it normal to have some pain (not strong pain, but more like the sensation you've been breathing for long time just with your throat) after practising?
When my throat hurts from practicing it usually either a reed that is to strong or a leak in my sax. It is taking me more air and my throat isn't happy about it. It usually comes from pressure.
🙋🏻♂️What make is your saxophone ??? Thank you
Request tutorial song you are the reason
I watched many videos of growl on sax. I practiced a few days and it's really worked, but i have a question. I used to speak(?) in saxphone just like your video to make that growl sound happened but when people really make that growl sound, they really speak in saxphone just like the beginning ? Because I always heard my own voice, or it's just I doesn't practice enough?
Yeah, there is second sound that you might hear coming from the throat, but usually when you are growing the listener won't hear it as two separate sounds.
I can't get enough air going to make a sound while growling, any tips?
I was always told to hum when playing and it makes the grawl sound.
Yeah, that can work too, but if you use the gargle technique it gives you a stronger growl and more control.
