  • This unusual swing bridge over the Union Canal near Falkirk was built by Sir William Arroll and Co. prior to WWI when the Westquarter Chemical Works here produced 17 million detonators as a vital part of the WWI arms manufacture. The explosive content was made on nearby Redding Moor and taken here over the swing bridge by lorry. The works have long been closed and the bridge abandoned.
