The Hauntings of the Joshua Ward House

- Salem Massachusetts is quite possibly the most haunted city in the world. A house built in the 1700's stands on the foundation of the Salem Witch Trials High Sheriff, George Corwin. Corwin's brutality in torturing accused witches is legendary. It seems his spirit and the spirits of some of his victims haunt the Ward house to this very day.

Love this channel bringing in curious history and spooky history. Very well done guys and thank you.
Thank you Retired FireFighter! We appreciate the love and support! 😊😊
I knew of Corey's brave stand to save his property for his heirs, I did not know that it took two days. A brave man.
Indeed Elizabeth!
Thank you for telling this important story. The paternal side of my family (yes, I'm mixed-blood) is descended of Rebecca Nurse. (Yes, I know, the spelling of the last name is different, but she signed her name 16 times on the court records, each time with a different spelling, and our branch of the family got stuck with this one. It used to be considered a sign of literacy to be able to spell the same thing different ways, and she was proud of her education.)
I could see a female victim wanting revenge by strangling. Most people assume that the hangings happened in gallows, because of a famous etching by somebody who wasn't there, but in fact the victims were hanged from a tree above an embankment, and there wasn't enough of a drop to break the neck, so the victims strangled slowly to death. Members of the family would leap onto the dangling body to add their weight and hopefully speed the strangulation up, ending the torture--a horrible trauma for anybody forced to help kill their loved one!
This may be why Corwin was called "The Strangler". You know, he could have built a gallows. It's not like Salem Village lacked for wood.
Awesome info Dolores! I think it’s awesome you are a descendant of the Nurse family.
Thank you for sharing! 😊😊😊
I was born in Beverly, Mass which is a city next door to Salem. In the mid 70s I lived in Salem. That was on Proctor St. ( a one way st) I used to walk my dog in Gallows Hill Park which was very close. The apt house was the first building on the left due to the rocky ledge heading up off Boston St. I was pleasantly surprised to find the original hanging site was through the woods, right next to my apt, heading towards Boston St. So extremely close to where I once lived!
Suffice to say, I and my friends wandered all over Salem back then. I've visited many cemeteries there and been friends with many witches and warlocks too. They were featured on a 1980s national Geographic Cover.
Giles Cory was a British citizen who refused to be prosecuted under the laws in America. To his dying breath he refused to confess because all his property would be seized and he wanted his wife and family to retain it. They did.
Rebecca Nurse's body was taken back to the family farm in Danvers and buried in an unmarked grave due to fear she would be exhumed. Here is an article about the body of George Corwin which matches the truth told about him in Salem: www.newenglandhistoricalsociety.com/dirty-laundry-and-a-friend-save-philip-english-from-the-salem-witch-trials/
There is a book called "The Rye Bread Witches" that goes into details about the weather back then. Rye was the major grain crop. The flour being used in breads and cakes, etc. The slave Tituba made the accusing girls cake made from rye flour. Rye is prone to a blight in wet growing seasons called ergot. Lysergic acid diethylamide was derived from ergot.
Never heard of that before? Well you have perhaps heard of it's street name back in the day. LSD-25. Can it be all those accusing girls and their hallucinations were caused by ingesting blighted rye? I really think so.
Thank you for this Rags 2itches! Awesome info!! Love it!! 😊😊😊
I love your haunted videos, I'm 65 and my grandma and aunt lived in a country home ,no TV ,no radios. And once a week we would have a seance with a horn in the middle of the table. I would never call on the dead now but as a kid in 1965 we had some spooky but fun times. Hope you make more paranormal videos in the future because you do a great job telling a story.
Wow, what a cruel era to live in! Having a lifelong interest in natural remedies I too would have been called a 'witch', and my life probably would have been cut short because of it. A gruesome story, and you tell it so well! Your presentation is excellent and draws me in! Thank you for taking the time to do these awesome video's, we appreciate it!
Thank you Kiwi! 😊😊😊😊😊
Interesting side note on the Corey story, one version of the story has him cursing Corwin after he forced his tongue back in, supposedly cursing anyone who takes the mantle of Sherriff of Salem. True to form, most, if not all Sheriffs of Salem have died of heart problems ever since.
Awesome info! 😊😊😊
A great video, and a very warm welcome to the new cinematography and audio tech. It's a great upgrade for the channel!
Doc Holiday: Yes, this was a big step up from previous videos, not that there were any issues with those.
Thanks Doc. We are trying for sure!
New subscriber here, love this channel. Thank you for bringing history to life.
Thank you for subscribing Kim! Welcome to the community! I am so happy you are here! 😊😊😊
Love this story! I have heard of the Joshua Ward house before on other shows of tales of the paranormal. In one of those shows, there was an interview with a man that had been Sheriff of Salem and he tells of weird experiences and having to quit working as sheriff due to a series of health issues that only began AFTER he became sheriff. He did say that before being sheriff he had been a huge skeptic, but became a believer that there are things that just can’t be explained away after everything he went through. I think it’s called “America’s Haunted Houses”, and I have it on VHS (yeah, it’s that old).
That’s awesome Me Me! It must be tough to be Sheriff in Salem given the title’s history. I’m sure the spirits have a problem with it!
Thank you for sharing this! 😊😊😊
Was just visiting Salem mass a wk ago very interesting and historic place loved every minute of it.
I’m Jealous Jeffery! 😊😊😊

Thank you Betty! Love having you in our community! 😊😊😊
Thanks for another great video. Those poor people.
Thank you Spirit! 😊😊😊
Thank you for another paranormal history.
Goosebumps! The music too is something that takes us back to that accursed past.
You have created a perfect aura for this type of paranormal history.
George Corwin is a perfect testimony of a fallen man. When a man falls he get couple of things in his heart that he cannot remove in his life time. He cannot release all his ill consciousness and becomes stuck. In death
the body vanishes but not the will that has wishes and hopes yet to be fulfilled.
Strong desires yet to be released! A yarn to be free and get unstuck from the pain they have suffered unto their deaths.
Perhaps for this! Perhaps for this they come again and again.
Thank you John for your nice presentation!
A chapter worthy to note and remember!
It is definitely from a glorious page of history that has some lessons for the men to learn!
To the men who are here now, surviving and fully awake!
Have a nice and warm day, John!
.
Thank you Raju!
Be well my friend and thank you for another fantastic comment!
Oh I think he is still in the spirit form in that house.
Beautiful old house and so much history! Salem is such a beautiful historical town! You do such a wonderful job telling these stories! Thank you,,,, Patricia Gambino Harrington
Thank you Patricia! Glad you enjoyed it! 😊😊😊
Toto bylo velmi zajímavé video. Děkujeme, že jste se s námi podělili. ^^
I went to Salem last year for my birthday. Then it was a private residence. Has that changed now? Being in Salem made my soul so happy to be there. Don't know why.
Yep the Ward House is now a bed and breakfast.
I lived in Salem for 43 years. Just 3 blocks from there.
Sounds like an excellent life to me! Anything spooky occur when you lived there MrDoeboy356?
@@CuriousHistoryYT I could tell you lots of stories for sure.
Another awesome video! I love how you present the story it’s perfectly told . Beautiful house. Thanks Buddy!!!
Thanks Jerry! 😊😊
Interesting as always 🤗💞
This is definitely one of my favorite videos you have done, but it is tough, as I love them all. You are a gifted storyteller beyond a shadow of a doubt. Keep up the great work, my friend. God bless you and your family.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I absolutely love the background 🧡🍁❤
😊😊😊
Outstanding!
I have no doubt the house and land is haunted. love this time of year. Spooky Time!.... RIP to all who were falsely accused.
🙏🙏🙏
Excellent topic really enjoyed watching keep up the brilliant work 👌
Thank you Kim! 😊😊😊
Awesome video! Love your channel
Thank you Vivek! 😊😊😊
Amazing video like always 😊
Thank you Edith! 😊
Corey was not giving up his property. Horrible times. Just sickening.
I agree Barb. Sickening is a perfect word to describe it.
Ennjoyed much, remember besides poor Giles who was pressed to death all the others were strangled, as none were hanged in the traditional manner, no drop just a kick out of whatever they were standing on, poor things!
So very true Dan. Hangings in Salem had nothing to do with breaking the neck. Very barbaric! Many were simply rotated off the ladder.
Thank you for watching and commenting! 😊😊😊
I just found your channel and I am binging on your videos you tell a story so well ..

I appreciate your kind words Thom! Thank you! 😊😊😊
Wow John what a great story I'll tell ya you really had to watch your P's and Q's back in those days saying the wrong thing you could be accused of being a witch or practicing witchcraft. Thanks for telling it I certainly do appreciate it and the hard work putting it all together for us Happy New Year to you and your family may it be a blessed one
Thank you Thom! Happy New Year!
Great introduction with the red lighting. Great spooky feeling. Good story. What a way to die being crushed. Looking forward for more. Take care.
Thank you Edward! 😊😊😊
330 years ago today.
RIP Giles Corey.
🙏🙏🙏
Good afternoon to you. This was a really fascinating video, and the cinematography is beautiful. That is a handsome building and the land has a gruesome history.
My nan had a great aunt who was called a witch, she was a 'wise woman'. She lived alone and was very knowledgeable about natural remedies (at a time when people couldn't afford to pay a doctor, latter half of the 19th C to early 20th C). She also acted as a midwife for the local women, best regards to you and your family.
Thank you Dawn! 😊😊😊
I absolutely love Salem . I love how every building is haunted
😊😊😊
I just discovered your channel, and I must say that I am most impressed by the well-made, professional content in your video uploads. Will you be covering the Peyton Randolph house, the John Burrows mansion, and the West over plantation in future videos? ^^
Thank you for this! I can tell you that there are more Salem videos ready to be filmed for sure! 😉
It's my pleasure. You are such a lovely family, I wish you success with your channel, and for your future story adventures wherever they may take you. Sending you hugs and rainbows, from Léa 💕^^
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love the spooky, hope theres more for halloween!!
Much more Tanette! 😊😊😊
Yyyeeesss!!
🤣🤣🤣
That was a great video! I love the effects and how you presented it! Salem is an amazing place, rich in history as well as the supernatural. I was at the Jonathan Corwin House/or the Witch House where they held the trials. When you tour the house you learn not only about the Witch trials, but you also learn about the construction of the homes and the matrials used and can even view it through an exposed cross section of the wall. They also teach you the culture and lifestyle, and the preparation of foods using the great hearth in the kitchen. There is so much to learn in Salem. Thank you for our walk through history!
Thank you for this Loriann! I am jealous! I can’t wait to visit Salem in person one day! 😊😊😊
@@CuriousHistoryYT oh I hope you get to visit very soon. You will not be disappointed and believe me, give yourself a week because there is so much to see and do. I remember the police officers have a Witch on a broom on their uniform patch. I did a double take in amusement the first time I saw it. I like to haunt cemeteries, because the old tombstones were works of art and would provide you with a mini biography about the person who is buried there. In Boston, and Salem, the cemeteries located in the center of each city are incredible and date back to the 1600's. I wish you a trip to Salem soon!
You and I must be kindred spirits Loriann! 😊😊😊
@@CuriousHistoryYT We just may be! Who knows, one day I may run into you on as we just so happen to take the same walk through history! 😀😀😀
😊😊😊
I dont normally comment but this time I feel I must great job and lo e this channel
Thank you so much Wendy! 😊❤️😊❤️
Giles Cory also cursed the town and the sheriff of Salem . before he died.
There is a photo taken I think in the Joshua Ward house of a ghostly woman with wild hair.Part of her face ,the lower half looks like a skull.
you had me at pressed to death nice job thank you
Thanks Howard! 😊😊😊
id be scared driving past that place during the day
Me too! 🤣🤣🤣
Very interesting 🤔
😊😊😊
Nice job ! You’re branching out to a new state. I like your background setting with the spooky candles.
Thanks Julie! Yep we are testing the waters for sure!
If Corwin's ghost is haunting the Joshua Ward house, it has an evil spirit and should be exorcized with sage and prayers.
I absolutely agree. I’ve been there and there are good spirits there too but way way way more evil presence and it’s so powerful I think the guests are feeding it energy. I
Good job as usual more interesting history are you guys branching out more into the ghosties and things that go bump in the night saw you are planning on another live stream maybe you can make me a believer I do believe in demons they are all too real but not so much in ghosts but do try to keep an open mind Thanks again for another great video
Thank you Randy! Whether you believe in ghosts or not we love having you in our community!
Hopefully the planned livestream will be worth the watch. You never can tell with live video though.
Thanks again for all your support! 😊
Some may escape their punishment in this life, but each of us will have to give accountability in the next.
So true!
The execution of Corey was particularly brutal, but I seem to recall it was believed that Corey's vengeful ghost killed Corwin, and continued to kill his Male descendants. Or am I confusing that with another?
That may be true Denise. Although I heard it was Jonathan Corwins family instead of George’s. Certainly possible though.
Best paranormal investigation book it's called Haunted Happenings by Robert Cahill
"I cursed the sheriff, but I did not curse the deputy..."
Makes me want to torment Corwin's spirit until he confesses and begs forgiveness, then banish him to hell. Merch shop link doesn't work for me by the way.

Try this link to our linktree. Let me know how it works. I will check things on this end! Thanks!
He will physically make you sick. I think he obtained power from torturing the women and getting them to praise satan or whatever, he like kidnapped their souls. Sounds weird and probably makes me look like a loony.
If you confessed, the church got your property.
So it's the evil sheriff that's haunted, not the actual house and location as my findings concur.
I dare you to stay there one night. Go ahead and find out. You might hear horses in the halls, boots, feel eeeery
10:24 I vote ghost. 👻
I second that vote Pheona!
The brain is a powerful organ.
Indeed!
All due to greed and attention seeking...so sad
I won’t want to live in that house
Me neither Sherry!
I think that this current of lies and falsehoods has always existed in the country, and remarkably in red states.
Salem witch trials humanity was so superstitious dumb and cruel back then.
Amen!
