Sad story. But today's society breeds thousands of highway bandits. Many of them don't even have to leave home to rob people's money or ID. It's to bad the state wouldn't try to recover the dead and give them a proper burial. Thanks John and family. ..

It’s amazing how they worked the locks on the canal. And most locks weren’t run by anyone. The canal boat captain and his team would work it themselves!

Good evening to you, another interesting video about canal history. Not too far from me, at a place called Audlem, its on the Shropshire Union canal, is a beautiful place with a flight of 15 locks. About 5years ago there was a huge renovation project to repair brickwork etc. The height difference from the start of the flight to the end is just over 90feet. I'm lucky to have miles of beautiful canals on my doorstep, best regards.

@@CuriousHistoryYT A lot of the work is done by The Canal and River Trust. They are a registered charity. A lot of people volunteer with them, doing anything from litter picking along towpaths to masonry work etc. It's a really great way for locals to feel involved with their community and benefits everyone in the long term. A lot of abandoned railway lines have also been restored in a similar way, with trains / lines being restored, and now running for tourists, again most of those involved are volunteers, best regards.
So much here to tie in to. I grew up beside the Trent & Mersey Canal in central Staffordshire, which has a story of its own. A young woman passenger on a Pickford's fly boat was raped and murdered by the drunken crew at Pasturefields, Great Haywood. Her body was dumped in the cut, and discovered at Rugeley, about four miles down the line. Carried up the waterman's steps to a local pub for the inquest, her corpse allegedly dripped bloodstains which cannot ever be erased. She was laid to rest in St Augustine's Churchyard, in Rugeley, near to two victims - the first recognised, and the last, of 'Saintly Billy Palmer the Poisoner, the town doctor. Ironically, her story inspired an Inspector Morse novel, "The Wench is Dead". Burials 'on the job' so to speak don't seem too uncommon in the 1800's - there's a similar workmen's graveyard beside one of your major New England railroads, housing men who died of cholera, and memorials to men killed building the railways turn up over here quite often. How many canals were built in America? We don't hear much about them here in Limeyland - I think I only know of a couple of them.
Great stuff John! I’m not sure how many were built. I will need to look into it. Growing up on the west coast of the US we were only taught about the Erie Canal which kind of represented all canals that were built here. Of course I know that was only one of several. Rugeley sure has a gruesome history of its own, what with Dr Palmer and the long mining history. Glad to see you are familiar with Staffordshire (I just replied to your reply under my comment). Do you know that the A460 between Rugeley and Hednesford is haunted? I got hit by a deer there twice - at exactly the same spot, just outside Rugeley!!! Twice, years apart (I used to work in Hednesford)! Both times, the deer disappeared despite it having been a massive crash. I recently learned that apparently there is a history of that on that stretch of road. Saying that, you probably know that the whole of Cannock Chase is said to be home to werewolves, Bigfoot, black eyed children and all sorts. I never saw anything when I drove through there to work every day (at all hours, I was working shifts) but the deer thing seemed a bit strange. My city is haunted too, it's very old and the English Civil War raged here, there's tales of tunnels between the cathedral and the surrounding bishop's palaces that caved in and are haunted now and all sorts. A Roman army is said to go round Gaia Lane, though I've heard two versions - one that it's a Roman army, the other that it's a Civil War army. When I first moved here I went on a ghost tour and also read up on it, literally every part of the city has had reports of spectres at some point (especially the pubs but that might be due to the liquid kind of spirits, lol). I think where I live there must be something too because there's a history of extreme bad luck, unexplained deaths and murders around the junction where I live, but the road only got built in the 1940's. Unfortunately I cannot find out anything about the history of my street (because it didn't exist before the war) even though there's plenty of literature about the whole city (don't want to publicly mention where I live but if you know the area, you know which city it is). These hastily thrown up graves for workers, terrible as it seems to us nowadays, are still being done - here in the UK at least: if a poor person with no next of kin dies, the person gets thrown into an unmarked mass grave at best (pauper's grave or public health funeral) or at worst cremated and I suppose the ashes thrown out with the garbage. Respect is only for those that have money, if you happen not to be part of that club then you are considered worthless. Sadly England has a long tradition of this way of thinking (the class system). I encounter it every day and the - false - assumptions that people make about me or others, range from the ludicrous to the insulting. Fascinating to come across someone who knows Staffs and Birmingham and that on this channel!
Thank you for your comments on my last reply! I thought I would list some more things locally that I know about. Let me state a few things up front. A)I have not yet watched all of the videos, so theoretically, I could mention something already covered. B) I am not sure if any of the following are as "in tune" with what you and your "crew" are doing in this channel. C) I don't know if any of these have enough of an interesting history to do a videography on. With that said, I think that (as others have noted), I could probably have you video something about a tin can found on your Valley journys and you could keep people reasonably entertained! A) Worden's Ledges: Hinckley B) The missing sections/abadonment of parts of Stone Rd (Independence) and Fitzwater Rd (Brecksville) C) The former missile bases around Cleveland, more particularly the one that was in the Garfield Heights/Independence area (part of the complex still exists in Garfield Heights) D) The Jaite Paper Mill: Brecksville E) The multiple similar looking houses in the Valley, which are near Riverview and Vaughn Rd. (I think) F) The old house at Canal and Hillside Rd. which is now "The Canal Exploration Center", I think right by a lock. I BELIEVE that this is the one that I have seen for many years and have in my mind. G) Wilson Feed Mill: Valley View? H) The History of the area (businesses) that were once where Lock 3 is now in Akron I) The area near Wolf Ledges/Akron U. which I heard rumor that was once ravines/valleys that were filled in.

I discovered your channel a couple of days ago and have been watching through your videos. It's great to you showing your local history and seeing how many interesting stories you have there, and in such a relatively short time your nation and state have existed. It's fascinating. Here in Castell-Nedd (Wales/Cymru) we have thousands of years of history, but so much gets lost over time. Please keep up the good work with your channel. It's a great way to pass on the knowledge to new generations locally, and to interested people around the world.
I love your channel so much - it has awakened a love of history in me that I have long forgotten and taken me on such an adventure. Your narration is so interesting - reminds me of Tolkien. I loved to talk history with my Grandfather, who died five years ago, and I just lost my Grandmother, who was always telling me stories like this, in March. This is so sad that this murder victim is still trapped there, in the same area as her murderer who haunts the place for different reasons (and no doubt plagued by terrible demons), but it's amazing that she makes sure anyone who is near the lock after dark is safe. Canals do seem to bring out the worst in already evil people. Here in the UK, in a city called Manchester there are also lots of canals and for many years now there are constantly young men getting killed around there. Only young men for some reason. It's been going on for some time now, I think about ten years or so. It's only happening in Manchester - I live not too far from Birmingham where there's also a lot of canals and I haven't heard of this happening there, nor in my city which also has some canals. Saying that though, many years ago I had a work colleague that suddenly disappeared. After some time, his body was recovered from one of the canals in Birmingham. If I remember right, they also recovered his bike. Folks at work started to assume suicide, saying he had a difficult childhood, but I doubt this because in my line of work, one gets vetted very strictly for any sign of mental instability (similar to pilots). I also doubt very much that a person who plans on committing suicide would drive into a canal with his bike! Very sad, all these tragedies. The Earth is now so old that it's full of all the energy of past tragedies and sad events. The pain lingers on long after the event has passed and is all but forgotten. Given the state the world is in now, there will be tons more hauntings in years to come... You sure present your videos beautifully. I hope that this poor murder victim can find peace soon - and that the murderer, and all wrongdoers, get what they deserve!

@@CuriousHistoryYT It has a long history because the canals were the highways of their day, especially before the railroad came along. Nowadays of course the canals are not used to transport goods any more but some folks live on narrowboats. Yup it's a shame what's happening in Manchester, all sorts of theories have been brought up but because the murderer has never been caught, more recently even supernatural explanations have been suggested. For a few years the murders stopped (maybe the killer was in prison?) but then started up again. One guy who survived reported having been thrown into the canal on purpose, and many of the bodies recovered had injuries that matched having been thrown, but the question was then posed why don't the victims swim to safety. Well, the survivor said he managed to get to the side of the canal and called for help but whatever it was, threw him back right into the water! There are security cameras but nothing has ever been captured, it's as if whatever creature is doing this knows how to avoid cameras or ever being spotted. It does sound supernatural...
@@johndavies1090 Ah very interesting, yes a lot of folks used to do that years ago from what I've heard. Do you still remember Victoria Square being open to road traffic? I think it was in the early 90's that they made it for pedestrians only. They rebuilt the whole area again over the last few years, the library is gone and has been replaced by this horrible modern thing on Centenary Square. They spent millions on it only to close it to the public when the scamdemic started! I studied at the Brassouse Language Center which is now located in the library until they closed it all and made courses online. So all the millions were wasted! That's where your council tax goes... Reminds me, do you remember Sheepcote Street when the Brasshouse Language Center was located there, near the junction with Broad Street? The Progressive Synagogue was located opposite the Brasshouse. I used to attend that synagogue for services but didn't like the Rabbi so I stopped going, lol. They sold the land years ago and the synagogue moved, no idea where it is now. But I miss the Brasshouse, the building was perfect for a language school (I've studied various languages there since 1997). Apparently, the building used to be the waterboard. It's a shame that they sold that off too for "redevelopment", most likely to be turned into luxury apartments. When the Brasshouse moved into the library and I started a new course there, in 2019, I was shocked - suddenly we students needed security passes and there were security guards that checked every person going up the escalator - it was like Fort Knox! I hated it, but then the courses went online which was even worse, eventually my course got canceled off altogether so I have to self study now. They used to teach a lot more languages than they offer now. And New Street station got rebuilt in 2015 - such a shame, it's a nightmare now! Total nightmare! I should be working now at Centenary Square but got very sick last year so haven't been into Birmingham since December 2021, I'm sure it changes every day - for the worse. From what I've heard from old people, Birmingham used to be a fine city but it sure isn't now, anyone who can get out moves out. Spoke to a chap from Tamworth not long ago, he said he lived all his life in Brum but moved away as it's such a violent city now. I'm not from Birmingham myself, used to live near Sutton Coldfield in the 90's but then moved, I'm now between Birmingham and Derby (South Staffs).
Or an inside job. Cameras are everywhere. Imagine having knowledge of where the cameras aren’t! I don’t discount the supernatural however. Maybe something is protecting what it believes to be theirs!

In early 84 family moved to Sagamore right up the hill from Dover Lake/Brandywine. We had the bike train right behind our house and the whole Cuyahoga Valley to explore and play in. It was great getting to discover and see so many things hidden in the over growth. Got to experience a lot of it before the parks came in and cleaned everything up.

I don't know if there are any worthwhile stories to be told, but I always used to hear about "The Witch's Ball" at Myrtle Hill Cemetary in Brunswick, and Rogue's Hollow near Doylestown, where "Cry Baby Bridge" is found.

Yes, he was a worker for the railroad. He carries a lantern with him. I was 12 the first time, then went back with friends when I was 25. The tracks are gone now. Almost 60 now, still would like to go back one day. 👋

I do believe this account. Thank you for sharing it. I never doubt these anymore since my experiences many years ago. I’d rather not say where it all took place as the area is a small town, yet well known. 2 accounts: The First: While in Junior High my friend and her family lived in a house where the allegedly son killed his mother, but the way he did it left enough doubt for him to not be charged with the crime. He owed her much money, a real deadbeat apparently, and he lived with his mom. She was tired of his mooching off of her and not having a job, so she finally told him he would have to leave. Soon after she was found dead in the bathroom, where she seemed to have fallen and struck her head, killing her. Thing is the injury could have been made by a blow to the head as well, but nonetheless it left plenty of doubt either way so the son never was charged. Years later strange hauntings and events were known to occur in the home, and no one lived there for very long. When I stayed all night my friend told me this story. A painting on the wall had eyes that seemed to move and follow you wherever you walked in the room where it hung. A man’s voice would call out a person’s name when they were upstairs, especially when alone in the house. Water would be heard running in the bathroom tub, and when checked there would be no water running. Also, a young bride on her wedding day who lived in the house many years ago tripped going down the stairs in her wedding dress on her way to go get married, and she broke her neck, died instantly. She was seen going down the steps often. While there we had settled into bed, and we heard strange scraping sounds under the bed. We both looked over the side of the bed to see a soft green glow coming from under the bed. We looked under it and saw all these patches and splashes of glowing green across the floor! We earlier swept the floors well, and even under her bed. Her brothers were not home to play tricks on us. They were staying with friends. Her parents were at a business meeting and were coming home late. They left us a list of chores to do, but also left us some great snacks to eat, so we had looked forward to the evening. When we were done we settled into the living room to watch tv, but we just felt so uneasy that we decided to just go to bed, where we sat up talking until late and then turned out the lights to go to sleep. That’s when we saw the glow under the bed. Earlier I had heard a man call out my name from downstairs and heard heavy footsteps on the steps. I looked to see who it was, no one was there. My friend was also in the kitchen busy, so she wasn’t around there to play a trick on me. I had to slam the door shut to make the spirit stop saying my name. Then I heard my friend call up to me to see if I was okay. I opened the door to see her worried look on her face. I was fine, but it was a scary experience, and I never expected to have it. Never stayed all night there again. Second Account: Same town mind you. This was when I was in high school, and I stayed with another friend for the night. We had settled in to get some sleep, and I was about to doze off when I heard this blood hurdling scream of a woman in the night. I sat straight up in the bed I was in scared half out of my wits! I asked if she heard it. She said yes I wanted to call the police, but she said it wouldn’t do any good since it was a full moon it was the ghost of the woman who had been murdered by her husband. He wanted a divorce, she didn’t want to give him one because she loved him and believed they could work things out. He came home one night and brutally beat her, then while still alive he took her into the dining room, turned on all the lights, then hung her from the chandelier she loved so much which hung over their dining room table. She would often turn it on and leave it on all night to be seen by those driving by at night through the huge floor to ceiling window in the dining room. On the night she was hung people would drive by and see her lifeless body hanging from the chandelier through the well lit window. When several people got home they called the police. They checked it out, thinking it would either be a sick prank or that she had committed suicide. When they saw her and the condition she was in they knew he had beaten her and then hung her till dead. From what I was told they never did find him either. He left after that to never be seen again. But every full moon on its first night her screams were heard all over the area. Just one fear shattering scream. They had ministers come in to pray, and a priest to bless the home, but it still continued. No one would buy the home, and the electric was off to the place. But when she was heard screaming if a person dared to look out the window they would see the place was all lit up with lights and her hanging from the chandelier that was still there. My friend looked out the window and said it was all lit at the place. She tried to get me to peek, but I was having nothing to do with that. Soon after the fire department conducted a training event in the home, and burned it to the ground. Then they had the ground salted with white salt. Screams were still heard. So, they went back in and salted with black salt, and that was said to have stopped the screams from being heard again. The corner where the house once stood sat empty for many years after. I’d get gas in my car at the gas station across the street, and as you pumped the gas in one had to stand facing that piece of land. It always sent cold shivers through me, and I tried not to pump gas there, but sometimes it was inevitable. A few years back a bank bought the property and built on the land. I always wondered if strange things occurred in that bank. I just know I’d never bank there nor work there. So indeed I do believe these things occur. Residual haunts or intelligent I can’t say, but they do happen. The other home was also finally torn down as well. No one wanted it.

Had my friends told me about those events happening over and over again I would never had stayed over night with them to be honest. I think when a tragic death occurs some mark is left behind, and it leaves a possibility for it to replay in unusual ways. Good evening to you, another interesting video about canal history. Not too far from me, at a place called Audlem, its on the Shropshire Union canal, is a beautiful place with a flight of 15 locks. About 5years ago there was a huge renovation project to repair brickwork etc. The height difference from the start of the flight to the end is just over 90feet. I'm lucky to have miles of beautiful canals on my doorstep, best regards.

@@CuriousHistoryYT A lot of the work is done by The Canal and River Trust. They are a registered charity. A lot of people volunteer with them, doing anything from litter picking along towpaths to masonry work etc. It's a really great way for locals to feel involved with their community and benefits everyone in the long term. A lot of abandoned railway lines have also been restored in a similar way, with trains / lines being restored, and now running for tourists, again most of those involved are volunteers, best regards.

So much here to tie in to. I grew up beside the Trent & Mersey Canal in central Staffordshire, which has a story of its own. A young woman passenger on a Pickford's fly boat was raped and murdered by the drunken crew at Pasturefields, Great Haywood. Her body was dumped in the cut, and discovered at Rugeley, about four miles down the line. Carried up the waterman's steps to a local pub for the inquest, her corpse allegedly dripped bloodstains which cannot ever be erased. She was laid to rest in St Augustine's Churchyard, in Rugeley, near to two victims - the first recognised, and the last, of 'Saintly Billy Palmer the Poisoner, the town doctor. Ironically, her story inspired an Inspector Morse novel, "The Wench is Dead".
Burials 'on the job' so to speak don't seem too uncommon in the 1800's - there's a similar workmen's graveyard beside one of your major New England railroads, housing men who died of cholera, and memorials to men killed building the railways turn up over here quite often.
How many canals were built in America? We don't hear much about them here in Limeyland - I think I only know of a couple of them.

I’m not sure how many were built. I will need to look into it. Growing up on the west coast of the US we were only taught about the Erie Canal which kind of represented all canals that were built here. Of course I know that was only one of several.

Rugeley sure has a gruesome history of its own, what with Dr Palmer and the long mining history. Glad to see you are familiar with Staffordshire (I just replied to your reply under my comment).
Do you know that the A460 between Rugeley and Hednesford is haunted? I got hit by a deer there twice - at exactly the same spot, just outside Rugeley!!! Twice, years apart (I used to work in Hednesford)! Both times, the deer disappeared despite it having been a massive crash. I recently learned that apparently there is a history of that on that stretch of road. Saying that, you probably know that the whole of Cannock Chase is said to be home to werewolves, Bigfoot, black eyed children and all sorts. I never saw anything when I drove through there to work every day (at all hours, I was working shifts) but the deer thing seemed a bit strange.
My city is haunted too, it's very old and the English Civil War raged here, there's tales of tunnels between the cathedral and the surrounding bishop's palaces that caved in and are haunted now and all sorts. A Roman army is said to go round Gaia Lane, though I've heard two versions - one that it's a Roman army, the other that it's a Civil War army. When I first moved here I went on a ghost tour and also read up on it, literally every part of the city has had reports of spectres at some point (especially the pubs but that might be due to the liquid kind of spirits, lol). I think where I live there must be something too because there's a history of extreme bad luck, unexplained deaths and murders around the junction where I live, but the road only got built in the 1940's. Unfortunately I cannot find out anything about the history of my street (because it didn't exist before the war) even though there's plenty of literature about the whole city (don't want to publicly mention where I live but if you know the area, you know which city it is).
These hastily thrown up graves for workers, terrible as it seems to us nowadays, are still being done - here in the UK at least: if a poor person with no next of kin dies, the person gets thrown into an unmarked mass grave at best (pauper's grave or public health funeral) or at worst cremated and I suppose the ashes thrown out with the garbage. Respect is only for those that have money, if you happen not to be part of that club then you are considered worthless. Sadly England has a long tradition of this way of thinking (the class system). I encounter it every day and the - false - assumptions that people make about me or others, range from the ludicrous to the insulting.
Fascinating to come across someone who knows Staffs and Birmingham and that on this channel!
Thank you for your comments on my last reply! I thought I would list some more things locally that I know about. Let me state a few things up front. A)I have not yet watched all of the videos, so theoretically, I could mention something already covered. B) I am not sure if any of the following are as "in tune" with what you and your "crew" are doing in this channel. C) I don't know if any of these have enough of an interesting history to do a videography on. With that said, I think that (as others have noted), I could probably have you video something about a tin can found on your Valley journys and you could keep people reasonably entertained!
A) Worden's Ledges: Hinckley
B) The missing sections/abadonment of parts of Stone Rd (Independence) and Fitzwater Rd (Brecksville)
C) The former missile bases around Cleveland, more particularly the one that was in the Garfield Heights/Independence area (part of the complex still exists in Garfield Heights)
D) The Jaite Paper Mill: Brecksville
E) The multiple similar looking houses in the Valley, which are near Riverview and Vaughn Rd. (I think)
F) The old house at Canal and Hillside Rd. which is now "The Canal Exploration Center", I think right by a lock. I BELIEVE that this is the one that I have seen for many years and have in my mind.
G) Wilson Feed Mill: Valley View?
H) The History of the area (businesses) that were once where Lock 3 is now in Akron
I) The area near Wolf Ledges/Akron U. which I heard rumor that was once ravines/valleys that were filled in.

I love your channel so much - it has awakened a love of history in me that I have long forgotten and taken me on such an adventure. Your narration is so interesting - reminds me of Tolkien. This is so sad that this murder victim is still trapped there, in the same area as her murderer who haunts the place for different reasons (and no doubt plagued by terrible demons), but it's amazing that she makes sure anyone who is near the lock after dark is safe.
Canals do seem to bring out the worst in already evil people. Here in the UK, in a city called Manchester there are also lots of canals and for many years now there are constantly young men getting killed around there. Only young men for some reason. It's been going on for some time now, I think about ten years or so. It's only happening in Manchester - I live not too far from Birmingham where there's also a lot of canals and I haven't heard of this happening there, nor in my city which also has some canals.
Saying that though, many years ago I had a work colleague that suddenly disappeared. After some time, his body was recovered from one of the canals in Birmingham. If I remember right, they also recovered his bike. Folks at work started to assume suicide, saying he had a difficult childhood, but I doubt this because in my line of work, one gets vetted very strictly for any sign of mental instability (similar to pilots). I also doubt very much that a person who plans on committing suicide would drive into a canal with his bike!
Very sad, all these tragedies. The Earth is now so old that it's full of all the energy of past tragedies and sad events. The pain lingers on long after the event has passed and is all but forgotten. Given the state the world is in now, there will be tons more hauntings in years to come...
You sure present your videos beautifully. I hope that this poor murder victim can find peace soon - and that the murderer, and all wrongdoers, get what they deserve!

@@CuriousHistoryYT It has a long history because the canals were the highways of their day, especially before the railroad came along. Nowadays of course the canals are not used to transport goods any more but some folks live on narrowboats.
Yup it's a shame what's happening in Manchester, all sorts of theories have been brought up but because the murderer has never been caught, more recently even supernatural explanations have been suggested. For a few years the murders stopped (maybe the killer was in prison?) but then started up again. One guy who survived reported having been thrown into the canal on purpose, and many of the bodies recovered had injuries that matched having been thrown, but the question was then posed why don't the victims swim to safety. Well, the survivor said he managed to get to the side of the canal and called for help but whatever it was, threw him back right into the water!
There are security cameras but nothing has ever been captured, it's as if whatever creature is doing this knows how to avoid cameras or ever being spotted. It does sound supernatural...
@@johndavies1090 Ah very interesting, yes a lot of folks used to do that years ago from what I've heard. Do you still remember Victoria Square being open to road traffic? I think it was in the early 90's that they made it for pedestrians only. They rebuilt the whole area again over the last few years, the library is gone and has been replaced by this horrible modern thing on Centenary Square. They spent millions on it only to close it to the public when the scamdemic started! I studied at the Brassouse Language Center which is now located in the library until they closed it all and made courses online. So all the millions were wasted! That's where your council tax goes...
Reminds me, do you remember Sheepcote Street when the Brasshouse Language Center was located there, near the junction with Broad Street? The Progressive Synagogue was located opposite the Brasshouse. I used to attend that synagogue for services but didn't like the Rabbi so I stopped going, lol. They sold the land years ago and the synagogue moved, no idea where it is now. But I miss the Brasshouse, the building was perfect for a language school (I've studied various languages there since 1997). Apparently, the building used to be the waterboard. It's a shame that they sold that off too for "redevelopment", most likely to be turned into luxury apartments.
When the Brasshouse moved into the library and I started a new course there, in 2019, I was shocked - suddenly we students needed security passes and there were security guards that checked every person going up the escalator - it was like Fort Knox! I hated it, but then the courses went online which was even worse, eventually my course got canceled off altogether so I have to self study now. They used to teach a lot more languages than they offer now.
And New Street station got rebuilt in 2015 - such a shame, it's a nightmare now! Total nightmare! I should be working now at Centenary Square but got very sick last year so haven't been into Birmingham since December 2021, I'm sure it changes every day - for the worse.
From what I've heard from old people, Birmingham used to be a fine city but it sure isn't now, anyone who can get out moves out. Spoke to a chap from Tamworth not long ago, he said he lived all his life in Brum but moved away as it's such a violent city now. I'm not from Birmingham myself, used to live near Sutton Coldfield in the 90's but then moved, I'm now between Birmingham and Derby (South Staffs).
Or an inside job. Cameras are everywhere. Imagine having knowledge of where the cameras aren’t!
I don’t discount the supernatural however. Maybe something is protecting what it believes to be theirs!

In early 84 family moved to Sagamore right up the hill from Dover Lake/Brandywine. We had the bike train right behind our house and the whole Cuyahoga Valley to explore and play in. It was great getting to discover and see so many things hidden in the over growth. Got to experience a lot of it before the parks came in and cleaned everything up.

I don't know if there are any worthwhile stories to be told, but I always used to hear about "The Witch's Ball" at Myrtle Hill Cemetary in Brunswick, and Rogue's Hollow near Doylestown, where "Cry Baby Bridge" is found.

Yes, he was a worker for the railroad. He carries a lantern with him. I was 12 the first time, then went back with friends when I was 25. The tracks are gone now. Almost 60 now, still would like to go back one day. 👋

The lock is quite remote (a solid mile walk into the woods via towpath). I can’t think of anyone in their right mind who would venture in at night. But you never know I guess.

I do believe this account. Thank you for sharing it. I never doubt these anymore since my experiences many years ago. I’d rather not say where it all took place as the area is a small town, yet well known. 2 accounts:
The First: While in Junior High my friend and her family lived in a house where the allegedly son killed his mother, but the way he did it left enough doubt for him to not be charged with the crime. He owed her much money, a real deadbeat apparently, and he lived with his mom. She was tired of his mooching off of her and not having a job, so she finally told him he would have to leave. Soon after she was found dead in the bathroom, where she seemed to have fallen and struck her head, killing her. Thing is the injury could have been made by a blow to the head as well, but nonetheless it left plenty of doubt either way so the son never was charged. Years later strange hauntings and events were known to occur in the home, and no one lived there for very long. When I stayed all night my friend told me this story. A painting on the wall had eyes that seemed to move and follow you wherever you walked in the room where it hung. A man’s voice would call out a person’s name when they were upstairs, especially when alone in the house. Water would be heard running in the bathroom tub, and when checked there would be no water running. Also, a young bride on her wedding day who lived in the house many years ago tripped going down the stairs in her wedding dress on her way to go get married, and she broke her neck, died instantly. She was seen going down the steps often. While there we had settled into bed, and we heard strange scraping sounds under the bed. We both looked over the side of the bed to see a soft green glow coming from under the bed. We looked under it and saw all these patches and splashes of glowing green across the floor! We earlier swept the floors well, and even under her bed. Her brothers were not home to play tricks on us. They were staying with friends. Her parents were at a business meeting and were coming home late. They left us a list of chores to do, but also left us some great snacks to eat, so we had looked forward to the evening. When we were done we settled into the living room to watch tv, but we just felt so uneasy that we decided to just go to bed, where we sat up talking until late and then turned out the lights to go to sleep. That’s when we saw the glow under the bed. Earlier I had heard a man call out my name from downstairs and heard heavy footsteps on the steps. I looked to see who it was, no one was there. My friend was also in the kitchen busy, so she wasn’t around there to play a trick on me. I had to slam the door shut to make the spirit stop saying my name. Then I heard my friend call up to me to see if I was okay. I opened the door to see her worried look on her face. I was fine, but it was a scary experience, and I never expected to have it. Never stayed all night there again.
Second Account: Same town mind you. This was when I was in high school, and I stayed with another friend for the night. We had settled in to get some sleep, and I was about to doze off when I heard this blood hurdling scream of a woman in the night. I sat straight up in the bed I was in scared half out of my wits! I asked if she heard it. She said yes I wanted to call the police, but she said it wouldn’t do any good since it was a full moon it was the ghost of the woman who had been murdered by her husband. He wanted a divorce, she didn’t want to give him one because she loved him and believed they could work things out. He came home one night and brutally beat her, then while still alive he took her into the dining room, turned on all the lights, then hung her from the chandelier she loved so much which hung over their dining room table. She would often turn it on and leave it on all night to be seen by those driving by at night through the huge floor to ceiling window in the dining room. On the night she was hung people would drive by and see her lifeless body hanging from the chandelier through the well lit window. When several people got home they called the police. They checked it out, thinking it would either be a sick prank or that she had committed suicide. When they saw her and the condition she was in they knew he had beaten her and then hung her till dead. From what I was told they never did find him either. He left after that to never be seen again. But every full moon on its first night her screams were heard all over the area. Just one fear shattering scream. They had ministers come in to pray, and a priest to bless the home, but it still continued. No one would buy the home, and the electric was off to the place. But when she was heard screaming if a person dared to look out the window they would see the place was all lit up with lights and her hanging from the chandelier that was still there. My friend looked out the window and said it was all lit at the place. She tried to get me to peek, but I was having nothing to do with that. Soon after the fire department conducted a training event in the home, and burned it to the ground. Then they had the ground salted with white salt. Screams were still heard. So, they went back in and salted with black salt, and that was said to have stopped the screams from being heard again. The corner where the house once stood sat empty for many years after. I’d get gas in my car at the gas station across the street, and as you pumped the gas in one had to stand facing that piece of land. It always sent cold shivers through me, and I tried not to pump gas there, but sometimes it was inevitable. A few years back a bank bought the property and built on the land. I always wondered if strange things occurred in that bank. I just know I’d never bank there nor work there.
So indeed I do believe these things occur. Residual haunts or intelligent I can’t say, but they do happen. The other home was also finally torn down as well. No one wanted it.

I think when a tragic death occurs some mark is left behind, and it leaves a possibility for it to replay in unusual ways.
