Every time I hear about the horrific acts men do to others throughout history, it brings tears to my eyes and I have to ask: what happens to the hearts of men that they can take the life of another? These peaceful men, woman, and children begged for their lives and it mattered none. When you told about a 12 yo girl who begged for her life, it broke me into sobs to know that it did not soften their hearts one bit. I pray their faith has given them eternal rest and peace. This is absolutely an instance where I wish we could go back and change history.

Thank you for covering the Gnadenhutten Massacre. I've been there a number of times since I was a kid. Dad and I used to put our canoe in the river near by for trips down to Dresden passing by all the old Delaware Indian sites along the way. I've always noted that even the modern village and surrounding area has an oppressed, maybe sad feel about it.
Last year while returning from an event at Shonebrun Historic Village I made sure to stop so our daughter would know of the place and pay her respects at the mound.
I had read a ghost story about the area some time back.
A couple years after the massacare, an American army column was marching through on their way back to Ft Pitt from Ft Detroit and halted and encamped across the river in the valley. In the night, they reported an erie fog rolling in and the soldiers seeing faces of Native Americans in the fog thought to be the victims of the massacre. From then on an army column never halted there again while traveling between the two forts.

I'm Anishinaabe and as soon as I saw the burial mound I got chills.
My family is all from Michigan and Canada (my dad's side and a small part of my mom's, at least). Moving to Detroit wouldn't have improved their lives. Originally the natives and the fur traders in the area got along for decades, intermarried, and lived side by side, or with villages of Metis (mixed children) in-between the natives and mostly French settlers. By the time the British took over the area things got bad, they tried to force both the natives and French off lands they'd shared for generations. The enemies of the Anishinaabe tribes (such as Iroquois) side with the British, which was only to be expected, the British hated the French, and the Iroquois hated the Anishinaabe. I can't fault them for it. If the positions had been reversed the same may have happened.
But to slaughter peaceful, nonviolent people, just because of what they were... so sad.

This is just so so sad! Thank you for presenting this story in such a respectful way!
I think the spirit boy wanted to show the visitor what had happened and the pain they all felt when they were being murdered. The visistor who saw the spirit boy, must have been am empath to be able to feel the boy's pain.
Just why are there so many demons running around pretending to be humans while harming humans! I have often wondered about that. There are too many portals to the underworld open. According to our Hopi beliefs (I'm half Native American), this is what is supposed to happen in the last days of the Fourth World - but why? And for how long? As someone who has also suffered tremendously at the hands of non-human demons, I really wish I had an answer. If it wasn't for them - we would all be living the way we were meant to live: peacefully, happy, without fear.
Whatever is causing all this evil to occur, I hope it comes to an end soon and that the world can recover from centuries and millenia of needless pain!

I am so sorry that you have suffered so! I have great respect for the wisdom preserved by the Hopi people.
As for why, my tribe (Yaqui) holds ceremonies which include men in masks menacing the participants with wooden swords. After awhile it feels real, and frightening. The reason is that without fear there can be no courage. I'm sad that what you have experienced was actual suffering, beyond just fear--that takes a very real, beyond symbolic, courage! The rituals teach us how this can make us spiritually strong. That doesn't make it easy, I know, but it can offer some consolation that it's at least not pointless. At least this has helped me.
      Long may your people dance!

    • @LittleKitty22
      @LittleKitty22 Год назад +1

@@DoloresJNurss Thank you! What a beautiful reply!
It is true that fear gives courage and that overcoming fear, and thus showing courage, makes us spiritually strong. However, so much of the suffering caused by "humans" is needless suffering. Like this massacre for example. Like my little cat getting brutally murdered. Senseless, meaningless suffering that causes ongoing trauma without anyone gaining anything from it. Just senseless, needless pain and sadness.
Courage can also only be gained if one has a chance to confront that which causes the fear. For example, if one is facing a dangerous animal or a human attacker - if one has the chance to confront whatever it is, and fight it, then that is courage. But what if one gets attacked by something that one cannot even fight against? The victims of this massacre didn't stand a chance. My kitty didn't stand a chance. I didn't stand a chance against my numerous attackers. They attacked from behind - where I couldn't see them (both literally and symbolically, as they all attacked in such a way that I didn't see them, or their attacks, coming). My cat's murderer broke in when I was out at work. And that was a personal attack by the way, not a random burglar.
When one cannot defend oneself, when one is forced to suffer an unequal and therefore uneven attack, it leaves one powerless and with a sense of helplessness and thereby failure. One doesn't learn courage from that. On the contrary.
The symbolic menacing attacks in the rituals you mention are very different. The participants can see the "attackers" and "fight" them. One can have the courage to stand up to them. Or run away - it's a choice. By standing up to them, one shows courage and one learns that an enemy can be overcome. Fear can be overcome. You are right, that teaches courage. But this doesn't apply to attacks where one doesn't see the attackers coming.
And it is this senseless suffering created by these creatures that I would not describe as human that causes all the ongoing trauma and pain. That's why this site of Gnadenhutten is haunted - the spirit boy is still crying in sadness over an attack that his people had no chance to fight against. And gosh, I can sense his pain just from watching this video.
These demonic creatures that attack humans (and animals) need to get forced back into the underworld. And the portals to the underworld need to be closed forever! I hope this will happen soon - very soon! It is time for the Fifth World to emerge.
Keep your nation's rituals alive! They are more important than ever.

For all my schooling, even in my pre-teaching classes, I only had a single Ohio History class in 7th grade, and that was just 1/3 of the year as they balanced it with American and Government. We traveled to Fort Lawrence not long ago and I learned the history there, and saw how the footprint of history still lies on the ground. May we make sure our kids never forget the evil as well as the good that men have done so that they are not repeated.

Hello John, thank you for sharing this. My family on my dad's side has been living in the area since the early 1800s. Not alot of people know what moravians are so it is hard to explain but I greatly appreciate you explaining this side of history. Growing up in the moravian church myself and visiting the cemetery growing up it always felt like a place of solace. My dad has told me even the cheif of police won't go there at night because he had witnessed things he couldn't explain. I am greatful to you for posting online for others to know this history. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My 7times great grandfather moved from Bethlehem to Genaudhutten. 1742-1814. He is buried in Genaudhutten. In 1995, this CA Granddaughter visited his grave. Peter Ginther. My Great grandmothers maiden name was Ginther. And then her married name was. No longer.

Hi John, Oh...where to start with this video. What a heartbreaking tragedy, this one got really close to the heart, and when you got to the part about what they did to the Indians it had me in tears. To think that someone would be that heartless to promise someone they will take care of them and in just a few days lives were ended. One day those who did this will face an Eternal Judgement as we all will, and they will have to answer the question "Why did you do this?" To those who wrung their hands and left, because they couldn't stand the scene, and the cries, may God bless them. There are far to many tragedies in the world today, but to go back in time, and hear about this is just awful. I am hoping one day that when i can make it out that way, I will be stopping by and expressing my condolences to all those who's lives were lost, and bring them a gift to share with them as well. Thank you so much, John to you, and your entire crew for taking us back in time to share "Curious History" with us all, and things that no one knows about, or has been forgotten to time, and place. You all stay safe out on the road in your travels, and may God bless all those unfortunate souls who's lives were lost, and may God bless you all, as you continue to provide us all with beautiful, and yet at times sad videos from times long forgotten.

This is how our native friends get justice, by telling their story to make sure everyone knows what happened. Damn that was a rough story… but I think we all need to be careful otherwise history will repeat itself. Good job on the video, guys.

I love your history videos. You are such a respectful host to the memory of those you speak of. This story had me in tears, I won't lie. The darkness that can lay in human hearts is shattering. But the worst to me is that even in death these people have no release. It should be the perpetrators doomed to walk the earth looking for an absolution that will never come.

Gnadenhütten (Noddenhooten) German for "Grace Huts".

Yep. The true pronunciation is how you have it written. The inhabitants of the town, however, pronounce it the way I said it in the video. Wanted to stay true to the local vernacular.
