Can you please elaborate on parainfluenza3? Last summer my 4 year old son, very healthy, had a 102 fever for one day, no cough, slight runny nose, mild torso rash... the following day he went into cardiac arrest and after 45 mins of CPR he was placed on ECMO. CT showed mild disease of his sinus, clear lungs, bloodwork spinal tap all clear. The only thing that came back was a nasal swab with parainfluenza3. I'm leaving out a billion details but I just wanted to hear more about about parainfluenza3 being this deadly given hardly any symptoms. Please.
He survived, several issues but doing well now - thank God!

Children normally respiratory arrest not cardiac arrest. Personally as a ED Nurse your child having parainfluenza I am 99.9% of the opinion this was a respiratory arrest. Which can result from viruses that affect a child causing respiratory distress allowed to progress.
Kids hold & hold (compensate) well until they Cant (decompensate) dropping into a respiratory arrest.

The other thing possible is the PCR detection of parainfluenza doesn’t mean he had infective viral load at time of test. PCRs can detect this long time when kids aren’t sick
But might of had it 2-3 months ago for example
If recently unwell(which you say hasn’t happened) instead well
      = just getting it
or its from weeks to 3 months ago detecting it.
However that doesn’t explain why he suddenly respiratory arrested
If its a cardiac arrest = cardiovascular problems & he should be under a cardiovascular dr URGENTly

@@ajlavanetwork5755 He was under the care of a cardiologist, neurologist and nephrologist through nemours. Seemingly healthy but did catch many sicknesses since that time when he was 3. All of his doctors said he was healthy despite being dizzy every now and then. They would tell us he needed to drink more water maybe and possibly he had some sort of neurological thing from having been on life support. Even though I tracked all of his food and liquid and that was adequate. All bloodwork, ekg, echo, eeg, were seemingly great. He about 6 months ago wore a heart monitor for 30 days and the results from it looked healthy. He also wore a brain monitor for 72 hours and that too looked normal. His kidney function appeared healthy too. He was off all medication for over a year. Life seemed great! He was active and happy and healthy.
He passed away March 13 this year. We went by ambulance to the hospital because he appeared to be having a seizure. The doctor suspected encephalitis because of his headache and he wasn't making much sense when he was speaking. They ran all sorts of tests the only one that came back positive was influenza-A H1. They seemed to have stabilized him the seizures had stopped and the dr stepped out of the room, the nurse was still with us and I was going down the list of symptoms he had. He had a fever for 1 day of 102 and he had a slight cough and was dizzy and lack of appetite. His heart was racing 150 beats and all the sudden his heart rate started rapidly declining went down to 80-75 and I screamed for the ICU doctor because he wasn't responding to me. His respirations were decent. And his oxygen was around 97/98. He went into cardiac arrest again and because of the scarring on his veins they couldn't get a line to his heart to put him on ECMO again. They tried for 1 hour and 45 mins all of the ICU team in a line giving him CPR. With the echo they could see his heart was surrounded by fluid and wasn't beating properly. They shocked him and nothing changed. They said they could not get enough of the fluid off to have his heart beat properly. After he passed away they asked if they could perform an autopsy. I agreed to it because I needed closure of sorts. I begged them to be so respectful to him and they agreed absolutely. The nurses there were so kind. Once he passed away they cleaned him and took off all the brain leads and monitors and everything and allowed us to sit with his sweet tiny body for a while. They gave us some memory items with his finger print and a lock of his hair.
The autopsy revealed scaring on his heart consistent with myocarditis as well as some thickening of the walls of his heart. His kidneys had several cortical scars (from life support before they said). The lead cardiologist and lead ICU doctor told me they believed he might have had an autoimmune condition that caused his body to respond to viruses differently than other people. As a side note he had not received the COVID shot but was up to date on all of his vaccines.
I'm still in shock, still in disbelief, and I genuinely don't know how I'll ever be ok again. Thank you for listening. I feel like no one really understands.
