Van life UNLOCKED! 2024 Volkswagen Crafter Kampervan review (built by Jayco RV)

  • It's not every review that I sleep in the vehicle I'm testing... but this review is different.
I just spent the night in the new VW Crafter Kampervan, an Australian designed RV that is built in conjunction with Jayco in Melbourne, Australia.
We don't get the Europe spec Grand California van due to regulations in our market, so instead, VW Australia decided it would create something specific to the needs of Aussie customers, and I've got to say, they've bloody-well nailed it.
This camper has so much stuff you will love, from the fridge, microwave, cooker, diesel heater, air-con, and bathroom with toilet, to the queen-size bed and storage in abundance.
I had a really, really good sleep.
There's also a diesel engine, all-wheel drive, and two different versions to choose from.
So make sure you let me know what you think about it in the comments section, and be sure to tell me if you'd like more campervan content.

We were lucky enough to grab one of the first generation Campervan. All Terrain. After 24000km I can attest to it being a great camper. The ability to go just that little bit further than many other vans sold us. I like many of the upgrades on this second gen model but the high level fixed bed would be a deal breaker. Our van has twin bed/single bed flexibility. We have it permanently set up with the twin beds. Practical, easy to make and importantly you have walking access right through the van. The new setup would feel quite claustrophobic.
It is big bit of gear but shrinks the more you drive it and is very cat-like. We have averaged about 10.5 l/km overall including outback tracks. Cheers.

AWD is nice to have on some campsites especially if rains overnite. Capable of towing decent boat with AWD giving more launching options. For loop I'd tow cargo trailer to carry extra supplies and toys with small boat on top.

That great big box of a shower takes up an awful lot of space and toilet spoils the whole van. These campers never hold enough water to have showers off grid...better do without, and shower at paid sites. You can have an under-seat toilet arrangement, which is much more sensible.

This is not new - it is the 2nd Gen of this model - and I am not sure what sort of research this reviewer did but let me tell you - on the build side I wouldn’t be so cheerful - the quality of the 1st Gen was not good and talking about the ownership at the end a 5 yr warranty ain’t great if 15 mths into owning one you never had fully functioning product. Yep the Crafter side of things is pretty good the whole package I wouldn’t trust too much just yet because the Camper build side would have to have improved a hell of a lot from the last model to be worth the money and at that still reasonable price point I can’t really see that as the price difference would have been mainly eaten up by some upspec’d components not by more time or care spent on the build.

The problem with VW in AUS is that they charge INSANE prices for their parts. I was quoted $650 for the return fuel rail above the injectors. That's a $50 part. It's literally 30cm of rubber and plastic. Don't get a VW in Australia. I've been there, once bitten, twice shy. I would go any other van now. I've had 2 Crafters.
