    The campground where this cart was found was a yearly outing for our family. Rode those carts many times, now knowing the history behind them makes it more special personally. Thank you so much for keeping all the automotive history you do alive for future generations!

    This cart in this video is the Grand Prix of America machine. Malibu Grand Prix built their own cars and were an upgrade from these in many ways. I worked for Grand Prix of Phoenix in the late 70's when MGP bought the site and brought in the Virage cars. The old GPA cars were restored and sold to the Chattanooga park. Both used the Wankel rotary until MGP used up the world supply, then switched to a Kawasaki twin 2-sroke. Malibu built 30 tracks in the '80's and was owned by Warner Communications. Only a few left now. These original DeLorean carts are rare and very cool. Happy to see the interest. (see Malibu Grand Prix in Wikipedia)

    Wow... we had these at the Faribault Grand Prix in Minnesota back in the early 80's - I worked there for a time. Ours had 440 to 900 cc Kawasaki snowmobile engines in them, and they were seriously fast - thanks for the memory!

    I actually drove these cars when I worked at the Grand Prix track in Chattanooga Tennessee back when I worked at Raccoon Mountain Attractions. They were insanely fast and handled great. They ran a Wankel engine and sounded like a vacuum cleaner while running. We had about 6 of these cars in running operation while we were in business. It thrilled me to come across this video and brought back many memories. Thanks for the upload!!!

      That is so awesome! I'd love to get this thing back up and running again. I've heard from a lot of people that they were super fun to drive. Very cool that you have personal experience with these things (and this one in particular)!

    That’s a pretty cool kart… definitely over engineered and built more heavy duty than your typical vintage GoKart. Hopefully you can get it restored and running again (with a period correct rotary motor… Sachs?)

    These are what was called Malibu Grand Prix car they really had nothing in common with karts. They were very popular in California. I still have my " license" for driving them, that was back in 1972-73.

  • @danw1955
    @danw1955 5 лет назад +1

    OMG! It's a M.G.P. kart! Originally Wankel single rotor powered, these things were pretty quick, and you had to acquire a 'license' of sorts from Malibu Grand Prix to drive one. It would be amazing to re-fit this with a MC engine of some sort (preferably an early 90's CBR-250RR that winds to 20,000 rpm).. that is, if any of them still exist in the U.S. that haven't been blown or strained through a chain link fence. This would make it sound and perform like it's full-size cousin. Definitely a build I'd like to take on if I had the resources and my health wasn't so bad.😉

    I had something similar to this about ten years ago. Picked it up in Paris Tx, hauled it home, messed with it for a few years, then sold it to a gentleman in Rusk Tx.
    4w independent suspension with rear trailing arms, 4 wheel disc brakes, fan cooled 650cc Bombardier engine (Tillitson carb), with a centrical clutch, rear axle (chain drive?), and 14" rims. Full multipiece fiberglass body with belly pan.
    Still have a few pics of it.

    Drove one in Albuquerque a couple times but I think Malibu was forced out of business with a death at the track in Albuquerque when a cart went off coarse and up the front of another that was on track and broke the driver of the seconds neck and killed him.

    Methinks the franchise came to Kelowna, B.C., Canada during the mid/late 80's ...
    Malibu Grand Prix was a highlight in the city then. Flintsones WaterSlide,... until snowflakes got triggered on both.

      Mario Andretti also had a similar "Gran Prix" franchise for a while- There was one in Longwood (near Orlando) back in the late 70's/early 80's that I used to frequent. I got pulled over for speeding once and handed the LEO my Mario Andretti "driver license" by mistake. He was not humored!
