  • The Developer Blog just released announcing the midseason balance patch for season 10 and in it will be a series of improvements for the tank experience, in some ways to make them more reliably pressured, for instances where tanks do live forever, but otherwise ways to reduce the burst damage on tanks, the biggest improvement being a new 25% headshot resistance as well as an improved 50% knockback resist, up from 30%.     With the crit resistance, Mauga can no longer just plop himself in front of the enemy tank and go BRRRRR, he actually has incentive to target squishies instead. Noice.

      Although it did say “headshot damage” as opposed to “critical damage.” We’ll have to see if that applies to Mauga’s chain guns as well

    Love the percentage Hp gain and armor rollback. It was never fair that DPS and tanks would gain Hp back at the same rate. Also, tanks can’t get farmed by Tracer and Reaper (heroes that are very difficult for tanks to catch) as easily

      I disagree, his health Regen might be nice so he'll never die, but the main issue with him isn't his ability damage. It's his pea shooter guns. They were already weak and then they went and buffed everyone's HP and now his guns are straight up awful

      @@gobbagoo yes it is about utility. He is still able to self sustain and scout before a team fight, but he still needs to be able to assassinate the backline which is much harder now with the healing passive and higher HP, plus his guns are weak which I mentioned is his main issue

      @@MistaFinni I figure it would depend on the amount of overhealth gained. When hitting multiple enemies with slam + empowered punch+ meteor strike you can get a pretty large amount of overhealth. I could see it being tricky to scale the total health regen with the ever decreasing amount of overhealth gained though. However It would be a well-deserved reward further incentivizing landing abilities, especially in a version of OW where Tank Health regen enables more independent tank play and his knuckle pellets are nerfed.

    Ball having knockback resist is huge. But you'll have to maybe time it by going out of ball form. Because his physics are super wonky in ball form. Any sort of knockback will send him miles away in ball form.

      @@TSGC16 yeah sorry if i was unclear. they scaled up the damage of melee abilities to match the new health pools but Fireball and Piledriver didn't receive damage compensation at the time. so an indirect nerf.

    I never understood why they changed armor, it had a purpose which was to mitigate high damage characters with low per instance damage. Then it was changed to a flat 30%.. which all it did was buff supports being able to heal that armor at the same rate as normal hp but it giving more effective hp. Rein having 400hp + 300 armor was an effective 790hp.. where is with the old armor system it depended on who was shooting you, vs a hanzo it would be closer to 710hp but vs Reaper it would be more like 1000hp. There are going to be some issues unless values are changed, like the Dva vs Winton matchup.. which has typically favored Dva, in the past but now will likely favor Winton to a nearly unfair degree especially with the headshot changes.

    Huge W for the changes to Wreaking ball and JQ. I am really excited to try them out, but I suspect that wreaking ball will still be countered! Hopefully the boop resistance helps a little bit!

    we might be at the point where we have a tank like lucio's area of influence abilities. but what would be cool is if there are 3 spheres of influence like armor/^health/team fortify

    One key note is that armor is usually half or a quarter of someone's hp pool. Now tanks are gonna have that 25% dmg reduction against headshots regardless of their armor status.

    Did yall miss the part where they're reverting the Ow2 armor changes back to the flat damage decrease above 10? So Tracer is gimped against tanks, Hog is gimped against tanks, and Reaper... well he was already terrible, but now he's even worse.

      @jackmcmorrow9397 This doesn't nerf Hog it just makes him more focused on squishies and makes him stop shooting the tank more. If anything the knockback resistance and headshot damage reduction just buff him. As a Hog main, I approve of these changes!

    These are good changes, but they only really affect Tank vs non-tank match ups. Tanks counter picking other tanks will still be a problem. Like if Rein and Orisa get the same buffs, then the matchup hasn't changed, Orisa still shits on Rein

    Decreasing headshot damage on the biggest hitboxes in the game, makes unbelievable sense and it is irritating that had not been changed until now.
    Unfortunately, 50% resistance to knockbacks is missing the mark. Stuns, etc, comprise the majority of pain points for every Tank, meanwhile less mobile Tanks benefit disportionately from the more mobile ones.
    The Health Passive change also seems like an oversight from its initial release than a "buff." Players already knew that heroes with less max health benefited significantly more, and for the rest the passive was near-nonexistence.

      Also, please nerf Tanks. Tank heroes targeting the enemy Tank are the worst offenders for ruining the Tank experience.
      Straight buffing Tanks, just makes the game more dependent on their output while also creating a co-dependence on focusing the enemy Tank, again, ruining the Tank experience.

      @@treasuredquartzomg yes. Hog and mauga are boring to play against because they can farm the enemy tank and still get ult charge because of their mass healing. I hate the boop resist passive it’s worthless on many tanks and detrimental in certain situations. Hog ult is going to be more effective against tanks (when it was already the best tank busting ult.) Boops was not the tank problem it’s the stacking of cc specifically hard cc. Tanks only need a 25% resist to all cc effects and their durations. The cc is still effective when used properly but the tank can mitigate the cc if smart.

      @@treasuredquartz 100%! Why don't more people see this? As long as tanks hold a disproportionate amount of the team's power budget, they will continue to eat all the burst damage and dirty CC tricks etc that the enemy team can muster, because the enemy team HAS to or the tank rolls them. And since the tank has so much of the team's power budget it also means the supports feel trapped in pocketing the tank and letting the dps on their team fend for themselves. It's not a great situation for anyone on the team. If tank players want to feel less like they are constantly being dogpiled, or the entire enemy team counter picks them, then they need to balance tanks so people don't feel like they NEED to do those things to deal with them. Wouldn't it feel better if each individual hero and role had equal relative power and so instead of just "use all your dirty tricks on the enemy tank," it was "figure out which enemy PLAYER is being most effective and counter THEM."

      The only knock back thats ever bothered me for tanks in junkrats. Not that I think junkrat is overpowered (quite the opposite), but holy fxck are those mines annoying. Even against tanks a mine knocks them around 10~ meters away (with the overall distance actually being higher since youre moving them along an arc over that 10 meters). A fully charged rocket punch from doomfist is 10 meters on a tank. Yet heres junkrat with 2 of those mines to ping pong ball your ass around.
      But ya, its the disables. Constant disables. Hinder, hack, snares, sleep dart, stuns- Etc. Its not uncommon to go against 2-3~ disables on the enemy team *excluding* the enemy tank. Which of course all get dumped into the tank. Im not going to complain about the knock back resistance, but the disables are what need addressed.

      Great news- Tanks like mauga and hog are going to have a harder time "Farming" the enemy tank.
      A few points about these characters.
      Hog could farm particular tanks because hed hook them in and then shoot them in the head. Now those headshots will do less damage. More so the armor changes will see hogs base damage further reduced against armored opponents (ie, predominantly tanks).
      Mauga likewise will see his damage dropped a lot against enemy tanks. Maugas guns only do 4 damage per bullet. Hes going to see a straight 50% damage reduction against enemy tanks with armor, versus the 30 he sees currently to armor. And then of course we have his core gimmick/mechanic- Lighting people on fire with 1 gun, then doing crit damage to blazing targets with his other gun, because he leaches back a % of this damage as shielding. Well with criticals being reduced against tanks, hell be doing a lot less damage to tanks, and be generating a lot less health off them.

    I do think on Heros like Rein and Winston, you can turn your head at least so the spread head shots are the unavoidable ones and those are the ones nerfed. Widow and hanzo can get jumped at least. Mei landing icicles might be a winner but doing less damage while slowing someone with armor might make it a net nerf vs tanks overall

    Tank Synergies were like 90% of the fun of Overwatch... And they will do anything but admitting that 5v5 was a big mistake.
    I still can't wrap my head around fact that overwatch 2 was a LITERAL DOWNGRADE to Overwatch 1, when it comes to features.
    At this point, I feel like the majority of players - or at least a group so big that it cant be overlooked - would like 6v6 to return.
    But they wont admit that the ONE MAJOR CHANGE they made, was a big mistake.

    Before people start talking about ball meta, ball might be good but probably not like orisa or mauga good. Sombra + brig still essentially means ball doesnt exist, outside of minefield his damage still isnt all that good, but these buffs are very nice. He'll be better but probably still outclassed by dva, winston, doom, and possibly Rammatra as well

    I can't remember how beams were affected by OW1 armor. If they aren't affected by the instance reduction, that means Symmetra will be even faster at melting tanks (assuming she's any good) 🤔

    I do like this update overall, but I still feel my idea was mostly better. I think the biggest change i'm kind of liking is the Armor Change as from what I have seen the hero's getting nerfed verse armor actually were very annoying for tanks more then the hero's who are getting buffed.
    The one who might become a major issue is Cassidy who did 70 damage body, 140 damage headshot (current patch is 49/98) , (post patch will be 65/97.5) so ends up being the same damage for a headshot but significantly buffed in a body shot. Making him able to melt players like Winston faster when diving in and then like normal headshotting as they leave or since the armor was shredded overall people can bodyshot normal damage.
    But suprising many hero's actually have low pellet damage Ram Primary Fire, Wrecking Ball Cannons, Mauga, JQ Shotgun, Doom Shotgun, Roadhog Shotgun, and DVA will find it incredibly hard to burn through armor on tanks which is arguably most of the tanks or even squishies like Torb/Brig for the little they have.
    Which brings us back to Torb specifically... his primary fire will be exactly the same as cassidy's pistol. making him another tank buster to dive attacks. Rivit Gun aka Shotgun will be nerfed
    The shotgun however did 12.5 per pellet which is getting reduced to 7.5 per pellet lowering the impact shot to 75 from 125 which will be about 5 more damage then the primary fire so not quite worth it anymore when armor is active. Then in the head it will be 112.5 instead of prepatch 175. Which imo Torb was able to reduce tank hp extremely fast with rivit gun in peoples face.
    Torb/Brig will be buffed quite a bit against hero's like Reaper, Tracer, Sombra at all anymore as he has quite a bit of armor. Those hero's will do 50% less damage instead of 30% now for the chunks of armor.
    Pharah who actually can easily hit tanks so she'll be doing 115 damage per direct hit vs originally 84 so this could mean for some tanks 1-2 less shots to chunk out the armor. Since Torb/Brig don't have much armor to begin with this change doesn't really impact them. BUT she is getting a nerf to ultimate verse tanks since the damage per projectile is 10. So the armor chunks will be 50% reduced instead of 30%.

      @@mister_seas no with how tanky tanks are about to be that's gonna be less of an issue and may actually be what keeps tanks in check/killable, the biggest problem im seeing rn is the game just turning into a slugfest where its basically a repeat of mauga meta, where tanks are just unloading on each other and no one dies.
      But I'll give the patch a chance, on paper this seems ok

    Weren’t the health changes in S9 meant to target burst damage? How does buffing burst damage via the armour change not increase TTK at lower ranks where they’re not even hitting headshots? How does it make chain CCs or Mauga mirrors any better?

    They need to make a change to hog that when hes taking a breather he can no longer be effected by enemy status effects (nade, head shots, knockback, etc) then completly reverts when he stops. That would make him meta, or just a tank

    surprised you didn’t talk about how much the tank changes affect mauga, not only does the crit change lower his damage output on the enemy tank, but also the armor change is bad for his miniguns. i think this patch is good just for that reason 😂

    Another small quality of life change is that DPS can’t just milk as hardcore off tanks because their not doing as much damage to tanks with head shots. You can 1v1 a Zen as a tank and not get rolled

    earlier i saw dps and support queues at 15+ minutes while tank was below 1....says alot

      Honestly the q time estimates have been pretty inaccurate ever since the wide matchmaking update. My support was saying 15 minutes as well and I was getting 5-7 minute q times

      @@WinstonOfDojima still even if they are wrong tank is never above that 1 min mark unless you are very high champ and even then. i used to be a tank player i just couldnt do it anymore and have many friends who feel the same

    I would have much rather seen them remove or drastically reduce the DPS passive for Tanks rather than most of these changes. As a support player I can already see DPS players feeling like they have to play Sombra to deal with tanks. The sheer amount huge buffs without testing any of them with the public first. Also, I don't see how this solves the rock/paper/scissor counter swap problem, but I guess they don't see that as an issue.

    Now if they could slightly lower tank walk speed and then slightly increase dps walk speed , and then place healers in the middle or where they currently are by default .
    It would truly complete the roles feeling distinct

      To those who deem this as negative I have counter argument. If you feel it’s unfair cuz it kills a tank you like then why isn’t it a concern for characters who pretty much have 0 mobility? How is that balanced? Ana can’t gain height but she is mid- long range
      . She also can’t do much if she gets backlined. Sure dart is obvious go to but with a 16 sec cold down. Stopping one person will dart typically doesn’t do much especially when playing with randoms . So why is that acceptable ?

    So if I'm getting this right:
    Anyone doing less than 17 per pellet will notice a difference as they will be doing less damage to armored heroes. And if anyone is doing less than 50 per pellet will notice a difference as they will be doing less damage to armored heroes SPECIFCALLY ON HEADSHOT!
    Here is my math equation for reference:
    For body: x - 0.3x = x - 5
    For headshot: x-0.30x = (x-5)-0.25x
    If this is all done correctly, then heroes like Tracer will lose on both ends, Zen/Baptiste will win in body shots/lose to headshots, Cassidy will win on both ends

    These seem okay but I do think the armor change will still make tanks melt plus the dps passive effecting tanks is not good. They could’ve just made the dps passive not effect tanks and that would’ve went a long ways

    I think Dva and Winston are biggest winners. Jq and Zarya also big winners.
    Actually if you look at support roster, they don't have shotgun type of weapons. All supports will ignore armor now. That's big chunk 2/5 of the enemy team. Not sure how to feel about armor changes. Bastion, Reaper, Tracer, Sombra will do less damage sure but idk. Base 30% should have stayed for other type of weapons.
    This seems to be a net nerf to Ramattra if i'm not missing something. Reaper wasn't a problem for Ram. Against bastion, you already block and reach dmg reduction cap so again no benefit but now all the ranged heroes will dump a lot of damage to you. Cassidy right click will delete you. Ram will also lose massive damage from staff.

    Everyone is talking here about tanks. But let's not forget that they are not the only ones with armor. We also have Brig, Torb & Bastion who will profit from that buff... And they feel tanky enough
    Especially Reaper, Tracer and Sombra feel the effect. Of which two are already near garbage...

      Nah because with that line of thinking, you might as well give everyone some level of damage resistance, since taking dmg is a counter to every hero.
      Characters need to not be resistant to everything that threatens them.
      Ball gets screwed over by boops more than most heroes sometimes, but he can also easily boop every hero in the game himself.
