- So, How To thin paint to be used in a paint sprayer? A simple way I thin paint to be used in an Airless Paint Sprayer, HVLP Spray Gun and LVLP Spray Gun. I will be using this paint in a Krause and Becker electric airless paint sprayer. This is a very cheap Harbor Freight Paint Sprayer.
In this video, you will see I use bottled water to thin latex paint and this is the same way to thin water base primer as well. The paint you buy will give you a ratio of how much water it takes to thin out the paint. Use those instructions as a starting point. An old professional painter taught me this simple way to thin paint when I was just a boy trying to earn money for baseball cards and bubble gun lol.
Here is what HF website says about this product:
apply latex paints, water-based sealers, lighter body paints, and stains quickly and easily with this electric paint spray gun. This electric paint sprayer is perfect for general purpose painting projects in your shop, home or yard. The paint spray gun includes one extra replacement rod and cylinder assembly. Features include a high flow rate for better paint coverage, a durable 24 oz. polypropylene paint cup and a viscosity cup with hanger.

What kind of paint To mix with water I don’t want the buy the wrong paint.
Latex
Vans World thank man
I appreciate you. This is how we did it back in the 70’s have a great weekend coming up. 👍😁
Most of the video was your dumbass just mixing paint. WTF????????
You may have added 10 years to my life span with this video. Blessings!!!
lol. Thanks
thank you for the straight to the point no BS video. Im tired of all the videos with the measuring cups and crap, most people loose the cup , and your video shows how to do it without it and obviously but the looks of your shed, have the paint turn out to coat well. I appreciate your time, now its time for me to go paint!
No problem. I’ve worked in several paint shops. We trained using the cups but over time we would eye ball it. Thanks for the awesome comment and thank you for watching.
I gotta say some people just know things. You're one of those guys. Thank you you saved me a bunch of time!
My pleasure. Glad I could help. Things of the past are fading away. I wish more knowledge from years past was with us today. 👍😁
I was a little hesitant at first but your videos made it easy to paint my entire house with the Kraus & Becker sprayer! Thinning the latex properly, cleaning & maintaining the sprayer - your advice was the key element to my success. THANK YOU! My house is 30x80 and the siding is 9 foot high. Using a stepladder I was able to paint the entire house from start to finish in three hours. Front & back each took a half-hour and each long side took one hour.
Thank you for the kind words 👍😁
I am jealous 😂
Wait you're the brave RUclipsr that doesn't put on a hazmat suit ,double gloves ,welding mask and a condom to mix house paint ?!?!?!? You are brave !
thank you for making this video. I just purchased a paint sprayer and feel a lot more confident using it now
👍😁
Me too
"And I learnt that... the hard way."
Amen.
👍😁
Sweet I did it right before watching the video phheww..😅 I’m painting my kitchen with the old paint the homeowners left and was a bit thick..I thought water based hmm let’s add some water..was a bit nervous at first but mixed up just fine..I bought the same sprayer from Harbor Freight and have been reluctant to try it since I wasn’t sure how to thin it correctly..but watch out now I’m gunna be painting all types of stuff lol..I like these southern good ol’ boys ya always get a honest straight forward answer..subscribed thank ya Sir
Lol. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I’m glad the video helped ya. Old school ways are still out there. Things were so simple back in the day. We didn’t need all the new tool/toys out there today. Although they do make things easier at times. Lol. Have a great week 👍😁
@@VansWorld lol yea you’re right about that and things just seemed to last longer/built better..I’m only 30 but I have all my dad’s tools when we passed away and some were my grandfathers..welp think I’m goin to try that sprayer out today n paint my garage wish me luck haha take care buddy
Good luck. 👍 I hope it goes smooth for ya. 😁👍 have a good one.
You are great. Teaching by doing and acting, and a few key words.
😁
That was very simple and informative! Thankyou!
Yep. The stick method is what I learned in the 1970’s 👍😁
Thank you for the wonderful video. It was very helpful. Now...to paint.
👍😁
That’s 3 minutes of my life I’ll never get back 😩
Uh oh. Sorry
Stop CRYING, acting very childish!!! Grow up fool!!!
That was your choice!
Some painters use acrylic varnish to thin spray paint. It improves the film strength that water tends to weaken. Watch the sheen, though!
This is gold
Hopefully this method and sprayer will work for my desk.
Thanks for the tip about using bottled water; ditto for auto radiators (minerals and chemicals in tap water mess things up).
Checking viscosity with a zahn cup also helps. More accurate. 22 seconds.
True.
Hello Angie... I'm going to be spraying Upol Anti Corrosive Expoy Primer on my truck that I sanded down to the metal and then I want to spray Raptor liner on top of that with a Fuji Industrial Spray Equipment PLATINUM-T70 Fuji 3005-T70 Q5 Platinum Quiet HVLP Spray System. I was to use the Fuji spray system for the primer and the Raptor liner. I feel that getting proper thinning of the paint to optimize atomization through the Fuji system will be key. I appreciate your insight about the Zahn cup... I have never heard of this tool until you mentioned it. So you are saying that in order for a paint to spray properly through an airless sprayer it should be thinned to where it takes 22 seconds to flow out of a Zahn cup? I would really appreciate your help with this technique.
@@hermosohouse349 Most paint suppliers will have Technical Data Sheets online. Called TDS. This SHOULD give you the information on pump setting by type, and the viscosity and application information, such as millage and max coats recommended.
I am not familiar with automotive. I deal with wood coatings. However, the same info should be available. You will like need to search by product code.
You're a pro! Thanks for the great tip! Hope you're enjoying the summer so far! We've been off of YT for a bit, but had to come and catch up on your videos!
I’ve been missing your videos. I love your music.
I thought I was silly putting water in and glad I saw this!!
😁👍
Great video thank you
Thanks for the tips. I had not thought of the chemicals in city water reacting with paint. Have a great day.
Yeah if you thin down some paint and don’t use it all. The paint will sour and smell really bad from using city water. I thinned down some paint one time for my paint sprayer. Then poured the left over paint back into the can. The next time I used it , it had soured. I used it any way and the room smelled horrible for a good while. Bad experience. Haha.
Just the video I needed. Thanks.!!!!
You're welcome!
Love itt will this work for stain paint.. I'm going to try itt
As long as it’s water based stain. 👍😁
Looks beautiful 💚💛💙💜🤎🖤🤍❤️🧡
Thank you Jesus 🙏🏼
😁👍
Thanks I have 2 gallons on paint I'm gonna paint the fence the shed 🤷🏽♀️
I think the painters term usied: boxing your paint
Nice painting Tips👍✌
Thank you for the awesome comment. And thanks for watching 👍😁
I want this
Drop sheet ?
Thanks for the video. How's that Harbor Freight gun hold up for you? Look like it was working pretty good in the video. Thanks
It will test your ability to stay calm. And it will test your ability to troubleshoot lol.
@@VansWorld Best way to troubleshoot a krause and becker is to get a graco. 😃😃
I wish I saw this video last year because I thought my new sprayer was defective and I threw it out😭
This is helpful thanks van😊
Thanks Donna. I struggled to get a video up this week. Have a great weekend 👍😁
I bought a LVLP air compressor sprayer from Hobo Freight. Still thin like you did?
How would you go about cleaning out the canister of this spray gun ?
No one has actually made a cleaning video of this unit.
If you use latex / water based paint then use soapy water. If your using oil base / enamel paints then use generic paint thinner
I want to paint a fiberglass vehicle with wagner electric sprayer. How would I thin something like tractor paint for that?
If it’s water based. Use water. If it’s oil based or enamel. Use thinner or reducer.
We have Sherwin Williams Showcase. It says the formula is 100% acrylic and does not need thinning for an airless sprayer but our sprayer uses an air compressor. Does that make a difference? Will water work or do we need a thinner?
We have tried to do research but are still a little confused. Definitely don’t want to mess up our paint haha! We appreciate any help!
Yes you need to thin it. For hvlp guns
Soo to thin out the paint just use water???
Yep. Acrylic and water base paint
I can’t believe all u used was water! We went out to buy thinner only to get clumpy paint and an unwanted high lol
Did you put thinner in latex paint?
thomas robinette I used thinner
@@imarasalas9652 water thins non-oil based paints. Thinner does not
How much price is it
I got mine for around $20 but people are telling me it is around $40 nowHey have you looked at jerky subscriptions? I just subscribed to one that sends different jerky from all over the USA to try. Click this link to check it out. bit.ly/3p8XCZk
Thank You for your comment and for watching
That really turned out nice, Van. I heard on TV that a little vanilla extract can do something but I can't remember what. Aren't I helpful? Sorry!! Great video!! Have a Happy Father's Day. :-)
I’ll look into the vanilla extract. I bet it would make the room smell good. I forgot about Father’s Day. Thank you shirl. I’m laid up right now. My diverticulitis flared up. Dang I’m hurting lol. I hope they didn’t plan a cookout. I’m on a liquid diet
@@VansWorld It takes out fumes and something else. Sorry you had such a bad attack. I get something like that to so I know how your hurting. My Dr. never helps me out with telling me what to do. I wasn't online yesterday but still hoping you get to feeling better and can enjoy Father's Day.
Wishing you the very best weekend. :-)
Does anyone know how much water I need for a 5 gallon bucket I have the Avanti sprayer help TIA
What happened to paint thinner
Latex paint is thinned using water. Oil base paint is thinned with paint thinner. 👍😁
i put turptine in mine idk if i fucked up my paint or not will it still work?
Not sure. I’ve never done that before. Let me know if it still works 👍😁
@@VansWorld it worked but ur not even suposed to thin latex paint with that stuff its for oil so idk wut it did but it worked so thats good
Why are you spraying thin lines? You're supposed to spray with the pattern you're using (vertical) in a horizontal pass or vice versa. Side to side with half overlap of last pass. If project is mission critical, you do a second coat using a vertical pass with a horizontal spray pattern.
' Bubble GUN'!
👍😁
Thank you. What do I use to thin out the paint if it's oil based?
Paint thinner 👍😁
@@VansWorld thank you sir :)
No problem 👍😁 have a great week
No paint thinner?
Water based paint is thinned with water
👍😁
I'm trying to tell a guy not to thin latex out with paint thinner no no.
sub you, goood
Is there is good temp to paint?
The paint your using should have temp ranges for proper use. It should state it on the can label
Room temp is ideal.
It will still spray, as long as it’s not too cold. The viscosity May be altered if it’s too cold. Too hot, you’ll get a rough finish because it will dry too fast. However the dry time is affected by the temp.
I bought this sprayer at Harbor Freight & after a little practice, it did a fair job. After cleaning it & putting it away. The next time I tried to use it,it wouldn’t spray no matter what tried. Poor product!
It does suck pretty bad.
So paint thinner is useless wtf else is the government not telling us. I just know learn how to correctly use a can opener, found out my dad is blackanese, and now paint thinner is not needed to thin paint. What am I supposed to do with these 5 cases of paint thinner I bought to paint my barn??? Trade it for water. It’s freee.
Paint thinner is used when thinning down oil base paints. Water is used for latex
Mix your latex for a HVLP gun.
waste of time. add your water and pour paint from one bucket into another. 6 times should mix it perfectly and it only takes seconds
Gotta have room to add the water 👍😁
@@VansWorld lol
should definitely not use just water to reduce paint ever
I saw this sprayer today its cheap, but sooooo noise
Very nice sharing my dear friend thanks like I wish you happy nice day🌹👍🌹
Three minutes to say “use water and watch for a steady stream” 😂
Lol.
That’s not airless.. that’s a hvlp
It’s airless. This method works for all sprayers.
Helluva job but for Christ sakes don’t use water if you’re thinning oil based paint. Your paint was water based so good to go but just like the saying goes, oil and water don’t mix.
👍😁
Where is viscosity cup???
This is not the right way by thining paint by guessing 😅😅😅
Thank you for the video
