  • So, How To thin paint to be used in a paint sprayer? A simple way I thin paint to be used in an Airless Paint Sprayer, HVLP Spray Gun and LVLP Spray Gun. I will be using this paint in a Krause and Becker electric airless paint sprayer. This is a very cheap Harbor Freight Paint Sprayer.
In this video, you will see I use bottled water to thin latex paint and this is the same way to thin water base primer as well. The paint you buy will give you a ratio of how much water it takes to thin out the paint. Use those instructions as a starting point. An old professional painter taught me this simple way to thin paint when I was just a boy trying to earn money for baseball cards and bubble gun lol.
Here is what HF website says about this product:
apply latex paints, water-based sealers, lighter body paints, and stains quickly and easily with this electric paint spray gun. This electric paint sprayer is perfect for general purpose painting projects in your shop, home or yard. The paint spray gun includes one extra replacement rod and cylinder assembly. Features include a high flow rate for better paint coverage, a durable 24 oz. polypropylene paint cup and a viscosity cup with hanger.

I was a little hesitant at first but your videos made it easy to paint my entire house with the Kraus & Becker sprayer! Thinning the latex properly, cleaning & maintaining the sprayer - your advice was the key element to my success. THANK YOU! My house is 30x80 and the siding is 9 foot high. Using a stepladder I was able to paint the entire house from start to finish in three hours. Front & back each took a half-hour and each long side took one hour.

Hello Angie... I'm going to be spraying Upol Anti Corrosive Expoy Primer on my truck that I sanded down to the metal and then I want to spray Raptor liner on top of that with a Fuji Industrial Spray Equipment PLATINUM-T70 Fuji 3005-T70 Q5 Platinum Quiet HVLP Spray System. I was to use the Fuji spray system for the primer and the Raptor liner. I feel that getting proper thinning of the paint to optimize atomization through the Fuji system will be key. I appreciate your insight about the Zahn cup... I have never heard of this tool until you mentioned it. So you are saying that in order for a paint to spray properly through an airless sprayer it should be thinned to where it takes 22 seconds to flow out of a Zahn cup? I would really appreciate your help with this technique.

Yeah if you thin down some paint and don’t use it all. The paint will sour and smell really bad from using city water. I thinned down some paint one time for my paint sprayer. Then poured the left over paint back into the can. The next time I used it , it had soured. I used it any way and the room smelled horrible for a good while. Bad experience. Haha.

Why are you spraying thin lines? You're supposed to spray with the pattern you're using (vertical) in a horizontal pass or vice versa. Side to side with half overlap of last pass. If project is mission critical, you do a second coat using a vertical pass with a horizontal spray pattern.

It will still spray, as long as it’s not too cold. The viscosity May be altered if it’s too cold. Too hot, you’ll get a rough finish because it will dry too fast. However the dry time is affected by the temp.
