    Both my ISX15's have leaked coolant at the block heater connection, so that's a good place to check for stains/leaks.
    Its the little gray electrical connector forward of the oil filter, just below the turbo inlet elbow. One of my trucks just had a bad o-ring at about 200K miles, the other one had a loose threaded connector right from the factory. It leaked from day one that we took delivery of the truck and I've tightened it up several times over the first 10K miles.

    I run the ISX 550hp Cummins in a 2013 Kenworth and I think it's a Bloody Good Motor but also goes through the coolant and yes the Three stage Engine Brake on it holds brilliantly.. on an 11 percent gradient she'll hold a 44 to 45ton Gross weight at 1750rpm in high 2nd in the low split at 50kph👍

    If it’s losing coolant good chance it’s EGR cooler

    • @MrStingray186

      isx have a rep of having a liner drop a few 1000th and lose coolant slowly at first and quicker as time goes by. 99% of the time it's head-related (liner and gasket). Egr cooler and Air compressor are very rarely the problems we have 6 trucks with ISX engines and it's almost clockwork they start having issues at the 500k mark with coolant. LOL front disc brakes and crankcase filters lol. Note Peterbilt says the bigger HP ISX has more problems with this coolant problems. We found this is true with our 550's and 600 which have failed.

    The biggest problem of those engine is the high pressure fuel pump has to be rebuilt every 300 to 400 k miles if not you are looking to damage the complete engine when it brakes , it happens to me rebuilt the pump is about $ 800 , and. The engine is $15 k my blew up cause that with just 612 k miles

    • @dilantorres213
      @dilantorres213 3 года назад +2

      Your engine blew up because of the ceramic plungers broke and destroyed your engine, besides that nothing working with the pumps that can destroy your engine

    • @alexzamora6700
      @alexzamora6700 3 года назад +1

      Yes them ceramic plungers will shatter after time . The ones that u really need to worry about and replace are the tappets in the pump. Those will also shatter and send all them metal shavings into the engine !!

  • @dougkratz5269
    @dougkratz5269 5 лет назад +11

    Nice overview of the motor bud. I need to make two comments though, you should also point out the high-pressure fuel injection unit on this motor. It is a common failure issue and will completely wipe out a motor if it is not addressed. and two, if you're losing a gallon of coolant a month, there is a serious problem somewhere in the making. I would never just accept that it's" because of the variable geometry turbocharger". It's going somewhere, and it ain't doing any good. If it were mine, I would figure it out in a hurry.if neglected, it will definitely rear its ugly head with a lot of zeros on the bill. Truck safe bro

    But i've had extremely bad experience with DD15.
    My 2012 with only 382k miles needs an overhaul, gonna get rid of it.
    What should i watch for on the cummins isx?
    Thanks.

      manuel the only problems I had in the year and a half I drove this truck was with the Turbo Actuator. After I ran an active regen it just quit. They found the def doser had stopped working also. So they replaced both and burned out the D.P.F. filter. After that no problems with the engine.
      The chassis on the other hand gave them a headache. Mostly the front axle. The rear spring hanger and king pins. Both being replaced twice. In my opinion they waited to long between services to grease it.
      But TMC is selling all of their 388/389s. They said the same thing about the DEF system . If you idle it at night or even during the day much it will give you problems. I didn't so I didn't have much trouble. Get an APU to eliminate the high idle time and buy a spare DPF filter so when you need one burned out you don't have to sit around waiting three or four days. Remember the filter is ceramic and can be damaged easily.
      Good luck and stay safe out there.

    • @mackdaddy1911a1
      @mackdaddy1911a1  5 лет назад +2

      manuel I almost forgot. It used a gallon of oil every two weeks and a gallon of coolant every month. No leaks that I could detect. It had 600,000 on it when I left TMC and was still pulling it's ass off. My last load was one of the 54,570 pound ingot. It was AWESOME. Best Jake brake I have ever used. Not only hold the truck back but would slow it down with a 54570 lbs ingot on the wagon.
      I heard there is an upgrade for the exhaust aftertreatment system. But it isn't cheap.
      TMC 's 579s gave them a lot of headaches so buyer be ware.

      @@mackdaddy1911a1 My cascadia did gave me problems, but not to many to be honest, that sucker just broke down and needed an overhaul, never gave me sings.
      Why year is that engine?
      I've heard bad stories about DD15 and cummins, and i have extremely bad luck with DD15, so i guess is time to go for cummins.
      That's a lot of problems to watch for, I've heard the fuel pump can mess up the whole engine, hopefully they have updated it with the new version.
      and to replace the crankcase filter with the newer version.
      Not sure if it has an APU, They will email me the info.
      Thanks for the information!
      Be safe

      manuel this was a 2012 year model engine. To be honest I wouldn't't buy a truck newer than a 02. No egr, no DPF, no def. I would find an 02 or older, rebuild it and sit back and not worry.

      @@mackdaddy1911a1 that's what i really wanna do, but I want to sell the cascadia 1st.
      Freightliner is charging me 29k for an overhaul.
      I know i can get it done for 10-15k with a good mechanic i know, all he does is rebuilt engines.
      But i was not ready for an overhaul, So i will try to save some money, sell it and get me a 2007 600kw with a cat.
      Is getting harder to find older truck in okay condition.
      Hopefully everything works out.

      Kevin Carnahan no I havent. TMC's 579 autos are the same.
      Back in 2000 I drove an International with a Cat 3406E that was rated at 435 but had 4.11 rear ends. Talk about puliing power. No other truck I have ever been in could pull with it. Chewed up a 500 Detroit coming east out of Eagle Colorado on I-70. Going up Veil pass I passed the guy. We had identical loads of 54" wide sheet rock. I couldnt even see that truck when I topped the pass. But the jakes on this Cummins' is flat out awesome.

We had theEmission junk deleted and set to 575 horse runs a lot better but still wouldn’t hold a candle to my old 500 horse c15 acert cat. And I think if they really tried they could’ve shoved fuel filter a little further back and harder to reach. Friends of mine run a shop so they can fully strip down a 60 series Detroit for an overhaul in less time than it takes to put a head gasket in an ISX. Not saying they’re bad engine mine does run good but it definitely is not my old cat and I wouldn’t wanna have to do much work on it

And every truck brakes no truck is reliable.. Every company is selling kenworth and buying Scania , Volvo or Mercedes. They got more power they are easier to driver and they are more comfy. I spoke to the guy he had a kenworth and he said at the end of the day he coudnt walk because of the heavy clutch and his back was killing him. The competition from European trucks, with the exception of Volvo, might help. Japanese cars made the big three improve their products but the Japanese are still better. None of our truck engine manufacturers have a good quality product after the first 200,000 miles. All the new engines have the same problems. EGR valve, DPF, DEF, and the associated sensors and hardware. From 2003 to today that is where all the major problems begin and end. My old 2001 Mack Vision (CX-613) had 1,163,000 plus miles on it when I sold it. Very few problems the entire time I owned it. Its 12 liter 427 hp Mack engine drug me around the states no problem. Maybe not as fast as others but I got there and didn't have to have a mechanic follow behind to pick up the bits and pieces that the newer trucks tend to drop off along the way. Owned it from 2006 to 2014.

      Well maybe volvo that's made in USA is shit. But here in Au i drive mercedes actros 2001 it has 1.3milion KM and it's still going strong no issue's with engine and transmission. It has 440 horse's and it pulls 40 tonnes with it everyday. Even the new mack is using volvos engine now and freightliner is with Mercedes.
