      Thanks. That makes sense. At that time, I don't think I was aware that an election was coming up.

    Wuh Amazing place Doug you found. I remember my late dad brought us to watch Goldeneye at RexKL in the 90s when I was a kid..

    Many people still read paper books, and guide books are still published. I'm picking one up today.

    They are not homeless. The guy wearing safety vest is actually a city council worker hanging out

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  Год назад +1

      True enough. The other guy was clearly homeless, however. And I've seen many more sleeping up there at night. It's a pretty common sleeping spot for the homeless in this neighborhood.

    Yes it’s very sad that books don’t get as much attention as they used to, because of all the other media that overwhelms our time. There’s a great second hand bookshop where I live in Pattaya and I found a big hardback book by the great DJ John Peel it’s his autobiography for only around $1 and very good it is, but unfortunately it will probably take me 2 years to actually read it 😢

    Time 10:48 A small correction and additional information from the Internet : The Rex Cinema was operated by the Shaw Brothers, and later on by Golden Screen Cinemas before shutting its doors in 2002. After being converted into a backpacker hostel named Red Dragon, another fire gutted the building in 2007 August that year at the cinema-turned-hostel, about 50 backpackers were resting in the building, fortunately no one was injured in the fire. However, the three-storey structure was damaged as firemen spent an hour and a half to put out the blaze (The burn mark of the cinema screen hall is still there even during your visit). Later over the years, the building was used as low-cost housing, and even an entertainment karaoke outlet for a short period of time.
    "The cinema hall was left in disuse therefore it became a hotbed of drug users and squatters. Wanting to revive the nostalgic theatre, a project was set up in late 2019 to turn Rex into a creative space where local entrepreneurs and artistes could flourish. Different concepts and ideas have been tried out and the Rex KL is still in morpho stage. As the saying goes, the rest is history.

      Thank you for sharing this story. Is it owned by a different person who has allowed this or was it sold by the group that now run it?

      Thanks for the detailed history. I don't think any of that was mentioned on the official REXKL website. I think that's the only website that I looked at before going there. I was left with the impression that the building just sat empty from 2002 to 2019. The real history sounds like it was much more interesting. And it seems like this building is susceptible to fires. It keeps catching on fire over its history. 🙂

    Adventure playground. If you don't enjoy books, you would enjoy the stepping! The stalls open til late, hence the late opening. Upmarket prices. But you can see school kids in uniform there.

Just look at all those cars fly by! The bookstore indeed has a unique layout, it keeps you entertained and curious at the same time. 😀

    That bookstore was stunning! Not sure it would pass the UK health & safety beaurocrats though.
    Still at least you could check out a book on "living with a fractured sacrum" while you wait for the ambulance to arrive
