  • An introduction to the concept of minor aspects in astrology, with astrologers Rick Levine and Chris Brennan.
Minor aspects are generally categorized as any aspects besides the classical five "major" aspects that were originally introduced in western astrology around the 1st century BCE, which are the conjunction, opposition, trine, square, and sextile.
The minor aspects include the semi-sextile, quincunx, semi-square, sesqui-square, quintile, bi-quintile, septile, and others.
Several of the minor aspects used today were first introduced by the German astronomer and astrologer Johannes Kepler in the 17th century CE.
During the course of the episode we discuss the history of this concept and some of the debates surrounding it, and then later look at some charts to see how minor aspects work in practice.

I loved Rick's thoughts about them being metaphysical versus physical. They show the "gifts" a person brought into life to help with their life path. Their "special sauce" or magic qualities. I'm going to call them the Awesome Sauce Aspects. I'm available to brainstorm. LOL

So much more than minor. I already love how it sounds to call them harmonic frequencies and geometric vibrations, and maybe even better play with "Sub/Meta=Tones" of the Cosmic Orchestra which hints about midpoint structures that are usually involved. Thank you for sharing this much!!

I think Rick would have less of a problem with using the term 'minor' aspects if he looked at it from a musical standpoint. A minor key is no more important, beautiful, or significant than a major key. They're only different in tone.
    Amazing episode as always. 👏🏼

Actually, I go to the musical major/minor when people refer to them as minor... but it's NOT about what I think. I know how important these aspect are. I get tired of hearing astrologers say, "Sure, I use quintiles, but I only give them a one-degree orb because they are minor aspects." I think, after this episode, I'll simply refer to them as "Harmonic" aspects. I think Kepler would approve.

The explanation of harmonics isolates how I energetically feel aspects within a chart at first glance. I empathically feel the energies before I dive in, and they sound like vibrations of energies and sound waves in discussion.
That we come in waves of colour and sound, and vibrate with every atom to the beat of our soul’s drumming pattern - the natal chart. That transits may dance with our energetic signature and teach us new footing, new graces and moves with every second, we become dance partners to the cosmos.
Excellent video, thank you both for your insight and dedication to astrology beyond the conventional textbook’s confines.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing. What a terrific presentation and discussion. The back and forth between the two of you looking at charts from a traditional then the special sep-quin perspective was a tour de force. It seemed easy to have a foot in both worlds. Actually, the septile family perspective and the quintile family perspective seem quite distinct from each other; I would just as soon see them as completely separate, with their own persentations, rather than lumping them together as the "untraditional ones." But that might have taken an extra hour.
In the Buddhist teachings I have encountered (and I think this is in common with the older Hindu teachings), there are (at least) 6 realms of being which include many sub-realms: god realms (devaloka), jealous god realms (asuraloka), human realms, animal realms, hungry ghost realms (pretaloka), and hell realms (narakaloka). These can be considered psychologically, as emotional realms or states within human experience, which is an extremely valuable perspective for understanding emotions. But these realms were also traditionally considered as actual different types of beings. Typically, humans experience themselves, other humans and animals with ordinary perception, but less commonly do they experience gods, jealous gods, ghosts, or hell spirits/beings. For example, I have seen or felt ghosts only a handful of times in my life, but many have seen them much more frequently. Demons are not usually seen but are encountered, for example, as extreme and sudden emotional states. Anyway, one time someone asked my Buddhist teacher, who was present to all sorts of beings, why most ordinary humans don't perceive ghosts on a regular basis, that for most of us that's uncommon to see a ghost, a kind of special event. He said, and this is a third hand account, that we vibrate at a different frequency than them, the implication being that some people are able to vibrate in ways that allow certain kinds of perception, the perception of certain worlds, that others don't.
This seemed to be a broader context to consider the discussion of septiles and quintiles, especially the septiles. I think this is a way of looking at psychological complexes in general, why people with similar or complementary pathologies or geniuses attract and can "see" each other. There are all sorts of realms within human realm, and the alien nature of these is defined, in part, by the conventional vibrations that most people are most used to. The alien is just something that goes against the conventional, to that way of thinking Maybe that's what "witnessing" refers to in traditional astrology, those mainstream aspects: the ways that most people vibrate most of the time that allows them to see what's in the horizon of possibility. But it also may be true that victims and abusers find each other because of complementary vibrations, or, for that matter, fish and fishermen.
It's been extremely helpful to me to consider this notion of aversion, since 5 of the 7 visible planets in my natal chart are averse to the Ascendent. That was a huge piece of information that really got me in to traditional astrology a couple of years ago, watching the Astrologypodcasts. A deep debt of gratitude to CB, AC, and KS. But defining the other 4 whole sign aspects as "aversions" doesn't really say anything positive about what they are but just that they are not the standard aspects, the standard ways of seeing. That is, it defines them in terms of what they don't see, instead of looking into what other kinds of sight may be involved. It's a kind of cop-out, making the ancients look lazy, though, again, it's was a tremendous insight for me to see that those aversions did not correspond to what I thought was defined by seeing or witnessing. And the norms of how most people see things is an extremely important reference point that must never be lost track of. To lose track of how most people see things is quite rightly characterized as crazy. This is not to say that to see things otherwise is crazy, but to lose track of or ignore how most people see things is a very uncompassionate approach, arrogant, just pushing a trip. It's important to keep at least a foot in the conventional world.

Great response which reminded me of why I “connect” / “see” a few people who also “see” me on quite a regular basis in the town I live. They may seem like ordinary people out and about but for some reason we always notice each other to the point I’ve started saying “hi” to some of them without ever having talked with them and probably I won’t talk to them. I have a septile between my sun and my moon.

When we listen to music that leaves out the minor keys, it sounds like a march (Onward Christian Soldiers is an example--many North American Evangelical Christian hymns favour major keys). The minor keys provide lovely tones, add nuance, are prevalent in music from the Gaelic isles, Zydeco, Jazz, Blues and more liturgical forms of worship (Catholic, Anglican etc...). I vote we continue to refer to these aspects as minor (keys) which make life rich and interesting.

Not positive? Positive? Then? Now? When? What? Experiencing a bull's eye view means the observer resonates with some truth being-ness at that present moment; this resonance is not subject to further doubting or questioning but invites furthering into evolving that being's-- next steps. After all, comments and opinions arise as, in and from the individual's interpretation display of h/her lens/angle on the presenting view. Hope this is helpful. Thank you.

This was great. Got me thinking that we will see language change in our lifetimes pertaining to astrology and meta physics. At first I thought something simple like "modern" aspects could work but there does seem to be a quantum jump between the 4th and the 5th. So... harmonic aspects, meta aspects (though social media news is quickly deteriorating how awesome the word meta is), immaterial or perhaps non-linear. I'm a new student to professional astrology and this is discussion really gets me going, so thanks again for your work!

This was a great episode. I came to it as a sceptic that only uses the five major configurations and only watched because I teach on a course that includes the 'metaphysical aspects'. Yet I enjoyed every minute and while not 100% convinced I thought Rick's presentation of two charts for each of his subjects was a very good way of integrating them, as a second pass, or a look to see if anything had been missed was a very useful way of using both 'sets' of aspects to assess a single life or event.. My thanks to both of you for giving me food for thought and helping me recognise that I might be missing something.

I have 30 years of experience with these so called ‘minor’ aspects and for me it is not that they are just adding a little extra detail. They are shading light on major part of peoples lives and relationships, that, when only using the so called ‘major’ aspects would remain completely unseen. I totally agree with Rick Levine. Although I would have liked less charts and going deeper into the interpretation of only a few. Just to make the experience of these aspects more profound to the listeners of this podcast. So that people can finally start using them. Further more, I really missed, at least, the noviles. I understand the reasoning behind this, that they are not, lets say, the primal ancestor of their harmonic series and that they are more subtle being higher up in number, but this also applies for quincunxes and semi quadrants, that were treated as well here. I want to stress that noviles are also very important and indicate to me true spirituality. In the chart of an individual they indicate being in commune with the universe, just being here now in total bliss. Without the lala stuff of the H7 aspects. And in a relationship the noviles indicate true commune between people, a deep feeling of bliss when people connect to each other. As I mentioned before, I claim this to be true not only from knowledge, but from many years of experiencing live with astrology as my close companion.
To give yet another example of how important all aspects are, take a close look at Hitlers birth chart. Note that if you look at his chart, with only the ‘major aspects’ you will not grasp that you are looking at the chart of one of the biggest mass murderers of modern time. Venus and Mars squared to Saturn gave this man a deep rooted inferiority complex through the experience and inner conviction of never being recognised by authoritative figures. and in that sense a huge ambitious drive to overrule those authoritative symbols. But even if you take the Neptune Pluto conjunction into consideration, this does not explain him being a fanatic mass murderer. Now take the H5 and H7 aspects into consideration. His Sun in Taurus biSeptile on Saturn in Leo in combination with his Moon / Jupiter conjunction in Capricorn H7 triSeptile on his MC inspired him with a vision that he was the chosen traditional leader of the revival of the great Roman empire. In this vision he would become a kind of emperor, overruling all authority. With his North node in Cancer in IX, his evolutionary goal so to say, was to provide the desperate mass of working-class people with a great new vision of glory and with his node septile his ascendant he could inspire them into this vision. Now, you can find a lot of people like him in mad asylums. But now look at his H5 aspects. He has, what Rick Levine calls a ‘golden Yod’, of Neptune conjunct Pluto quintile Saturn, both biQuintile the Moon Jupiter conjunction, his great vision, on the apex. This ‘golden Yod’ is also connected to his Ascendant that functioned as a portal trough what all this creative energy was expressed into the world in a very charismatic way. Now I do not want to say that H5 aspects are evil or destructive, but do note that creativity and destructiveness are counterparts. Sometimes you have to be destructive to the old forms to create new ones out of them. Neptune conjunct Pluto quintile Saturn in his chart works out as a very strong headed deeply revolutionary intensely extreme and total destructive aspect in his chart. But also in the horrible gift to organise and lead an army in such a way, with such a discipline, that hey could took on a war against the whole world. The combination of the H5 and H7 aspects show a man that is inspired in a ‘great’ vision of reviving the Roman Empire as gods chosen leader. And his creative powers (with the destructive Neptune conjunct Pluto quintile Saturn) gave him the charisma to empower the mass. Gave the working-class people a new vision, a new way out of their misery, a supposed way to glory. All fed by the misery the Mars / Venus conjunction square Saturn indicates.

Gosh, Thank YOU BOTH so much! This has been a real massive revelation for me...
My strongest Ptolemaic aspect, an almost exact trine (00'51) from Venus (2H) Pisces to Neptune (10H) in Scorpio I now realise is heavily underscored by an almost exact quintile (00'13) from Neptune to my Sun in Aquarius (1H) and part of a golden triangle with my Sun/Mercury conjunction (1H) and Saturn in Aries (3H).
I have a very strong Aquarian chart and now see when I look at my complete picture, Neptune/Venus is equally strong as an influence and explains my artistic bent... no surprise that I am now delving into David Hamblin's work to understand more.
A whole bundle of gratitude @RickLevine and @ChrisBrennan for what you bring to the World. I LOVE your discussions, and am happy there was no power outage this time... also loving the dry wit, I giggle along at those wry comments made by Chris... ;L)

imo the relationship by sign is what decides the quality of an aspect. There was a blogger who did a small study of his readers and his amateur finding was that the quality of minor aspects like the septile, semi-square etc. was down to the traditional whole sign relationship, the difference between minor aspects didn't matter so much as which whole signs were involved. i.e. if the signs are trine then the minor aspect would be positive even if it was a "hard" minor aspect etc.
Quincunxes and semi-sextiles are powerful and they should be considered major aspects imo. The whole sign relationship of the inconjunct is awkward and difficult, when there's an aspect in orb it's usually particularly difficult. The traditional idea is that there's no interaction whatsoever between two inconjunct points, but it's easy to see after observing say transiting inconjuncts for a while that this is not the case. The two points will interact but have tremendous difficulty working together, maybe they cannot "see" eachother but they certainly effect eachother and in a powerful way.
Out of sign aspects seem to contradict the sign-relationship theory, yet they are actually valid from my observation though not as strong. imo what's going on here is we're seeing two zodiacs at play, if an aspect is out of sign tropically it's in-sign sidereally, and imo that's why the aspect still has an effect on some level.

One interesting thing about the yod. Electrically it functions either as a transmitter or a receiver. The sextile aspect works like a capacitor, the two inconjuncts as inductors and the opposition midpoint of the sextile as the antenna. There is a resistance core voltage drop at the center of the circle.

What a great lecture! I would never argue with Rick about astrology, but having studied color healing I would like to add that I was taught that there are only 4 colors of the rainbow and the other colors are made by overlapping, where orange is red and yellow overlapping, green is yellow and sky blue overlapping and indigo is sky blue and purple overlapping. Potentially the rainbow has many more colors. Rick says indigo was added because of some Christian theology, but using colored glass or even plastic filters for floodlights you can see that indigo is made by colors overlapping. Rick says septiles are otherworldly energy leaking in and my color teacher said humans would see indigo when they are evolved enough, so that confirms his understanding. God (or the creative force) does indeed use sevens!

Narrowing orb entirely makes sense, with it being proportional to interval. If you have a 10 degree orb for everything you're going to have all aspects all the time, which just muddies the astrology, not filling in gaps. Thus specificity is lost. You'll read a chart as a textbook instead of a concise novel. Diminishing orbs I argue make the aspects even more poignant, special, valuable.

    • @michaelcarter2633
      @michaelcarter2633 2 года назад

Orbs don’t mean a lot there’s multiple asteroids and patterns formed depending on the orb. Sometimes two planets can be 10 degree orb difference but they both touch two important fixed stars or connect to two different patterns and still work together with the 10 degree orb, this 10 degree orb would be stronger than a closer orb. It matters about the asteroid stars and patterns they make this is why u can find a person with sun conjunct Pluto 8 degrees and also meet a 0 degree conjunction and either could be more intense, this is why basically all athletes have all different types of orbs and many “minor aspect” configurations

Chris, Love your content! Your mind is a mercurial wonderland! Love your intellectualism, professionalism and how you casually reference info from 100 BCE! - I think it is fine to make a distinction between aspects and the weight they carry. It is human nature to place a hierarchy of perceived importance but will always reside with the user to ascertain impact. Best, your Scorpio sibling.

Brilliant. Both astrologers are on fire here. I have been leaning towards a harmonic interpretation of astrology for many years and the more I look at it that way the more it fits. The horoscope was originally 10 signs and Harvey Spencer Lewis, the founder of AMORC, wrote a book based on a division of the zodiac by 14 or 7 by 2, with a mystical based interpretation, of course.
