How to FIX Flickering LED Lights & LED lights that won't Turn Off with Dimmer Switch

  • Hi, this video shows you an easy fix for LED lights that flicker and won't turn off when using Dimmer Switches. If you have changed over from Halogen / Incandescent lamps to LED Lamps and you are having problems then by doing the same method as shown in the video it will hopefully fix the problem. The long term solution is to get a LED dimmer fitted as it will save you more money in the long run.
    Many thanks Vince

Cheers mate, I’ve just sat and watched about 10 different videos all going into crazy detail and re-soldering this and that to solve the flickering light fault, but within 2:32 seconds of watching your video I’ve just cured the fault. Brilliant 👍

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. My LED light bulbs were flickering for hours after I turned the light switch off. Your little trick worked perfectly. I added 1 incandescent bulb to the light fixture, and the flickering went away. You rock!

Cheers mate, this just saved me a ton of headache! I've been trying to run LED strip lights off of a dimmer (the kind used for lighting shows), and even with the dimmer powered off but plugged in, the strips still draw enough power to light up. By plugging in an incandescent bulb, they now behave as they should. Brilliant!

Thanks, mate! I had the same problem with my traditional 15 branch crystal chandelier. When I changed the flame-shape old fashioned incandescent to LED flame-shape bulbs it would not turn off and it flickered. For now I took your advice and replaced one of the bulbs, and it shuts off completely.

Wow. Thanks. I was going to do some thing I was not sure about with the ground? by pulling the switch and getting in the back. Instead, after your suggestion, I installed 1, 60 Watt incandescent bulb with my now 5, 3.3 Watt, 40 Watt equivalent LED bulbs and voila. Steady Eddy now and I can not actually look at the lights directly without eye discomfort as opposed to relative dimness before. So a new understanding and the cure. I call that a win, win.

great video, very informative, thanks. The reason i searched for your video is because I have a light cluster that is fitted with LED bulbs and flickers badly when turned on. As It happens, my fitting is identical to the last one shown in your video. Interesting thing though, there are two lights in the kitchen, the aforementioned one and a normal E27 fitting on the other side of the kitchen, neither one on a dimmer switch. When I turn on the LED cluster on its own, after a few minutes it starts flickering badly, almost like a strobe light, the flickering is greatly reduced when I switch on the normal E27 on the other side of the room, but with it's own separate switch and power source. Any pointers what could be the cause and more importantly, a solution if possible!!

Tip: If replacing GU10 downlights pay attention to the "beam angle". Most are 36 degree which i find give uneven lighting. You can get wider beam angles like 100 or 120 and I find these give more uniform lighting (but with a bit more glare). Your choice. I also recommend going for LEDs that produce around 400 Lumens or more.

is it a MUST to install a dimmer driver? Because I don't have a false ceiling to place it
    I'm using 6 x Philips 4.5W LED Dimmable (Workable within 170v-240v)
*one of the purpose of dimmer driver is reduces the output voltage, means I don't need a dimmer driver... Am I right?

You might be able to stabilise things, or at least eliminate bleed through, by connecting a suppression capacitor to the fitting
I had a CFL in a stair light that produced awful radio interference from the capacitive leakage in the 2 way switch wiring - LED may also be an issue on a stair circuit.

@@lucywaked3103 Amateur radio is my experience, so I know a fair bit about electrical interference. The capacitance of wiring is going to be small, I'd be surprised if it was more than 10 nanoFarads, so a 0.1 microFarad mains class (X2) suppression capacitor would act as a 10:1 voltage divider (or more) - and a capacitor does not consume real power.
LED bulbs (see BigClive's teardown) usually / should have a discharge resistor built in to ensure they turn off promptly instead of fading to a dim glow, which also dissipates slight leakage

I get that you are supposed to have bulbs that draw within the min and max wattage that the dimmer is rated for but i was told that led dimmable bulbs need a special dimmer that isnt just a variable resistor but it actually flashes the led bulbs on and off very fast and the longer the pause between fast flashes makes the led bulb seem more dim. Im supprised to see a standard dimmer work with your led lights

Thank you! Can you explain why a lamp with 8 small bulbs only works if I insert up to 7 LEDs and leave one halogen bulb in, but won't work if I replace all of the halogen bulbs with LEDs? I guess it is something to do with the resistance or total load. The switch is a simple on/off switch, not a dimmer, but it seems to be a pretty similar situation.

    • @Mymatevince

If it is not on a dimmer then could it be a low voltage lamp with a built in transformer in the base of the lamp so for example in the UK a 12v light fitting instead of a 240v.

I don't have a flickering issue, just the rotary dimmer turns the bulb completely off at around 50 percent turned. It still covers full brightness range. With old high wattage bulbs, when dimmer fully turned off there was still some light. How to fix that so they turn off when dimmer is turned fully instead of half way

It's not the minimum load that's the problem here. It's the lack of a neutral at the lightswitch which means the dimmer has to derive its supply via the load. With no hard on/off switch as here there's enough current passed to light LED lamps and make CFLs flicker.
The way this used to be dealt with was to connect an X2-rated capacitor in parallel with the load (lamps here) with a value high enough to pass the leakage current and stop the lamps lighting.
But dimmer makers Varilight have come up with what looks like a better solution under the name GlowFix - TLC Online do them for £17.52. (Disclaimer: I've not tried this device.)

I have two smart globe suite led bulbs and they’re both powered by a dimmer switch.
on the app the different colours work just fine in full brightness (theyre not very bright in led colours) but when i turn colours to warm or cool like color temperatures... they flicker when they’re above 2% brightness. so they only turn solid (dont flicker) when its 1% brightness. also my dimmer switch is on full brightness already.
also when i turn the LEDs off via app, the dimmer light indicator moves up & down. they advised on the manual to never turn switch off bc we can turn the bulbs via the app.

I have one of those ceiling lamps with the fans attached to it and if I put three LED bulbs in it it is super dim but if I put two LED bulbs and a regular bulb in there it works just fine WTF also those bulbs are designed to work with dimmer switches they say so right on the box of the LEDs. If you use one regular bulb like in this video do you still get the cost Savings of the LEDs?
Just an interesting side fact whatever lamp I have uses a weird shaped bowl because I had to go to three different stores just to find a light bulb that fit in it and they were non-dimmable I don't care about the dimmer so I would leave it at full brightness but I don't want to risk it

Far better solution is to add back one or two wire-wound (non-electronic) lighting transformer(s). They are rated for continuous use, and unlike the halogen bulb, they can be left there indefinitely without failure. Usually one of them is enough to stabilise most leading edge dimmers.
BTW - those dodgy 2-wire dimmers without any switch are really dodgy.

Does this mean that when ever the switch was off before changing to the L E D S , that the fixtures used a small amount of electricity when turned off ? And they still use a small amount after changing to the L E D S ? If so, then you would think that the manufacturers would make a switch that would shut off the flow of electricity 100%. After all we have always been told to conserve electricity ! Thank You

  • @micheleagnello7058
    @micheleagnello7058 4 года назад

No, you will not save money. Electrons will flow anyway thru the halogen (will act like a resistor) plus when you turn on the lights you will light up a 25W halogen instead of 3W. For sure you will turn lights off, but you will still consume somenthing that you can't "see". Usually this is solved with a capacitor at the lamp or a capacitor but probably some electrical absorption will be still present
