  • LED Light Dimmer Flicker
    If you have recently upgraded to LED light fixtures as part of a renovation or you have installed LED light fixtures in a new construction project, you may have run into an issue when the dimmer switch was installed.
    Frequently dimmer switches flicker or blink when they are not compatible with the LED light fixtures that they are being used with.
    In this video, Renos shares a recent experience with LED light dimmer flicker and what he did to resolve the issue.

    • @CammonRandle

      Can anyone explain why this is??? The fixture, unless it’s a smart home is just a collection of materials that make it so that the LED bulb can receive electricity through contacts... essentially a super complex fancy wire that you can twist a bulb into. So how is the “fixture” effecting flicker at all?

    • @theusconstitution1776
      @theusconstitution1776 2 года назад

      @@CammonRandle so the high hat fixture that goes up in the ceiling basically is an Edison female light socket that’s wired to your home wiring like any other light the LED is completely self-contained to which you could screw in the mail Edison socket that comes with it in any light fixture in your home and a lamp and it should work the actual fixture of a high hats up in the ceiling is just a socket so you’re saying you bought the high hat and the light to LED light as one unit and you’re changing the whole fixture? Logic says the Edison female that’s in the Metal fixture has no electronics in it I guess I’m confused

    There are some led compatible dimmer switches that have an adjustable load dial so you can fine tune it to solve the flickering issues becasue not all manufacturers have the same specs. Try that next time if you experience flickering.

    • @RENOS4PROSJOES
      @RENOS4PROSJOES  4 года назад +3

      It's not always that simple. A light that flickers in one property, or one location, may not flicker in another. The lights that I had a problem with were defective. However, dimmer flicker is also a common problem with properly functioning LEDs. Frequently its a compatibility issue between the fixture and the dimmer switch. You have to read the fixture specs for guidance on recommended switches. There is sometimes trial and error involved. And in some more complex scenarios, you may need to call an electrician. I've added links to the lights featured in this video in the description box. I did not the defective one.

    Where you using a fixture made for incandescent or halogen and using LED bulb in it? For example max watts 60 or 100 watts etc? This sort of sounds like needed dimmable LED Bulb for standard dimmer for incandescent. When using LED bulb in a fixture that was originally meant for incandescent with higher max watts you should use a “dimmable” LED bulb, as compatible with standard dimmer( standard dimmer is originally meant for incandescent or halogen, before the LED Technology was introduced and And utilize for residential/commercial lamps aka bulbs, as before was used for on/off indicator button that the stereo system or TV or VCR was on /off with the red or green light.) LED light emitting diodes. Also doing research. I’m a lighting expert and see conflicting info on this topic or not enough info for me to compare notes. Love your videos! Understanding lighting has become much more complex in recent years. As to the Evolution of LEDs…. 🤯😳🥸🤓😉

    someone said buying and installing LEDs would save us money. So far, that hasn't been true! Contractor installed ceiling can LED in our remodel. Two banks were on dimmers. Rest were on/off switches. I wanted all dimmables and matched what he installed. After about 2 months, one circuit of 4 lights started blinking. Then, several days later, another bank (that he installed) started blinking. Expecting the rest to start also. I set the dimmer half way down, and it stopped the blinking, for about 20 minutes, then it started blinking at that setting. UGH! Not happy with LEDs so far!

    The wattage you have is too high for the bulbs (LEDs always much less power than traditional bulbs) and the result is that they flicker. You can solve this usually by adding in a resistor in parallel to the circuit - some dimmer switch manufacturers supply these so that you don't need so spend time working out the resistance that's necessary.

      If your lights have been working fine and they just started flickering all of a sudden, it's more likely to be the switch. If you are installing new lights and a new dimmer, the problem could be with either the switch or the fixtures. Some trial and error may be required. Additionally, some have mentioned using jumpers on the switch to remedy the problem, but I have never had to do that. Hope this helps.

      Now with that said: In this video, I'm speaking based on my specific scenario. In this scenario, the light fixtures were all installed as part of the project. And, the new lights did not flicker until the standard switch was replaced with a dimmer switch. In order to fix the issue I replaced only the recessed lights controlled by the dimmer switch. When I returned the fixtures, I found out that many people (electricians and contractors) that had recently purchased the same lights returned them due to the same issue. Once the lights were changed out the flickering stopped immediately. Hope this helps. Sorry, I can't give you an exact answer.

    My led lights flicker now and then, i.e. they are stable until about one hour has passed and then they flicker for a few minutes and then they are stable for a while, like an hour, and then they flicker and then....repeat, repeat, etc, etc. Very frustrating. Any ideas on this? We have various led light fixtures including recessed pot lights, a chandelier and 3 hanging led lights installed in one open space and they all flicker. We also are using dimmer switches but the flickering seems to be independent of the flicker, i.e.adjusting the dimmer does not affect the flickering. Any ideas?

      @@Kelsonmassif Yes, our contractor changed the dimmer switches to a better brand . The original were Eaton which were about $15 each. The replacements are a higher brand priced at about $60 each. Then he tested with a voltage meter at the switch and the light fixture to ensure we are getting 120v at each, which we are. He also installed an on/off switch to replace one dimmer on the chandelier in the entrance (i.e. we had 2 dimmers on one chandelier light, now we have one dimmer and one on/off switch) which resolved that flickering issue . Now, we just have occasional flickering , like once every 2 hours or so. We think it is our hydro provider which is the cause. For now, I am happy.

    Should have talked to an electrician, sounds like your wattage was too high for the dimmer. Each row of lights on their own switch. Had the same issue and the switch maker and the light maker said the same thing.

      Believe it or not, I actually did. This video was published before I had a chance to return the LEDs. When I did finally return them, the counter sales associate told me that they had so electrical contractors return the same model light, that the owner of the supply house contacted the manufacturer to complain. Thanks for your comment!

    There 12watrs
    How can a dimmer work.
    The dimmer cant go any lower.
    With a resistor the dimmer can start where its supposed to at 65 watts

      Hey man. Are you saying that an ohm resistor would prevent the flicker because the amount of power delivery is over excessive to what the light requires?

    What a pain! I will just stick to my incandescent bulbs.

      Sometimes replacing the fixture is the best option and sometimes it is not. I recently had to order a led dimmer switch online due to a compatibility issue. There is a seemingly unlimited number of led dimmer switch options and many of them are not sold in stores. However, the big-box retailers are definitely working to improve their in-store selection. I see more options on the shelf now than there were when this video was created just a few months back. Thank you for watching and commenting.

    My lights are doing the flickering, do I need to buy lights with smaller wattage?

      Hi! Unfortunately, this type of issue is best diagnosed in person by a qualified professional. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

    Or just live without dimmable switches and just use toggle switches

    lmao already throw away the boxes all 48 of them,,, the problem was not flickering ,,it was the led were not turning off and were not able to be dimmed meanwhile the dimmer switch worked perfect with normal halogen light

      Just curious, were they dimmable LED bulbs? Just trying to keep up with the trends and lighting and how they behave in recent times as technology is always improving and making things better. Sort of sounds like a dimmable LED bulbs for a standard dimmer switch

    Returning all these lights back to the store is not resolving the issue.... I'm a hundred percent sure you had problem with wiring or just one of the lights was defective, casing all other lights flickers

      The fixtures were defective. When I returned them to the electrical supply house, they told me that tons of electrical contractors had returned them for the very same problem.

      The point he makes clearly is that it’s convoluted, and the dude saved me 30 minutes of Reddit forums to come to that conclusion.
