- A central theme of Zionism is that Jews could regain dignity by returning to agricultural labor, after centuries of urban restrictions. Zionists often overstated their agricultural achievements, partly to justify Jewish immigration to Palestine by portraying it as an uninhabited desert, suitable for settlement without harming existing inhabitants. They also emphasized their agricultural superiority over Arabs, claiming modern methods would benefit local farmers. Post-1948, Zionists used the narrative of "making the desert bloom" to legitimize Israel's establishment, downplaying Palestinian displacement by asserting the land was nearly uninhabited before their arrival. They argued that efficient resource use gave them a stronger claim to the land. Despite these claims, Palestine was not a barren wasteland; significant areas were already cultivated by Palestinians, who had been constrained by poor governance rather than lack of agricultural ability.
Historical and climatological data show that much of northern Palestine had a Mediterranean climate suitable for agriculture, unlike the true desert conditions in the Negev. By the end of 1944, a large non-nomadic rural Arab population existed, indicating extensive cultivation. Zionist agricultural advancements, aided by substantial financial support and land acquisitions from Palestinian refugees, furthered the transformation of previously cultivated lands.
The assertion that Israel transformed a desert ignores the existing agricultural practices of Palestinians and the substantial land and resources they had developed. Thus, the narrative of an uninhabited desert belies the historical reality of Palestine's cultivated landscape before large-scale Jewish immigration.
