Hi Ghib, I notice you like Tiong Bahru quite a lot and have done a few vlog there. It is definitely is a wonderful place to visit. Just to share some history of the Tiong Bahru estate. Back in the 1930s, it was also known as a Mistress slum. The locals called it “Den of Beauties (mĕi rén wō )” 美人窝, colloquially known as “Mistress Village (èr nai chūn )” 二奶村 for housing mistresses of rich men. Due to the high costs of flats, Crazy Rich Asian men commonly kept their second homes stashed away in Tiong Bahru. The estate’s proximity to Great World Amusement Park also drew cabaret dancers and ‘pippa girls’ (aka prostitutes) as inhabitants of the flats with their ‘majies’ or minders. Of course, there are more history to the estate awaiting for us to discover.😌🌼🌺
Just found this video. Can't wait to travel back to Singapore (And Japan!) from Australia when we are allowed. The food is just sooo good. Thanks for the video Ghib!
I thought that the lady would give him the apple pie free for free publicity... Singapore vendors, hope you all will give Ghib free products when he visits your shops ...please show the hospitality that most of us have in sg lah!
Ordinary Observer that’s right. Ghib always give good and flattering reviews. Shop owners should appreciate the marketing exposure that they are getting that traditional advertising cannot achieve. This is the best form of ‘word of mouth’ recommendation.
nelarowana aro What many RUclipsrs do in this case is to tell the audience that they received the item free but is not obliged to endorse it and that what he’s going to comment about it is entirely his own, ie, a disclaimer
The green kuih is called Kuih Salat (sah-laat). It's a kuih with glutenous rice with a coconut & pandan jelly on top. It's a pretty popular malay kuih especially during wedding receptions. The brown/orange kuih is the same kuih but different variation of one another; a brown sugar or tapioca mixture with coconut & flour (Kueh ubi bingka i believe). Glad to see more kuih content as usual! Bengawan solo is great but I think the best kuih comes from small businesses / malay home business ran by makciks. Nothing beats homemade kuehs!
One of my favourite kueh stall is "Mohd Zaid" at ABC Market. Oh my, their kueh kueh and epok are goooood. Its hard to find good malay style epok these days, and this one is GOOD.
@@ylw Pardon me, but I have no idea too. To be honest, due to my limited knowledge I have not heard of Kueh Talam and Kueh Seri Muka before. After Googling online, I notice Kueh Seri Muka seems to resemble Kueh Salat. I believe due to close relationship in the region across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, there should be many similar food with slight changes catering to local tastebuds and preference. Like I heard Mee Siam is quite different across the mentioned countries too.
@@ylw Salat and seri muka are the same. They are just different names by malays & indonesians. Kueh Talam is different where the white portion is a coconut custard rice flour mix vs glutenous rice
@@ylw yes it's the same. I called it Kueh Seri Muka to be more specific. Some call the other 2. Kueh Talam is more generic description of this type of kueh.
Ghib, you should try the ondeh ondeh from Tiong Bahru Market. The name of the shop is HarriAnn’s Delight. In my opinion, it’s better than bengawan solo. There is a crunch (they put a small piece of brown rock sugar, and that’s the magic). when you bite into it. Btw HarriAnn’s has several outlets.
Do you know that bengawansolo at westmall (bukit Batok) serves chendol in their cafe in addition to the kueh and cakes sold. This is the one and only bengawansolo cafe that serves chendol. Their chendol is awesome! Give it a try
Singlish : "Okay, can can". Standard English :"Okay, I'll take it". Ghib san speaks standard English with an American accent. However, when he talks with Singaporeans, he switches to Singlish. Singaporeans should be able to switch code when speaking to foreigners.
if the Kuih salat is your number 1 among them, wow that makes you one of us. It's indeed a classic. Mochi or glutinous rice is as I know a traditional taste of Japan, perhaps that's also why you are able to appreciate and pick this one out among them.
Lost touch with the place. This video has reconnected me with it. Will visit it soon. Good work RUclipsr. Who says Singapore is boring. Videos such as this can help kick-start local tourism.
Oji-San, thank you for showing us this hidden Gem, doesn't know it existed. The brown kueh with coconut shaving is called Kueh Ko Swee.. Anyway, Apple Pie and Egg Tarts are not Nonya kueh, but it's good that they sell these, and they taste better as it is made with a personal touch and not by machine, like the big fanchisee.
5:36 If I am not wrong, that should be kueh salat. The rice is glutinous rice, which is the same rice used for bak chang. The green portion is kaya, which I am sure Ghib-san is super familiar, since you are a fanboy of Yakun. 😁
Bengawan Solo offers more authentic Peranakan kuehs 👍 Galicier Pastry sells a mixture of pastries including some “Nyonya kuehs”. 5:36 The two-layer green kueh with glutinous rice at the bottom and the green custard (a mixture coconut milk, eggs, flour and sugar). It is known by many names Pulut Serikaya (Malaccan Peranakan) or Kueh Salat or Kueh Seri Muka.
that Nonya pastry shop is definitely Over-rated and trust me! overly priced too- i m sorry definitely not sg's most popular Nonya Kueh!!!!!!!!far from it
Thanks for sharing ! I would visit that shop if I were in the vicinity. I personally like the kueh dodoh (black colour kueh with sticky chewy texture). Bengawan Solo has became the commercial version of nonya kueh with outlets all over the Island, while they may not be the "best", but they are a good introduction for visitors and also convenient for travellers to buy some at the airport before they return. I saw that you have travelled to many places and tried lots of different food from all over the world and also all over Singapore, however the only malay food you tried (on video) was Nasi Lemak? Maybe you have eaten some during your travels, just not on video... if that is not the case, it might be worth to look for some nice malay food such as Mee Rebus, mee siam, mee soto, etc.
Can not compare! Two different things Bengawan Solo have become very commercialized Mom n Pop ‘s store keep to traditional way of making Just like you said pandan leaf for green coloring n not artificial coloring Apple pie probably big influence from recent influx of French bakery
Yes, Tiong Bahru has this rustic charm and a food centre call Tiong Bahru Market that sells incredibly delicious food 😁
The green pandan and rice is called kueh salat.
There is Putu Ayu which is a MUST TRY for their Nonya Kueh. 😋
Try bika ambon from Instagram @Thehoneycombcake
I love Tiong Bahru hawker center. Now i should try that kueh shop
Ghib san is getting more and more popular
Good Thing for Japanese Travellers and other travellers as well Ghib is very underrated support this man
Ghib your fav green and white kueh is called kueh salat.
that orange kueh is mde of tapioca

U see gib, you are very popular in singapore now. Haha👏👏👏😀😀😀
OMG that apple pie is perfect

But ...... But Harriann's right there at the hawker centre for nonya kueh!!!! My to-go-to!!!!!
The egg tart had yellow colour as they could use more egg yolk when making the custard mix.
Everyone in Singapore knows Ghib San got famous because of Yishun. 😊
That apple pie looks good....

That apple pie looks insanely good!
Rei Teo and Ghib’s description confirms it👍
Ghib-san even helping Japanese living in Singapore to discover Singapore now that's called doing a great job. Keep it up bro!

I’d love to see him in person someday since I live in SG...
the nyonya kuih shop in tiong bahru is named Galacier, kuih dadar is made with snow white coconut gratings.
my mum used to buy from that pastry haha. yea alot of japanese live in tiong bahru
Love Tiong Bahru! ☺️ Used to live around that area and only truly appreciated the beauty & convenience now that I moved away...

Forget to add. Go easy with kuehs hor. They can be quite high on sugar and eggs... 😅🙈
Ixac Tan yeah that’s the reason i avoid those foods during raya or at hawker centres coz they too sweet for my tastebuds
Glad 🙏that Ghib San is very famous n popular now...💖
Watching this video makes me wanna make a trip down to Galicier haha. They're definitely better than Bengawan Solo.

I love kuih salat too! It's so good. Perfect balance of flavours.
That auntie dam clever ah.... free publicity.... You should ask her to give discount lah! 😂😂😂
The green and white one is my favorite too 😋
1:36 !!
You are very lucky - no queue!
Thanks fr recommending good food in Singapore.
Now Bengawon Solo is not so good!
You should try more Malay kuihs. Ratu lemper sells really great ones. Nonya kuihs are inspired from Malay kuihs.
U. Did show the shop name n address
There is a condo in the area that a lot of Japanese like. There are many Japanese families that live there.
😂😂 I'd totally be like her being like that when I see Ghib hahahahah
Thank you for the recommendation, I'm gonna check it out! Looks yummy! 😋
GHIB STOP FLEXING THAT U GETTING ATTENTION FROM JAPANESE WOMEN. Time to unsub boys!! DEFINITELY NOT SALTY :")
Glacier is awesome!
Nonya Kueh must go along with coffee or tea not sugar cane drinks...???
That shop is famous for their pandan cake.
Thanks, my favorite!
Thanks for introducing me the shop that sell Nonya kueh which is also my favourite
Try kueh at Chalkfarm at Paragon basement.. very very good too
tht is 4 the mid income and above pls!& ie more of cakes....... try subway @ paragon basement instead - truly Nonya
There's also another nonya kueh shop within Tiong Bahru Market called HarriAnn's Delight. :)
Great short video. Next time try HarriAnns Nonya Table. Definitely better than Bengawan.
I agree
Ah, no. I disagree. Lol.
Yummmm I love nonya kueh
That was tapioca cake, not coconut cake!
The most famous Nyonya kueh is not at Joo Chat meh??
Love the nonya kuehs from Glacier, old school taste.
Lol, it won't be a secret if people just share it on RUclips 11:27

Agreed totally. Bengawan Solo version is bland.👎
