Hey mate great vid. Your photo at 10:22 is actually from 1979 when a wheat train crashed into the original Werribee platform, overturning and throwing wheat everywhere. You can see a set of wheels on the left platform and piles of wheat still around the tracks. For many years after there was still the odd stalk of wheat found growing around the station. The station itself was built on land owned by the Chirnsides who owned basically everything that’s now Wyndham. The Chirnsides “donated” the land so they’d have easy access to transportation for their farming interests.
I used to use Aircraft station when I lived in Point Cook, before William's Landing was built. It is awful on a windy, very hot or very wet day. As you said, no shelter. Great video as usual Train Man!
The accident at Laverton was due to the signal displaying clear normal speed instead of medium for diverging speeds. Sadly, this wasn’t the first time that happened and previous times was reported but it still happened

Excellent work as always. I always learn something new and Im an ex VR officer!!. just when you thought there was nothing new, along comes The Train Man to put us back into the classroom. haha
It's fantastic your documenting our rail history. You could have extended Werribee station history. The derailment in the station, I think, on 11 Oct 1987, a train load of wheat carried in GY's derailed in the station changing its visual aspect forever. Another further derailment across from the Racecourse hotel where I think one death occurred. Another same location back in the steam era. You could do a whole video on train crashes along the Werribee line. I have a heap of pics of the 87 station crash. Keep up the good work 👏
Thanks great work really glad that you did your research on the naming of Hopper's crossing these were my great great grand parents I still have crowbar with VR weld on the head don't if it was Great Great father or not .
Best old vs new comparison I know of is Nth Melbourne Station. Half the platform is old & half is new. Old half has full cover shelter from Sun & rain new half has minimal cover. Old half has ramps , ' exits now closed', new half has escalators that don't work after rain because drive belts get wet and slip. No drainage grates for wet feet at start of escalators. No one planned for rain when designs approved. Station staff still soldier on .
Hi Max, another interesting video. In the early 1950s, VR put on special trains to Aircraft and I attended my first air show at Laverton Air Force Base. Sabre and Meteor Jets,Spitfires and a Lancaster Bomber. On the return to Spencer St R735 hauled the special, great days. Cheers.
Years ago, before electrification, the VR would attach a locomotive to a Harris carset and run it to Lara for the Airshow. In the early ‘70s a D3 was used. The day I rode it, a B class pulled the Harris cars.
Well done Train Man, another enjoyable and informative Video. You are right S Kensington is "the worst" station on any line ive travelled on. Seaholme is quite picturesque with the single track and the line of palm trees. Also Seaholme Station is significant for another reason. If you (me) are trying to get to Williamstown and get on the wrong train at Newport station, its a long train trip (8mins!) to the next station (Seaholme) to get off and come back to Newport . Essentially all you have between Newport and Seaholme is open grass lands and refineries to look at. So Its gives you plenty of time consider your mistake. ha!
One improvement I would love to see is the Metro 2 rail tunnel (Clifton Hill to Newport) and the Altona Loop upgrade combined as one project which could revolutionise that line, if tunnelling is possible close to the coast at Altona, then the three stations along the Altona loop could be transferred underground so that the level crossings can be removed and track duplication can be possible, South Kensington station can transfer to the Williamstown line
Another great little history presentation, Max, with more great old pix and inserts about future plans. Looks like there's a lot of variety on this line, but think I like the sleepy looking places best! Thanks for posting mate!
I would be more worried being on the Frankston or Dandenong lines than the western suburbs. The funny thing is that the western suburbs rail lines are statistically safer than south and south east suburbs.

You asked for ideas for stories? About 20 years ago I was catching the train to Sydney from I think it was southern cross station. I might be wrong about that! Someone told me to look at some track there, as there were 2 or even 3 guages together, which made the points and track incredibly complicated. It was incredible to see it. Is it still there? Even if it is not in use. The problems and issues of multiple guages, and I am sure that there would be some, would be an interesting story.
Here is a very popular vid giving a driver's view of the mixed gauge track from the previous Spencer St station to Broadmeadows. From a standard gauge Vline N class train headed to Albury. The tracks got even more complex after the line north of Seymour was made standard gauge only with very little benefit and multi millions of dollars expenditure. The change was so poorly done around 2015 that the track is still being worked on to remove mudholes that caused very poor track conditions. This is most of the dual gauge trackage that also limits speeds but was used in Metro Melbourne due to lack of space. ruclips.net/video/_uhNYvBvKDc/видео.html And in the reverse direction ruclips.net/video/H0h6j3yTP3k/видео.html
A great railway video.a pedantic point it is custom to say R double AF rather than R AAF. Second point that until electrification the stations werribee and stations to Newport were serviced country trains the Geelong line and a rail motor to werribee. The Geelong flyer left werribee at 8 15 and pull in to Spencer st at 8 50. I note recent plans see a return of Geelong trains to improve travel time. The Galvin and aircraft stations were unmanned. Island stations were bad because of the number of fatalities. People would try to beat trains to the station or in that commuter zombie default a not be aware of a a speeding train. It should be noted that until the through to werribee service the Altona service was a mickey mouse service that operated from Newport following Williamstown services. I remember correctly there was also a service into Newport workshops.
Also, if you want a slightly unique experience - you can catch Melbourne's only double deck bus in regular service (not counting tourist or sightseeing buses), care of CDC's 'Optimus' DD bus no. 135 running on route 190 between Werribee and Wyndham Vale. I'm not sure exactly when it runs, but I would think morning and arvo peak hours most likely. bcsv.org.au/wp-content/uploads/CDC_Werribee135.jpg
They spent millions of dollars on Hoppers Crossing station but no toilets and not manned except for in the morning. It actually takes longer to get to the train now than the old crossing.
Aircraft is still owned by the RAAF and is tecnicly classified a just a "PLATFORM" and not a full station. And the comeng underground is 388M. It was destroyed in a head on crash with N457 over 20 years ago. It is still in Metropolitan transit authority (THE MET) livery.
That's some cracking information, thank you for sharing. I did hear that the the 388M was involved in a crash after filming this, however, it is incredible how they got it down there. That information about Aircraft amazes me, is this the only place in Melbourne is classified as a 'platform'?
they might upgrade sth ken station once the new line is finished being built, then again there is not that many people that get on and off the station during the week from what i saw when heading along there
Siemens, only because I don't ride on them often, and they are generally quieter, and walkthrough carriages! I ride on X-traps 99% of the time, love them too. I used to be scared of Comengs (when I was 5), I don't mind them now. Can't wait for HCMTs though!
Aircraft Station should be closed, its too close to Williams Landing Station (1.1km away) and Laverton (960m away). This is heavy rail, not light rail. We shouldn't keep an under used, pointless station in place just to keep a couple Karen's happy, if the station was 50m away from another station, those same Karen's would still complain because they want a station on their door step. In the interest of the state and of the majority, this station should be knocked down, so the regular standard of having stations roughly 3km apart can be applied, that way trains can travel faster between stations and that means trains will also arrive faster, with a better timetable. Just knock the stations down and plaster a sign: Attention Karen's, your nearest station is this way, pointing to bloody Laverton. As they say, the loudest are always the minority and the majority are alway the silent ones, that's why Dan Andrews will enjoy 12 years as Premier.
in my opinion, i wouldn't get rid of it whilst certainly it is a bit under used and useless, imo it eases the congestion of Williams Landing and especially is useful for Point Cook (yes i know Williams Landing is superior but it helps with an additional one) I still think it should definitely be skipped in the express times, but i personally wouldn't take it down

I'm not sure exactly when it runs, but I would think morning and arvo peak hours most likely.

Going to be a nice long video :D
ive been in a car accident at the cherry street crossing
What editor do you use ?

@@the_train_man oh no my computer can't run that
The pedistrian subway at Aircraft will not be happening. They are building a bridge over the rail line for pedestrians
Westona is basically a diamond intersection.
good vid ..however constantly shoving your mug into the camera is a little off putting when most viewers just want rail facts and scenes.
The secrets of Sunshine and St Albans station!
They spent millions of dollars on Hoppers Crossing station but no toilets and not manned except for in the morning. It actually takes longer to get to the train now than the old crossing.
All good points you bring up, maybe they should've worked harder to gain a better community input.
Hope you enjoyed the video :)
williams landing is in open land and in the middle of no where i think
Big area surrounding the station, filling up with estates, 16th busiest station in Melbourne now
talk about the v line lines pls
WELL MELTON STILL HAS ITS OG STATION AN ALSO ITS OWN MINI BOOM GATES
Aircraft is still owned by the RAAF and is tecnicly classified a just a "PLATFORM" and not a full station. And the comeng underground is 388M. It was destroyed in a head on crash with N457 over 20 years ago. It is still in Metropolitan transit authority (THE MET) livery.
That's some cracking information, thank you for sharing. I did hear that the the 388M was involved in a crash after filming this, however, it is incredible how they got it down there. That information about Aircraft amazes me, is this the only place in Melbourne is classified as a 'platform'?
U should do the bright railway line
I go on holidays at Bright, next time I go up there, I might film, great idea!
@@the_train_man i live in myrtelford half way through the line and dont know much about it so would love to see a vid :D
they should up grade south kengsington station
they might upgrade sth ken station once the new line is finished being built, then again there is not that many people that get on and off the station during the week from what i saw when heading along there

My mum told me off about this after filming haha, my apologies, Ishould have know this too, I've been down to the Point Cook base multiple times!
Did you spot the very new vlocity
I've seen it on many occasions, it looks very nice
@@the_train_man I want to travel on it so bad!!!!
whats your favourite train
Siemens, only because I don't ride on them often, and they are generally quieter, and walkthrough carriages! I ride on X-traps 99% of the time, love them too. I used to be scared of Comengs (when I was 5), I don't mind them now. Can't wait for HCMTs though!
The Red Rattlers and the Harris trains were the best trains in Melbourne👍 The Hitachi trains were bad some like an tin can for fish
@@peterausfranken Agreed Peter, So much character in the 'golden days' of train, seems lost in today's trains

Within the next 3 videos, coming, don't you worry!
Id like to do a "secrets of Puffing Billy" but I'd need a few lawyers after it.

North Melbourne and Footscray: am I a joke to you
Ah, they will be getting separate videos, don't worry!
As they say, the loudest are always the minority and the majority are alway the silent ones, that's why Dan Andrews will enjoy 12 years as Premier.
in my opinion, i wouldn't get rid of it
whilst certainly it is a bit under used and useless, imo it eases the congestion of Williams Landing and especially is useful for Point Cook (yes i know Williams Landing is superior but it helps with an additional one)
I still think it should definitely be skipped in the express times, but i personally wouldn't take it down
