There’s a weird process to cataloging and most of the time the librarians who interact with the public don’t determine where items are shelved. There have been times that my co-workers and I have actually sent items back requesting they be placed elsewhere. Ha ha!
I walked into Barnes and Noble today, and the first thing I saw was a display with all of her books and a sign that read, "Just because they do bad things sometimes doesn't mean they're a bad person." I about died.
I came back to this video because I remember this so vividly from years ago when the booktube community was pointing out the problematic writing of Colleen Hoover. Now, her books are undeniably trendy and popular like what….
Well her books are targeted to teens and most teenage girls are on tiktok so I guess that's why. I'm a teenage girl and I also got introduced to her from friends I quite like some of them tbh
I love the fact you explicitly said don't recommend me anymore Colleen Hoover books and don't go buy them and half these comments are saying how they love the books and just bought some and are recommending you more😂👌
I read Slammed by Collen Hoover last year, and I utterly HATED it. I don't know, I just couldn't stand it. It was so juvenile, hypocritical & manipulative. Maybe I should give her books another shot too? NOT.
Prer Tae for some reason i kind of liked slammed, but the 2nd book was trash and she tried to drag the success out. overall she’s pretty fucking juvenile as a writer.
The first book that I ever read by Colleen Hoover was It Ends With Us. And it was actually one of my favorite book that stuck with me. It made me feel a lot of things. I thought it was pretty amazing. Now, Ugly Love seems completely different (in a bad way) xD not interest on reading that one.
I guess it was because It Ends With Us was something that Hoover herself had gone through. Her parents had abusive relationship and she hasn't, in any way, romanticized domestic violence and that's why it was so good.
it really feels like you're being gaslit by the whole world when you don't like colleen hoover's books and everyone else does. "all your perfects' literally traumatised me; apart from the cringey lines, the portrayal of love and infertility and mental illness in that book? horrifying. the couple's relationship is strained because of their fertility issues, she spirals into depression and gets no help for it, the mmc cheats on her (and claims he did it because he missed her and loved her so much), and everything is solved in the last few pages. i am still reeling from the horrid experience that was that book.
Everyone on booktube and booktok recommends her books like they’re must reads and I REFUSE to read them because I watched this video 2 years ago LOL I’ve never read a single thing written by Colleen Hoover and I am proud of it thank you Caleb
I feel like Colleen Hoover books are just over, like they are SUPER problematic and our society now just shouldn't stand for it. Don't we have enough sexism and abuse in EVERYDAY LIFE?!?!?! I'm glad you made this video to shut down the haters and verify your feelings, which I think is actually a very well-thought idea. Also shout-out to you for not giving her money and supporting your local library! :)
Yes!!! I haven't read this (and not planning on it) but how many woman have been through relationships like this and have come through the other end with scars, and then this chick is writing relationships like that and acting like its love and making them for young adults and teens to learn about love, and seeing this shit. No. Pls authors, write healthy relationships when writing for young adults and teens.
To be fair, I think authors should be able to write about abusive relationships so long as it's clear that the relationship is unhealthy. So long as it isn't romanticized I think it's fine to write about it.
Maybe this comment will get lost among all your other comments, but if you ever read this I’d like to tell you that as the mom of a teenager who likes to read I cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate your candid review and making me aware that this garbage glorifying abuse is out there and being recommended. Thanks for letting your viewers know that this is NOT cute. I will talk to my kid about it. Also, you’re hilarious, keep up the great work
I agree, and that’s how Rhys kind of was in the recent novella. He didn’t make rules for her like this, but he did oversexualize and control her. Like them bitches couldn’t even look at one another without fucking. What kind of relationship??
I've only read the first book but if this comment pertaining to that 1 then he definitely had a reason to control her like that. He was trying to save a whole country
Um actually Girl... I wouldn’t comment until you’ve read the second book at least. I’m not going to try and sway your opinion, but def read the second book before deciding if Tamlins rule making is... good, I guess.
This book sounds awful. I don't have a problem if people like a book. that's there right. But ignoring the very obvious red flag behavior is an issue. Thanks for pointing out all the problems with the book.
What I think it is funny is that in 'this is how it ends', she writes about an abusive relationship even though her other relationships are just as bad 😬
@@onsrejeb6083 I have read a bunch of her books for the hype and to get an idea of her stories and writing style and stuff. And I have the same concerns. I feel like she didn't get the mental help and therapy when it was really necessary and now I'm just worried about her

Here three years later after reading two Colleen Hoover books because of tiktok. I only read the second one because I thought they all couldn’t be that awful with such good reviews, right? I’m in full agreement, all her romances are toxic abusive relationships, based purely on lust being disguised as love, zero character development and a “twist” ending that is lame and predictable.
I wished you read "It Ends With Us" its the only book I ever read from her and it's really good and handles the abusive relationship the way it should be handled. I have never seen anyone mark a library book LOL. I love how much you look out for women characters!!!!!!!
I didn't like that one as much. I read Maybe Someday when I was like 11, and thought about it just recently and read all of her books almost, and I've only read like 3 I absolutely hated.
It Ends With Us is also the only Colleen Hoover book that i've ever read, and until I saw this review I also thought that it was a good example of gender equality, exploring relationships. However, listening to this review I realise now that 'oh no, that book is also really messed up'.
I recently read “It ends with us” and it was like also my first time reading a Colleen Hoover book and I was just so disappointed because it definitely is better than what “Ugly Love” sounds like but like it was also very messed up and her writing style and the characters made me hate myself. They acted like 10 year olds and the dialogue sounded like a bad wattpad story. Other than that it had a good message and somewhat good plot which was like the only good part about the book so yea read on your own risk🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
@@reginawohletz6250 My first Colleen Hoover book was "Maybe Someday" and I loved it so much that I couldn't wait to read her other books .. And then I read Ugly Love and couldn't force myself to read more than 120 pages 🤮... I felt characters in "Maybe Someday" were using their brains, but Characters in Ugly love doesn't even seem to have a common sense 🤦
I feel like the main guy being a walking red flag is a common theme in her books. It was the same with Ryle in It Ends With Us. Back then I wrote it off as CoHo making him creepy on purpose (as he ends up as an abuser), but then in her note at the end she was discussing how she had a hard time because even she kind of fell for him in the beginning? Um he was literally creepy as hell from the get go and idk what about him was EVER lovable??? That's when I decided I'll never read a book from her again lmao
Just came over to rewatch this book review after seeing Caleb's newest video about Colleen Hoover and...I don't think he gave his teenaged self enough credit in the newest video. In this video he straight-up says that he would have had a higher opinion of this book if there was an epilogue that acknowledged that this was an abusive relationship. Which is exactly the case with the only Colleen Hoover book that he's had any positive thoughts about.
LOL Colleen Hoover books sound like my life “She’s gonna have some insecurities and some drunk guy is gonna be like “You’re pretty!’ and she’s gonna be like ‘You’re right take advantage of me!!!’” DATS MY LYFE 😂😂😂
your voice would be greatttt as an audio book, honestly that would be one audio book I'd pay to listen to *not an Audiobook for this book but just a book in general* seriously, consider it id pay money for that
I can't tell if she's write fucked up stories on purpose or if she is promoting these as good relationships?? like you said, the title is self aware, but also her parents did NOT have a healthy relationship, and she's aware of that, but it still has probably had a major effect on her. It Ends With Us makes me think that she's learning more and more.
Michaela Wagner --- "It Ends With Us" definitely shows the right choice to make in a bad relationship. And it can really be relatable to people in abusive relationships and families
I also think that a lot of older millenials (like 80s born) don't exactly notice toxicity in relationships, and that sucks because they're the people who are writing stories for TV, film, & books aimed at teens. :/ PLL is ripe with it.
Michaela Wagner THIS. I'm in my later 20s and growing up it was always "do this or that to get a guy to like you" or "if hes mean or rude he's just teasing" rather than how men should respect women. Also i think a lot of 80s born producers or writers go straight for what creates the most drama (because it's more interesting) than how things will be preceived by a younger audience.
YES!!! I'm 24 and I get that too. I'm constantly trying to help my friends do better in their love lives omfg there's so many trash men that want them. and I agree!! or even when it's still a healthy relationship they still have them fight over dumb things to create drama. It's they don't know how to make anything interesting without relationship problems.
this is the best video i have ever watched. the fact that everyone loves this book is insanity. thank you for slandering this book & coho ur my fav person ever
last comment, 50 shades was a POOR example of bdsm. it was just abuse guised as bdsm. subs make most of the choices for the doms, and its about trust and consent. In fact imo a video game portrayed it best -_-;;
Azazura-daro as a kink newbie, thanks! This is really important information! Also, what video game are you talking about, if I may ask 👀👀👀👀👀 For research-
On a more serious note. All what you say, the way you wrapped up this video is so right. I loved november 9 when I read it, I thought of it as romance and love and fun and would have give it a four star. But now that I think about it, and watch this video and other ones and reading reviews of how shady and wrong and sexist this type of plot line is, and seeing it marketed off as romance, I realize just how manipulated and threaded into this type of books I was. And I called myself a feminist. This brought light to some aspects I should've been more aware of. I realize this now, so thank you
This is the first video of yours I've seen and I'm in love. This was HILARIOUS. The entire time I was thinking "Wait, is this E. L. James and 50 Shades of Gray under different names?" I'm so glad you finally compared them. But 50 Shades totally DOES romanticize the relationship and make it into a love story when it's really outrageously abusive, but HE'S HOT SO IT'S OKAY!
As an abuse survivour myself who's been in relationships like this (AND BTW I THOUGHT SOME SHIT WAS SEXY AND OKAY CAUSE I READ BOOKS LIKE THIS LMAO) I'm grateful you made this video I don't hear this enough on booktube (like with stolen - she was literally kidnapped and she fell in love with him and people were like :000 IS IT TRUE LOVE?? :0000)
A friend of mine recommended this book to me saying it was so good. I had seen raving reviews about it. When I started reading it I immediately saw everything you saw in this abusive relationship. I gave it like 150 pages and then I just looked for more review because I couldn't believe that everybody liked this piece of crap, and then I found your video. Thank you.
I know I'm late to this party but books that glorify or romanticize abusive behavior in relationships is absolutely deplorable. Abuse in teenage relationships is more common than adults like to think and we need to have books that help people realize poor behavior and get out of abusive relationships.
i know it’s been 3 years since this video, but i read “Ugly love” a few days ago and i am so interested in reading or watching reviews about this book. THIS VIDEO IS HILARIOUS, you are hilarious and so relatable.
Tysm for the honesty!! Everyone loves this book, like wtf, I get everyone has their own opinions but it honestly made me feel kinda crazy that I was the only person I know who doesn’t like this book. It isn’t romance its abuse and that ain’t cute. I’m not gunna be a hypocrite I probably would’ve enjoyed this book when I was 14, however I feel this is the kind of book you would like if your new to reading. Now I’m so much more mature and can see the red flags. To be fair if it was labelled as a toxic relationship then it wouldn’t be so bad but it’s promoted as a love story. My one big concern is that its targeted to young impressionable people who may then in return think it’s okay to be used instead of someone getting therapy.💀

There’s a weird process to cataloging and most of the time the librarians who interact with the public don’t determine where items are shelved. There have been times that my co-workers and I have actually sent items back requesting they be placed elsewhere. Ha ha!
Your sense of humor thooo
"He killed someone but he won't goto jail cuz he's good looking"
Lololol
I walked into Barnes and Noble today, and the first thing I saw was a display with all of her books and a sign that read, "Just because they do bad things sometimes doesn't mean they're a bad person."
I about died.
and now, in the year of our lord 2022, booktok has popularised colleen hoover again... pls help
It’s all because of the damn TikTok
Idk why teenage girls love toxic men🤦🏻♀️ This is why I don't read romance books anymore.
@@lunaeverIy Then they grow up adult women into toxic relationships. ie, my sister.
I love the fact you explicitly said don't recommend me anymore Colleen Hoover books and don't go buy them and half these comments are saying how they love the books and just bought some and are recommending you more😂👌
Olivia Rose In Bloom ugh ik, people are fucking dumb.
Layla Hasanzadah I've heard smilar thoughts about it too.
The only book by her that is actually good and has a good message and made me cry was It Ends With Us. That's good, in my honest opinion.
It's sad that this is written by a WOMAN.
I'm not here right!!!! I feel like half of the time it’s women putting us down!!
She's a pick-me femcel so ofc
it really feels like you're being gaslit by the whole world when you don't like colleen hoover's books and everyone else does.
Caleb would really hate After by Anna Todd
Jayrisss .Vasquez that book😂 it's so thick😂
u saw the future
Everyone on booktube and booktok recommends her books like they’re must reads and I REFUSE to read them because I watched this video 2 years ago LOL I’ve never read a single thing written by Colleen Hoover and I am proud of it thank you Caleb
His channel is literally a digital book club, and I'm HERE for it!
also the ace erasure makes me want to scream
Natasha Moore Not all of her books are for younger audiences(i.e. Too Late) and not all of her books have terrible relationships(i.e. Without Merit)
To be fair, I think authors should be able to write about abusive relationships so long as it's clear that the relationship is unhealthy. So long as it isn't romanticized I think it's fine to write about it.
@@pikapower_kirby that's the point. She romanticizes cheating/drama /abuse etc
i saw the thumbnail for this and am commenting before the video even starts just so i can comment nO
I wanted to watch this because of the thumbnail. It was perfect!
i keep coming back 2 this video whenever the booktok colleen hype gets on my nerves a bit too much
Same!! They’re starting to dislike it though so we are getting there lmao
agh yess!! the whole coho booktok cult is the bane of my existence
I'm almost at the point where i wanna create a hate club for her books 😍😍😍
now that colleen hoover is popular again , i feel so good coming here and satisfying my hater self
teenage you was so fun
Maybe this comment will get lost among all your other comments, but if you ever read this I’d like to tell you that as the mom of a teenager who likes to read I cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate your candid review and making me aware that this garbage glorifying abuse is out there and being recommended. Thanks for letting your viewers know that this is NOT cute. I will talk to my kid about it. Also, you’re hilarious, keep up the great work
I’ve never read a book from colleen hoover and I’m so glad I haven’t!! Honestly all the things you say are true! Thankyou I won’t ever read her books
Also all those “disappointed but not surprised” keep killing me😂😂😂
Just bless you for posting these videos! You always make my day
I’ve seen her books around multiple book communities, and honestly, from what you’ve quoted, I’m disgusted 🤷🏼♀️
After your review I cannot believe how many booktubers says it’s their favourite book and giving it 5 stars…
Boy: I make all the rules
Girl: oh okay yeah I guess I’m okay with that.
Low key Tamlin and Feyre.
Christine Roland agreed but thankfully Sarah shows how that is abusive later unlike in this book
Christine Roland except that Feyre was never ok with that
I agree, and that’s how Rhys kind of was in the recent novella.
I tried the Ox line with my fiance, and now my next therapy appointment has been moved up to Friday.
😭😭💀💀
You were ahead of your time
This book sounds awful. I don't have a problem if people like a book. that's there right. But ignoring the very obvious red flag behavior is an issue. Thanks for pointing out all the problems with the book.
Steph C agreed
What I think it is funny is that in 'this is how it ends', she writes about an abusive relationship even though her other relationships are just as bad 😬
It Ends With Us, not This is How it Ends, but yeah I agree with you
Ik this comment is 4 years old lmao
At this point i think she needs therapy
@@onsrejeb6083 I have read a bunch of her books for the hype and to get an idea of her stories and writing style and stuff. And I have the same concerns. I feel like she didn't get the mental help and therapy when it was really necessary and now I'm just worried about her
Dear Caleb,
Please don't change. I absolutely adore you rofl! I feel sad that you have to use disclaimers because people refuse to just...click...x...
Anywho, I am always entertained when you say how you feel about things. You're just the bee's knees.
Sincerely,
The Abominable Book Girl
Here three years later after reading two Colleen Hoover books because of tiktok. I only read the second one because I thought they all couldn’t be that awful with such good reviews, right? I’m in full agreement, all her romances are toxic abusive relationships, based purely on lust being disguised as love, zero character development and a “twist” ending that is lame and predictable.
the amount of times the disappointed but not surprised slide comes up
kills. me.
"we both laughed at our son's big balls" WTF I'm dying x'D
The way I JUMPED when he said “You’re going to fall in love with me, Rachel.” I was really looking around like, “who said that?”
It's there everywhere in the flashbacks and its creepy how he's obsessed with her when he doesn't even know her
I feel like you gave it an honest chance. And now I don't have to try to read her books. Thank you.
*I AM HOWLING*
LOL Colleen Hoover books sound like my life “She’s gonna have some insecurities and some drunk guy is gonna be like “You’re pretty!’ and she’s gonna be like ‘You’re right take advantage of me!!!’” DATS MY LYFE 😂😂😂
Well... that doesn't sound good.
😂
Tracy Osimowicz nah gurl you can do better!
You deserve better :')
You deserve the BEST!!!! 💙
your voice would be greatttt as an audio book, honestly that would be one audio book I'd pay to listen to *not an Audiobook for this book but just a book in general* seriously, consider it id pay money for that
"caleb judging peoples driving for 10 minutes straight"
I can't tell if she's write fucked up stories on purpose or if she is promoting these as good relationships?? like you said, the title is self aware, but also her parents did NOT have a healthy relationship, and she's aware of that, but it still has probably had a major effect on her. It Ends With Us makes me think that she's learning more and more.
Michaela Wagner --- "It Ends With Us" definitely shows the right choice to make in a bad relationship. And it can really be relatable to people in abusive relationships and families
Agreed!!
"Say the word ox, cause that's my new favorite word from you~!"
Uhhhhhhh...are you high, Main Character?
I hated this book so much I started doing push ups and hysterically laughing
last comment, 50 shades was a POOR example of bdsm. it was just abuse guised as bdsm. subs make most of the choices for the doms, and its about trust and consent.
In fact imo a video game portrayed it best -_-;;
Azazura-daro as a kink newbie, thanks! This is really important information! Also, what video game are you talking about, if I may ask 👀👀👀👀👀 For research-
“Can I get fiery chicken nuggets?” 😂I’m screaming
On a more serious note. All what you say, the way you wrapped up this video is so right. I loved november 9 when I read it, I thought of it as romance and love and fun and would have give it a four star. But now that I think about it, and watch this video and other ones and reading reviews of how shady and wrong and sexist this type of plot line is, and seeing it marketed off as romance, I realize just how manipulated and threaded into this type of books I was. And I called myself a feminist. This brought light to some aspects I should've been more aware of. I realize this now, so thank you
At least you're aware of that now. There are ADULTS who would romanticize and want these kinds of relationship.
this book being popular on tiktok makes me think abt this video so much
It's so refreshing to see someone with a following this big who doesn't like her books either!
I have seen this video an unhealthy amount of time, but it never gets old
You are literally my favorite book tuber!! You’re so hilarious
Can you do Vlogs they are so fun to watch
I've never read any of her books, and now I'm traumatized by the quotes from this one 😂 how does this have a 4.3 on Goodreads?!
omg He HaS tHe V!!!
As an abuse survivour myself who's been in relationships like this (AND BTW I THOUGHT SOME SHIT WAS SEXY AND OKAY CAUSE I READ BOOKS LIKE THIS LMAO) I'm grateful you made this video
I don't hear this enough on booktube (like with stolen - she was literally kidnapped and she fell in love with him and people were like :000 IS IT TRUE LOVE?? :0000)
This was one of the best videos I've ever watched
"page 1, things seem to be going good so far so i'm feeling pretty confident--"
_30 seconds later_
THIS IS ALREADY STARTING OUT IN A REALLY BAD WAY
A friend of mine recommended this book to me saying it was so good.
I was heated just listening to all the problems with the book :/
On this episode of Are The Straights Okay?™️ There’s this freaking book. Holy hell.
