Even if I were using Lightroom, the limitations of iPadOS, specifically the file system, means it makes no sense to me. Apart from not needing a mobile workflow right now, a MacBook makes much more sense, esp the new lightweight M1s with allday battery.
Forgive my amateur question. So does the improved screen then translate to better colors when you print? In other words, if you can better manipulate the picture on the iPP, does it pay off in the print (assuming you have access to a first rate printer)? BTW, I went through my photos on the iPP 2021, and really did see improved imaging over my 2018 iPP 12.9" For me, it was worth the upgrade from the 2018 to the 2021 iPP. But, I do hope Apple's next iOS takes better advantage of the M1 chip, and 16GB of RAM.
No. It’s not. I’m a travel photographer. I spend 3-4 months on the road. Use a 11” iPad Pro. And two SSD externals. I shoot w Fuji medium format. No issues. The larger iPad tho nice, is just too large and I don’t need it
Jokes aside it’s makes so much difference. Like if I post a video and it tanks (like this one did) I will try to change the title and thumbnail a few times. For example the editing video I posted a couple weeks ago tanked to 10/10. I changed the thumbnail and title a couple times till I saw some movement and now it is one of the most viewed this month. Just gotta play round till I learn what works and what doesn’t
by the way, I just got the 11" M1, and like it, but can't see any performance increase over my 12.9" from 2017 (gen 2). they are all incredibly powerful. but I do like the Pencil v2
Roman, excellent video. One question: you mentioned a good point to turn off True Tone when photo editing.. what screen brightness does you set for photo editing then? Or how do you set the proper screen brightness for Lightroom photo editing? Thanks.
That’s a good point and honestly I just set it to Auto. I would always reference the histogram when editing and if am really unsure on an edit, i would look at it on a dark and a white background to see how it looks
Interesting review of iPad photo editing. I tried it in the past but I did find that it has been slower for me and often I had a color cast on my edited photos. So I had to rework them on my calibrated PC screen.
The 11 is the best choice. It’s much more mobile than the bigger version. It’s a personal preference. And this is a primary. You can’t edit with the big one on the couch. It’s much more of a hassle. It comes close to an Mac Air… The mini is actually the best one. But if you can have a bit more cash, go for the 11.
I’m so used to use computers and the macOS is still lacking some key features to be my only device but I’m strongly considering to buy the 11’ to add to my workflow. Ad you said never buy a hardware based on future software updates, adjust your usage or use the best tool for the job. Cool to have your feedback. Thks for sharing :)
Thanks for all the detail and thoughts, especially comparing to macbook pro m1 - am considering both at the moment and want both, but one at a time for budget is it.
the most important thing for the apple ecosystem is that you have to pay generally. Im more of a hobbyist with low budget so you can imagine what im doing from a desktop. This ipad is for professionals or those who was the money to spend for no reason. Anyway ,Roman, very informative prospective! Thanks for sharing, greeetings from Greece!
Thanks for sharing your impressions. I just upgrade from the 11” 2018 iPadPro to a fully loaded 11” 2021: not sure it was the smartest move. Regarding using LR, i think it is worth mentioning that a prerequisite is a reliable, affordable and high speed internet connection, something not necessarily present everywhere. thanks, Stefano
Very good point Stefano. I think you will really notice the main difference when you will have to edit a lot of photos or export a lot. Yeah the internet can be an issue for sync but you don’t technically have to use it. Before i had enough storage, I just always had the feature switched off and used local ipad storage with a backup on an external drive. I might do a video on this soon actually
@@snapsbyfox that would be great. Clarifying how much Lightroom depends on connectivity something I’d like to understand better. Same as for storage and storage criteria. IMHO Adobe is not doing a good job positioning the two versions, while clearly their financial incentive seems to point in favor of LR rather than LRC
Awsome video, I really mean it. Very well presented, you delivered exactly what promised in the beginning of the video, your presentation skills were very nice and you made it technically just right (sound, lighting, proper skin colors etc). You can always tell if someone is coming from a photography or videography background. Nothing is attention grabbing, but everything fits together, just how it should be. Unfortunately, for me it's hard to decide if it's worth buying it for my needs. I love photography but only as a hobby. I already own a big home computer with a dedicated 32inch calibrated monitor and a macbook pro 16 on the go. But the setup is used for my engineering work mostly, photography is just my hobby. I mostly use AdobeCamera Raw with Photoshop or On1 RAW. So regarding to your last comparison section of the video, what are your thoughts as the ipad pro as an additional device to use in conjunction with a mac book pro on the go? Is the pencil etc worth an additional expense? Maybe you could share a few thoughts here.
Great vid, really makes me want to use my 11” for editing more. Would love to know more about your workflow for importing and backing up, and what hardware you use to do so?
Hi I've decided to part-x my micro 4/3rds equipment and move to Fujifilm x-t4 which is what I wanted to go with in the first place but was persuaded me to go for Olympus. So after watch your videos amongst others channels thought I'll take the plunge before I get to much stuff on 4/3rds Thanks for info Just one thing pc or Mac and what spec should I go for Thanks Again
That mobility is addicting. I love to upload pics from camera to iPad during the holiday and see it. What I don't like is that photos are not in full res in "files" app... So it kinda forces me to work with "photos" app
@@snapsbyfox When I zoom picture in files app, it is blurry. When I take this pic from files and copy it to photos app and zoom, the picture is displayed well.
11:30 going from the 512GB to 1TB is not just "a little bit more" unless you consider a $300 price jump to be "just a little bit more". Granted tho the jump from 256 to 512 is a $200 jump. To conclude and summarize. IPad OS as it sits now is not made to make use of or really take advantage of more RAM in any meaningful way. The only reason to even go for 512GB of storage or more for the average user is if you think you will be installing a LOT of apps and also want to store a LOT of downloaded videos and music directly on to your device at the same time. Otherwise save your money and stick with a 256GB version which i think is the best overall value.
My question stems from an photo editor's point of view: May one *benefit* from Apple's Mini-LED display for the M1 iPad Pro 12.9' during post-processing (in Photoshop Lightroom)? Or will one only get to witness the "glory" brightness of 1000 nits and beyond *only* when *viewing* HDR content? I've been told that Apple's new XDR projects at around 500/ 600 nits during normal usage. Do you notice any micro-contrast detail improvements when editing on the 12.9' mini-LED vs the normal 11'? Please advise, and thank you in advance.
Brilliant discussion. Loved it. Some beautiful images in there too. I just returned the 12.9 M1 as I shoot a lot of landscape images and am a very heavy photoshop user, and the iPad version just doesn't get anywhere close to the MacOS version. I think though I will but either a 2021 or 2020 11 inch for some general 'consumption' and maybe dabble with some digital 'arty' landscape work.
I honestly think that this my favorite review so far. I just wanted to point out that it was good enough for him to sell his 11inch and his 16 spec'd out macbook pro. I've honestly been considering the 12.9 But I already have an 2020 11inch and 2018 11inch(that's a whole other story) . But im thinking of just trading in my 11 for the 12. Because I do a lot of illustrations but the thing I struggle most with is battery life. So only that can possibly fix that is having 2 Ipads lmao. But im thinking it would also be fun to experience the bigger one as well. But for anyone just wanting Ipad pro , but want cheap. Just get the 2018 it's the same lol Your not missing out.
Very good point, and i just leave it on auto tbh. I do reference the histogram a lot though to make sure. Also i would look at an image on a white and a dark background if i am not sure
I am very happy with my ipd and this editing system, but I recognize that rank masks are very important for me and they are not ... hopefully they will come out in an update😕
The M chip is very nice performance wise & the new screen. But, I would wait for the M chip to pass a few generations in the iPad state, if you already have the 12.9” 2020. It would be cool to see a much larger iPad, say like a slate to do more professional work on, but the 12.9” is good size for more “Instagram” photo editing. Cool channel by the way, recent subscriber ✌🏻
Haven’t even used that feature yet lol been too busy editing photos. I had a very quick look just now and it is great in good light and grainy in poor light as expected

I hate YT... I thought for months you stopped posting videos .... thank you for nothing algorithm I'm currently waiting for my iPad pro 12.9 128gb and this review was really good. My old tablet is from I believe 2014/15, it's still working but I cracked the screen sadly and the right side is not really useable anymore, I'm really excited for my new iPad coz I will use it for watching series, drawing, editing pictures and for my school to write down notes etc.... Before I decided to buy it I had the 2020 version rented for 1 month from grover and I was so freaking impressed, especially watching for the first time 4k 60fps hdr videos and then Apple announced the new 2021 version with the m1 processor and I ordered it asap, I kinda wanted to max it out but it was way to expensive for me and if I need more storage I can use a external ssd and connect it over Thunderbolt. Since I never had to do anything with photoshop etc what program is the best one to edit my pictures? I heard photoshop is not good at all and lacks basically everything.
Ah man that sucks! I get the same too. Tbh, they will make external drives more supported so you should be ok as long as you don’t download a ton of apps. I use Lightroom for most RAW editing and then affinity photo. Affinity Photo on ipad is literally a copy of their desktop version and has pretty much every feature possible. Highly recommended
First experience with Capture One resulted in images with purple lines through the RAW’s. Ended up sending my camera back to Fuji, Fuji replaced it because they believed it might have been sensor related; it wasn’t the camera. Lexar replaced both my SD cards, wasn’t that either. Turns out it was a nasty bug in Capture One. Notified Capture One, they confirmed it’s a bug after SO many attempts at convincing them. Now I get regular spam from them offering sales discounts almost on a repeating cycle, I even get them on launch of the software. TBH not impressed at all, didn’t find it that good at all, takes forever to launch and I’m on a 2020 16” MacBook Pro. Not for me, Affinity Photo though, is fabulous.
man that’s a crap experience. I did have it corrupt a library once but overall it behaved for me. Either way I am not using it now as on iPad but i hope it comes over as a ton of my libraries are still there haha
Affinity Photo is a great photo app, I am moving away from Photoshop with AP as my main image editor. But it isn’t a DAM, so not my main RAW editor, which is Capture One, which I love. I currently use a 2013 iMac as my main editing machine, and it works smoothly, and thankfully haven’t had any purple streaking in my Fuji files (obviously not in your Raws, but the processing, as C1 doesn’t touch the Raws). I tried to learn to love Lightroom once, switching exclusively to it for half a year, it felt painful.
@@snapsbyfox Yes it was a journey for sure, glad I got to the root cause. I emailed all involved afterwards of course with the findings and that. Very rewarding and you don’t beat around the bush which is so very refreshing. I’m from Manchester but don’t hold that against me!
@@msandersen Oh!? Hang on I thought Affinity Photo did RAW, I’m fairly certain I manage RAW on my 12.9 2020 iPad. I’ll go and have another look, maybe I’m misunderstanding your comment, not had enough coffee yet :)
@@spaceshipdev yes Affinity Photo has a Raw develop module, I don’t personally use it, as I develop photos in bulk and like the adjustments in C1 and the results it gets a lot more. DAM means Digital Asset Management, it manages large volumes of images, it has a database of all the managed photos, and allows copying adjustments across groups of photos, making versions and viewing side-by-side, etc, whereas Affinity Photo is an image editor you open up individual files in. Once a Raw is opened in AP, you bake in your settings as a pixel image, which is good for cleaning up an image as the final stage in processing.
What’s better (future wise) a full spec out 16in MacBook Pro or full on spec out 14in MacBook Pro? Reason is hard is because my guess, is that the only big difference will be the screen correct? And the 14in will be more portable while the 16ins screen will probably be perfect. But, also, I’m planing on having a separate screen/mouse/keyboard (set up) for either one. So what do you guys think?
having owned a 16, it is a PAIN to take it with you anywhere. i would always suggest a smaller device and an external monitor for working from home. Especially now as small devices are becoming just as powerful
Has anyone done the download speed test using a SD UHS-II card reader with a UHS-II rated card with the M1 iPad and a non M1 iPad? Or a USB-C SSD download/upload with a M1 iPad and a non M1 iPad? Just to check to see if the interface USB-C/Thunderboldt as speed bottleneck or the internal storage in the device. As a photographer download speeds from the SD cards and transfer a speed to a portable SSD like the Samsung T5 are important to me currently
Will the 2021 Pro be your only device or do you have a desktop? As a film photographer I still need a computer for scanning, file management,.....but my 2020 Air 4 has definitely become my primary editing and travel device. If I were strictly digital I could probably get by with just an iPad. I have no need for a laptop any longer.
it is my only device now. Sold my 11” already and the 16 MBP is gone too. Yeah scanning is a tricky one. Although does your scanner have a dedicated app? Maybe that cans support this? If not, you can always have a cheap desktop / laptop for scanning and cloud upload and then manage everywhere on ipad from there
@@snapsbyfox Pretty much what I do. No app, I have a 90s era Nikon Coolscan. Using Vuescan on a 2011 Macbook Pro running High Sierra. Macbook is set up as a desktop sharing a monitor, keyboard, and mouse with the iPad. IPad connectivity goes thru a hub, so one cable to unplug and go.
no idea but doubt it. I have never calibrated any monitor in my life and never really needed to tbh especially on apple devices which are fairly good out of the box
I doubt it with the sand boxing, unless Apple gives companies like Datacolor special system access. I do remember when I got my i1 Display calibrator a while back, they had a viewer app that could be calibrated, but it only worked with that app, because of the sandboxing. I don’t use it.
I use an iPad mini. iPad ios is a disappointment because you have to adopt a closed system with massive cloud capacity needs if you play by Adobe rules. I shoot fuji to two cards: Raw to one, jpg to the other. I use an sd card reader to the iPad since the fuji wifi app gets flakey. I import jpg with baked film sims, using app Maxcurve to adjust toe, heel and contrast. I add borders then I share them. For raw work I use a laptop then copy the LR catalog file over…. All of my edits transfer… there’s no different lightroom Mobil version, no folders limitation, no tiny screen. I think the whole iPad lure comes at a great cost of flexibility, security, and workflow. You have to do everything the iOS way, not your way. Incongruent ios file management compared to Mac OS is a deal killer for me. Example: I copied 400 photos from an ssd card into the ios folders. There was no way to copy them to camera foll to edit. Fail! Guys, stay away from iPad ios if you already have a Mac OS workflow with backup
I've found affinity photo doesn't seem to get the dynamic range out of my RAFs like PS or Capture One idk if this is just me. Curious on how you integrate the app into your workflow!
yeah i also agree. I only use Affinity to add finishing touches like cloning / spot healing on the finished image. 99% of the edit is always done either in LR or C1. Affinity photo’s raw developer is useless
I'd be interested to know how you get on when the MBP is gone. I've mulled over this so much recently, and i just don't think i would be able to manage with just an iPad. I'm soooo tempted though! (on a side note - anyone else have to suffer 6 commercial breaks in this video - i very nearly hit the back button)
Well my MBP will be getting sold in the next week or two so I guess I will find out haha. I did ipad only before but it was on the 11 so didn’t enjoy it as much as that is too cramped tbh as a daily. Wait you had 6 adverts?! Agh so annoying, I usually set RUclips to do it automatically, just checked and it spammed the whole video. I removed a few of them. Thanks for highlighting this
Apple is going to kill every PC, tablet & phone manufacturer in upcoming years. but for me only if they add a proper file management system on ipads and iphones. Writing this from my macbook pro m1 & its greatest LAPTOP i've ever used.

I love the train B roll at 07:35 It's so sad that the iPad is the best tablet on the market. It is such a well-made and polished device but the company behind it is the complete opposite... Apple is arrogant, anti consumer and actively fights back against the Right to Repair. I just wish that Apple wouldn't be so incredibly toxic and would change to a better behaving company like Fairphone or Framework. They could do so much good with their resources instead of being straight up greedy AF. At least they recently attacked Facebook's main income source by giving users the option to opt out of Ad tracking, so they aren't a complete disaster... *Rant over.*

You should be able to create a shortcut to turn off truetone and start Lightroom with one button. Thanks for the review.
Thank you, will try!
No. It’s not. I’m a travel photographer. I spend 3-4 months on the road. Use a 11” iPad Pro. And two SSD externals. I shoot w Fuji medium format. No issues. The larger iPad tho nice, is just too large and I don’t need it
How often do you want to change the thumbnail?
Roman: Yes
Hahaha until I can figure out how to make one that doesn’t look like crap 😂. You’d think I would be good at that nearly 2 years in but I guess not
Jokes aside it’s makes so much difference.
@@snapsbyfox Sometimes I think oh a new video and wait I already seen this 😂
good job on calming us all down with the facts and nothing more. hypelessness is a virtue, and you model it very well. thanks roman
by the way, I just got the 11" M1, and like it, but can't see any performance increase over my 12.9" from 2017 (gen 2). they are all incredibly powerful. but I do like the Pencil v2
But if you can have a bit more cash, go for the 11.
please tell us ... is it worth to spend an extra 300 bucks or just go with the 11"
If this is gonna be your main and only computer that you will use for editing and not just playing games, then yes. Otherwise no
Very helpful video Roman. Going for a 12.9 2021
I’m so used to use computers and the macOS is still lacking some key features to be my only device but I’m strongly considering to buy the 11’ to add to my workflow.
Thanks for the very balanced opinions! I will definitely wait for what they say at WWDC before making my decision
Top notch review mate👌🏾
Does blooming affects notetaking??? In dark background?
Wow this video had everything I needed. Thanks
Gets a Thumbs up just for the review based off the niche THANK GOD some in my shoes reviewed!
the most important thing for the apple ecosystem is that you have to pay generally. Im more of a hobbyist with low budget so you can imagine what im doing from a desktop. This ipad is for professionals or those who was the money to spend for no reason. Anyway ,Roman, very informative prospective! Thanks for sharing, greeetings from Greece!
yeah this is deffo either a luxury item or for people who need it for work. Cheers!
Nice one mate! Thanks for the details, thorough and helpful 👍
Great vid, really makes me want to use my 11” for editing more. Would love to know more about your workflow for importing and backing up, and what hardware you use to do so?
I will be making that video later this year as i have only just made the 100% ipad switch so there will be a few bugs and learning curves to iron out
@@snapsbyfox look forward to it, importing is the biggest obstruction IMO
Hi I've decided to part-x my micro 4/3rds equipment and move to Fujifilm x-t4 which is what I wanted to go with in the first place but was persuaded me to go for Olympus.
So after watch your videos amongst others channels thought I'll take the plunge before I get to much stuff on 4/3rds
Thanks for info
Just one thing pc or Mac and what spec should I go for
Thanks
Again
I’d say if you want a mac go for the MacBook Air M1 or if you have more $ to spend, wait for the 14” MBP
Been wondering about this latest iPad pro for photo editing. This settles a lot for me. Thanks. Subbed!
Cheers! I am also gonna be working on a workflow video for ipad as it seems many people are jumping over
That mobility is addicting. I love to upload pics from camera to iPad during the holiday and see it.
What I don't like is that photos are not in full res in "files" app... So it kinda forces me to work with "photos" app
Not full res?? Hmmm not sure what you mean…
@@snapsbyfox When I zoom picture in files app, it is blurry. When I take this pic from files and copy it to photos app and zoom, the picture is displayed well.
Great review! I particularly liked the honesty of: 'Is it worth it? That's up to you.' 🙂
Great review!!
Can I ask please what hub/ dongle do u use for ur ipad?
As I can't find any option for the M1 Ipad pro.
Did the 12.9” feel too oversized when reading books/articles/comics?
Only thing I don’t like about LR on the iPad Pro is the fact that we can’t really fix chromatic aberration. You need an actual computer for that. ☹️
Try Affinity photo
Unrelated, that blue fish and chip food truck looks amazing!
What screen brightness do you edit at? Something that I think doesn’t really get addressed with iPad photo editing.
As a landscape photographer, this is the main thing I’m hoping for too.
I've asked a few RUclipsrs this but no one has replied. What software do you use to cull your images and does Photo Mechanic work on Ipad???
Lightroom and no it doesn’t
@@snapsbyfox and do you find that culling in LR is quick as I've heard and seen that photo mechanic does it much better and faster???
Very helpful review - thanks
why is LR not good for ipad work? is it true that there are no presests on the ipad softear? can you elaborate on that pls? thank you!
huh? not sure hat you mean but LR on ipad is great and all presets work fine
@@snapsbyfox or classic
The M chip is very nice performance wise & the new screen. But, I would wait for the M chip to pass a few generations in the iPad state, if you already have the 12.9” 2020. It would be cool to see a much larger iPad, say like a slate to do more professional work on, but the 12.9” is good size for more “Instagram” photo editing. Cool channel by the way, recent subscriber ✌🏻
How’s your center stage camera quality? can you see the vibrant moving grains within center stage?
Haven’t even used that feature yet lol been too busy editing photos. I had a very quick look just now and it is great in good light and grainy in poor light as expected
@@snapsbyfox Do you think software can fix center stage quality and blooming effect. Else might need to downgrade to 2020
Why is the size of the photos I took with sony alpha 7r4 on iPad pro 12.9 only 1616×1080?
I really enjoyed this video Roman. Very informative. Although as someone who has ordered a 512GB version I now feel slightly wary 😅. Still got to wait 4-6 weeks for it to arrive but I can’t wait to give editing on it a go. It’s replacing my iPad 2.
Haha as long as you have a good external SSD then you will be ok. 4-6 weeks?! Wow. So long. I guess only the 2tb versions are available right away
@@snapsbyfox Yeah, my plan is to by a couple of T7’s so I have a backup copy. Unsure what storage size to get of those just yet. Yeah, it’s an annoyingly long wait. I just want to be using it now! 😅. I’d love to see a video on your workflow with just using an iPad including your organisation etc. Hope you’re doing good 👍
I hate YT... I thought for months you stopped posting videos .... thank you for nothing algorithm
I'm currently waiting for my iPad pro 12.9 128gb and this review was really good.
@@snapsbyfox Thank you :D
I guess I'll go with Affinity Photo then. I hope that I can soon get my ipad so that I can finally edit my photos.
Major kudos to FujiFilm for being super awesome in replacing the XT-4 body.
Roman, I find you’re content unique and thoroughly comprehensive.
I’ve only ever edited on an iPad. I just upgraded from the 2018 iPad 6 pro to the 2020 11 pro. Not convinced it was an especially great move.
Love this video and I want your chair 😂
You can't have it, i already called dibs! 😂😝
What % of rgb, srgb it gets?
Can you calibrate the screen now on the iPad like you can Samsung s7+, which is fantastic for editing
no idea but doubt it.
Affinity photo’s raw developer is useless
you remind me of kris akabusi a bit
I am using iPad Pro 2020 11", MacBook Pro 16", and Fujifilm XT4. Me and Roman are exactly a same person. 😂
i bought a M1 11 inch iPad Pro from 2020 A12z 11 incher….b/c i broke my fucking screen about 2 months after the warranty an 2 weeks before the release of 2021 M1 model…fk me…
That’s a stinker :(
I love the train B roll at 07:35
It's so sad that the iPad is the best tablet on the market.
*Rant over.*
yeah man, all these tech giants seem to have an agenda. I guess we live in a world where they are needed for modern society
