- Earth is about to capture a new mini-moon for 56 days. This mini-moon is asteroid 2024 PT5, a space rock measuring 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter. It likely originated in the Arjuna asteroid belt. It's much smaller than the large asteroids that usually make the news. However, its small size makes it more susceptible to being temporarily captured by Earth's gravity-giving it the chance to become a mini-moon.

That’s a great idea! But they should have started on that project 5 years ago. They could have gotten near it and attached a set of parachutes to it, then slowed it down until it fell to Earth. At 32 feet I’m sure it’s heavy, but it really doesn’t matter if it lands hard, so long as it’s slowed down enough to prevent it from exploding. I’m sure scientists would love to examine it!
@@alphagt62 I was thinking more of attaching some thruster packs to it and guide it into a stable Earth orbit. Then over time slowing it down enough to dock it at the International space station where it could be examined without any re-entry scoring and burnup. If the orbit they show in the video is accurate I doubt they will get another shot at it like this for a very long time.
@@lightpawshird a once in a lifetime opportunity for sure. I like the idea of attaching it to the space station! A step toward actually living on an asteroid, and they could chip off pieces occasionally and send them to Earth on return trips. .

IF we decide to slow it down enough to let it become a permanent member in about the same orbit & path as our moon, could it possibly add some % of potential protection from future incoming mass strikes? Not quite sure how much the math would say there'd be any noticeable effect to us humans, But, this may add some % of push or counter pull of the moon's total effect on tides & migration worldwide.

Are scientists not putting any drone type telescope on this mini moon or any other upcoming Asteroids ? This way, without much effort, we all can know about space in depth, wherever such asteroids would be traveling, information would be coming as we still track Voyager.
