A dazzling comet is headed our way and it will most certainly outshine even the brightest stars in the night sky. The comet is named C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS). It was discovered in early 2023 when it was a billion km away, between the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn.
This comet has the potential to become the next great comet, a term used to describe comets that are so exceptionally bright that they capture the attention of even casual observers who aren't actively looking for them. These comets often become widely recognized outside of the astronomical community, making headlines and sparking public interest. The last comets to earn this title were Hale-Bopp in 1997 and McNaught in 2007, both of which put on spectacular displays.

Every time a comet approaches the earth and appears in the earth's sky it means that a major event is coming, usually something bad that will affect human life; such as a major war or a plague.
Yes
🤔👍
October 12. Calling it now. Clouds.
I’m in Washington state, so Im definitely gonna miss it. At least I got a good view of Neowise in arches and Death Valley.
We are probably going to have rain, thunderstorms and hail
Sshhhhhhhh
I get what you are saying and all the signs point to that. I've look at a lot of stuff this morning that God has led me into and I think that's the day. The 1 Thessalonians 4:16 day.
4:17 isn't until the end.
Fortunately, the Weather Channel says we'll have clear skies for A3's return 26,000 years later.
As an older person I've had the privilege to see Haley's, Hale bopp, Macnaught and Neowise. I love comets and I'm so pleased that I could have a chance to see another one! Hale Bopp was the best and my daughter and I were obsessed with it. We went every evening to a look out point on top of a hill. Other comet enthusiasts gathered each evening at this point with some of them sharing their telescopes. Us and other comet fans brought snacks to share for our evening viewing sessions. We called it comet kos (Afrikaans for food). It was such a special time with strangers from all backgrounds bonding over a mutual admiration for comets.
Did you miss Hyakutaki ?
Watching Jupiter take all those shots to its side! Amazing ❤
@@kevinedwards6093Hale-Bopp was brighter, but damn! Comet 1996/B2 Hyakutake was *GORGEOUS!* I wish I had a camera back then to capture some shots.
I remember Comet Arend Roland in 1957
I went camping for spring break at Dinosaur National Monument in CO when Hale Bopp was in the night sky. It was spectacular!
My money is on it being cloudy across the UK and we miss it 🤣
Hopefully not 🌠
I feel your pain. Almost every meteor shower, eclipse and anything interesting to see in the sky, it will be cloudy and rainy here in the Washington, DC area. Fingers crossed.
Wow
You could move to a none Muslim country. On another planet.
Comets are visible for weeks.
I was 11 when Hale-Bopp appeared and I still clearly remember it! Got lucky seeing Neowise as well. Now, I'm really hoping for this comet to put on a show!
I remember Haleys comet also. Such cool things to see in the night sky.
Me too I was living in Indiana at the time, and it was visible for 2 or 3 day's very clearly, it is the marvel in the dark sky, bright and beautiful
I was a toddler when I saw Hale-Bopp and remember it well, too. Only saw a few comets since then but they all paled in comparison.
Heavens gate members are still riding it
I lived in France and saw it for a few days, then I went to England a week later and it was just coming into view, beautiful sight
Beware, the brightness of comets is never predictable. I remember the fiasco of Comet Khoutek in 1973, predicted to be the brightest comet for many decades, only to turned out to be barely visible with the naked eye. I believe this comet will be bright only when I see it clearly visible in the night sky.
This.
My thoughts exactly. I'm old enough to remember the Khoutek mis-prediction and have not trusted any comet prediction since.
That was my first thought. I've watched for comets since grade school, and I remember the hype over Comet Kohoutek when I was in the fifth grade.
Hale-Bopp was very photogenic in twilight. Hyakutake was ghostly-beautiful and unusual with its north polar orientation, and it was at its brightest in total darkness. I want more like those two.
@@petuniasevan Nothing quite like a good comet. As long as it misses us 😅 I Hope this one lights up. Anything in space is beautiful and amazing. As long as you don't think about it too much. Then it becomes rocks falling from the sky. Which is actually terrifying. 🤔
I saw pretty clearly when I was in high school. Our street ran East/West and I remember doing out at dusk with my mother to see it in the western sky late in the evening.
....Regardless of what this guy says, the absolute BEST COMET of my lifetime was Comet Hyakutaki in 1996. It came out of nowhere as was visable for 3 days. Stretched across a third of the sky. You could actually watch it move against the backdrop of the stars behind it.................
Totally!! It was freaking *amazing!!* My astronomy professor at the time said it was comparable to Comet West in its beauty.
I lived in Toronto back then, and even with the city lights, comet 1996/B2 was obvious to the naked eye. In dark skies, it extended from the zenith to nearly the horizon. And at its closest it was visible _all night long._ I just wish I had a camera back then...
@@nicholashylton6857 I saw it from Joshua Tree/Jumbo Rocks. I remarked to my friend, now we know why they sacrificed virgins. He concurred. Almost a religious experience…
@@paulricketts1089 Ahhhh.....Joshua Tree.....Ever hear of Gram Parsons? (Once a boyfriend of Emmy Lou Harris) Several people snuck into the funeral home where he was laying, removed his body out at night and temporarily buried him in Joshua Tree.
@@blackholeentry3489 yes, I have heard about this. Yearsssss ago........
I saw it from Brisbane, Australia. It was amazing!
Recent studies regarding Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas have shown that it might be disintegrating but the scientists from observatories have confirmed that the comet is healthy and doing fine which is a great thing. At this point, we can just hope that the comet successfully goes through the perihelion stage and lives up to its expectation unlike Comet ISON which had a disastrous fate. Hopefully the comet will continue to perform as expected and we might get a dazzling show in the skies during October.. Happy skygazing to everyone :)
Yes! The reason why some thought it might be disintegrating has been explained in the video. However, it was just a play of optics and orbital dynamics. Really looking forward to this comet ☄️ 🌌
@@TheSecretsoftheUniverse Yeah. Loved the video by the way.. great analysis as always Rishabh. Keep growing :)
I'm still mildly annoyed about ISON lol
Fearmongering hoax
@@LiarsExposed-c1iare you stoned, or naturally this slow, or maybe your CGI LOLHAHAHAHA HAHAHA HAHAHA HAHAHA HAHAHA HAHAHA 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🐓💩🤡
I remember seeing Hale-Bopp with its double tail, and before that Comet Hyakutake in 1996. Both were easily visible with the naked eye. Hope this one is as good or better than those.
God, I hope so! The 1990s gave us two Great comets *_and_* comet SL9's impact on Jupiter over a period of just three or so years.
Hyakutake was the one I remember, it was unbelievably bright in the North North Western Sky in the UK.
@@stephenhester9804 Yes, Hyakutake was very bright and had a very long tail. It came very close to the North celestial pole, which was great for photography, as you could do a fairly long exposure without having to track it.
I do believe (without looking it up) that Hale Bopp was even brighter and seemed to stay within view for a longer time.
Would be awesome if this one was as good as those ones. But, prediction how bright a comet will be isn't an exact science and if you are old enough to remember Comet Kohoutek, you know what I mean. Predictions at the time said that it might even be visible during the day time. 🙄
I too remember the 90’s as a special time. I just happened to be at the Orange County Fair at the OC Astronomical Society’s area on the first night that shoemaker-Levy’s impact could be seen in the Western Hemisphere. I got to watch on somebody’s telescope on a TV.
Comet Hyakitake’s tale was as long as my house looking at it in my front yard in the city of Anaheim.
Hale Bopp was just unbelievably bright! We chose restaurants with outdoor patios to eat dinner at for a few days. I was really amazed at the number of people who didn’t notice until I pointed it out!
Good times! I’ve been waiting for even one event to rival just those 3 to show my kids.
@@user-fp2eo7yw8i At the time of those two comets, I lived far from any city, which made the skies there very dark. So, it was very easy to see those comets. Now, I live in a large city, so would likely have to get out of it, to get a good view of the comet.
halebop was magic
I remember Hale-Boop as a kid!!!
Hale-Bopp was a -1 magnitude; this comet is forecasted to be a -3 magnitude. If this forecast plays out, EVERYONE who wants to see the comet will be able to see it.
I missed Pons-Brooks, so I'm hoping to see Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. Thanks for the detailed information. It makes comet watching more significant.
Nicely explained. Appreciate your support and efforts to bring the post to our knowledge ❤
One observation. The brightness of a comet is the total brightness spread across the whole comet added together. So it will not have a pinpoint brightness like a star does. So a -1 magnitude star will appear brighter than a -1 magnitude comet since the comet's light is spread across a larger apparent area.
I was able to watch Hale-Bopp every day, it was so bright it could be seen during the day as well as at night. I even watched it as I drove home from work a few days in Colorado. We can only hope this comet will be as wonderful!
Thank you ❤❤❤
Happy sky gazing to you as well
Hope that 12th oct isn't cloudy
Cuz a magnitide of -3 for a comet, might be the rarest thing of the century ....❤❤❤❤
One of my earliest memories is of comet Ikeya-Seki in 1965. The memory is dim, not much more than one visual snapshot and a feeling of awe, but I'm grateful to have any memory of it at all because I was a very small child.. Hale-Bop was also great, really beautiful, but not like Ikeya-Seki.
I'll catch it next time, bit busy now.
I remember that SOU made a video on this comet a year ago. I was eager to see this comet in sep 2024 and here we are! Time Really Flies
Yes! The comet had just been discovered back then. A lot has changed in 18 months. We have more data on the comet's behaviour 🌌 💙
October, I'm sure the skies will be cloudy.
I saw Hale-Bopp from the beach at Kourion in Cyprus in 1997. It was spectacular.
I’m 65 and remember my mom waking me up to see a comet probably in the late 60’s or early 70’s. I still remember how it looked and my excitement!
Think it was Haley's Comet
probably comet Bennett in early 1970
I remember seeing Comet West in early 1976. I'm 68 now and Comet West is at the top of my "most impressive" list.
Kohoutek?
@@ChicagoMel23 Lol! Infamous dud and the reason astronomers are loathe to predict how spectacular a comet might turn out. Probably Bennett.
It will be a nice birthday present for me. I saw Comet West when I was 12. It was HUGE and a -3.0 Magnitude. There has been nothing remotely like it since either. I remember it like it was yesterday.
This is why ancient cultures believed a comet is bringing destruction or bad luck
also a healthy dose of uncut ignorance
@@nobeoddy1664 - The Mayans were light years ahead of us, in astrology, architecture, even today. Ignorance is displayed more in ypur comment
We are on the same page, bro
Usually, it did.
Usually, it did
Hah! I was around for Kohoutek, where they said EXACTLY the same thing for months, and when the time came, it turned out to be the flop of the decade. The promised "bigger than anything else you've ever seen, and probably bigger than you'll ever see again" event turned out to be barely visible with binoculars despite being 20 miles from the nearest source of light pollution. After that fiasco, I'm not likely to bother getting too worked up about it.
It happened with Hale Bopp though
It's "Hale-Boop"!
Wow !
Your's video was much better than I was watched earlier.
Thanks for such an awesome piece.
I remember when i saw Hale bop was snow mobiling. One of the memorable moments in my life, i was 11 or 12 😊
Wow!! The episode is so attention grabbing that I couldn't keep track of time and it came to an end. Kudos SOU! 👏👍✨💫🌌❤️
I saw Hale Bopp on my way to the Grand Canyon. It was an awe inspiring. I can't imagine seeing a comet brighter than Hale Bopp.
Thank you!!
Oh, Hale-Bopp...I missed my ticket to paradise last time. Pudding and vodka, anyone?
There will not be another Hayle Bop in our lifetime …it was amazing
Wait until the asteroid hits the earth.,
I find it funny how every time a spectacular event happens in the sky it's *ALWAYS* either cloudy or light-polluted
Hopefully no one will try to hitch a ride on it this time. 👀
To soon for a heaven's gate joke? 🤔😁😁
@@TheAncientAstronomerNope. It's been more than 23.5 years. Let the jokes commence.
I witnessed. Comet West in mid 1970s. It was spectacular. It was like I was chasing it thru the mountains of WA state on my way for some steelhead fishing. I saw it for 3 consecutive days in the early morning hours. If this comet is any where near as spectacular as comet West it will truly be something to behold
That's a Grand memory!🙌🏼🥰 especially the steelhead fishing part🍻🙃😎
Comet West was amazing. One of the most spectacular comets of my lifetime. I don’t know why it didn’t get more publicity.
Same in Maine, often shrouded in clouds!! Hale-Bopp was incredible, as well as Hailey's comet..have seen afew great ones in my lifetime, hope to see Atlas too🫰🫰
I saw hale-bopp! The most magnificent sight I’ve seen in the sky ever then or since!
Bold prediction. Comets are notoriously difficult to judge till they get inside the system.
Informative... Thank you..
You're welcome 💙
Liked this video and shared it to a Facebook Aurora watch group. ❤
exciting. I've got a great view of the Western horizon and I live in a rural area... Thanks for all the information.
The prediction on the Yoshida comet page is based on a thorough analysis of its light curve. It indicates a magnitude of 2. This corresponds to the brightness of Polaris. Nice but not "outshining the brightest stars" and possibly not easy to see for the general public. Be aware that this brightness is distributed over a significant area of the sky. Although a brighter development is still possible please refrain from hyping comets early.
Thank you for works to educate, I’m great full
Nothing will ever beat Hale-Bopp, but I may be biased since my surname is Bopp. 😂
Best comet [that I can remember] in my life was West in 1976...it was by far brighter and more impressive than anything I've seen since. The brightest comet IN my lifetime was Ikeya-Seki in 1965, but I was 4 years old and of course didn't see it. Ikeya-Seki was so bright it was very easily visible in broad daylight.
Love your videos mate ❤
Thanks a ton!
The great Comet Bennett of early 1970 was far and away the best I've ever seen, Haley's was such a disappointment after waiting for it for almost 30 years since I was about 10, hope this one is a great one.
I recommend not drinking the coolaid.
Please let it be clear in Central California ❤
Hale-Bopp was easy to see without a telescope in the New Mexico sky. We had a 5 acre place in light pollution protected Alamogordo.
we had a few last year that didn't amount to much. This one has been buzzing round for ages. I'm not holding out much hope......
Hale bopp was awesome
I tracked ZTF for weeks with my telescope and got lots of photos. Got great photos of Hale-Bopp. ALso was in Malawi, Africa when Halley's came back in 1984. No photos of that one though. Comets are cool.
Heavens gate remembers the hale bopp.
Comets only mean one thing, Dragons!!
Back in 1973 Comet Kohoutek was going to be a splendid sight, damp squib.........
I will not believe it is that bright until I see it. But I have doubts.
Informative video, but, where in the sky are we supposed to look for it?
Preparing for a special experience of Comet Atlas!
Lucky for the artic regions and middle latitude countries have seen this astronomical event 😊😊❤❤
Arctic
First visible on my birthday! I'll be watching.
😎 COOL, good news!!!
Same year, i seen a "object" haulin butt from north to south. It was big and left a long, wide, straight tail on it and it left the 3 a.m. sky within maybe a minute or two. It was big but a long ways away
Thanks!
In 1970, while driving from Long Beach to Seattle, Washington on the California Oregon border. Dead overhead was a beautiful comet and was straight overhead. I don't know what the name of it was. I never heard anything about it. I wonder if you could let me know what comment that might have been thank you.
Good thing autumn just started in India,
Uhh, can we get a shorthand version of this comet's name? I can't imagine how to reference it in a normal conversation LOL
😍😍amazing video SOU 💗💗
I'm so sad that I didin't saw the Nishimura or the Devil Comets because there has always a cloudy sky I really wanted to see those comets defienitily the green Nishimura comet found by a japanese astronomy! What is this comet's name and is it possible to see in october when it's coming if there' no a cloudy sky? Here in the countryside village middle of nowhere around of the forests without the city lights is the best place to watch a comet on the farm field, but there's no high hills only small hills, but I will watch it at home our backyard it's always AMAZING to hear a new comet is coming thank you for the great News SOU! 🌠
I am 85 i remember halley .
Rarely do i get my hopes up about the reporting of a comet and ots brightness being all spectacular since they tend to rarely shine as bright as reported to be
I saw the Hale bop comet and it was awesome. I hope I get to see this one.
The moon will be a waxing gibbous on 10/12 - might be better to try to see the comet a few nights earlier than on the 12th.
I hope this comet is as bright as predicted. Comets are so unpredictable. It could easily disintegrate when it approaches the sun.
A comet is a diffuse object, apparent brightness is calculated over an area of its visual surface. Stars are point objects. Even if this turns out to be a large bright comet, I doubt it will appear to be as as bright as brighter stars.
A comet has been prophesied. The Bible calls it Wormwood.
Ha! Everytime something happen in the sky it's ✨️ cloudy. nWo seeds the clouds ⛅️ on a weekly basis. Last time it was a clear day was in July for bout week n a half. Been cloudy since then. Not partly, gray all the way to the horizon in all four directions.
I hear this comet blew up last year
Does anyone know which Direction we should look at (in the Northern hemisphere)?
H/B comet was north of us.
I believe you look in the west for the first days and for the last days you look in the east
I hope just the surface heats up and leaves a tail and not the core.
I verified that A3's velocity as it approaches the Sun can be 180,000 miles per hour (and up to 224,000 mph!)
I remember Hale-Bopp being amazing, and Neowise being basically just a fuzzy, moderately dim disappointment. Both were supposed to be amazing.
Nothing in life is guaranteed. Great Comets are rare.
Such a nice and incredible video 🥰🥰
It's a rock covered in ice... 💫 💫 💫 ...and they can see it already! It's going to light up the sky?
Worth suffering through the commercial!
Under the horizon for me in the northern hemisphere.
12:29 HALLEY!
How will visibility be in Southern Hemisphere? Living in South Africa.
Possible clouds / rain in Central US according to the National Weather Service. Keeping a eye on this.😮😱 Also have a possible Lunar eclipse Sept. 2024. Clouds may foul this as well.
People need short names for each comet, so it can easily mentioned while speaking.
Wormwood
LOL
Touching Shan 😅
October 10, 2024
Rainy season in India. We will miss it.
This comet will cross Earth's orbit and Venus's a couple of times. We’ve likely ensured Earth’s safety, but what if Venus is struck? I’d guess the comet isn’t massive enough to alter Venus’s orbit and affect us.
It's bringing back the people that committed suicide when that other comet was here. 😇 ☄️
as for the southern hemisphere when the best time before sunrise?..Will the northern hemisphere get the glory views on this one?
This going to be like the fourth or fifth one in the last few years that was supposed to be the one to outshine stars. Maybe this one?
Our next coin mooniac lol
