    After four years of extensive use, I have become a dedicated Em5 Mk2 fan and now a dedicated Robin Wong fan. Love your approach Robin. As a 70+ travel photographer I ditched all my heavy Canon gear and get remarkable stills and video from this fun-to-use camera. Just returned from shooting in Georgia and Armenia. Wow! I always shoot with a lightweight tripod and reckon it gives me total control and ultimate clarity. Biggest criticism is the start-up lag, especially shooting in RAW. Has that been improved? I am an Aussie by birth but grew up in Penang through the 50's. Still love Malaysia. Keep up the good work.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 лет назад

      Thanks. I don't feel any lag during start up though. Maybe there was that half second or less delay but that was the SSWF cleaning the sensor. And if I am working with anything crucial the camera is on all the time.

    • @langhamp8912
      @langhamp8912 5 лет назад +9

      I used to own the em5.2, and recall the start up time can be almost eliminated by making sure the camera is in single shot sing focus, with quick sleep off. Then, holding the button down when powering on almost instantly results in an in-focus shot.
      The Pen F has the same "problem", but again you can get an instanous shot by using the single shot single focus method.
      Note that you do have to turn on the camera once to charge the sensor. Once done the sensor stays charged even when off.

    Been following your blog for years now and IMHO you're one of the best photographers out there and I do love how you make your reviews, no fanboyism, no click bait, with actual output of how the camera will perform, and less BS! I still think your Pentax 645Z review is one of the best. Hope that you get more RUclips subscribers because you deserve it.

    Dear Robin, I bought the original EM5 after reading your articles. I loved it, and I loved the fact that backpacking in the mountains it was so light and small. I just gave that one to my granddaughter after the EM 5 iii came out, after reading and watching your articles on it. The improvement in dynamic range is significant and was one of the primary reasons for my change. I am quite happy with it, and I appreciate your help in getting both of these properly set up to start!
    With the 25mm 1.8 it is almost as portable as my iPhone. Thus, I can carry it with me most of the time. I don’t miss full frame.

    7:58 Some people give different smaller magnification numbers for the EM cameras likex0.68x instead of 1.37x. Does this depend on the lens used? I don't really want a huge viewfinder image. It's like sitting in the front row of the cinema! I like to feel that I can see the whole image at once.

    Hi Robin
    After having the OM-D-E-M5 mk 3 for a year for every day photography its great. I have the M1 mk 3 as well but it hardly ever goes out. I have paired the M5 mk 3 with the Olympus 12-200 lens and it has enabled me to take great images on long hikes without the weight associated with the M1 mk3 and 12-100. Yes I use the M1 mk3 for indoor work and if I have need for that little extra, but in reality it very rare. I do take the 25mm 1.8 with me if I feel I need the extra sharpness.

    I was just about to purchase the Sony RX 7iii but i was not sure , so I decided to keep looking/researching for the one that fits my needs. Im glad I did because i came across the E-M5-Mark 3 and in the process found Robin Wong's youtube. Love how you do the breakdown / presentation that makes it more enjoyable to watch and learn. Purchased my new camera today and subscribed. Looking forward to a great photography experience. Great Job Robin ....

    Hi Robin my name is Gareth Lovering, I have just bought an Olympus EM-5 Mk3, when I started using it I came across a setting which it seems a lot of people don't know about. if you turn the dial to Auto, press ok, then ok again, select express motions, press ok and then press the up button all the way to the top you can use these settings to freeze waterfalls, I would you to mention this if possible on one of your next blogs.

    Hi Robin, thanks for a helpful user review and some excellent shutter therapy along the way. When the specs were leaked, like a lot of people I was disappointed that construction would be plastic. However, having got hands-on with the new camera today I can only say that the build quality feels solid and high quality. I'm looking to replace an original EM5 with a small, light camera for street work and paired with the 17mm f1.8 this should do the job very well.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 лет назад +2

      Glad that you got your hands on one, it is hard to convince people that it did not feel cheap or plasticky at all, all you have to do it hold it yourself!

    Hi Robin, I made just a test and used the E-M5 Mark III via Elgato Link Cam Link 4k as a webcam - with full risk it stops during the meeting - and, interestingly, the battery worked for 123 minutes! So I was able to use one battery load for 2 hours. Olympus put a 30 minutes restriction on the camera for video recording because if there is more than 30 minutes of continuous video recording the camera is treated by customs import authorities as a video camcorder and they charge higher customs for video recorders than cameras and camera sellers of cameras want usually bypass these higher customs and put these restrictions on video recording. (That it records only 29 minutes is said also in the specifications, as I just learned.)

    Hi Robin, I am Anggra from Indonesia.
    I bought Olympus E-M10 mark iii "because of you".
    The main reason is because your claims about its size and features especially IBIS. I believe that to compensate its sensor size taking pictures in low light, IBIS will let me have lower shutter speed. It also enables me to get sharp pictures in normal light because it can "disable" any movement while taking picture.
    Eventually I love the camera and use it more than I use my Nikon D5600, eventhough I think their image quality is the same and pictures from my Nikon slightly sharper than the Olympus. All using only kit lens.
    Anyway, I am thinking about buying an ex used E-M5 mark iii because at that time I failed taking focused and sharp pictures of people doing sports. I believe that the E-M5 mark iii is far beyond E-M10 mark iii in term of autofocusing and video features (capturing images from video).
    I've viewed your video taking tennis athlete with very good focused and sharp pictures, do you think E-M10 mark iii can get similar image quality in the same situation?
    What do you think? Should I buy E-M5 mark iii or just upgrade my skill on existing cameras?
    Thank you very much, Robin.

      This is what I was amazed about and questioned because I also can only see a 1 stop difference between EM5-II to EM1-II. ISO6400 on the EM5-II is pretty poor. There are high ISO examples in the Camera Jabber online review and they look remarkable! This is one heck of a camera.

    I love the EM5 series; this just adds the biggest missing features -- PDAF, USB charging, and improved low light. 4K @ 60fps will turn off some users, but you'll probably be better off using the 120fps 1080p if you are doing action anyways. Price is competitive, but the body needs to drop another $200 before I'll buy it.
    When I first bought the orginal EM5 mk-1, I recall its biggest missing features was peak-focusing. Manually focusing with my 17mm f/0.95 lens was really hit and miss -- and often, miss. So annoying to have taken a great shot, but got the nose in focus only, and not the eye. gah... now, with Video being a big part of my flow, cAF is where I find most MFT cameras need help.

    • @robinwong

Wish we had PEN-F with the same functionality. In any case great review and images Robin. Great review Robin, as always. You almost had me convinced to go M1 MkI to M5 MkIII but minutes after watching Rob Trek's comparison of the M1 MkII and the M5 MkIII I did what you always recommend - I went to 'shoot more photographs' of the Spring blossom coming out here in sunny Normandy, France.
    I noticed I was carrying the OM-D M1 Mk1 in the same way I used to carry my Nik D600 - arm down by my side with the camera hanging from three fingers, with index finger hovering over the top-deck controls. With a wrist strap for safety, this is a Quick-Draw Magraw way to hold a camera.
    The grip on the M1 is big enough to do this. I don't think this would work securely with the M5. That grip is too shallow and as a result the battery inside it is a great deal less 'juicy' than the battery in the M1.
    So, although the M5 MkIII is very nearly the same camera as the M1 MkII, as far as image making goes, the grip [and battery it contains] is the deal-breaker for me.

    Few details for SD cards.
    1. E-M5 Mark III can use UHS-II cards.
    Cards like these can have up to 300mb/s. Using those will speed up the camera.
    2. Olympus maintains a SD Card compatibility list for each camera.
    If you are making just hobby photography, it does not matter that much which brand and type of card you use. In case you want to go PRO, you might just to be sure that in case of technical difficulty, you will not be dismissed by the Olympus support for that. At this point there are listed SD cards made by Toshiba and SanDisk.

    Awesome!!! I just think hope they kept the Magnesium Alloy body, like the two previous E-M5. But based on your review, I think it is definitely worth to upgrade in the near future from my original OM-D E-M5. Especially having the same sensor, auto-focus system and IBIS capacity as the OM-D E-M1 Mark II. It's like a mini version of it.

    • @fabioarodrigues
      @fabioarodrigues 5 лет назад

      @@robinwong true, but at the same time, the Magnesium alloy body of the original EM-5, gave it a more premium feel. And when you compare the EM-5 Mk iii with its direct competitor, the Panasonic G95, you get almost all the features of the EM-5 Mk III (4k video, 5 axis IBIS, weather sealing, etc) in a Magnesium Alloy body and $500 less (which you can use to buy a good lens).
      The 5 axis IBIS might not be as good as Olympus (but getting there) and the only thing it is not on par is at the AF capability, as it uses contrast with DFD (which is reasonable) instead of the new Olympus phase detection.
      It is a tough decision.

    • @fabioarodrigues
      @fabioarodrigues 5 лет назад

      For the price they are charging for the camera, it should at least be Magnesium Alloy, just to give it a premium feel, as the previous E-M5 models did.

    The E-M1ii just selling $900 in my city, it’s more powerful, more solid(the E-M5iii is build in plastic) and much cheaper, if you want lightweight, go for E-M10 iii, a dozens grams lighter and cost you just $320, I don’t see any reason buy the E-M5ii unless the sensor outperform all other Olympus camera.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 лет назад

      Yeah, no reason to buy E-M5 Mark II now. E-M5 Mark III has the best sensor from Olympus and it offers the best Olympus can offer now, outperforming all cameras that does not have the same sensor. Go for it!

But I,m wondering how is this camera hold with 12-40mm Pro with an example Godox V1 flash? Would this combo still be comfortable or just get EM1ii.
