  • Round 1 of our "Cleaning NES carts" series!
    The focus of this series will be primarily to address common issues with loose NES carts. With our first contestant being Metal Gear!
    I'd rate this a "light" cleaning, but there are a few trouble spots that we run into, and a few things that we end up just leaving.
    Tools I used:
    -Heptane
    -All Purpose Cleaner
    - Paper Towels
    - Qtips
    - Toothbrush/ stiffer brush
    - 3.8mm security bit (Gamebit)
    - Small scrapers
    - Dry erase marker
    This is the first time (I think) I've talked about the 5 levels of cleaning. It's always good to give potential pickups an initial assessment of what all needs to be done to fix it up. Not only can it help you understand value vs work needed, but can also help you quickly identify games that you feel you can clean in a snap.
    I'll get into more detail about the 5 levels later on, but think about what you would consider a "light" cleaning vs a "heavy" cleaning. What areas of video game restoration do you want to be able to improve on?
    I'll keep making videos of each cart I get, never know when we might run across a problem you've had!

    Thanks for this valuable info! Please do more of these NES cart cleaning videos, so "feel good" to watch. Ever glue those tiny pin like standoffs back in place that rattle around inside the cart?

      I realized the other day that I give my NES collection a cleaning every year, but never film it. So that whole thing might make for a good twitch stream!
      I have reglued those pegs! I've also rebuilt them using the glue and baking soda trick. Honestly, I kind of like the accuracy I get from building my own with glue... but then it gets into this weird "did I modify this game?" conundrum...

      It's useful for removing little bits and pieces of things (like when removing RedBox stickers, blocking overspray, all sorts of nonsense!

    Another great one man, love the longer discussion videos. I've had a retrotrio for a while and I think I'll finally start picking up some nes and snes games. Beat mgs3 for the first time yesterday on my vita, and for bonus content has metal gear 1 and 2. I'll be running through it there, but I'm hoping I'll find it at a local shop too

      Thank you!!
      Yeah prices aren't terrible right now for carts if you don't mind them loose. I figure I'll find boxes for all my loose SNES and NES someday!!

    Can I use the all purpose cleaner on generic accessories and controllers too such as Wii wheels or Wii remotes?

    • @RestoreAndReplay
      @RestoreAndReplay  2 года назад

      Of course! I tend to wipe down all accessories pretty regularly with an all purpose cleaner. Just be careful not to get too much cleaner in the seams or anywhere. But it does wonders to remove finger oils and grime!

    Curious what that brown/grey texturing is over the black part of the label. Is it dirt, abrasion or separation of the laminate?

    • @RestoreAndReplay
      @RestoreAndReplay  2 года назад +1

      Primarily the lamination of the label breaking down, and getting dirty! I've considered making a video showing how to remove the lamination, but it's a bit of a risky maneuver (you can easily damage the label). But that label will definitely make a few more appearances in the near future.
      With the lamination in such poor condition I wanted to remove whatever old residue was on there, but basically stop there for now.

    I love these cleaning videos but I usually watch them to relax like ASMR, so commentary kinda takes me out of it. I mean no offence because you definitely seem to know your stuff.

    • @RestoreAndReplay
      @RestoreAndReplay  2 года назад

      No offence taken! The reason the videos are longer than you'd expect is so people can follow along and not necessarily have to listen to me ramble too. I encourage anyone to mute my audio and have their favorite music playing in the background while they watch!
      And actually, my "disassembly and basic cleaning" videos are the real format of the series. All of my other videos will eventually be turned into the same format with a written instructional guide you can follow along with!
      I've tried making more ASMR-style videos, but the minute I go silent my cats think it's time to shout their opinions!

      @@RestoreAndReplay Muting the audio isn't really an option since the audio of what's happening is one of the main interests of people that like the ASMR aspect of videos. But no worries man, I still find enjoyment even in this format so do what you have to do. Good luck with your future videos!
