EverettDudgeon138 quite right. But remember, Trey uses the clean channel run on full gain, and not the dirty channel of the 900’s, which eliminates the 900’s clipping diodes.
Finally another video Owen! I've been waiting, waiting and waiting! haha...don't worry, in the meantime I've been constructing a new 1x12 semi open back cab...Circle Of Tone
Circle Of Tone Hahaha you'll laugh when you see it. I think I over stated the "constructing" a bit. One Saturday morning I had the urge to make or tinker with something and have it done by Sunday night to test it without spending much money. So I found a $30 sealed 1x12" sub box for a car, on special, at my local Car sound/electronics shop and started modding it, I have a couple of cheap 12" eminence speakers, that come with the Jet City cabs, lying around to put in it. All I have left to do is connect and mount the input jack and mount the speaker. I learnt a lot in the process especially about the use of t-nuts or threaded inserts to mount the speaker. Next I'll make one from scratch and put the other 12" eminence lying around to compare
I still remember first time I heard Domination (even before Altars...) I couldn't believe my ears... great video!!! (BTW I absolutely love Kingdoms Disdained!!!!!)

Giovone Mendoza in the interview, he double tracked a Gibson Explorer on one side, a double tracked a Charvel Explorer on the other. I’ve only ever seen the Charvel explorer once in a photo. It’s red, one humbucker, and two single coil pickups.

Love the vid. One problem. Trey has used Marshall JCM 900 4100 models since day one, and still uses them with marshall cabinets. He also has a thing for PAF style pickups.
* morbid angel looked cool & sexy AF 😅😅 and yes Trey is almost pathologically shy, but such an amazing person nonetheless. Analog is blood - blood IS LIFE! x
I don't think the gear is quite right. Altars of Madness was recorded on a BC Rich international ironbird with a dimarzio x2n and he also used a Charvel Model 5FX live as well. On later albums he used PAF Pro's on the same guitar, a Hamer flying V, and an RG550 for leads. 7 string stuff was done on an ibanez UV7BK and RG7620, both with blazes. RAT used was a rack version.
I’ve AB’d a lot of shredders and my fav tonally (cad to tone ratio) are the old Kramer’s. Ibanez seem to have a habit of concentrating on comfort (lightweight, huge frets, smooth even tone) and lack any surprises. It’s like a square wave cones out of them with little variation/surprises. Silky and smooth but...boring. I much prefer the raunch/snark/in your face Gibson style beef. Harder to play but more solid/dynamic.
That's funny, I just the other day played an old Kramer, the first one I tried. I know what you mean, it's a little harder to play, but it's more satisfying. It's like it talks to you better, and it listens to you better, you can dig right into it, for a more dynamic response. I handled a new, inexpensive, Kramer at a store, wasn't impressed, eventually bought a used Ibanez, and I installed emgs. Haha, circle of tone
The new Kramer I'd tried, nearly cut my hand and the action was a mile high. I've played guitars at Costco that feel better. It broke my heart, I'd always wanted a Kramer growing up.
Could you give me a link where you 'slag off' Ibanez, etc 😅... I am new to your channel and I seem to agree with most things you are into so ... Thanks!
The guitar tone changed with each album and this alone is enough to do a series of videos. There used to be some pics of them recording and there was an sm 57 inside a glass jar pointed at the Marshall cab to record sound effects. By the way Don`t forget about Carcass!
You should do a heavy metal version of its every day bro, It might be torture for you but then you would be getting Jared Dines level views. I'll volunteer to do the England is my city part.
Nice video a shame the focus on the camera messed up. Chapel of ghouls is probably my favourite from morbid angel although I'm not a death metal guy really
I always saw Trey with BC Rich guitars & was never far from that damn BOSS Flanger... LOL I heard the old DOD Death Metal pedal(not the Digitech version) was either used by Trey at some point or it was great for that tone.
You never know! If it’s Digital stuff probably not but I think he used a 5150 at one point. Could be wrong. If that’s the case yeah I’ll put it on the list.
I think a lot of the tone that we hear on those old recordings is purely based on Trey’s playing. It’s so spongy yet heavy at the same time. It’s very loose. On top of that, you have the solo tone. What is it? A phase 90 and a flanger combined with the rack gear?
I’m extending it. I was going to announce it on Christmas Day but the video has so few views... The RUclips algorithm fucked me. It was going great until I did a live video and since then I’m lucky to get 2k views in a week.
CIRCLE OF TONE. Hey thanks for the reply and tips on what program you use for creating them, I like practicing along with back tracks but a lot of them are not available online
metalblades4 A good place to start is reaper. For Drums EZdrummer 2 has sales sometimes and that is great for drums. You will need an interface. I recommend a uh7000 used. The preamps on that are amazing.
It would be cool of Morbid Angel to go back and re-record their old stuff. That riff sounded so fat and evil compared to the original, when recorded with today's equipment. Excellent job, man! I saw them live back in the late 90's with Pantera, Static-X, Slayer, and a band called Skrape in Bakersfield, CA. Quite an odd mix of bands I thought. But damn, was that a fucking awesome show. Anselmo came up and sang a song or two with Morbid Angel. Slayer was awesome as usual. And Static-X live sounded awesome. I was probably most impressed with Static-X that night. They sounded so much heavier than their recorded albums. Too bad bands can't capture that essence and bottle it. Live just trumps studio every time for me. Spending too much time trying to tweak everything perfectly and end up with an overly produced sound, that to me, just seems to kill the soul of the music. Glad to hear that Morbid Angel sticks with most of the same pedals and stuff. They've always sounded like 'Morbid Angel' when you hear them. Unlike say, Metallica... never know WHAT they'll sound like on their next album. Awesome job man, I'm gonna have to pull out some Morbid Angel and give a listen. It's been a while.
Acid001 I totally get the Static X live thing. I thought they were blah then saw them live and they blew my balls off. Amazing. I remember Testament re-recorded their old songs and they sounded awful. So it’s a fine line.
Well, after I had said that, I realized about the only person left in Morbid Angel that is the original is the founder and guitarist, so just the whole vibe would be different and yeah, vocals, everything would be different. I love metal, but I was not a fan of how it was mixed back in the 80's. Just seemed so flat. I'd have to scoop my EQ quite a bit just trying to get some of the bass guitar to fit somewhere in the mix on my stereo system. Once they started mixing in the bass more in the 90's I became much more happy with the mixing. I like to play bass guitar, and 80's metal unless it was like Iron Maiden, it was mixed in quite low most of the time. I've taken OLD King Diamond MP3 rips that I got off of CDs and remixed them. Sound was so low and bass was super thin. I realized there was only so much I could do with re-EQ and volume boost and some compression. It'd be nice if we could buy an album that just had everything on a separate track, instead of needing an EQ, we could just mix it how we wanted and be done with it.
Daniel Simon If you stick with it, it grows on you. I even like cherry orchard and cold lake by Celtic Frost. If you past the initial shock there are good riffs in there.
The only time people hated morbid angel is when they released illud divinium insanus before that I never met someone who was into extreme metal say anything negative about morbid angel.
DXP Reviews yep. And it’s been 5 years of bellyaching since. I think it’s a comments thing. People are so influenced by the comments on a video. Sometimes it’s subliminal. They will mimic the previous comment almost word for word. Perhaps they don’t read the previous comment consciously but they use the same adjectives etc so it can’t be a coincidence. When one sheep starts bleating about Vincent’s influence the rest follow like a flood and before you know it Vincent’s name is dirt. It’s the same with Lars etc. People ignore years of the best music they have heard just to be a part of the hate brigade.
I believe the best advice anyone can give to any musician is to not care what other people think in the slightest and make the music you want to make and what makes you happy. I like to use the Beatles as an example because they started out making pop music and everyone went crazy over them. The could have kept on writing the same style of pop songs for rest of their carriers and I bet they would still be as big as they were; But they decided lets try out some creative stuff with different instruments and a different approach to writing the songs. I really do believe the best music that can possibly be made is the music the musician wants to make.
Trey interview from formulas eraruclips.net/video/ij92BakibTgA/видео.htmlt 13:40 talks about gearGuitar-effects-ratt-flat eq always on-jcm900-channel a pre on10 post never above 5
Trey used a 900 not an 800. Only gibson I've seen him play is an explorer. Never seen him use actives. Rack mount rat not the pedal. Apart from that spot on mate 👏
Gareth Lewis Yep On the pickups I was told the correct ones (PAF pro’s for live and an old Gibson pickup for studio) but over the months my brain turned it into EMG’s. Haha. You are right about the 900 and rack rat but that was their live setup. In the studio on the older stuff it was definitely the 800. Thanks for watching Gareth!
Owen. In regards to the lull of subscribers, the band's you are choosing are not as popular as others. Try doing Pantera or Megadeth tone and you will probably see a huge bump in subscribers. In my humble opinion anyways.
something about LP style guitars with maple fretboards. look so damn good. Interesting that he used LPs in studio. It seems that in all the live stuff I've seen it's like jacksons and deans
Yep! I'm doing for two reasons. One, they sound a tiny bit brighter. Two, Canadian maple is the most regulated abundant fret board material out there. True Rose wood and Ebony are almist extinct. I don't want to be a part of the species being wiped off the planet for looks/tiny percentage of tone/feel.
Ehhh, I’ve seen Morbid Angel live many times in the past and I’ve personally never seen Trey (or whatever revolving door 2nd guitarist was with them at the time) use active pickups. It’s one of the things I really miss about old school death metal. Most of those bands had really simple rigs with passive pickups, a couple of pedals, and a JCM 800 or 900.. maybe a 5150 or 1st generation Dual Rec at the most. Honest, brutal tones. Unlike now where they’ve all got AxeFx’s or some ultra-saturated modern amp that does all the work for you.
I got my first Ibanez RG for Christmas when I was like 16. I had, only been playing for like a year and I remember how incredibly dead it sounded compared to my previous guitar, which was an Ibanez Roadstar from the early 80's. The Roadstar was a less "Ibanezy" guitar compared to the many variations of the RG model. I'm not an Ibanez hater per say, but the RG guitars sound absolutely lifeless. Unfortunately, most people that play Ibanez play an RG of some kind, especially in the heavy music world (yawn). I remember wondering if the giant cavity beneath the pick guard was the reason the guitar sounded so stale. Basically what I'm saying here, is that as a kid who had just started playing guitar, with no experience or credentials in music, even I was taken aback by the lifeless boring tone of Ibanez RGs.
Yep. I usually hate the tone of Ibanez players. People like Satch, Vai etc. but it helps speed/expression so it’s good for writing. Good post. When I was a teenager and would not know good tone if it slapped me but ignorance is bliss.
he use jcm900 pretty much since they came out not shure why cause there terrible jcm 800 for the win but ya trey alwas use a jcm 900 with a rat up front
don't think he touches EMGs, my friend.. even in the studio I've never seen an emg loaded guitar. in fact there was an old rant somewhere where he said pretty clearly he only uses passives. And he's said numerous times he uses the Dimarzio PAF pro. and the Dimarzio Blaze in the 7s. I'm sure there have been others. like during the early years he did at times use Gibson Vs with stock pickups and equipped with Floyd's. but only for a short time.. cool vid nonetheless..
You dont have subscribes.Reason is that what you show is to complexed for people who like me are using simple stuff, have one amp and no chance to get a tone you are getting. They rather like stuff which kiss their asses and keep them felling important.I lke you and your info.Could yo show how to get good tone using Bias Positive Grid?
Here is a vid for cheaper gear: ruclips.net/video/w0RaxBisdIs/видео.html friends dont let friends use VST amps. Kirk Hammet flipped burgers for years to buy his Gibson and Marshall. Find that friend with a basement, borrow that cab from the uncle, search craigslist for broken gear to fix up. Network to find guys willing to back your skill by sharing gear etc etc. Second guitarists in bands always have backup gear to share. If you are really passionate about guitar you can find a way to do this with real tubes. It’s cheaper than ever to get good gear. Good luck!
If the humour was lost on you, that's a waste of a good joke - but it's more of a shame that you thought I was having a genuine dig, and appear to have decided to stoop to the same level.
I'm going to try and offer some constructive criticism about the slow growth. I'm obviously nobody and my opinion is worth exactly how much you paid for it. I'm also not a content creator, just a subscriber :) Disclaimer: I think you have a fantastic ear and you really know your stuff. Your technical acumen is not in question. 1) Videos need to have a better sequence. You have a habit of mixing them up and they should at least follow a structure. 2) Show some excitement every now and then! You sometimes spend a non-trivial amount of time saying what you don't like-which is fine, but there are dosages for everything. 3) Don't ramble so much :). See #1. 4) Better preparation. Have a teleprompter or just some notes so you don't end up going back to think "what was that piece of gear" or anything like that. Also helps with sequence/rambling, helps making videos shorter and easier to watch. 5) Don't be afraid to cut and edit to make a video more easily digestible and/or doing more takes on specific bits if you have to. 6) Work on your video lettering/cuts/etc a little. It might be subliminal, but I strongly believe displaying pro-level work encourages people to follow a channel. 7) [ This could be an entire discussion on its own, and I'm aware it's a sensitive topic ] I know (or it sounds like) you think that only old-school analog gear is good and modern gear is terrible, but you don't need to repeat that so often. A lot of younger viewers in particular might just label you as old. You can say that the old stuff is great without bashing. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I do watch your channel, but I'll be the first to admit that it's not for everyone. Hopefully you can get something out of the crap I just wrote.
I'm trying to do a video every two days. It's gonna be rough. I agree with most of your issues. It's just...Not enough time in the day. If you watched the video the whole way through, you will know I'm sick so I'm not exactly mr positive right now.
BTW one thing I hate is forced positivity. I think my passion and enthusiasm is a good aspect of my vids because it’s real. I honestly think the metal scene is being RUINED by modern production. When people tell me to do VST’s etc because they can’t get $4000 worth of gear I tell them Kirk Hammet flipped burgers for years to get his Gibson/Marshall. I show them links to my vids where I recommend cheap tube amps that cost the same as spider amps. I encourage them to get involved in the local scene, borrow that uncles cab, search out likeminded people with a basement etc. Fuck VST’s and digital sims is my positive, vibrant, smiling message. Haha. Plus I’ll keep rambling. I like to go deeper than other channels. But I’m open to criticism. What parts do you think I was rambling about (that I didn’t point out myself re tangents etc). Did you notice the better video quality on the Bolt Thrower vid? I am trying. It’s a 4k camera. I just bought a lens that’s on its way. I introduced a new light on the Bolt Thrower vid and upgraded my software. There is the hexmas intros etc. I’m making incremental improvements. I bought a white board to keep me on track. I often forget to include mic placement etc. So I am trying. And keep the criticism coming because it really helps. I don’t get butthurt. It’s stupid to avoid advice.
Well, not that I disagree entirely, but "people are lowering their standards" isn't the same as "all modern gear sucks." But like I said, that issue alone is prickly and enough for pages upon pages of discussions :) FWIW I think it's easier than it's ever been to be a decent bedroom musician, save perhaps if you're a drummer. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
I am honestly mega stoked for this and have been checking my subscriptions regularly. Great stuff starting with Morbid!!
A happy Hex-Mass to you! I’m dreaming of a black, Hex-Mass.

Trey also uses a boss GE7 to boost the rat
Yep! That’s when he solos. An EQ acts like a boost. And when you add a rat (another boost) it becomes way too mushy for ryth but it screams for solos.
I run a GE7 with my tubezone to boost it up and its tightened up my sound.
Love the vid. One problem. Trey has used Marshall JCM 900 4100 models since day one, and still uses them with marshall cabinets. He also has a thing for PAF style pickups.
Whats the riff from 3:06 to 3:30?
* morbid angel looked cool & sexy AF 😅😅 and yes Trey is almost pathologically shy, but such an amazing person nonetheless. Analog is blood - blood IS LIFE! x
Nice!
Merry Hex-Mass!
Can someone please tell me this song? I want to learn it thanks.
anybody please? not even shazam works to help me.
guess not :'(
Fall from grace
I've seen him use the R2DU Rat rackmount live
I don't think the gear is quite right. Altars of Madness was recorded on a BC Rich international ironbird with a dimarzio x2n and he also used a Charvel Model 5FX live as well. On later albums he used PAF Pro's on the same guitar, a Hamer flying V, and an RG550 for leads. 7 string stuff was done on an ibanez UV7BK and RG7620, both with blazes. RAT used was a rack version.
I'm actually moving to Florida at some point and I would love to visit that storage unit, where is it?
Yeah man, I love Ibanez. I have three of them, they all play great.
Ibanez play great. Really fast/fluid. That’s not my problem with them ;-)
CIRCLE OF TONE. Swap out the pickups, you become super happy guy
YEAH!!!
Merry Hex Mass!!!
Great info! And yiiiissss. Carcass is coming.
What's the model of this Ibanez LP? Man, nice looking guitar!
that laugh its great
:-) merry Hex-Mass!!
You should do a heavy metal version of its every day bro, It might be torture for you but then you would be getting Jared Dines level views. I'll volunteer to do the England is my city part.
Treeforged Lol. I’m selling out via a different way. I’m going to do a PUBG guitar video once I have enough footage.
Nice video a shame the focus on the camera messed up. Chapel of ghouls is probably my favourite from morbid angel although I'm not a death metal guy really
Yeah I have no idea what my camera auto focused on. But with my face it’s a blessing.
is this the chinese greenback speaker or expensive heritage uk made reissue
This is circle of tone bitch. We don't mess around. 1969 celestion greenies baby!
@@CIRCLEOFTONEsorry i only want to know if you play the reissue that in the marshall 1960 ax cab
Nah they are original 1969 greenbacks. I was only joking.
Great video, but I thought Trey used JCM 900s.
Rivu Chowdhury They have used them later on live etc. Early on the classic stuff was JCM800.
CIRCLE OF TONE. Cool, thanks a lot and keep up the good work.
I always saw Trey with BC Rich guitars & was never far from that damn BOSS Flanger... LOL I heard the old DOD Death Metal pedal(not the Digitech version) was either used by Trey at some point or it was great for that tone.
can you please try do strapping young lad at some point? Merry Hex-Mass Eve
It’s a strange mix of frenzied and slurred. So it’s looser than most shredders but it’s a STYLE. So many faceless players out there.
oh an by the way who became winner of your guitariest contest
I’m extending it. I was going to announce it on Christmas Day but the video has so few views... The RUclips algorithm fucked me. It was going great until I did a live video and since then I’m lucky to get 2k views in a week.
my kind of countdown ....
Napalm Death is next :-)
Metal boy i love youuuu
Where is the mistletoe?
Hey great video . How do you get these backtracks? Do you create them or are they available online?
metalblades4 yeah I create most of them. Takes a long time.
CIRCLE OF TONE. Cool thanks
Best death metal band ever. Although Covenant is my favorite album, Domination has the best guitar tone for me!
YESSSSSSS!!!
Merry Hex Mass!
Acid001 Very cool. I’ll get to it eventually. Hex Mass is demanding! Haha.
i saw that show at the Long beach Arena, not much memory as i was drinking whisky.
I had to drive so I was completely sober. It was an awesome show!
Found it.. 😆
Yes ! i stopped listening after Covenant tho.
+CIRCLE OF TONE. to be fair, IDI is very bad. i knew that when i heard it.
Do a Burzum video!
Eisen Geist I may do that on its own. The backstory on that band is crazy.
It certainly deserves it's tone recreated by you. It is the most bizarre and unapologetic band to ever spawn from that dark corner of the world. :)
R Smith According to Varg, that was on Filosofem
Trey used a 900 not an 800. Only gibson I've seen him play is an explorer. Never seen him use actives. Rack mount rat not the pedal. Apart from that spot on mate 👏
Gareth Lewis Yep On the pickups I was told the correct ones (PAF pro’s for live and an old Gibson pickup for studio) but over the months my brain turned it into EMG’s. Haha. You are right about the 900 and rack rat but that was their live setup. In the studio on the older stuff it was definitely the 800. Thanks for watching Gareth!
Don't get why u dont like Ibanez :D
Played em my entire life in grind/death bands and they rule :D
Owen. In regards to the lull of subscribers, the band's you are choosing are not as popular as others. Try doing Pantera or Megadeth tone and you will probably see a huge bump in subscribers. In my humble opinion anyways.
Lol. True.
something about LP style guitars with maple fretboards. look so damn good.
Parsons Turbine yep I was given wrong Info. I blended a passive in with it too.
CIRCLE OF TONE. No big deal, still sounded like a great, classic extreme metal tone.
Fuck yes PUBG lol
I’m going to be doing a Pub G based video in the future. Haha.
👍👍👀
Good post. When I was a teenager and would not know good tone if it slapped me but ignorance is bliss.
shame this is slightly out of focus
he use jcm900 pretty much since they came out not shure why cause there terrible jcm 800 for the win but ya trey alwas use a jcm 900 with a rat up front
Consider Paul Kossoff.
One of my past failures was the Kossov tone. The main pickup I'm developing is aimed at that tone. Perhaps I'll attempt it to launch my pickup series?
Nice. Utilising the open chord using a Gibson? He translated a pain and anguish so much through the vehicle of his guitar. Keep up the good work x
jaymchay Yep he was a god. Some of the best live/video Tone I’ve seen.
don't think he touches EMGs, my friend.. even in the studio I've never seen an emg loaded guitar. in fact there was an old rant somewhere where he said pretty clearly he only uses passives.
Good Info. Looks like I was told the wrong info for the pickup.
CIRCLE OF TONE. My, my, you're one touchy soul.
Back when Trey played guitar solos, instead of wammy-wah "soundscapes" that all sound the same.
