Just got confirmation from Mitch that is was a MKIV and the RAT pedal so that's cool. Later on he used a boss turbo distortion then just a straight up recto. Thanks to the Napalm Death facebook group: facebook.com/groups/157867557593854/
I'd love to know the guitar and bass tone to Terrorizer: World Downfall. That's a mean grinder of an album. My guess is a Rat into a JCM800 2203 and the bass is a gain-cranked Ampeg with some boost and/or compression. Hopefully someone could reveal the secret of that album. Even more fascinating is the album was recorded and mixed in about 8 hours. I know that was recorded around the same time Altars of Madness was recorded;
Waiting for this one! I wonder if you could experiment with the mic selection or position a bit? The album seems to have more room tone in it, like a condenser back off from the cab a decent amount?
Yep good points. I tried that. I even took the back off my cab for micing the back in a big room and not my booth. With the amps I had I was just not getting close freq wise. Plus my pickup is too tight. I threw in the towel and went all fredman technique on its ass. I tried in the past too and failed.
I'd love for you to talk about the importance of the Ampeg solid state series of amps a lot of the brutal bands were using, specifically Suffocation. The Ampeg VH and SS series in particular are devastating.
Just wanna say i recently treated myself to a set of Circle of Tone pickups for my BC Rich Bich... and they are fucking amazeballs! put them on a blend pot and i'm effortlessly getting some of the best clean and distorted tones i've ever gotten from any pickup in 20 years of playing guitar. I have different seymour duncans in all my guitars (except this one), so i've tried a lot of pickups. I would say these are the perfect thrash metal pickup. the clarity and musiciality of these pickups is just phenomenally impressive! Thanks OWEN!!!!! and for those that care, they arrived in Denver super quick. less than a week. for a base reference my favorite duncan pickups are the Distortion and Invader. and i play a lot of Megadeth, In Flames, and Alice in Chains style riffage.
Eh, do you like Demolition Hammer? I know they did "Tortured Existence" at Morrisound. The drums sounded almost identical to what was on "Harmony Corruption". The somewhat thin/muddy guitar tone too.
Great video brother and I couldn’t agree more about re-thinking what Gear I think is good and what is not good !!! In the last year, I’ve tracked a bunch of guitar, and it’s been really amazing to see how different you can make something sound just by moving the mics 4 inches off the cab, and swapping out different types of mics that maybe aren’t the normal go to mics !!! And of course as you said, the difference a great player can make as opposed to someone who is not !!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Just a follow up point. I have no particular love of Napalm Death, but it’s funny how you thought the DS1 sounded like shit, and all these other issues in that section, yet I thought it sounded fine. I think the DS-1 tone you did was closer to the harmony corruption than anything. I’m not a fan of that, but the Inside town apart tone was great. I saw them live in 97’ in Cleveland, Ohio and both Jesse and Mitch both used blackface duel recs, maybe triples with the recto cabs, and both of them had emgs (81s I assume) in their guitars. I’m not sure about boost pedals, but regardless- it sounded fucking great.
I don't know much but Napalm Death lived in my town for a while (Wallasey) as I think Bill Steer was too young to move to Brum, so everyone moved here. I think you can see the Napalm House in the BBC's "Heavy Metal Heaven" from the 80s!

One of the best grind/death metal albums ever- Mick Harris drumming is unbelievable on this album. Bass drum has that famous click sound from that era, Scott Burns must have triggered a sample from Mick’s live bass drum and blended it into the mix as it has the exact same sound as other albums he produced. For fuck sake Matt Pike HIGH ON FIRE Tone please!!!!!!! I think this is my 100th request
The rat is probably what Shawn and Jesse used, but when I saw them in 91,Mitch was only using the dirty channel on his old ass Marshall. No pedals except for channel switch pedal.
i wanna call my sound apple core
Vanilla sausage lol. My first band was called Toilet slave .
So romantic.
Nice to see you, Owen, on St. Nikolaus eve, where nasty children not only get a piece of coal instead of chocolate, but also get stuffed into a sack and are carried to St. Nikolaus House, where they have to work all day.
The good children on the other hand get chocolate. And maybe some oranges, gingerbread and walnuts.
You deserve chocolate. Because you have been a good boy all year.
Lol. I'm on Keto diet so chocolate would be a sin.
Is it time for CoT to jump on the Band Maid wagon of domination?
I can match the outfits for sure.
Bodom early era
Rat pedal huh?
Do morbid angel covenant/domination era.
Grind father's = Repulsion

Looking forward to necrophagist, I love engl amps and know Muhammad used them.
He is an INSANE player
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Like mozart for death metal
The constant belittling of modern metal from this damn boomer is so offputing i barely can finish the videos.
Fuck modern metal. My previous job was a software test tech and most of my vids talk about bleeding edge recording methods. Plus saying Boomer is so last year. Please get a more modern putdown.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE I'll find another term if it suits you better, but no term suits you better than boomer. You can't do even one video without complaining about modern metal, you are the dictionary definition of a boomer
17 Chapman fans dislike this video, lol
Harmony Corruption has the worst production quality of all time; muted, muggy, fuzzy, it sounds like it was recorded in a basement on a 4 track not at Morrisound, oh, for it to have been recorded at Slaughterhouse instead, where Mentally Murdered was recorded, and that is a perfect slice of unbeatable perfect grindcore, Harmony Corruption is shit...
