    Just got confirmation from Mitch that is was a MKIV and the RAT pedal so that's cool. Later on he used a boss turbo distortion then just a straight up recto. Thanks to the Napalm Death facebook group: facebook.com/groups/157867557593854/

    I'd love to know the guitar and bass tone to Terrorizer: World Downfall. That's a mean grinder of an album. My guess is a Rat into a JCM800 2203 and the bass is a gain-cranked Ampeg with some boost and/or compression. Hopefully someone could reveal the secret of that album. Even more fascinating is the album was recorded and mixed in about 8 hours. I know that was recorded around the same time Altars of Madness was recorded;

    Waiting for this one! I wonder if you could experiment with the mic selection or position a bit? The album seems to have more room tone in it, like a condenser back off from the cab a decent amount?

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  5 лет назад +6

      Yep good points. I tried that. I even took the back off my cab for micing the back in a big room and not my booth. With the amps I had I was just not getting close freq wise. Plus my pickup is too tight. I threw in the towel and went all fredman technique on its ass. I tried in the past too and failed.

    Just wanna say i recently treated myself to a set of Circle of Tone pickups for my BC Rich Bich... and they are fucking amazeballs! put them on a blend pot and i'm effortlessly getting some of the best clean and distorted tones i've ever gotten from any pickup in 20 years of playing guitar. I have different seymour duncans in all my guitars (except this one), so i've tried a lot of pickups. I would say these are the perfect thrash metal pickup. the clarity and musiciality of these pickups is just phenomenally impressive! Thanks OWEN!!!!! and for those that care, they arrived in Denver super quick. less than a week.
    for a base reference my favorite duncan pickups are the Distortion and Invader. and i play a lot of Megadeth, In Flames, and Alice in Chains style riffage.

    Great video brother and I couldn’t agree more about re-thinking what Gear I think is good and what is not good !!! In the last year, I’ve tracked a bunch of guitar, and it’s been really amazing to see how different you can make something sound just by moving the mics 4 inches off the cab, and swapping out different types of mics that maybe aren’t the normal go to mics !!! And of course as you said, the difference a great player can make as opposed to someone who is not !!🤘🏻🤘🏻

      Just a follow up point. I have no particular love of Napalm Death, but it’s funny how you thought the DS1 sounded like shit, and all these other issues in that section, yet I thought it sounded fine. If you aren’t wedded to a sound, then it is so much easier to be productive. I had a Triaxis etc. I’m really enjoying a Line6 Shuriken with the stock Helix 5150 patch these days. If you can control your sound, so much can sound good, and I actually liked the ‘bad’ versions. Why not? Napalm Death was never supposed to be listenable LOL 😂

    I think the DS-1 tone you did was closer to the harmony corruption than anything. I’m not a fan of that, but the Inside town apart tone was great. I saw them live in 97’ in Cleveland, Ohio and both Jesse and Mitch both used blackface duel recs, maybe triples with the recto cabs, and both of them had emgs (81s I assume) in their guitars. I’m not sure about boost pedals, but regardless- it sounded fucking great.

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  5 лет назад +2

      I half suspect they used that or a metalzone. The metalzone got closer than the DS1 but the recto was just way off in general.

    It's those damn drums. I swear, Morrisound drums are IMPOSSIBLE to re-create and that's why I love them. Fun fact: Iced Earth recorded a majority of their 90's work at Morrisound and were close friends with Nocturnus and Death. Power metal that sounded a bit "death metally" at times. The drums for "Burnt Offerings" were a nightmare to work with according to Tom Morris. Jon Schaffer HATES the original production and other things of them album and that's why we got those remasters. I for one, love the original. I would love to see a video for "Night of the Stormrider" or "Burnt Offerings" era.

    Oooh this brings back memories. First time I saw ND was at Adam & Eve's in Leeds about '87 maybe? Then saw them maybe year after at Queens Hall in Bradford but both of those gigs were the 'FETO' line up and the moshpits back then were just insane! Loved it! I kinda 'got' why they ended up doing Harmony Corruption as suddenly the UK hardcore scene exploded with plenty of ND and Carcass clones materialising seemingly out of nowhere (some good but many just awful) but it's personally my least fave ND era (although I still like it and this vid oc course) as the whole Morrisound / Scott Burns thing just seemed - to me and HUGE amount of fans at the time - a step too far really. It was with the processed drums, death metal vocals and super-scooped guitar tone too - I can't think of a better word - tame. I really like the stuff they've done after The Code Is Red onwards especially Apex Predator but - and I guess its cos I was wide eyed teen back then - nothing will ever beat the absolute lunacy of the Dorian/Steer/Embury/Harris live chaos!

    Great video, as always, Owen. Im a little curious to know if youve played a proper MKIV or MK amp. I have a MKIV Rev A and the range on it is insane. It may not be a straight plug and play, but it can sound like a Fender, Marshall, and my favorite, The MKIIC+. I also loved Pete Loeflers tone growing up and it was big inspiration to buy one.

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  5 лет назад +1

      Yep I've owned MK amps. My fav was the mkiii purple stripe. The mkiii had better tone for my style but live they got complaints that the best clean and distortion were not switchable live due to the shared eq etc.
      So IMO while the Mkiv was more functional live, it lost the vibe and warmth of the previous model. IMO the more options inside an amp, the more it suffers tonally.

      A lot of bass players have a bad habit of picking and clanking against the pickups. Often pushing the strings onto the pickup which produces a pop etc. Picking closer to the bridge also results in more audible string scrape on the strings.

      BTW if I need more defenition I pick closer to the bridge.

    A CRATE Les Paul? Where in the hell did you acquire that beast? As far as I knew, CRATE only made some junk guitars.. Can we have some more info on that LP?

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE

      It's a colab Crate did with Electra. Electra had roots in Japan and made great guitars. I have about 5 to use for different pickups etc. I upgrade tuners, nut and electronics. They are my brand pickups.

    Nice to see you, Owen, on St. Nikolaus eve, where nasty children not only get a piece of coal instead of chocolate, but also get stuffed into a sack and are carried to St. Nikolaus House, where they have to work all day.
    The good children on the other hand get chocolate. And maybe some oranges, gingerbread and walnuts.
    You deserve chocolate. Because you have been a good boy all year.

    Harmony Corruption has the worst production quality of all time; muted, muggy, fuzzy, it sounds like it was recorded in a basement on a 4 track not at Morrisound, oh, for it to have been recorded at Slaughterhouse instead, where Mentally Murdered was recorded, and that is a perfect slice of unbeatable perfect grindcore, Harmony Corruption is shit...
