The PERFECT Speedrun (Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels)

- Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is one of the hardest Mario games, and the warpless category is in my opinion the best 2D Mario speedrun. The World Record already does tons of crazy tricks and strategies... but so much more is possible. This is what perfection looks like.

most insane part about this to me is that you're still 30 seconds off the tas with this run
this run: 34:54
tas: 34:25
oh yeah i forgot to mention it. It's crazy lol
Crazy
Insane
Ridiculous
I cant believe he didn’t eat pizza during this
That synced perfectly with the music: 11:35
100% Intended lol
I cant stop watching this.
It’s so CLEAN!
you just have to respect the fact that an Italian toilet mechanic can move at these speeds
yeah, I know I said toilet mechanic
You mean Italian Chris Pratt toilet engineer right?
It is canon, due to Super Mario 2, that Mario in his dreams moves slower and jumps much shorter than his brother Luigi.
SJADJASJDAJSDJAS
Even the mighty 7-4 stood no chance in this run. Shoutouts to all FOUR wall clips
For real. That took integrity and perseverance to get through.
Fake run, cannot believe you would do this to us Kosmic. Liked and subscribed
Ngl it is fake
🤞
Right? Where's the pizza & coke???
@@AkumaAPN I had my fingers crossed

11 hours of hard work...
...on one level!
GG on the final product. It was fun to watch!
This is SUCH a cool project. It really helps to underscore just how much effort it takes to be able to land all of these, AND how one hard level in the middle makes it vastly more difficult / unlikely for someone to get that as WELL as everything afterwards in a single run.
Fantastic work!!
perfect, ya say? ooh, i’ll make sure to watch. i’m *really* interested now
I'm honored to be the only one to witness the end on 7-4 live.
hi gtace
GGTAce
So only one viewer was at the end?
At the start of A-1 when you kick the shell behind you while still moving forward was probably the sickest thing ive ever seen
It was awesome watching you perfect these runs. You put in a TON of effort! It was an honor.
17:08 shout out to that bullet bill that appears for a single frame before deciding to peace out
30:59 you’re more than the human TAS. You’re clutch gamer
I love watching old vids like this and laughing at what seemed impossible and ended up getting crushed
gg Kosmic!
I was on stream for about 10 hours of your journey. That was fun to watch. See you on stream!
Seeing that 7-4 gave me so much satisfaction because I caught a stream of you doing it and it looked sooooo hard
Kosmic this run can’t be world record, it’s spliced!!! What a blunder!!!
Bismuth feels good being mentioned many times :P
Was funny seeing all of your record splits, just to know what you'd be close to in a perfect non-edited run.
Then i can't wait for new strats and you getting better yourself.
Too bad i can't watch streams on this computer.
That jump in 3-4.
I was a dumb kid and never checked for invisible blocks underneath, I just played the level over and over again until I made the damn jump. It took ages to beat that level the first time. Probably not the 11 hours you spent in 7-4 though, lol.
And then once you do get past it and confirm it's possible, it looks like intended route.
This is a great video man. I like that you're showing what's possible, you're like a human TAS. That 7-4 Bowser kill was insane!
I'm both glad and sad to see this project is complete. I enjoyed the vibes at the end - "world record is there for anyone who wants it." I hope enough people can appreciate the value of this work. It doesn't fit in any category and didn't need to be put together at all but it was made anyway. None of this was done by a machine - there's proof right here that time can be saved with just some of these executed. Good luck out there with the runs, folks!
7:28 that looked sick bro
34:xx best possible time: *exists*
Niftski: *and I took that personally*
“I swear I will actually make a tutorial soon” It’s been almost an year and I’m still waiting
What a masterclass. Would love this type of video on any game
15:30 The goomba statues in the background remind me of the splits
Thank you Kosmic, very cool!
Kosmic: Double frame perfect
Me: Frame Perfect squared
Great video as always Kosmic. Love this kinda stuff!
“If you don’t know what a frame rule is go watch a bismuth video”
*angry summoning salt noises*
Kosmic: says it's a spliced run
Me: [confused screaming]
This reminded me of 'Men who stare at goats'. With enough training and mental fortitude you can actually go through walls. Need to be on the right subpixel though...gg
This is incredible in my opinion you're way better and more entertaining than a tas
Why doesn't he have pizza and coke if this a fake speedrun? Jokes aside, well done Kosmic yet another great video : )
Because pizza and coke are used for real speedruns
11:35 perfectly synced
Really awesome video Kosmic!!!
You should make an effort to bring more people into speed running this game. Greatest Mario game of all time in my opinion
This was really cool, thanks for the effort you put in :)
I didn't know livesplit could track best pace ever. that's actually really useful!
i can't believe kosmic spliced a run
I know he always brags about bieng a gamer but seems like the only thing that got played was his audience.
Insane how much time that you have to save in this game, like, theoretically you could die and still pb which is crazy
Your videos are always fun, and you're always positive! Thank you! Did the commentary video make its way to RUclips?
No pizza or coke? Spliced!
Soo many hrs, so much work went into this. Well done kosmic 👌
are there single world-sections ( I'm not sure what those are usually called ) speedruns that can be done where you would try to implement some of these really tough strats into?
Like a world 7 speedrun where the perfect springs in 7-3 would be implemented in addition to the crazy clips in the 7-4 castle.
They'd be called ILs, or individual levels.
That 2-2 wall jump is just nasty!!!
This is crazy dude
I still congratulate u for 4:55 and 18:59
Edit:y do u shoot fireballs after hitting the flagpole
Edit:I knew about the crouch swim
Love the channel.... With the amount of time you spent saying that you didn't have time to explain everything I think you could have explained some stuff lol I'm new to all this timing and speed running... what is the name of the program you're using to time your runs? Is there a video explaining all that for newbies?
Great work kosmic!
It blows my mind that wall clips and flagpole glitches are still possible on a next generation console and complete remake of the game. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what enables these glitches, but I would've guessed that hardware and programming differences would've fixed them. Apparently they left the physics untouched?
Aw, man I love me some Super Mario All Stars… I need that Video Game in my life…🏆📌
There is a soft lock doing bulletbill glitch or fullflagpole glitch is because in the nes version it’s touching a block but in all stars it doesn’t work like that, idk how it works but in nes u just touch a block to trigger the timer counting down but with all stars it doesn’t work like that
8:17 That's kinda trippy lol
Could you have done a fast accel in 7-3 to save a framerule, as you were remainder J (remainder 19) and fast accel saves two frames?
36:53 this would be so cool! I’ve wanted to run this category for a while but it just seems so daunting. A tutorial would really help.
After all these years it dons on me how well mario holds his breath underwater pretty good for a fat guy lol!
I don't have patience to watch or know if you've addressed it - are you playing brick fix or native cart?
How do you avoid the 'broken' physics with blocks compared to the NES version?
I have to keep reminding myself that this isn't a TAS. Jeeeeeeeez
I can only imagine how many hours this took to record, edit, and render, really good video.
WR MARIO SPEEDRUNNING LEGEND *ADMITS* HE SPLICED A RUN!!!
10:55 - The timer - OOOF
4:09 You watch bismuth?
8:23 Oh I get it cos the toads are present
14:15 Actually you can simply jump into any block to the right of an invisible block and get in without slowdown. Like at the end of SMB1 5-1 at the 1UP block
That is not how it works on the All Stars version
@@Kosmicd12 Oh i see, thanks!
This is so sick!!
Is there not a way you can break the flag at the end? So instead of sliding down it you can somehow jump through it and the victory music immediately plays and Mario just walks into the house.
Such a good video! Very well done.
Has anyone ever made a “human theory TAS”?
I'm not a speedrunner, but I know my way around DaVinci Resolve. Kosmic said it and mentioned the scewed sound it would make, and the black frames were visible. I also saw Carl Jobsts take on that.
But I really wonder if it would be so hard to make a spliced speedrun that would be almost impossible to find out.
Shure the many hundred takes, those twitch streamers do, wouldn't be great for such a forge, cuz they do it all live.
I'm pretty shure, if someone took the efford, you could forge a pretty impossible to detect speedrun of any Mario game.
Am I wrong?
The closest D-4 will ever be to perfect...
Talking about splits and frames without a single bowling ball in sight.
love the SNES graphics...
Whats the difference between this game and the lost levels with the original smb graphics?
Might I suggest NRG has a lost levels challenge?
ruclips.net/video/TuZGJcjxTgo/видео.html
@@Kosmicd12 I'm just dumb. I've even watched the video.
During this run, he talked about frame perfect. So imagine a bus...
The Super Mario Bros games are so weird for speedruns. Thanks to the frame rules, there are a lot of optimizations that let you beat a level faster, but don't actually affect the overall time.
"The closest D-4 warpless will ever be to perfect", right? 😉
nice reference dude
How many non-gliched worlds are actually in smb2j?
12.
You can save even more time with the forbidden pizza/coke strat
i love your vids
I know it's like almost frame perfect but could you do regular fpg in world 9 levels? (not full fpg because softlock)
edit: he does in 9-4
also why no pipe cutscene in a-2 does that always happen?
You might be able to go through the firebars in 6-4 and D-4 using a specific setup
The *499 subs* the entire time was… _unsatisfying_ lol
Kosmic, have you got a video explaining how SMAS SMB2J is different from NES?
I thought flagpole glitch softlocked the game on SMA version of 1 and 2j, unless I'm thinking about bullet bill glitch
Yeah you softlock if Mario doesn't reach the castle
Why is everyone saying it’s a fake speedrun…. He just forgot the Coke
And he said he sliced a pizza
Kosmic admits to splicing runs! Rage videos when?
Is this combination of segments possible? Any frame rule irregularities to consider?
youd have to do some manipulation for a couple podoboos, a firebar, and a bowser or two.
One of the early levels and 7-3 showed R=J is that frame rule really not doable? it's sooo close... Maybe FPG is worth it there in the context of a spliced run?
You could do it with fast accels
Not familiar with lost level based on what you were saying, it’s mechanically identical to Super mario bros?
Badabun: _our battle will be legendary_
Which game do you think is better to speed run Mario lost levels or Super Mario Bros 2 Japanese version?
2j for every category except warpless d-4, which is better on all stars

Why are the Mario 54s so powerful?
For those who don't know, a framerule is a bus that's being driven by Summoningsalt and measures SMB world records. I think 🤔.
