Thank you for this video. Excellent content...very useful and extremely helpful. I will be setting up my home theater soon and will most definitely use this video for reference. I have the Fluance Signature Series. My setup is the center channel, bookshelfs for fronts and side surrounds, and bipolars for back surrounds. My subs are dual B.I.C. Acoustech PL-200 II. My AVR is the Yamaha Aventage RX-A1060. Anyone have any recommendations as guidance for crossover settings relative to the home theater setup that I currently have?

Before when I had my 8-inch Sony sub, setting my fronts to large really added thump for music because that's the only channels that don't cut off the subwoofers when set to large. Then when the Klipsch R-112SW came and replaced the Sony, the extra thump my towers gave barely makes a difference to how good the sub already was. Everything is at 80 Hz now. I found that when you have a REAL subwoofer, ALL your speakers must be at small no matter what!

Having a mic definitely helps but it's up to your ears. You want to play with all the settings your app has until you reach a point that you're happy with. If you want more punch maybe raise your crossover so your sub plays a little higher.

I think setting the crossover about 40hz higher than whatever the speaker's lowest rated frequency is, sounds the best. I've been doing it this way for many years and it has always made my speaker's sound fantastic. I disagree with setting bookshelf speakers at 100hz...you should go by their actual ratings and setting all those speaker's to 100hz will likely mean you won't get a lot of that important mid range sounds out of the speakers. 80hz is the way to go if you aren't sure what frequency to use. It's also the THX standard for crossover frequency.

All that's well and good except you end up with a big gap for under utilizing your main tower speakers low range. Fortunately, some receivers do allow for LFE + mains so that compromise is better reduced, and you still get to experience the added bass from your main speakers. Or at least more of it.

When it comes to music listening vs movie , for me it's a different taste. For music since I have polk t50 stereo with sub is my preference. Now don't get me wrong just the two polk's sound great. But certain speakers have that power of the subs but there are some that don't have that drop like a sub to some songs.now for music listening crossover set.for me is fronts 100hz subs 3 set to 120hz . So I don't get to much bass (bass head) but not to much it about clarity. Movie I set all lower speakers to 80hz , and subs to 120hz . Sounds great for my taste. It's your preference of sound not mine or anyone elses. Others may differ on preference it's just ideas . Happy listening.

The lower the 'hz' number the lower the bass. Setting your crossover to 80 means anything under that number starts to diminish or disappear. If you don't have a sub you either need to set your front speakers full range or to 40hz to bring back the bass until you get a subwoofer

Subwoofer trim isn't overall Subwoofer volume. It takes bass from the front speakers and overlaps it with the Subwoofer. I always keep my Subwoofer trim at 0 or off. 75db is a good balance between Subwoofer and the rest of the system but if you like a little more I'd add 3 or 5 more db to the Subwoofer. 84db is a little high. If you need more slam I recommend going into the svs app and turning up the frequencies you want more of instead of the entire sub overall

Very informative video! Maybe you can answer my crossover quandary which no one else on RUclips will. I have a 2012 Yamaha RX-V373 Dolby 5.1 receiver with 85 watts per channel. I’m happy with my new 5.0 setup with no subwoofer. My Klipsch R 620 F loudspeakers are rated 38Hz - 21kHz. My wall mounted side speakers are Jamo S 803s rated: 57 Hz - 26 kHz. My Jamo S 81 CEN center channel speaker is rated: 71Hz - 26 kHz. The receiver only has a single crossover setting for all speakers. 60Hz seems more bassy than 80Hz for the crossover setting. My only concern is that 60Hz may be too much over time for the 71Hz center speaker. If it is a valid concern I could set the crossover to 80Hz for longevity’s sake with slightly less bass. My center speaker set to small and the rest set to large for maximum bass without a sub and they sound great to me. Great video! Thanks, if you would please answer my questions and concerns with your expert knowledge!

    • @Kpaceguy

Everything needs to be set to small and set the front speakers down to 40. You'll still get bass under 40 but it'll roll off so it'll protect everything. 60hz is only too much if the volume is excessive. The lower the bass the more power you need to reproduce it. Asking your speakers to play to low adds strain on the speaker and demands a lot fun the receiver and receivers can't deliver the full "85 watts" to all speakers at once.

I appreciate your vids on these home theater topics, I’ve been binge watching a ton of them as I prepare to setup my first 5.1.2 system. However, from what I understand there’s a difference in the LFE channel you mentioned in this video. The crossover settings are completely separate from the LFE track which is a unique channel in Dolby content that directs specific audio to the subwoofer and can range up to 120 Hz. The crossover settings will send bass from the other speakers to the subwoofer in addition to the LFE signals that will always be directed to the subs. I don’t think the crossover point need to be any higher to account for LFE as it is always sent to the subwoofer regardless of crossover settings.

Audyssey is setting my speaker crossovers at real high crossover levels. I have a Marantz SR8012 AVR. Two HSU VFT-3 MK5 subs, subs are good set at LFE 120hz. All speakers set to small. I ran Audyssey several times and they have all been set differently every time, but always higher or equal to 150hz. I have two DefTech BP9060 powered towers that Audyssey set at 200hz, tested powered and unpowered. One DefTech CS9060 center speaker and Audyssey set that at 150hz, tested powered and unpowered. Two DefTech ProMonitor 1000 side surrounds and Audyssey set them at 110hz. Two DefTech ProMonitor 1000 back surrounds and Audessey set them at 150hz. All of the crossovers seem way to high imo. Do you recommend still lowering the crossovers to 80hz? I have heard that it’s ok to raise crossover levels, but it’s not really recommended to lower crossover levels, because you will loose that correction that Audyssey made in between the 200hz-80hz. I can’t find any info of anyone having this issue with crossovers set so high, usually the crossovers are set to 40hz-60hz when auto room correction is done, then raise them manually to 80hz. My other problem is I have no idea how to set up the EQ manually if I turn Audyssey off🤦🏻‍♂️. Any ideas!
    Help please lol. 👍🏻👍🏻

Some of this advice is good, but some of it doesn't make technical sense.
LFE - if you are plugging in your sub to the LFE input, then the AV receiver will send all LFE signals up to 120hz to the sub if the source material has a point 1 track like a 5.1 or 7.1. That channel is purely for the sub and is 3-120hz and the sub should be set to the LFE setting.
This then takes the home theater crossover balance out of a lot of the discussion as its done.
The next thing to know is that the crossover isn't a brick wall, where below that point it stops frequencies dead, it's a slope which rolls off sound. That means the speakers and sub will still play frequencies above and below that crossover point. That in turn means that large capable full range speakers should still be crossed over decently high as no matter how capable the speakers are at playing bass, the sub is better. Secondly and perhaps most importantly, bass energy is the most demanding for the amp to produce so why create this demand on your multi channel receiver, which realistically won't put out the quoted RMS power when all the speakers are driven, so it will be strained power that takes away from the mods and highs power, which it doesn't need to do. If you let the dedicated, powerful sub amp do this, the AV amp doesn't have to struggle to provide bass energy so can provide cleaner easier to power for the mids and highs improving the center image and clarity.
If you can run a room eq program, optimizing the sub positioning works wonders as does making sure the delays/distances are right. If that is optimized, don't waste energy setting the crossovers too low. A frequency sweep will help to ensure the output is even.

Until you get a subwoofer I dont think you'll be satisfied the way you want to be. The crossover for the speakers you have would sound best at 80hz and then let your sub take over. So that muddy sound is from your speakers not able to accurately play low bass. So until you pair them with a sub, they will struggle

Why do you have your crossover set so high (100hz) on your main left and right? Surely your mains can handle the lower frequency! I have klipsch towers and when set at 80hz they are restricted so I set them at 60 hz and they have opened up alot ! Because the Bass sounds smoother and pronounced when it comes from the sub. The speakers still play 100hz, 90hz, 80hz it just rolls off a few db every octave. AFAIK the speakers should not have a difference of more than 20 Hz between them. That means if one speaker has a cutover frequency set to 80 Hz, there should not be any other speaker set to less than 60 Hz or more than 100 Hz cutover frequency. Cheesr.

    • @viennacalling85
      @viennacalling85 4 года назад

@@Turtleback8024 I presume the 120 Hz is the LPF of your subwoofer and not the cutover frequency. That means the subwoofer will be activated below 120 Hz. The cutover of the speakers, however, means that the speakers will not get any sound below the cutover frequency and those will be handed over to your subwoofer. In your case for the frequency range between 80 to 120 Hz, both your mains and subs are activated. However, when the frequency falls below 80 Hz the mains cut off but the subwoofer keeps booming. On the other side, when the sound goes above 120 Hz your subwoofer shuts down but the mains keep kicking up to the frequency they are capable of handling. And about the 20 Hz cutover difference, for example, if you happened to have another two surround speakers you should put the cutover between 60-100 Hz. That means it could be 60, 80, 100, etc as you have the mains cutting off at 80 Hz. I hope, I could explain well.

You have to adjust for that. Let's day you have floor standing speakers or good size bookshelves that do 37hz in room response. You wouldn't want to starve your speaker of its performance right? Maybe your subs have a bad peak frequency at around 70 or 80 hz and you want to tame it. You could lower your subs crossover to maybe 50 or 60hz and lower your speaker to that same frequency and let them play 50 to 60hz because it's not as loud or boom potentially. Assuming you have speakers that can play that low. There's many circumstances that make 80hz a point of reference, but not necessarily final
