    HEY GRANT! I'm surprised you don't use tempered/heat resistant glass jars for your experiments. You still have to warm them up before such types of use (about 10 minutes in a toaster oven at 300F), but they are much less prone to shattering in high heat. And we get to see more of the reactions going on, under the surface.

    • @sirshotty7689
      @sirshotty7689 7 лет назад +1

      Plus if you ever need to temper a blade you can also use a toaster oven for that... Well at least I do

    • @ShamrockUSA
      @ShamrockUSA 7 лет назад

      Doramius this stuff will still crack it

    • @Doramius
      @Doramius 7 лет назад +3

      You have to heat tempered glass, still. I've poured molten aluminum into tempered glass without cracking it, on several occasions, but you must heat the glass. Using a toaster oven set at 300 degrees, 10-15 minutes will bring the glass to a fairly appropriate temperature to prevent cracking. Note that bringing the glass to temperatures around 900F-1000F for an extended period of time, the glass will start to glow. 1200F and glass can start to be molded. 1300F and you'll start into molten glass.

    • @ShamrockUSA
      @ShamrockUSA 7 лет назад

      Doramius is molten aluminum several thousand degrees Celsius. no

    • @Doramius
      @Doramius 7 лет назад +2

      I'm not trying to institute a reply war. But what is being heated at several thousand degrees Celsius? Potassium Chlorate's melting point is 650F. Bringing glass up to about 500F will handle molten aluminum without cracking. The aluminum will bring the glass temp up, but not drastic enough to cause the glass to shatter. The glass should also not be placed on a cool surface.

      I just did a bit of research, and my mistake, you are correct. Outside of the US, borosilicate glass is used, where the US market uses tempered soda-lime glass. Honestly not surprised that the US uses the cheaper materials to keep cost down, rather than use something that is stronger and will last longer.

    Hey Grant, in the future, you can help reduce the effects of thermal shock by "preheating" your glass - stick the glass in the oven and then turn it on to it's highest temperature. The glass will heat up slowly as the oven heats up and when you pour a hot liquid into it, the glass will be less likely to shatter

    I've heard that if you put a metal object in the glass container like a spoon before pouring in the hot liquid, the metal will obsorb most of the heat and ultimately not break the glass. Not sure if this true, but worth a shot.

    Grant, you should make your own potassium chlorate by electrolysis of potassium chloride. Under a high current, the potassium hypochlorite produced disproportionates into potassium chloride and potassium chlorate because of the heat. If done in a saturated solution, the low solubility of potassium chlorate will cause it to precipitate out as it forms in the reaction.

      Like ADHIRAJ OBEROI said, deoxygenated blood doesn't turn blue, it's the adipose tissue (fat) that turns blue. Deoxygenated blood does turn to a darker, almost black, red, instead of the bright red that we're all used to (oxygenated blood).

    • @SuperSmith
      @SuperSmith 7 лет назад +4

      It's not fat that turns it blue (there is little subcutaneous fat on the underside of the distal end of your forearm for example). It's the same reason why the ocean appears blue, blue light is at the higher energy end of the spectrum along with indigo and purple. With its higher energy blue light can penetrate the skin and still be reflected back out. It has nothing to do with fat specifically, rather the energies associated with the different wavelengths of visible light.

    Glass doesn't melt until 1400C/2552F, so you should be able to warm up the glass with the torch before you introduce the KClO3. Decrease the temperature difference, and it shouldn't break.
    You could even heat it in the furnace with KClO3 in the glass already and warm them together. No shock, and the KClO3 will melt at 356F, long before the glass even gets weak. It'll take longer, but you'll get better results.

    Hey Grant , I think a better glass container to use would be an erlenmeyer flask as they are commonly used in chemical labs and should be able to hold up better when heating up from chemical reactions. :)
