So to get a higher collar roll, you need to bring the shoulder points over each more. You're effectively displacing the space where the collar can 'sit' so that it is fried upwards. So if you opened up the shoulders of the front and back bodice, you're introducing more space, so more fabric, and this would have the effect of creating more volume, but it would still sit relatively flat on the shoulder, it would just have more lower volume. Does that make sense?
