In this video, I'm taking you through the construction process of making a DIY tool roll using my sewing pattern (which you can grab from my online shop) and at the end, show you how I store art supplies and sewing tools, and how I use the belt version ...

When adding 1cm or more for c-d cups, do I add the parallel right of the line? You didn't say so explicitly, but I just wanted to be sure before I assumed incorrectly.
This is Easy!? Jesus...Ive no hope.
Notch tool..why do you need one?
@@robinmott1232 if you’re just someone hobbying you probably don’t. But I wouldn’t be without mine. I use it to mark in notches on all pattern. The notches it creates are consistent in length and width so that there is no mistaking what you’re seeing. Could I use a regular pair of scissors? Sure. Would it give me the consistent results? Nope. 😎 (I also use them on oak tag / card for slopers and it makes tracing them off super speedy with the uniform notches).
Thank you so much for this video! This is the solution I need to change a half circle skirt with only side and back seams to 7/8 panels princess seamed (front center, side fronts, back (2) with center back seam and zip, and back sides). I am making a dress with princess seamed bodice and half circle skirt. But I am sewing with shantung. The pattern instructions call for cutting on the cross grain for all pieces. Except that would turn the slubs in the fabric from horizontal to vertical and I don't think I want to do that. Also, the larger the section, the greater the uneven settling of the fabric that is on the bias. I found your website and RUclips channel while searching for instructions to cut a multi-panel half circle skirt. Your instruction to fold the individual panels in half lengthwise to find the center which is the grainline is priceless. Thank you again. Dee Dee
I am so chuffed that this video appeared for you when you needed it, and that it was so helpful to you! Have a lovely weekend!
This is amazing 😍😍 Congrats on getting it done and filmed. Thank you so much!
Thank you! It took forever because I made / recorded it in May, and the video clips were across multiple devices and storage back ups! 🤯
Hi, Eve, love the tool role! Your video is so clear. Can't wait to sew mine!
Thanks Anita! Let me know if you run into any struggles, always happy to help! 😘
Guido Hofenbitzer has translated his first pattern making book in English, if you really want to learn pattern making on a scientific level, I think he used the MÜLLER & SOHN system. He also refers to the Armstrong book as well. It's a hefty book, worth more than the price.
Anntonio Donnanno has a new book on Men's wear coming out just about now. Do you sew for others and for a living?
The old pattern making books from Natalie Bray are worth their weight in gold too. I have the first one Dress Pattern Design and More Dress Pattern Design.....please don't hold me to the exact name but they are both from Natalie Bray. I took it upon myself to read both books from cover to cover and the information just blew my brain. i shopped in Oxford St. at a book store that had every possible book......almost on fashion design...that's how I came upon Shoben's books so I took a train to Islington and found the school they ran. Mind you it was 2015 thereabouts. I purchased that same ruler there but I still had the books I had purchased in Oxford Street with me. So funny because I found the information of the school and address in the Shoben books. Winifred Aldrich is one of my faves too. I'm in Europe so I have access to most pattern making systems and did a year course I think it was 690 hours of Patternmaking. It was grueling but I did it for me, to free me up from commercial patterns. It completely took my fear of commercial patterns away. Just reading Harumi Maruyama books when I decided to come online to see if there are videos of her work.
Hi, do you have suggestions for doing a basic bodice pattern without darts? Thxs
Just what I needed, I’m putting in some squinty welt pockets on a coat rather than the patch pockets on the pattern. Did a practice using your tutorial and aced it. Thanks ❤
This is great news, thanks Aileen! 😘
Do you happen to know how big the opening is with this pattern? I'm trying to make a canvas advent calendar because all of the ones online through Amazon and Etsy have really small pockets. I was thinking I could make 24 accordion pockets like this and then sew them onto a larger panel of fabric that I'd hang with a dowel. Edit to add that it seems like the pattern link is broken.
Hi Shelby! I just saw an email from you, will send a reply through when back at my desk today!

I love it. Can you do a video on drafting a rolled collar? Maybe another on a hood? Thanks for these videos. Well done!
Morning! Absolutely! I am at the tail end of a big project but have lots of videos planned for pattern cutting videos asap! 😍
This is the first time i able to understand the reglan sleeve pattern, i've watch part 1 and it's very helpful and clear. Thank you so much ❤
I'm glad that it made sense to you! ❤️
I love this video and thank you for sharing this. I will buy the templates on Wednesday, as today is Monday. 10/14/24. I have a question, when making the panels, would it make a difference if the straight of grain is in the middle or to one side of the panel? Thank again for this wonderful tutorial!!!
Hi Dan! Within the templates and guide that comes with it I share more on cutting based upon grainline. Essentially, I base the gridline based upon the final length and the circumference I need to use. The larger the circumference for the waist, and the skirt length (floor length vs knee or mid calf) and the number of panels I want to use, the more likely I am to place the straight grain on the side of the panel. However this does leave the opposite edge of the panel off grain, and you'll want to pin seams together carefully, and allow the fabric to 'drop' before hemming (depending on the fabric you're using of course). Let me know if you need additional help!
Amazing...💙💙💙
Thanks a lot! 😊
Enjoyed your tutorial as another way to tackle a sleeve pattern. It is easy to remember too and wonderful to see how you can correct the curves slightly to achieve the ease you need. The method I learned was a quarter-fold one as well -- the difference being the cap was also folded in half (from top of cap to bicep line) to create an intersection line with the quarter-folds. Then you apply a few other measurements to make guidelines to draw in your curves (with a french curve). I think I can integrate your method with my existing one as yours also provides the pitch points that determine good placement for the notch markings. Thank you so much for sharing this!
Hi Dianne! I'm so happy that this method works for you! I would love to hear how it works out integrated with the previous method you were using! 😘
this tutorial was soooo easy to understand, thank u 🧚🏼♀️
You’re welcome, I'm glad it was helpful! 😊

The book 'Pattern making for fashion design' is a great book and resource. However, mine fell a part very quickly and the book is exspensive. It is a very bad quality made book. I would recommend buying the ring bound version as the book binding and paper quality is very poor quality especially for the price for the soft bound version.
Oh, that's awful about yours falling apart! Mine has in places separated from the cover, but I put it down to me being rough with it and using it so much over the years... a ring bound version sounds like a better idea,
Would love some more information regarding fit and concepts to keep in mind when considering fit etc.
Great ideas, thank you! I've added to my video ideas notebook!
Hello Eve, Thanks a lot for your free videos. I am interested in learning how to sew, where do I start please? Thanks.
Hi… can you please make video about transforming from basic bodice pattern to a shirt or blouse pattern?like the pink shirt you are wearing. I am still confused. If I wanted to draft a shirt from my basic bodice pattern, I added 4cm on the bust length, do I need to draw the shirt armhole line a bit lower than the basic bodice pattern armhole line ?
Hi.. so glad to come across your channel. I am learning drafting my own pattern from youtube. I got problems on the sleeve. I tried your method. I got 1.3cm ease for the back sleeve pattern but for the front sleeve, no ease, just exactly the same length as the front armhole length. I tried to adjust it but could not adjust. So I just cut and saw it. I turned out good. I am satisfied with the results. Thanks so much for sharing.
FYI, folks can also just send their shoes to a Cobbler to have it done.
@@mgichndz I think everyone is aware that they could go to a cobbler.. but where’s the fun and sense of achievement in that? 😆
Que buen trazo sobre diseño, muchas gracias 😊
You're welcome!
Where does one even start. I love Japanese cloths etc. would love to make something. Do you have any beginner tutorials. Male fan of Japanese wear
Thank you so much for an amazing tutorial! May I ask, if I would like to create a collar for a dress that I already own and don’t have a pattern for, will the measuring work the same if I measure the existing neck instead of from a pattern? And please could you link your video where you create a full collar without opening? Or is it just to reuse the same pattern, fold the fabric on the front neck side on the pattern, and then just sew together the back neck sides together? I am trying to design a kind of cowl/funnel neck and stumbles a little with it since the top of the collar closest to the chin cannot be less wide than the actual necklines width to fit my head in.
How can I get the book
They're all linked in my video description!
I am so excited to have found your channel
Thank you so much! I hope you find what you need but I am always open to suggestions of new videos! 😘

I'm so happy that I found your video and channel! I love the idea of changing collars and sleeves of dress and shirt patterns that I like! I literally was looking for a peter pan collared shirt pattern the other day and couldn't find one that I liked. Now I know how to modify the collar of the dress pattern that I already have! Thank you!!!!
Hi Angie! This is such a lovely comment to log in and read! I hope all your collar and sleeve mods come out beautifully! 😘 Let me know if there's a specific one you'd like, I have a good list for video ideas that I'll be getting back to in the next month or so!
This is super useful!! If there a reason why the curve pivoting uses that 3/4 in? (i.e. is that related to how you've drafted the neckline, so a different drafting method would need a different pivot? or is it just a pleasant curve)
This is a brilliant tutorial. Thanks so much. Will catch up on all your other videos now!
Ah, I'm so glad it was helpful to you Marianne! Let me know if there are other tutorials you'd like to see, I struggle to come up with ideas now the basics are covered! 😘
It’s near 10 pm I have been working on making a dress, using two pattern I have cut out the skirt pieces and gathered them but I need to make a bodice design for the top. I also have a band to attach to the bottom part and connect to the top. Do you have any suggestions
This is a fantastic video, thank you. At the end you said you thought you’d need a little extra room and you were going to cut across and down. Can you explain how you’re going to do this? Thanks again.
Hi. do you have written instructions for drafting a sleeve to fit any armhole? The sleeve sloper is for a specific bodice and I am adjusting a shop bought pattern. Thanks very much
May i ask what you would change if you wanted to do this for a floor length 1 length (no train at back) tulle attachment for a dress with a leg slit and gathering on say 3 layers and no gathering on say 5 layers (obviously 5 layers would be no different just maybe less panels but compensating for slit) I mean a full circle uses more fabric with wastage. Tulle can be cut any which way so panels side by side upright and upside down would work, but would the drape be affected if panels are cut (i hate no seam tulle skirts yuck, i would sew and cut fairly invisible seams to join.) would live your opinion on the whole slit planning. Maybe the 3 panels isnt so bad zipper in back slit either leg 🤷🏼♀️. Your thoughts?

This was great, thank you! The only part that is unclear to me is how you determined how much to bump out/scoop prior to drawing your curve. I see that you've chosen .5 and 1cm on the back, but where did these measurements come from? I just copied your numbers, of course :)
How lovely. How wonderful.
Thank you!
