Without yet hearing the price , Laya's guess is by far the closest . This place makes my house , which is worth about ! million , look like a shack in Appalachia . My grandpa's place in Alabama was about 7,000 acres with 40-50 families of share croppers living on it and farming parts of it . The house was a pre-civil war plantation house of 20 something rooms which sat at the end of a driveway about a 1/4 mile long , lined with 100 plus year old live oaks .Grandpa drove around in a 30 year old pickup truck with the bumper held on by bailing wire, with dents and dings everywhere and wore old overalls with patches on the knees and ass . He had put as much of it as he was allowed into the Soil Bank , which is a government project which paid farmers money NOT to grow certain crops in order to maintain the price of those crops at a level where farmers could make a living . He used to joke that he made more money by NOT growing cotton and NOT growing corn than he made on any other crops LOL .

Also been to and around those areas, I live in southern Idaho no. And yeah that is a beautiful and super cool area. So is yellow stone, we got west Yellowstone, here in Idaho. Yellow stone and Montana, Wyoming and Idaho should be on the list of places to go and see, if you are in our part of the world. You want cowboys and rodeos, we got them, you want the occasional big city experience we each got one apiece, haha, want some of the best national and state parks, we all got at least one of the top ten, in my opinion. Want country living/farming, friendly neighbors, we got that too. Want a decent job that provides a good living, depending on what you do/want to do. We got that too. This region is definitely not one to over look when visiting. And the high desert when spring hits and all the desert/mountain flowers bloom. A sight to see, also have huge regional humming birds and all the hiking/camping and out doors stuff you could ever want, the land to match. Oh, Bozeman is amazing in summer, with their music festival type deal on Main Street, food and vendors. Live music, the college, REI, outdoors store focused mainly on backpacking and high end, light gear. Their museum is great. Killer restaurants. Been a few times, need to go again as part of a larger vacation.

A shop means a maintenance shop for maintaining the equipment's/ranch vehicles and gear, etc. Your desire for 5 acres with pond and a decent sized home for less than $500K means pretty rural or less expensive states - think the SE, Deep South, midwest rural. In my state of Washington, even in the cheaper Eastern part, you'd struggle to find something like that at your price point.

The only places that you should avoid, are the big cities, where many are in decline.
