    God, I loved the scene where he goes to Vander's statue. So frustrated with himself despite Knowing he would never bring himself to sacrifice Jinx.

    I think what makes Silco such an incredible villain is that he is human. He is not a monster, even though he does monsterous things. He is a Terrorist and a Visionary, a father and a murderer, a rebel and a druglord.
    Arcane was so masterful in making you realize that while you disagree with Silcos methods and his way, his goals aren't something you can dismiss. Zaun deserves recognition, help at the very least, and yeah, maybe it _should_ be independent, since Piltover clearly failed the Undercity hard. You understand why Vander did not want to fight, but you also see why Silco and Sevika do. Everyones motivation makes so much _sense_ and that is what reality is: So foten, we do not have a good and a bad side. We have lots of different paths to an outcome and most of them have some good and some bad and in the end, we have to decide which evil we can tolerate more on the path we take.
    Can we stand back, knowing that while we may save the people in our direct vicity from imminent destruction, but allowing slow death and decay to take not only their lifes, but also their hope?
    Or do we fight, knowing that a lot of people will probably die, but maybe there is a brighter dawn for our future children.
    Do we sacrifice the people we fight for as fodder for the war, because we believe in "The greater good" that this will achieve?
    There is no good answer here, just a path we can choose

    As a Neurodivergent individual, who has sworn off lying because ew, I find Arcane so refreshing in it's authenticity. I'm sick of lies in Tv, and my life in general. Natural, organic, and genuine (anything) has been the only way, so far, for me to find piece in life

      Lies and betrayal are also easy drama. It's very "Gasp!" sort of drama. Sudden, but without a lot of consistent effect on the story. Much deeper when characters are actually able to communicate their feelings, but are unable to get along-- that creates much stronger drama when two characters are at odds even if they fully respect and understand each other.

    Great video, but I strongly disagree on one point. Viktor did actually lie in a crucial moment. "Was your friend able to help? - No. No, he said nature was resistant to this sort of tampering". Viktor actually quoted part of Singed's answer, so it wasn't a lie. However, him beginning his reply with "No" was.

    • @HedgehogEditor
      @HedgehogEditor 8 месяцев назад +19

      This is true. He does say "No" but not because he's trying to manipulate Jayce. Viktor DID plan to tell Jayce about what the Doctor told him, but after seeing Jayce's blockade and hearing the way Jayce talked about people from the Undercity, he realized he couldn't trust him. It is the only "untrue" moment I could find in the show, but even then, it's less about lying to be deceptive, rather than lying by omission.

      Technically speaking, Singed _wasn't_ able to help. Singed gave him half of a solution with the Hexcore being the other half, and it's clear from his hesitation that he isn't even fully convinced it's safe. Moreover, the amount of Shimmer Singed gives him is only enough to fix his leg, not the whole disease, so there are countless loopholes. Whatever the case, I understand your point.

    Silco may have been coded as a villian, but i never saw him as one. Not a hero, but not a villian either.
    The way his disposition slowly changes over the season is a really lovely tale. Not in hot he present or in how he treats his subordinates but in his internal life.
    Jinx causes alot of this, yes. But its also the realization that sometimes, the thing you cared about most, isnt actually worth what you were once willing to give for it.
    Silco learns a form of humility in this show. And i was very very saddened when he passed.
    Def need more Silco.

    Silco did lie to Jinx if you take in account that he told her that Vi was here only for the gems and not for her. Or when he tells Jayce he was responsible for the killings of the enforcers when in reality it was all Jinx’s doing. But I agree that most of the time he doesn’t lie to her or anybody.

      Silco genuinely believed Vi was dead and as far as he knew, she could have been there for the gems but what he did know for sure at that time was he needed Jinx both to treat his eye infection and take over his criminal empire one day and he couldn`t afford what was left of Powder to interfere with her loyalties.

    Oh gosh thank you so much! I could never put this into words before, you are so right about the show’s honesty. I feel like political conflict based on cynical dishonesty is analogous to romcom conflicts based on end-of-second-act misunderstandings, it’s so much easier to write but it doesn’t have the power of truly intractable problems that drive a lot of real conflict. This made my weekend and reminded me how much I love this show (more arcane pleeeaaase)

    • @HedgehogEditor
      @HedgehogEditor 8 месяцев назад +3

      Thank you for your comment and frankly I agree. Writing a story where characters are at odds simply because they CAN'T get along is fascinating to me. There are so few stories that are made that have conflict like this. It particularly makes character relationships like Vi/Caitlyn or Jayce/Viktor or Heimerdinger/Ekko interesting to me, because despite them being at odds, they still work together. They change when their goals change, allowing them to work better together.

  • @masonguthrie1257

    What is interesting in this show is that people don’t lie however they are constantly painting their own narratives. Like with Silco and Jinx about Vi coming back, he did not lie to her but he was quick to push the narrative that Vi was not here for Jinx. Even if we know that is untrue and Silco probably knows that’s untrue it’s still a possibility and thus not a lie. And this type of narrative manipulation is done by almost every character.

    • @HedgehogEditor
      @HedgehogEditor 8 месяцев назад +2

      Oh Vi fully intended to come back-- she abandons Powder emotionally in the moment. Vi just hit her sister-- she needed a moment to calm down. Powder's sitting there, screaming for Vi, and that's when Silco appears. That's what I meant by abandoned. Marcus grabbing Vi is tangential.

    A good first video! I appreciate how this little fact I never noticed about this show highlights a central truth about its storytelling: strong characters are their truth withoutco p4omise, and the strongest of them never lie b3cause their truth is so strong. Only 2 quibbles: 1. The convention of lying doesn't predate the written word Gilgamesh and Macbeth are written works; by definition they aren't older than the written word. The second bit: certain words in the script repeat themselves in short succession (e.g. character, tragedy), and using synonyms would make for a stronger listen. That said, Im glad to have listen to this and would lime to hear more of your takes on IdleScree.

Still I think the video makes a good point that Arcane uses lies and deceit as plot devices much much less than other shows.

    • @peteryang5056
      @peteryang5056 4 месяца назад +2

      Yeah, that’s the one case where I think Silco is unambiguously lying. His confrontation with Vi at the end of Episode 6 makes it clear that he knows the real reason she’s back - Jinx is all they talk about during their conversation, and it’s the prospect of losing Jinx to the one person that could threaten his bond with her that causes Silco to (for the first time in the series) explode with fear and rage when Vi and Caitlyn escape. That scene makes no sense, given Silco’s characterization in the rest of the show, if Silco actually believes Vi is there for the crystal rather than for Jinx.
      That said, I feel like Silco’s one lie here actually accentuates the point of this video, because it’s NOT a lie introduced by the writers to create artificial conflict. It’s a lie told from desperation, and it makes perfect sense given Silco’s character and the situation he finds himself in that he’d resort to untruth to try to keep Jinx on his side.
      And better yet, it’s exactly this lie that ultimately sows the seeds for Silco’s undoing. Because it doesn’t take much for Jinx to see through Silco’s words and realize that Vi *is* there for her, and it’s what motivates Jinx’s view of Silco from then on as being a liar, which directly leads her to misinterpret his words at Vander’s statue and to the multilayered tragedy of the final scene.

If silco didnt stand up the hor'rible treatment of the underground would have never stopped! Thats the fact as a gen z socialist i see this so hard in the series. Silco did do bad things but he did nothing wrong to get the underground to stand up against the council. He maybe a villain but he was a villain who was wanting the underground to become free from the grasp and he did care and love jinx even if he wasnt perfect father even didnt know how to show he cared but at the end of the first season we do see that he did love her. I think it's worth pointing out that Vi didn't abandon Powder of her own free will. Silco handed her over to the police after she walked out of Powder's sight & never told Powder/Jinx. He partly manufactured the abandonment of a child because he saw his own trauma in her. Do I think this was planned? No. And I don't think he himself believes he was lying because, to him, Vi walking away at all was an abandonment. But he absolutely chose to manipulate Jinx for years to protect his relationship with her

    • @Kaipyro67ALT
      @Kaipyro67ALT 8 месяцев назад +13

      No, actually-- you're remembering part of that moment wrong. MARCUS apprehends Vi of his own volition and tells Silco that Vi is dead. Marcus LIES to Silco, who in turn tells Jinx that her sister is gone, because as far as he knows, she is. Remember Silco is just as shocked as Jinx is when Sevika tells him that Vi's back. He even confronts Marcus about it at his own home. Marcus lied, Silco told the truth. He didn't manipulate Jinx intentionally.

    • @smileyhappyface5864
      @smileyhappyface5864 8 месяцев назад +4

      1: saying "Vi abandoned Powder" is important to discussion about Silco AND Jinx, because neither of them figure out it's not true until years later, Obviously, we know she was going to come back.
      2: Marcus takes Vi to save her from Silco, so sayng that he put Vi in jail when he clearly thought she was dead afterward. Silco legitimately thought Vi abandoned her.
      3: Silco's relationship with Jinx was never in danger, so saying he did something to "protect" it is weird. He never knew Vi was alive, and as such he never mentioned it. There wasn't even any manipulation. He didn't manufacture anything, he just misunderstood the situation just like Jinx did.

Whatever the case, you are definitely missing the point he was making about the subjective truth if you think he omits information _all_ the time.

    i feel like calling edgerunners and last of us "Equally good video game adaptations" is overselling them a bit

      Fair enough, that specifically is a matter of taste--I personally really liked both of them afkjdskg

      I would argue that Edgerunners was actually a better adaptation than Arcane. Arcane is brilliant, but it's adapting a moba with almost no story. Sure, there's lore, but the creators of the game change that lore all the time. Edgerunners adapts the world of Cyberpunk 2077 sooo well and actually includes a lot of the major themes of the game, important story characters, major villains, etc.
